Analysis of Lightning-Induced Overvoltage and Current in Buried Underground Distribution Cable using EMTP/MODELS

This paper analyzes the lightning-induced overvoltage and current in buried underground distribution cable. Based on analytical expressions, the lightning-induced overvoltage and current in buried underground distribution cable is calculated by EMTP/MODELS. The modeling is verified by comparing with the results in reference. Also, the type and buried arrangement of cables used in domestic distribution line are modeled by EMTP/ATPDraw. The various simulations according to the type and buried arrangement of cable are performed and the simulation results are analyzed.
Development of Section Load Estimation Program for Smart Distribution Management System

In this paper, we present the section load estimation program of distribution system for smart distribution management system. The proposed program is composed with three parts. One is the consistency check part for switch measurements which consist a section. The consistency check is divided into the current and angle test. For the current test, we examine the input and output power flow for the switch group. For the angle test, the result of power flow calculation at previous step is used. Another is the voltage estimation part for the measured switches. We use the weighted least square (WLS) method for the voltage estimation. The third is the part of final section load calculation. The database structure for accomplishing the developed estimation program is also proposed. To verify the accuracy of the experimental results, case studies are performed using a actual data of Jeju island. The developed program can be effectively applied to the distribution operation systems.
Analysis of Frequency Response Characteristic Considering Semiconducting Screen in Underground Distribution Cables

This paper describes frequency response and propagation characteristics considering semiconducting screen in distribution cables. In CIGRE WG 21-05, Simplified Approach(SA) and Rigorous Approach(RA) which can revise the permittivity considering semiconducting screen propose for more detailed EMTP model and frequency dependant analysis. In this paper, the frequency dependent characteristics of complex permittivity are variously analysed by cole-cole function of RA. The attenuation, propagation velocity and surge impedance according to frequency range(1 kHz to 500 MHz) and cable length are also analysed by SA and EMTP simulation in distribution cables. The propagation velocity considering semiconducting screen is slower, and it is saturated over the range of 1 MHz. The signal is significantly attenuated as frequency range is high.
Frequency Control Method of Grid Interconnected Microgrid Operating in Stand Alone Mode

Microgrid is a new electrical energy system that composed of various generators, renewable energy, batteries and loads located near the electrical customers. When Microgrid is interconnected with large power system, Microgrid don`t need to control the frequency. But in case of the outage or faults of power system, Microgrid should control the frequency to prevent the shutdown of Microgrid. This paper presents the frequency control methods using the droop function, being used by synchronous generators and EMS(Energy Management System). Using droop function, two battery systems could share the load based on locally measured signals without any communications between batteries. Also, we suggest that EMS should control the controllable distributed generators as P/Q control modes except batteries to overcome the weakness of droop function. Finally we suggest the two batteries systems to prolong the battery`s life time considering the economical view. The validation of proposed methods is tested using PSCAD/EMTDC simulations and field test sites at the same time.

In this paper, we propose protective coordination and automatic setting method using agents for distribution system with loop. The proposed protection scheme adopts an agent technology assuming communication among protection agents and auto-switch agents. Having exchanged fault-related information with each other, protection agents and auto-switch agents perform the primary and backup protection and fault section isolation, respectively. this proposed scheme using agents for distribution system with loop is implemented by matlab. Because of the various configuration of distribution system, It`s difficult to find cooperative agents for each agent. This paper develops a program to automatically set the cooperative route for the agents.

This paper analyzes eddy-current loss induced in magnets of surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) machines by using an analytical method such as a space harmonic method. First, on the basis of a two-dimensional (2D) polar coordinate system and a magnetic vector potential, the analytical solutions for the flux density produced by armature winding current are obtained. By using derived field solutions, the analytical solutions for eddy current density distribution are also obtained. Finally, analytical solutions for eddy current loss induced in rotor magnets are derived by using equivalent electrical resistance calculated from magnet volume and analytical solutions for eddy-current density distribution. In particular, the influence of time harmonics in armature current on the eddy current loss is fully investigated and discussed. All analytical results are validated extensively by finite element analysis (FEA).

This paper presents the fast steady state analysis using time-stepping finite element method for a high power three-phase transformer. The high power transformer spends huge computational cost of the time-stepping finite element method. It is because that the high power transformer requires a lot of time to reach steady state by its large inductance component. In order to reduce computational cost, in this paper, the adaptive time-step control algorithm combined with the embedded 2nd 4th singly diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta method and the analysis strategy using variation of the winding resistance are studied, and their numerical results are compared with those from the typical time-stepping finite element method.
Development of Constant Current Driving Module for High Power LED Lighting Using LLC DC-DC Transformer

This paper proposes a LED lighting system using integrated power system composed of bridgeless PFC, LLC DC-DC transformer, and dimmable constant current LED driver module. The proposed LED lighting system features high efficiency, high power factor, and dimming capability. In order to verify the validity of the proposed system, the 2kW prototype system was built and tested. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that the maximun efficiency of 92.6% and maximum power factor of 99.7% can be achieved.

