A cooperative control study of Jeju ±80kV 60MW HVDC for voltage stability enhancement

This paper describes CSC(Current Sourced Converters)-based HVDC operational strategy for voltage stability enhancement in the power system. In case of CSC-based HVDC system, rectifier and inverter consume reactive power up to about 60% of converter rating. Therefore, CSC-based HVDC is basically not useful system for voltage stability even if AC filters and shunt capacitors are attached. But, If the particular power system condition is fulfilled, CSC-based HVDC also can be the rapid reactive power source for voltage stability enhancement using a cooperative control with converter and AC filters/Shunt Capacitors. In this paper, the cooperative control algorithm is presented and simulated to
60MW HVDC system in Jeju island.

The demand for electrical power has been significantly increased to satisfy the customers. As a result, a power distribution system have been advanced by power system's interconnection, installation of distributed generator(DG) and so on. The improvable power distribution system included the problem of increasable fault current. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is one of the solutions to limit a fault current. Therefore, to solve the problem of fault current by SFCL, simulation was progressed and the simulation used a PSCAD/EMTDC.

The ac side current of an high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter is characterized by highly non-sinusoidal waveform. If the harmonic current is allowed to flow in the connected ac system, it may cause unacceptable levels of distortion. Therefore, ac side filters are required as part of the total HVDC converter station, in order to reduce the harmonic distortion of the ac side current and voltage to acceptably low levels. The ac side filters are also employed to compensate network requested reactive power because HVDC converters also consume substantial reactive power. Among different types of filters, double-tuned filters have been widely utilized for HVDC system. This paper presents two design methods of double-tuned filter; equivalent method and parametric method. Using a parametric method, in particular the paper proposes a new design algorithm for a realistic system. Finally, the performance of the design algorithm is evaluated for a 80kV HVDC system in Jeju island with PSCAD/EMTDC program. The results cleary demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed design method in harmonics elimination and steady-state stability.
A Study of Comparing and Analyzing Electric Vehicle Battery Charging System and Replaceable Battery System by Considering Economic Analysis

Electric vehicle usage is currently very low, but it will be increase with development of electric vehicle technology and a good government policy. Moreover in 2020, advanced electric vehicle manufacturing system will give high performance for its price and mass production. Electric vehicle will become widespread in Korea. From an operational and a planned viewpoint, the electric power demand should be considered in relation to diffusion of electric vehicles. This paper presents the impact of the various battery charge systems. A comparison is performed for electric vehicle charging methods such as, normal charging, fast charging, and battery swapping. In addition, economic evaluation for the replaceable battery system and the quick battery charging system is performed through basic information about charging Infrastructure installation cost. The results of the evaluation show that replaceable battery system is more economical and reliable in side of electric power demand than quick battery charging system.
Web based Online Outage Cost Assessment and Information System of Electrical Energy

This paper proposes a Web Based Online Outage Cost Assessment and Information System(WOOCAIS) for power system outage cost assessment. The proposed WOOCAIS is a kind of web based survey method for outage cost assessment. While conventional survey methods have done outage cost assessment based on survey paper lists collected by post mail or visiting customers, the proposed WOOCAIS is a web based online survey operation and assessment system. Therefore, it can curtail expenditure for survey and also is more convenient than conventional method. It will be set up for actual outage cost assessment system of KEPCO in South Korea in the near future. The WOOCAIS will be applied in various research and actual planning and operation areas. First of all, the assessed results may be not only applied as one of objective function for generation system and grid expansion but also operational planning problems in power system.
An Economic Analysis on Dual-fuel Engine Generation for Peak Load

Recently, lack of power reserve margin was observed quite often. In this paper, we studied the method to secure power source for a short time, to cut the utility power peak load, and to reduce the users electricity bills. Emergency diesel generator of an office building is to be converted into a dual-fuel engine generator which is responsible for a portion of the peak load. Compared to the conventional diesel fuel generator, the proposed dual-fuel engine is able to reduce the generation power cost by dual-fuel combustion, and it also mitigates the building's utility power peak load by charging the building's peak load. If the dead resources (a group of emergency dual-fuel engine generators), as a Virtual Power Plant, are operating in peak time, we can significantly reduce future large power development costs. We investigated the current general purpose electricity bills as well as the records of the building electric power usage, and calculated diesel engine generator renovation costs, generation fuel costs, driving conditions, and savings in electricity bills. The proposed dual-fuel engine generation method reduces 18.1% of utility power peak load, and turned out to be highly attractive investment alternative which shows more than 27% of IRR, 76 million won of NPV, and 20~53 months of payback periods. The results of this study are expected to be useful to developing the policy & strategy of the energy department.

