An Adaptive Reclosing Algorithm to Discriminate between Permanent Fault and Transient Fault using THD of Voltage Waveform

This paper presents a new adaptive single-phase auto reclosure (SPAR) algorithm to discriminate between a permanent fault and a transient fault and to minimize a protection dead time. The algorithm precisely detects the extinction of the secondary arc, based on THD's profiles on the faulted phase voltage waveform. The EMTP/ATPDraw program was used to simulate the single phase grounding fault for evaluating the proposed algorithm. And the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is performing well.
A Study on the Parameter Determination of Synchronous Compensator in AC network with HVDC system

This paper presents the determination of synchronous compensator(S.C) rating and parameter in Cheju AC network. The role of S.C is to supply Inertia and reactive power to HVDC system which is a kind of a generator without the function of reactive power control and Inertia. Therefore, the parameters of S,C have to be determined by considering HVDC operating characteristics. The background of this paper is the determination of S.C parameters in Cheju AC network in the case of replacing current operating S,C to new S.C type.
Distance Relaying Algorithm Using a DFT-based Modified Phasor Estimation Method

In this paper, we propose a distance relaying algorithm using a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT)-based modified phasor estimation method to eliminate the adverse influence of exponentially decaying DC offsets. Most distance relays are based on estimating phasors of the voltage and current signals. A DFT is generally used to calculate the phasor of the fundamental frequency component in digital protective relays. However, the output of the DFT contains an error due to exponentially decaying DC offsets. For this reason, distance relays have a tendency to over-reach or under-reach in the presence of DC offset components in a fault current. Therefore, the decaying DC components should be taken into consideration when calculating the phasor of the fundamental frequency component of a relaying signal. The error due to DC offsets in a DFT is calculated and eliminated using the outputs of an even-sample-set DFT and an odd-sample-set DFT, so that the phasor of the fundamental component can be accurately estimated. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated for a-phase to ground faults on a 345 kV, 50 km, simple overhead transmission line. The Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) is used to generate fault signals. The evaluation results indicate that adopting the proposed algorithm in distance relays can effectively suppress the adverse influence of DC offsets.
Probabilistic Arrival Power Evaluation considering Voltage Stability

Purpose of the electric power system planning and operation is to supply the electric energy to customers continuously and economically. With the mutual exclusive laws of nature between reliability and economic, finding the meeting point is very important but not easy. Commonly the probabilistic reliability indices of the electric power systems are represented with negatively. And the effectiveness of FACTS on the probabilistic reliability could not be reflected with common methods. In this paper, a method to evaluate the probabilistic arrival power at each load point is presented. With this new proposed method, probabilistic reserve margin at load points can be calculated and which can be used with positive reliability index also. Using the P-V analysis, the voltage stability is considered in reliability evaluation. It is expected that the proposed method will be useful expecially in reliability evaluation of electric power system which has voltage restriction.
Development and Applicatin of EMTP Based Power Cable Simulator for Underground Transmission Cables

This paper discusses the characteristics of sheath circulating current as well as the development and application of new software for underground power cable systems. Generally, in steady state, high sheath circulating current causes the increase of sheath temperature and thermal resistance which leads to the steeply reduction of the power capacity. Therefore, the exact calculation of sheath circulating current is required for analysis about the influence of high sheath current on permissible current. In this paper, Power Cable Simulator is developed for calculation of the sheath current. It can analyse the sheath current by real time. It is also easier to use than conventional software, such as EMTP and CabSim, because all the data for calculating the cable parameters are stored in a database(DB) within Power Cable Simulator. In addition, the accuracy of Power Cable Simulator is also proved through the comparison among the current calculated by Power Cable Simulator, EMTP and Cabsim with measured current.
The Audible Noise Prediction of the Substation due to Transformer Audible Noise and the Field Application of the Low Noise Transformer

Recently, there has been a growing interest in the environmental conservation. Accordingly, problems related to the audible noise of transformers have became more frequent. Therefore, it is urgent to find a fundamental solution about the audible noises in the substations. This paper described a sort of fundamental solution to solve the noise problem. As a fundamental solution, we suggested the proper audible noise level of transformers through noise prediction in the substation construction phase. And we applied the low noise transformers which have the predicted noise level. As the result, we are able to satisfy the noise regulation through measuring 43.6dBA at the boundary of substation. It is confirmed that the average error rate of prediction was within 3 percent.
Optimization Design of a Dielectric Lowpass Filter based on Continuum Design Sensitivity Analysis in Frequency Domain

