Development of Common Database for the Application Programs of Distribution Management System

In recent years, the development of application programs for distribution system analysis and control has been essential part for distribution management system (DMS). In this paper, we propose the common database for application programs of distribution management system. The proposed database model has several characteristics as followings. First, the proposed database model is designed for the common use of almost the whole distribution application software. The static equipment model and dynamic type tables are mixed and the parallel table structure is applied. Second, the linked list structure of database are used for the fast processing of applications. The database model includes the hierarchy and non-hierarchy distribution system structure. Third, the reduction method of distribution database is applied. For this, we present the network reduction rules. The basic concept of reduction rules are the electrical unification of successive line section which has not lateral branches and the removal of simple lateral branches which has no devices and other laterals. Proposed database model is tested for the Jeju system of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). Through the test, we verified that the proposed database structure can be effectively used to accomplish the distribution system operation.
A Study on Data Management and Communication Infrastructure Based Upon Standards for Smart Grid Operation

Recently, there is a rising interest in smart grid operating system which manages various types of distributed generation, smart meters, and electric vehicles with power grid. Considering the features of smart grid environment, the interoperability should be one of the important factors to build smart grid environment successfully. To secure interoperability, smart grid operating system should conform to some standards in terms of the data representation and communication. CIM and OPC-UA are the international standards widely used in smart grid domain for enabling interoperability. They provide common information model and the unified architecture for communicating between each systems or applications. In this paper, we illustrate a smart grid operating system that we have developed to secure interoperability between not only applications but also numerous legacy systems(applications) by implementing CIM based information model and OPC-UA based communication interface services.
Study on the Noise Reduction of BLDC Fan Motor by Cogging Torque Reduction

It is very important to diminish noise source of electric motor systems that are used for home appliance area. We have studied on the noise reduction of BLDC motor, mainly focusing on reducing noise source from cogging torque. This noise source causes resonance of fan & motor systems. This study showed that the higher harmonic component of the cogging torque was the main factor for noise generation. Therefor, to reduce noise of bldc motor for refrigerator, this study suggested peanut shaped magnet which surface flux has similar sinusoidal wave form.
Efficiency Analysis for Water Turbine Generator of Agricultural Reservoir

If the factory test efficiency and field operation efficiency of water turbine are different from each other, issues for efficiency warranty can be raised. So, This paper shows the result for comparative analysis of field operating efficiency vs plant testing efficiency of the water turbine generator installed in agricultural reservoir. The efficiency of the induction generator is analyzed by the change of rotational speed with the parameter obtained by test, the efficiency of water turbine is calculated by the change of head with the design flow. Efficiency deviation of induction generator is lower but the variation of developed power is pretty high near the rated speed and the efficiency variation of water turbine is high by the fluctuation of head for constant flow. It was found that factory test efficiency and total efficiency of water turbine generator calculated according to the rotational speed are very close.

In this paper, design of Wound Rotor Synchronous Motor(WRSM) for Integrated Starter and Generator(ISG) is performed based on Finite Element Analysis(FEA). WRSM can control not only magnitude and phase of armature current, but also field current. Thus, various control methods can be considered. Since driving characteristic of WRSM depends greatly on the control method, characteristic analysis accoding to possible driving current combination is reguired. Especially in high speed region, the control method that reduces unnecessary d-axis current by reducing field current is possible, which is similar to field weakening control. By the current combination reducing field and d-axis current, the design minimizing copper loss to increase efficiency on identical driving point is possible. In this paper, high efficient WRSM is designed applying the current combination which can minimize copper loss on each driving point.
Speed Control of Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor using Variable Gain PI Controller

This paper provides a technical review of speed control using variable gain PI algorithm for BLDC(Brushless DC) motor. Usually the PI control is used in many motor applications, but a general PI control has problems of overshooting and disturbance for response. By the change of PI gain in motor control operation, these problems can be solved. To find the optimized PI gains for BLDC motor control, many control methods have been proposed. In this paper, the control algorithm with a variable PI gain is applied to improve overshooting response in transient region and rapid load disturbance rejection. Fixed gain and variable gain PI controls are compared. The validity of the propose method is verified by experiment.
Switching-Level Operation Analysis of MMC-based Back-to-Back Converter for HVDC Application

This paper describes a switching-level operation analysis of BTB(Back-To-Back) converter for HVDC(high voltage DC) application based on MMC(modular multi-level converter). A switching-level operation analysis for BTB converter is very important to understand the converter operation in detail and check the voltage and current transients in each components. However, the development of switching-level simulation model for the actual size BTB Converter is very difficult because the MMC normally has more than 150 sub-modules for each arm. So, a switching level simulation model for the 11-level MMC-based BTB converter was developed with PSCAD/EMTDC software, which has 12 sub-modules for the positive arm and another 12 sub-modules for the negative arm. The DC-voltage balance algorithm, the circulating-current reduction algorithm, the harmonic reduction algorithm, and the redundancy operation algorithm were included in this simulation model. The developed simulation model can be utilized to analyze the MMC-based BTB converter for HVDC application in switching level and to develop the protection scheme for the MMC-based BTB converter for HVDC application.
PMSM Torque Control Algorithm under One Phase Open-Fault in Three-Phase Inverter Condition