In this paper, the iron loss was calculated using estimated iron loss coefficient at 650W Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) and 250W IPMSM. The iron loss coefficients was estimated different according to electrical steel material used to stator and rotor core in motor. Aspect of The rotating flux field and alternating flux field was confirmed by magnetic field behavior and harmonic analysis in stator core, the iron loss was calculated using flux density by Finite Element Method(FEM) and estimated coefficients by iron loss coefficient estimation proposed in this paper. The iron loss experiment was performed for verified to iron loss calculation, and the iron loss coefficients were verified by comparison of iron loss calculation value and experimental value.

This paper presents speed control characteristics of capacitor-run SPIM(Single Phase Induction Motor) using TRIAC for comparing and analyzing four kinds of voltage control methods such as supply voltage control, main winding voltage control, auxiliary winding voltage control and auxiliary winding voltage control without starting capacitor. The computer simulations were performed using MATLAB Simulink to show control characteristics of four voltage control methods. And their control characteristics were conformed by experiments for capacitor-run 90W SPIM as a sample motor. The results of simulations and experiments show that supply voltage control method has fast dynamic response characteristics and main winding voltage control method has higher power efficiency and can be implemented at lower system cost.

An active resonance damper for a DC Distributed Power System(DPS) with parallel loads is presented. Each pulse power load in a DC DPS comprises both a resistive power load and a step-up converter. The step-up converter behave as constant power load(CPL) when tightly regulated and usually cause a negative impedance instability problem. Furthermore, when an input filter is connected to a large constant power load, the instability of DC bus voltage. In this paper, a bidirectional DC/DC converter with a reduced storage capacitor quantitatively are proposed as a active resonance damper, to mitigate the voltage instability on the bus. The validity of the proposed method was confirmed by simulation and experimental works.

A Peaking Switch to Generate a High Voltage Pulse of Sub-nanosecond Rise Time

A triaxial Blumlein pulse forming line has been designed to generate a pulse whose voltage is ~300 kV, pulse duration is ~5 ns, and rise time is ~500 ps. It turns out, however, that the rise time of the pulse becomes much longer than 500 ps due to parasitic inductances and capacitances existing inside the system. A peaking switch has been developed to shorten the rise time of the pulse from Blumlein pulse forming line. In the peaking switch, a wedge-shaped dielectric material (MC 901 nylon) is employed to surround the electrode on the antenna side. This shape inhibits an abrupt change of the output impedance, thereby minimizing the reflection of the output pulse. Experimental results show that the peaking switch is capable of improving the rise time of the pulse at a level of 500 ps.
Harmonics Analysis of Leakage Current due to Artificial Contamination of Distribution Arresters

This paper reports the contamination performance of two distribution arresters (new and used ones) tested under three different contaminant conditions - clean fog, ESDD (equivalent salt deposit density) level (A, B, C, and D), and kaolin contamination conditions, and their leakage current, total leakage current, and component of the resistive leakage current were measured in order to diagnose arrester deterioration. The 3rd harmonics was larger than 5th and 7th ones for the arrester under the clean fog, and as the ESDD contamination level was applied, 5th one became relatively larger than 3rd one. Therefore, these results indicated that the resistive leakage current could be used for the diagnosis of the arresters.