This paper proposes the power management technology for stand-alone PV system to extend installation environment and coverage. The proposed power management technology in this paper can protect battery safeness from overcharge/discharge with keeping the proper SOC(State of Charge) and extend using time of system through estimation of operating power. The proposed power management technology in this paper is applied to Infra-free Variable Message Sign. And performance of power management technology in this paper was verified using simulation scenario.
Research of Accelerated Aging According to Long-term Stability of Vegetable Oil

The vegetable-based insulating oils are substitutes for mineral oils in oil-filled transformer. The important properties of vegetable insulating oil is their higher flash/fire point and biodegradability than conventional mineral oils. The large oil-filled transformer eliminate the risk of explosion and fire should the transformer fail and oil ignite owing to high flash/fire point of vegetable insulating oil. In addition, higher biodegradability of vegetable insulating oils can let the oil spill damage reduced. In this experiment, the real oil-filled transformers using mineral oil and vegetable oil have accelerated aging. After working on the 100% accelerated aging experiment were conducted comparing the transformer. The hottest-spot temperature using thermal coefficients were calculated to determin the degree of accelerated aging. As a result, apply mineral oil transformer in accordance with the accelerated aging life come to an end. In contrast, vegetable insulating oils showed the opposite characteristics. Vegetable insulating oil compared to the mineral oil are found to be an long life. As a result, the vegetable oil has a long-term stability.

In this paper, a new method is suggested to reduce the size of a wide-band array antenna. The power-divider for the feeding structure is made compact as
with the help of a novel Metamaterial UWB bandpass filter. This power divider is clearly different from others in that the proposed design uses microstrip structured Composite Right and Left-Handed (CRLH) filters, while others use two dielectric layers or long tapered transmission lines. In order to validate the proposed design method, the circuit and full-wave simulated results of the power divider with the Metamaterial UWB filters are compared to each other, and the Metamaterial properties of the structure are shown with the electric field at the ZOR and dispersion diagram. Furthermore, the antenna performance of the fabricated antenna with the power divider is measured and compared with the prediction. Also, the size reduction effect by the proposed scheme is addressed.
Design of Gas Identification System with Hierarchical Rule base using Genetic Algorithms and Rough Sets

Recently, machine olfactory systems as an artificial substitute of the human olfactory system are being studied actively because they can scent dangerous gases and identify the type of gases in contamination areas instead of the human. In this paper, we present an effective design method for the gas identification system. Even though dimensionality reduction is the very important part, in pattern analysis, We handled effectively the dimensionality reduction by grouping the sensors of which the measured patterns are similar each other, where genetic algorithms were used for combination optimization. To identify the gas type, we constructed the hierarchical rule base with two frames by using rough set theory. The first frame is to accept measurement characteristics of each sensor and the other one is to reflect the identification patterns of each group. Thus, the proposed methods was able to accomplish effectively dimensionality reduction as well as accurate gas identification. In simulation, we demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed methods by identifying five types of gases.
Monitoring Performance of Camera under the High Dose-rate Gamma Ray Environment

In this paper, the gamma ray irradiation test results of the CCD cameras are described. From the low dose-rate (2.11 Gy/h) to the high dose-rate (150 Gy/h) level, which is the same level when the hydrogen explosion was occurred in the 1~3 reactor unit of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the monitoring performance of the cameras owing to the speckles are evaluated. The numbers of speckles, generated by gamma ray irradiation, in the image of cameras are calculated by image processing technique. And the legibility of the sensor indicator (dosimeter) owing to the numbers of the speckles is presented.
Earthquake Event Auto Detection Algorithm using Accumulated Time-Frequency Changes and Variable Threshold

This paper presents a new approach for the detection of seismic events using accumulated changes on time-frequency domain and variable threshold. To detect seismic P-wave arrivals with rapidness and accuracy, it is that the changes on the time and the frequency domains are simultaneously used. Their changes are parameters appropriated to reflect characteristics of earthquakes over moderate magnitude(
magnitude 4.0) and microearthquakes. In addition, adaptively controlled threshold values can prevent false P-wave detections due to low SNR. We tested our method on real earthquakes those have various magnitudes. The proposed algorithm gives a good detection performance and it is also comparable to STA/LTA algorithm in computational complexity. Computer simulation results shows that the proposed algorithm is superior to the conventional popular algorithm (STA/LTA) in the seismic P-wave detection.
A Design for a Zigbee Security System in the Customer Side Environment of Jeju Smart Grid Field Test

