Evaluation of the Charging effects of Plug-in Electrical Vehicles on Power Systems, taking Into account Optimal Charging Scenarios

Electric Vehicles(EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles(PHEVs) which have the grid connection capability, represent an important power system issue of charging demands. Analyzing impacts EVs charging demands of the power system such as increased peak demands, developed by means of modeling a stochastic distribution of charging and a demand dispatch calculation. Optimization processes proposed to determine optimal demand distribution portions so that charging costs and demand can possibly be managed. In order to solve the problems due to increasing charging demand at the peak time, alternative electricity rate such as Time-of-Use(TOU) rate has been in effect since last year. The TOU rate would in practice change the tendencies of charging time at the peak time. Nevertheless, since it focus only minimizing costs of charging from owners of the EVs, loads would be concentrated at times which have a lowest charging rate and would form a new peak load. The purpose of this paper is that to suggest a scenario of load leveling for a power system operator side. In case study results, the vehicles as regular load with time constraints, battery charging patterns and changed daily demand in the charging areas are investigated and optimization results are analyzed regarding cost and operation aspects by determining optimal demand distribution portions.
A Study on Power System Characteristics and Economic Benefit by Operating the New SIHWA Tidal Power Plant

This paper presents the various analysis of the power system for operating the new SIHWA tidal power plant. In the analysis of the power system, summer load condition of 2011 is used. Especially, power flow, fault current, voltage and contingency of SIHWA tidal power plant area are analyzed by using PSS/E and there is no problem for the dynamic stability simulation. The new SIHWA tidal power plant is located in near metropolitan area where about 43% amount of the system load is consumed. Therefore, transmission losses are reduced. In addition, system marginal price can be lowered by generating the new SIHWA tidal power plant. The generation pattern of the SIHWA tidal plant is analyzed and the changes of generation are presented for various water levels by control of the rotor angle alpha and beta in water wheel generator.
The Development of an Operating System for Load-following Real-time Transformer Loss Minimization and Economic Analyses on its' Test Operation

In this paper, for minimizing the real-time operating load losses of the power transformer, a SCADA optimum operating system was developed, and the economic analyses on the test operation were performed. Transformer loss DB which reflects the economic integration operation criteria was constructed by referring the transformer manufacturer's loss data(iron loss, copper loss). Based on the loss DB, each substation transformer real-time loss was calculated according to the size of the transformer loads, and if integration or separation transformer operating conditions minimizing the loss are met, then a window pops-up and the dispatcher performs the substation equipments operation according to the procedure provided by this system. With the existing SCADA main program, the relation database of the substation facilities and integration/separation operation algorithm were developed and applied to Auto MTR Processor and pconn Processor Task module. Seven stations test data for seven months were analyzed for the economic analyses, and the results showed that Cost-Benefit ratio was 2.64, and IRR(Internal Rate of Return), 36%, which asserted the economic justification of the proposed system.

This paper presents the economic impact of consumer participation in Real-Time Pricing (RTP). A computer model was developed to analyze the impact of real-time pricing on the average price, electricity sales, and the social welfare. Four revenue reconciliation alternative were introduced to illustrate the effect of RTP. Finally a case study was done to analyze the consequent impact of the dynamic load profile on the long-term fuel mix, and the results were compared with those of
national power development plan.

As wind power has increased steadily, the importance of a condition monitoring system is being emphasized to maximize the availability and reliability of a wind turbine. To develop the advanced algorithms for fault detection and lifespan estimation, a wind turbine simulator is essential for verification of the proposed algorithms before applying them to a condition diagnosis & integrity prognosis system. The developed new-type simulator in this paper includes blades and various sensors as well as a motor, a gearbox and a generator of which the existing simulators generally consist. It also has similarity with a 3MW class wind turbine and can be used to acquire operational data from various operation conditions. This paper presents a design method of control logic for the wind turbine simulator, which gives a wind generation method and similar dynamic characteristics with the 3MW wind turbine. Finally, the proposed control logic is verified through experiments.

Dielectric Breakdown Voltage According to Flow Velocity and Temperature of Vegetable Oils

The streaming electrification process of vegetable insulating oils occurring when the oils contacted with solid material in a high power transformer circulation system seems to cause electrical discharge incidents and may cause failures. We therefore measured the dielectric breakdown voltage tendency of vegetable insulating oils flowing on the surface of the charging device with various velocity and temperature. First, the relation between the velocity and breakdown voltage tendency of vegetable oils, can be explained by volume effect and v-t effect. Second, experimental results show that applied voltage have little effect on dielectric breakdown voltage, when vegetable insulating oils used for large power transformer.
A Study on Electric Properties and Accelerated Water Tree Degradation of Environmental-friendly Non-crosslinked Polyethylene

The crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) is the most widely used insulating material for power cable. Due to its thermosetting characteristics, the XLPE can not be recycled, while the needs for the environmental friendly and recyclable insulator is rapidly increasing. In this paper, some important and basic electrical properties of non-crosslinked polyethylene such as conduction current characteristics, water the tree characteristics, AC breakdown test were experimentally investigated. It was shown that some of the tested samples had better performances from the application point of view for replacing current XLPE.
Reduction Method of Radio Interference in HVDC Converter System

In HVDC System, the rapid voltage breakdown between anodes and cathodes during valve firing causes radio interference in HVDC converter station. These voltage breakdown causes steep current pulse and inject current in system. As a result, harmonic frequencies are generated from valve, switchyard. In this paper, theoretical background of radio interference in HVDC converter is discussed and its reduction method for radio interference is proposed.