Recently, applications of plasma display to the large public display and transparent display gain much attention. With this background, we report characteristics of opposite electrodes discharge cell with long electrode gap in comparison with conventional co-planar surface discharge. The cell size of test panel is

respectively. These gap dimensions provide similar driving voltage windows. Experimental results show that opposite discharge provides approximately four fold higher luminous efficacy compared with that of the surface discharge. Resulting efficacy is found to be higher than 19 lm/W in green phosphor with 10 KHz continuous pulse operation.
State- and Output-feedback Adaptive Controller for Pure-feedback Nonlinear Systems using Self-structuring Fuzzy System

Globally stabilizing adaptive fuzzy state- and output-feedback controllers for the fully nonaffine pure-feedback nonlinear system are proposed in this paper. By reformulating the original pure-feedback system to a standard normal form with respect to newly defined state variables, the proposed controllers require no backstepping design procedures. Avoiding backstepping makes the controller structure and stability analysis to be considerably simplified. For the global stabilty of the clossed-loop system, the self-structuring fuzzy system whose memebership functions and fuzzy rules are automatically generated and tuned is adopted. The proposed controllers employ only one fuzzy logic system to approximate unknown nonlinear function, which highlights the simplicity of the proposed adaptive fuzzy controller. Moreover, the output-feedback controller of the considered system proposed in this paper have not been dealt with in any literature yet.
An Auto Metrology Sampling Method Considering Quality and Productivity for Semiconductor Manufacturing Process

This paper proposes an automatic measurement sampling method for the semiconductor manufacturing process. The method recommends sampling rates using information of process capability indexes and production scheduling plan within the restricted metrology capacity. In addition, it automatically controls the measurement WIP (Work In Process) using measurement priority values to minimize the measurement risks and optimize the measurement capacity. The proposed sampling method minimizes measurement controls in the semiconductor manufacturing process and improves the fabrication productivity via reducing measurement TAT (Turn Around Time), while guaranteeing the level of process quality.
Semisupervised Learning Using the AdaBoost Algorithm with SVM-KNN

In this paper, we focus on solving the classification problem by using semisupervised learning strategy. Traditional classifiers are constructed based on labeled data in supervised learning. Labeled data, however, are often difficult, expensive or time consuming to obtain, as they require the efforts of experienced human annotators. Unlabeled data are significantly easier to obtain without human efforts. Thus, we use AdaBoost algorithm with SVM-KNN classifier to apply semisupervised learning problem and improve the classifier performance. Experimental results on both artificial and UCI data sets show that the proposed methodology can reduce the error rate.
Preceding Research for Estimating the Maximal Fat Oxidation Point through Heart Rate and Heart Rate Variability

Increasing the oxidation of fat through exercise is the recommendable method for weight control. Preceding researches have proposed increase in the usage of fat during exercise in stabilized state and under maximum exertion through aerobic training. However, such researches require additional equipment for gas analysis in order to measure the caloric value or gas exchange of subjects during exercise. Such equipments become highly restrictive for those exercise and cause substantially higher cost. According to this, we have presented the method of estimating the maximal fat oxidation point through changes in LF & HF which reflects changes in heart rate and the autonomic nervous system in order to induce exercise for a less restrictive and efficient fat oxidation than existing methods. We have conducted exercise stress test on subject with similar exercise abilities, and have detected the changes in heart rate and changes in LF & HF by measuring changes in fat oxidation and measuring ECG signals at the same time through a gas analyzer. Changes in heart rate and HRV of the subjects during exercising was detected through only the electrocardiographic signals from exercising and detected the point of maximum fat oxidation that differs from person to person. The experiment was carried out 16 healthy males, and used Modified Bruce Protocol, which is one of the methods of exercise stress test methods that use treadmill. The fat oxidation amount during exercise of all the subjects showed fat oxidation of more than 4Fkcal/min in the exercise intensity from about 5 minutes to 10 minutes. The correlation between the maximal fat oxidation point obtained through gas analysis and the point when 60% starts to be relevant in the range from -0.01 to 0.01 seconds for values of R-R interval from changes in heart rate had correlation coefficients of 0.855 in Kendall's method and in Spearman's rho, it showed significant results of it being p<0.01 with 0.950, respectively. Furthermore, in the changes in LF & HF, we have determined the point where the normalized area value starts to become the same as the maximal fat oxidation point, and the correlation here showed 0.620 in Kendall and 0.780 in Spearma of which both showed significant results as p<0.01.
Development of Wireless Respiratory Air Flow and Urinary Flow Measurement System for Home Healthcare