In Jeju Smart Grid field test, Zigbee technology is being used as one of customer side solutions for AMI. Although Zigbee networks that provides effective connectivity and control among devices are advantages in ease of implementation and use, the data can be exposed to cyber attacks such as eavesdrop, unauthorized data dissemination and forgery. Currently authentication and confidentiality services are provided with the network and link keys generated based on public key pairs that are pre-installed in offline. However, the network is vulnerable once a hacker intrudes into a local network because operation and management policies for the generated keys are not well-established yet. In this paper, the vulnerability of the Zigbee security system in the customer side environment of Jeju Smart Grid field test is analyzed. Then, two-way authentication with the unique identifiers of devices and user-specific group management policies are proposed to resolve the vulnerability.
Instantaneous Amplitude and Frequency Estimator Using the Symmetric Higher Order Differential Energy Operator

An instantaneous amplitude (IA) estimator using the symmetric higher order differential energy operator is proposed. The amplitude estimator and the instantaneous frequency (IF) estimator based on the symmetric higher order differential energy operator coincide with the analyzed signal in time, and they show better estimation results than the IA and IF based on the higher order differential energy operator. Various IF and IA estimators are applied to AM-FM signals for the performance comparison. Among the IF and IA estimators, the IF and IA estimators based on the symmetric higher order energy operator show the best estimation accuracy. Then, the IA and IF estimators are applied to the distorted power line signal to show their usefulness as power disturbance detectors.
A Coding Mode Image Characteristics-based Fast Direct Mode Decision Algorithm

H.264 adopted many compression tools to increase image data compression efficiency such as B frame bi-directional predictions, the direct mode coding and so on. Despite its high compression efficiency, H.264 can suffer from its long coding time due to the complicated tools of H.264. To realize a high performance H.264, several fast algorithms were proposed. One of them is adaptive fast direct mode decision algorithm using mode and Lagrangian cost prediction for B frame in H.264/AVC (MLP) algorithm which can determine the direct coding mode for macroblocks without a complex mode decision process. However, in this algorithm, macroblocks not satisfying the conditions of the MLP algorithm are required to process the complex mode decision calculation, yet suffering a long coding time. To overcome the problem, this paper proposes a fast direct mode prediction algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can determine the direct mode coding without a complex mode decision process for 42% more macroblocks and, this algorithm can reduce coding time by up to 23%, compared with Jin`s algorithm. This enables to encode B frames fast with a less quality degradation.
Development of an Optical Probe for Measuring Blood Flow in Dental Pulp

To diagnose dental pulp vitality, electric pulp tester has been widely used, which is a method to test condition of nerve. However, especially in the case of patients with trauma, nerve desensitization could temporarily occur even though nerve might be recovered by blood flow within the pulp later, which implies that blood flow in dental pulp is also an important factor for diagnosing vitality. This paper described the development of a probe that relatively measured blood flow in dental pulp using photoplethysmography (PPG). The probe emits four different wavelength light sources including three visible and an infrared light. We tested which light source detect sensitively the blood flow in dental pulp. As a result, green light had the largest peak to peak voltage and the power spectrum among different wavelengths.
A Study on the Electro-magnetic Wave of Inductive Power Transfer System for Light Railway Transit

Traction motors for driving and power conversion devices using semiconductor switch are equipped with a transportation systems such as an electrical railway system. Power conversion devices have the possibility of malfunction by external electromagnetic waves. As a result, these could affect the safe operation of the railway. Moreover, the electromagnetic waves above safe limits will be harmful to the passengers inside the railway vehicles or anyone working around the rail-track. For this reason, the importance and need about the reliability check and complement of electromagnetic waves generated from the IPT(Inductive Power Transfer) system have been suggested for the safe application of the IPT system to the railway system. In this study, prediction for the electromagnetic wave properties was conducted through FEM(Finite Element Method) analysis of 5kW-class IPT system design model. Next, the 5kW IPT system prototype was made and then the small-scaled railway vehicle was made to mount the IPT system and the energy management system. Finally, the electromagnetic waves generated from the real small-scaled IPT system were measured and analyzed, and then the reliability check of predictions by FEM analysis were carried out.
Reliability Analysis of Arcing Measurement System Between Pantograph and Contact Wire

The current collection between pantograph and contact wire is a more critical component for need to train speed up in electric railway. The basic purpose of this paper is to establish a measure of determining arc by developing an arc detector assessment system. The system was designed under conditions of EN 50317 and simulations were conducted using the developed device. According to the results, it was possible to conduct certification tests following regulations of international standards. To check the validity of our approach for the intended application, we analysis contact loss of catenary system using developed arcing measurement system in Korea. The proposed arcing measurement system is expected to enhance precision of current collection quality performance assessment methods at high-speed lines and conventional lines.