This paper presents a new methodology for designing a dielectric waveguide filter with the cutoff frequency of 2.4 GHz based on the continuum design sensitivity analysis. An analytical sensitivity formula is derived in frequency domain and then unified program architecture applicable to the optimal design of high-frequency devices is proposed. A three-dimensional dielectric resonator used in waveguide filters has been tested to illustrate the validity of the proposed method.
A Study on the Effectiveness of Ultra-FRFET for the HV-BLU System in LCD TVs

This paper introduces a newly improved Ultra-FRFET that has much better reverse recovery characteristic than that of the typical MOSFET and presents its effectiveness in the HV-BLU system of LCD TVs. The reverse recovery time,
of Ultra-FRFET is shorter than 40nsec and the peak value of reverse current,
is also much smaller compared to the typical MOSFET's, which are sufficient to prevent the MOSFET’s failures without additional FRDs and diodes in HV-BLU system with a half-bridge resonant inverter topology worked by PWM method. In order to verify the validity, the loss analysis and the implementation results in cases when both the conventional solution using typical MOSFETs with additional FRDs and a new solution using Ultra-FRFETs are applied to a HV-BLU of 40" LCD TV are presented. As a result, the effectiveness of Ultra-FRFET was verified and the results are presented in this paper.

Current Estimation Techniques for Reliability Analysis of Semiconductor Interconnects

As process technology for semiconductor goes beyond the ultra-deep submicrometer regime, interconnect reliability on a chip has become a serious design concern. As process parameters scale, interconnect widths are reduced rapidly while the current flowing through the interconnect does not decrease in a proportional manner. This trend increases current densities in metal interconnects which may lead to poor reliability for electromigration. Hence, it is critical to estimate the current amount passing through the interconnects earlier in semiconductor design stages. The purpose of this paper is to propose a fast yet accurate current estimation technique that can offer not only analysis time equivalent to those offered by the previous approximation methods but also a relatively precise estimation by using closed-form equations. The accuracy of the proposed technique was confirmed to be about 8 times better on average when compared to the previous work.

As a result of applying surface roughness factor this simulation decrease a relative error (|experiment value - simulation value| /simulation value).
Assessment of Insulation Condition in Gas Turbine Generator Stator Windings

The results of off-line and on-line diagnostic tests performed on the stator winding of an air-cooled gas turbine(G/T) generator are reported in this paper. Off-line diagnostic tests included measurements of the ac current, dissipation factor(tan

A Frequency Adjustable Double Lorentz CRLH Transmission Line using DGS

In this paper, a double lorentz composite right left handed(DL-CRLH) transmission line is designed using defected ground structure (DGS) and varactor diodes. Previously, the diode has been adopted only selectively for one of parallel or series resonators, and the balanced frequency as well as triple band frequencies were fixed. However in the proposed DL-CRLH transmission line, the balanced frequency, where the resonant frequencies of the series-connected parallel resonator and shunt-connected series resonator are the same, is adjustable. In addition, the triple band frequencies are controlled, too. The measured balanced frequency varies between 3.42~4.8GHz according to the controlled bias voltage. In this paper, we proposed that stereo camera system using fuzzy control for moving object tracking. We extract some features of the moving object from overall image. This informations send to the PC and the PC calculate the coordinate of the object in the image frame. To make the object set in the middle of the image, the step motor should be controlled accurately and rapidly with the location information received by the PC. Then we design a fuzzy logic system for controlling stereo camera system. To verify the better performance of the proposed algorithm, we exemplified by experimental results.
LMI-based Design of Integral Sliding Mode Controllers for Mismatched Uncertain Systems

This paper presents an LMI-based method to design an integral sliding mode controller for for a class of uncertain systems with mismatched unstructured uncertainties. The uncertain system under consideration may have mismatched parameter uncertainties in the state matrix as well as in the input matrix. Using LMIs we derive an existence condition of a sliding surface. And we give a switching feedback control law. Finally, we give a numerical design example in order to show that the proposed method can be better than the existing results.

The Development of Digital Excitation Control System for Diesel Generator of Nuclear Power Plant and Its Application

The excitation control system of an emergency diesel generator is classified as a kind of safety-related system. Compared with other control systems in a power plant, this system is required to be more reliable and have better performance. In this paper, the digital multi-redundant excitation system for a diesel generator was proposed. The signal processing system of the proposed system makes high speed signal processing and arithmetic in excitation control possible. The improved soft start algorithm and multiple PI parameters adaptation considering the diesel generator characteristics were implemented in the proposed system. The developed system was applied to a nuclear power plant successfully.