This paper proposes the effective monitoring method for marine engine system, which is implemented based upon Controller Area Network (CAN). As the marine engine monitoring system requires various kind of information, a lot of sensor nodes are distributed to several places. The CAN supports huge numbers of message IDs for the sensor nodes and provides a stable communication channel in a wide area such as a 12,000 TEU container ship. Since the CAN is priority-based communication system, some of hard real-time messages like alarm messages which are time-critical to the operation of the vessel cannot be communicated within the dead-time. Therefore it is desirable to distinguish the bandwidth of the CAN for static state messages and transition-state messages not to be harmful to the engine operations. Using the features of message arbitration ability of the CAN, it is proposed in this paper that the bandwidth allocation is dynamically adjusted to cope with the increment of input signal to improve the performance of monitoring system. Effectiveness and validity of the proposed scheme have been demonstrated through real experiments.
Marine Engine Wear Diagnosis and Assessment Using the Wavelet Transform

Currently power of the diesel engine is increasing continuously, where the wearing problems become more severe. The wearing happens irregularly inside the cylinder, which causes a high burden to the marine engine. In this paper, a novel scheme to measure the wearing and to represent the engine states has been proposed. To monitoring the states of the marine engine efficiently, a laser displacement sensor has been utilized to measure the wearing happening inside the marine engine. To eliminate the noise signals in the distance measurement, the wavelet transform has been adopted, which is robust against the noises caused by vibrations. An engine simulator is designed to develop the system for measuring the engine wears, where the superiority of the wavelet transform against the conventional filtering schemes has been demonstrated.
Design and Implementation of Seismic Data Acquisition System using MEMS Accelerometer

In this paper, we design a seismic data acquisition system(SDAS) and implement it. This system is essential for development of a noble local earthquake disaster preventing system in population center. In the system, we choose a proper MEMS-type triaxial accelerometer as a sensor, and FPGA and ARM processor are used for implementing the system. In the SDAS, each module is realized by Verilog HDL and C Language. We carry out the ModelSim simulation to verify the performances of important modules. The simulation results show that the FPGA-based data acquisition module can guarantee an accurate time-synchronization for the measured data from each axis sensor. Moreover, the FPGA-ARM based embedded technology in system hardware design can reduce the system cost by the integration of data logger, communication sever, and facility control system. To evaluate the data acquisition performance of the SDAS, we perform experiments for real seismic signals with the exciter. Performances comparison between the acquired data of the SDAS and the reference sensor shows that the data acquisition performance of the SDAS is valid.
Implementation of High-Reliable MVB Network for Safety System of Nuclear Power Plant

The computer network plays an important role in modern digital controllers within a safety system of a nuclear power plant. For the reliable and realtime data communication between controllers, this paper proposes a modified high-reliable MVB(multi-function vehicle bus) as a main control network for a safety system of a nuclear power plant. The proposed network supports the state-based communication in order to ensure the deterministic communication latency, and very fast network recovery when the bus master fails compare to the standard MVB. This paper also shows the implementation results using a FPGA-based testbed.
Estimation of Heart Rate Variability with an Android Smart Phone Platform

In this study, ambulatory electrocardiogram(ECG) signal and the rhythms of heart beats are visualized in terms of R-R intervals and Heart Rate Variability(HRV) in the environment of an android plaform. With this aim, Graphical User Interface(GUI) is implemented by executing multi-thread Java programming modules including ECG, heart-beats, tachogram and visualization unit. ECG signals are acquired in an android device by receiving the data from ambulatory ECG sensory system. Finite Impulse Response(FIR) filters are implemented to eliminate the baseline wandering noises contained in the ambulatory signals and DC-offset level in R-R interval data. With simulating the normal or stress emotional state of a subject, we can find the fact that HRV can be successfully estimated and visualized in an android smart phone platform.
Image Enhancement with Rotating Kernel Transformation Filter Generated by Bresenham's Algorithm

It is quite important to improve the visual acuity of a medical image by suppressing noisy parts and simultaneously keeping the details of signal components to draw the accurate diagnostics. With this aim, we suggest a novel method to generate Rotational Kernel Transformation (RKT) filter mask with applying Bresenham's algorithm and implement an nonlinear filtering algorithm to eliminate noises. As a result, we can find the fact that RKT filter mask can be automatically created and the visual acuity of a corrupted image can be elevated in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with applying the RKT filter.
Development of Laser Induced Real Time Photoacoustic Tomography Imaging System and Phantom Evaluation