Medical system for personal health management recently changes its paradigm from hospital service to self home care based on ubiquitous technology for healthcare anywhere at any time. The present study developed a wireless bio-signal measurement system for patients to self manage pulmonary disease and benign prostate hyperplasia(BPH), both of which are chronic diseases with increasing frequency in modern society. Velocity-type respiratory air flow transducer adapted to develop respiratory module for pulmonary disease management was simplified in structure to measure uni-directional flow since most important diagnostic parameters are evaluated on the expiratory flow signal only. Standard weight measurement technique was introduced to obtain urinary flow signal for BPH management. Three load cell signals were acquired for averaging to minimize noise, followed by accuracy evaluation. Transmission and receiver modules were also developed with user program for wireless communication. Averaged relative errors were 2.05 and 1.02% for respiratory volume and maximal flow rate, respectively, and the relative error was 2.17% for urinary volume, demonstrating that both modules enabled very accurate measurements. Wireless communication distance was verified within 15m, long enough for home care application. The present system allows the user to select a necessary measurement module on a particular health demand and to immediately provide the self-test results, thus better quality health care would be possible.
A Experimental Study on the Heat Release Rate to activate Fire Detection Sensor

This paper presents a study on the analysis for activation time and threshold value of heat detection sensor using HRR(Heat Release Rate). And it is represented to quantity of heat to activate heat detection sensor. The experiment is conducted to measure activation time and HRR of fire detection sensor burning alcohol and n-heptane. In order to burn the alcohol and n-heptane using
steel pan and the quantity of alcohol and n-heptane are 2.5 L and 650 g, respectively. The results show that peak HRR are in case of alcohol 66.13 kW and in case of n-heptane 151.64 kW, respectively. Total heat releases of heat detection sensor are in case of alcohol approximately 20.7 MJ and in case of n-heptane approximately 18 MJ, respectively.
A Study on Properties of Thermal Insulation Board Prepared by Porous Silica Aerogel

High porous silica aerogel/polyurethane polymer composite was manufactured by cross-linking polymerization of polyurethane foaming process. The properties of microstructure, mechanical strength, and thermal properties were investigated for its various applications. The superhydrophobic silica aerogel powders were used for highly thermal insulation filler materials. The thermal conductivities can be resulted 0.07 W/mK to 0.13 W/mK, by decreasing the contents of silica aerogels in composite materials. It is found that the polymerization formulation by organic binders can be applied to heavy industires, building materials, and various industries.
Efficient Driving Pattern of the Railway Vehicles for Driving Energy Saving

In this paper, we propose an efficient driving pattern which consumes less energy for driving from one station to next. Three driving patterns for four sections in the No. 5 subway line of Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corp. are compared for the energy consumption, the maximum speed, and the powering time. It turns out that the powering time and the maximum speed should be decreased as much as possible in order to achieve the efficient driving.

Urban rail transit tends to global grounding system in order to control ground potential rise and potential differences between electric equipments. In addition, global grounding system can discharge the large capacity surge current to the ground safely. Since some railway electric equipments are installed all section of line, the global grounding system connected with the connecting grounding wire is more effectively. However, if the fault occurred in the connecting grounding wire area, some dangerous voltage is generated. So, the installation of additional grounding rod will be required. In this study, the global grounding system is simulated using CDEGS program to analyze the divergence spacing of additional ground rod depending on dangerous electric potential characteristics. Grounding net of the each station is modelled in depending on the size of the platform, and the spacing of the connecting grounding rod are compared 50m, 100m, 250m and 400m. Simulation results considering of earth resistivity and underground condition of the connecting grounding wire, spacing of the connecting grounding rod is that less than 250m to spacing of the ground rod was appropriately confirmed.
A Study on Variation of the Dynamic Characteristic of Supply Voltage According to the Track Environment and Spatial Distribution as Driving of Urban Transits

It is important to consider supply voltage stability in case of design and construction of a substation at electric railway because a urban transit is operated by electricity and it is driven simultaneous in the same section. This paper study on variation of the dynamic characteristic of supply voltage according to the track environment and spatial distribution as driving of urban transits. Simulation tool, TOM(Train Operations Model) software is used to ensure stability of feeder system being used around the world. As results of simulation, voltage of the contact wire is in limits on driving operation diagram of urban transits. Also, it has confirmed that there is a correlation the phase current, depending on the speed of urban transit and track environment like vertical gradients and curve radius.