The safety critical systems in nuclear power plants should be designed to have a high level of fault tolerant capability because those systems are used for protection or mitigation of the postulated accidents of nuclear reactor. Due to increasing of the system complexity of the digital based system in nuclear fields, the reliability of the digital based systems without an auto-test or a self-diagnostic feature is generally lower than those of analog system. To overcome this problem, additional redundant architectures in each redundant channel and self-diagnostic features are commonly integrated into the digital safety systems. The self diagnostic function is a key factor for increasing fault tolerant capabilities in the digital based safety system. This paper presents an availability and safety evaluation model to analyze the effect to the system's fault tolerant capabilities depending on self-diagnostic features when the loss or erroneous behaviors of self-diagnostic function are expected to occur. The analysis result of the proposed model on the several modules of a safety platform shows that the improvement effect on unavailability of each module has generally become smaller than the result of usage of conventional models and the unavailability itself has changed significantly depending on the characteristics of failures or errors of self-diagnostic function.

control in the form of linear matrix inequalities(LMI) having three non-convex design parameters. The result is dependent on the characteristics of time-delay, predetermined degree of saturation level, and bound of disturbance. Finally, we give a comparative example to show the effectiveness and usefulness of our result.
Robust Matching Algorithm for Optical Images

This paper proposes the robust matching algorithm of the optical images. To do this, we propose two algorithms, that is, matching algorithms when the silhouette of images is detected and when it is not detected. Also, we propose the method for detecting the matching template and non-matching template from each optical image. And then, optical images are matched according to the coefficient of correlation represented by the similar degree between optical images. Finally, we show the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method through some experiments.
Classification and Tracking of Hand Region Using Deformable Template and Condensation

In this paper, we propose the classification and tracking method of the hand region using deformable template and condensation. To do this, first, we extract the hand region by using the fuzzy color filter and HCbCr color model. Second, we extract the edge of hand by applying the Canny edge algorithm. Third, we find the first template by calculating the conditional probability between the extracted edge and the model edge. If the accurate template of the first object is decided, the condensation algorithm tries to track it. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method through some experiments.
A Study on Comparison of Input-Shaping Filter for Optimum Design between Artificial Immune Algorithm and Genetic Algorithm

Recently to increase the productivity and improve the quality in the industrial process, suppressing the residual vibration in motion control systems becomes the essential problem to solve. One of the methods to suppress the residual vibration is the input shaping technique. It is based on parameters of the system model; however, the parameters are usually difficult to obtain. This paper shows the effects of the residual vibration caused by the variation of the general velocity profile for the system with two vibration modes, and also shows the effects of the input shaping filter based on the parameters of system model. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed input shaping filter using an artificial immune algorithm is more effective for suppressing residual vibrations than genetic algorithm.
Feed forward Differential Architecture of Analog Parallel Processing Circuits for Analog PRML Decoder

A feed forward differential architecture of analog PRML decoder is investigated to implement on analog parallel processing circuits. The conventional PRML decoder performs the trellis processing with the implementation of single stage in digital and its repeated use. The analog parallel processing-based PRML comes from the idea that the decoding of PRML is done mainly with the information of the first several number of stages. Shortening the trellis processing stages but implementing it with analog parallel circuits, several benefits including higher speed, no memory requirement and no A/D converter requirement are obtained. Most of the conventional analog parallel processing-based PRML decoders are differential architecture with the feedback of the previous decoded data. The architecture used in this paper is without feedback, where error metric accumulation is allowed to start from all the states of the decoding stage, which enables to be decoded without feedback. The circuit of the proposed architecture is simpler than that of the conventional analog parallel processing structure with the similar decoding performance. Characteristics of the feed forward differential architecture are investigated through various simulation studies.
Influence of Aging on Surface EMG Signals Generated Under Sustained Fixed Load Contraction

The present study was performed to investigate the effect of aging on muscular activity of older subjects under the condition of fixed load muscle contraction. SEMG signals were recorded from old (46 women) and young (45 women) groups performing sustained isometric elbow flexion contraction with a fixed load during 30 seconds. Linear regression and mean square error (MSE) analysis with four characteristic variables (ARV, RMS, MDF, MNF) were used to compare the age-related difference (of local muscle fatigue and fluctuation of the amplitude and frequency) in the SEMG signal. The main results can be summarized as follows: During sustained muscle contraction with a fixed load: i) the MSE values of amplitude (ARV, RMS) and frequency (MDF, MNF) variables were more than 30% higher for the young than for the old adults; ii) the measures of local muscle fatigue (slope of the MDF and MNF) indicated greater fatigue in the old; and iii) the rate of increase of the SEMG amplitude was higher for the young than the old.