Photoacoustic Tomography (PAT) is a promising medical imaging modality by reason of its particularity. It combines optical imaging contrast of optical imaging with the spatial resolution of ultrasound imaging and can demonstrate change of biological feature in an image. For that reason, many studies are in progress to apply this technic for diagnosis. But, real-time PAT system is necessary to confirm a biological reaction induced by external stimulation immediately. Thus, we developed a real-time PAT system using linear array transducer and self-developed Data acquisition board (DAQ) resources, To evaluate the feasibility and performance of our proposed system, two type of phantom test were also performed. As a result of those experiments, the proposed system shows enough performance and confirm its usefulness.
Design of Noninvasive Arterial Blood Pressure Measurement System by Using Double-Cuffs Oscillometric Method

In this study, a new blood pressure measuring system was proposed and implemented. An additional small-cuff was placed on the center of a inner cuff to measure morphological signals and new oscillometric ratio. The proposed BP-measuring system is composed of an external cuff, an inner cuff and a small-cuff. Oscillation signal from small-cuff is interpolated with 7th-order fitting polynomials and SBP, DBP ratio were 22.2% and 87.7%. Experimental data were gathered from 20 volunteers (

A Study Concerning Analysis of Arousal State of locomotive Engineering During Operating Train

The study for the passenger's comfortableness of vehicles and the arousal of car drivers has been done widely. On the other hand, there are few studies for the locomotive engineers. Human error means that the mistakes made by human, recently it receives attention in the field of safety engineering and human engineering. Comparing the operating condition of train with car, because of the simplification of the visual stimulus, the arousal level on the train goes down easily. The arousal level down makes judgement down, the accident risk from human error is getting bigger. In this study, we measured bio-signals(ECG, EDA, PPG, respiration and EEG) from 6 locomotive engineers to evaluate their arousal state while they operated the train. Also we recorded the 3 axes acceleration signal showing the vibration state of train. Also, the existence of tunnels were simultaneously measured. At the station section where the train speed goes down, the size of vector's sum decreases because of reduced vibration. Beta component in EEG tends to increase at the entering point of each station and tunnel. It is due to the arousal reaction and tension growth. The mean SCR(skin conductance response) was more increased in neutral section. As the button control movement (body movement) increases in the neutral section, it is appeared that SCR increase. RR interval tends to gradually increase during train operation for 1 hour 40 minutes. However, It tends to sharply decrease at the stop station because strong concentration needed to stop train on the exact point. The engineer's arousal reaction can be checked through analysing the bio-signal change during train operation. Therefore, if this analysing result is adopted to the sleepiness prevention caution system, it will be useful for the safety train operation.
Development of a Simulator and Algorithm Test for Selective-breaking Integrated Protective Relay for Ungrounded DC Traction Power Supply System

In recent years, a lot of research was done for earth fault protection in ungrounded dc power supply system. As a result, selective-breaking integrated protective relaying system is developed in progress and is currently field-testing are planned. Algorithm on a PC using PSCAD done a lot of testing before performing field tests, but in this study developed algorithms and functions needed to determine whether they were operating normally. Therefore, simulated system is similar to the actual situation was required and made. selective-breaking algorithm verification and validation was performed with simulator.
The Study About Low Voltage Circuit Breaker Mix Method Between IEC Circuit Breaker and Domestic Circuit Breaker

Recent WTO/TBT agreement was adopted by the IEC domestic. For this reason, low voltage electrical equipment was many Confusion arises. Low voltage circuit was also one of these. The case of low voltage circuit, existing domestic circuit breakers and circuit breakers IEC curve differs from the behavior of each other. If low voltage circuit breaker wrong facility, circuit breaker malfunction may occur due to the large property damage. In this paper, to solve these problems domestic circuit breakers and circuit breaker operation IEC curves were analyzed. And, through experiments suggested compatible breaker way.
Transferred OverVoltages on LV sides in Multigrounded Neutral during Line to Ground Fault on Distribution Systems

In this paper we propose multi-grounded neutral design method which was considered of transferred transient overvoltage when line to neutral fault occurs. Specially, In order to confirm the actual transient overvoltage magnitude which occurs on neutral line, we considered some screening(shielding) effects. The screening coefficient was deducted from field test results and calculation in a distribution line which is identical with an actual power line. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to suggest the guidance for grounding skystem design considering limitation of overvoltage for LV side in IEC 61936. The result is based on EMTP simulation and real field faults situation in distribution lines.
Structural and Physical Properties of Sealant Paste Prepared by Silica/Polymer Composites

Sealant paste with silica immersed in cross-linked epoxy-acrylate polymer resin was prepared by thermal and UV curing process. The curing mechanism of polymer resin resulted from 2 functional groups of epoxy and acrylic structure. The properties of microstructure, thermal conductivity and mechanical strength were investigated for its various applications. The adhesion strength is increased by increasing the thermal curing time until 15 minutes, and curing efficiency is saturated over 20 minutes. The increase rate per day of pot life and viscosity is 4.8%, indicating it has excellent storage stability. It is found that the formulation of silica pastes can be applied to heavy industries, building materials, display and various industries.