A torque control algorithm suitable for detecting an open circuit failure in which one of the three phases is unable to supply power to a motor in the permanent magnet synchronous motor is presented in this paper. When the failure occurs in the inverter, the output torque of motor is restricted. A new method which is implemented by using only a processor algorithm internally without any hardware redundancy circuit is proposed. A simulation and experimental study is carried out with a three phase inverter system to show the validity of the proposed method.
The Calculation Method of the Breakdown Voltage for the Drain Region with the Spherical Structure in High Voltage Analog CMOS

A calculation method of the breakdown voltage for the Drain region with the spherical structure in high voltage analog CMOS is proposed. The Drain depletion region is divided into many sub-regions and the doping concentration of each sub-region is assumed to be constant. The field in each sub-region is calculated by the integration of the net charge and the breakdown voltage is calculated using the ionization integral method. The breakdown voltage calculated using the proposed method shows the maximum relative error of 3.3% compared with the result of the 2-dimensional device simulation using BANDIS.
Plane Wave Scattering Induced Resonant Modes of Spherical Resonator

Plane wave scattering from a spherical resonator is calculated by solving the combined field integral equation (CFIE) with Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG) basis functions and the moment method. The calculations show that magnetic and electric dipoles are found at resonant modes. These characteristics are confirmed by radiation patterns in the far field region. In addition, an analysis of a magnetodielectric sphere is discussed.
A Study on the Controller Design for EMS System using Disturbance Observer

In this paper, we study a disturbance observer (DOB) based controller for an EMS(Electro-Magnetic Suspension) system in presence of mass uncertainty and input disturbance. The DOB based controller is employed in order to compensate the modeling uncertainty and attenuate disturbance signals. For the design of DOB based controller, the Jacobain linearization of nonlinear system model equation is used. Computer simulation is carried out for nonlinear model in order to compare the performance of the proposed DOB controller with that of the conventional PID controller. The simulation results show that the substantial improvement in the performance can be achieved by the proposed DOB controller.
Camera Calibration and Barrel Undistortion for Fisheye Lens

A lot of research about camera calibration and lens distortion for wide-angle lens has been made. Especially, calibration for fish-eye lens which has 180 degree FOV(field of view) or above is more tricky, so existing research employed a huge calibration pattern or even 3D pattern. And it is important that calibration parameters (such as distortion coefficients) are suitably initialized to get accurate calibration results. It can be achieved by using manufacturer information or lease-square method for relatively narrow FOV(135, 150 degree) lens. In this paper, without any previous manufacturer information, camera calibration and barrel undistortion for fish-eye lens with over 180 degree FOV are achieved by only using one calibration pattern image. We applied QR decomposition for initialization and Regularization for optimization. With the result of experiment, we verified that our algorithm can achieve camera calibration and image undistortion successfully.
Demosaicking Method using High-order Interpolation with Parameters

This paper presents a demosaicking method based on high-order interpolation with parameters. Demosaicking is an essential process in capturing color images through a single sensor-array. Thus, a lot of methods including the Hamilton-Adams(HA) method has been studied in this literature. However, the image quality depends on various factors such as contrast and correlation in color space; existing algorithms depend on test images in use. Consequently, a new test image set was suggested to develop demosaicking algorithms properly. According to previous studies, the HA method shows high performances with the new test data set. In this paper, we improve the HA method using high-order interpolation with parameters. Also, we provide an analysis and formulations for the proposed method. To evaluate our method, we compare our method with the existing methods both objectively and subjectively. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is superior to the existing methods.
Estimation of Spatial Variations in a Light Source by Optical Fiber Sensory System

The purpose of this study is to find the new method for estiming the spatial variations in a light source with utilizing the optical fiber sensory system. With this aim, firstly the asymmetry in the beam profile of a light source is evaluated by using the tipped optical fiber with 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 45-degree angle. Secondly the variation of position in a light source is estimated by adjusting the relative position between the light source unit (XYZ stage, LED, Optical fiber) and the receiver unit (Photodiode, XYZ stage). Our experimental results show that the spatial variation of a light source can be resolved in terms of the variations in beam profile with varying the tip angle of an optical fiber and adjusting the relative distance between the light source unit and the receiver.
Estimation of the Light Intensity by Using Bright-Chip LED Sensory System

The light intensity which represents the relative amount of brightness and darkness is very important feature to discern the color hue and its relevant information. With this aim, we devise a new optical system and method to analyze the light intensity. Our suggested system including a phototransistor and white-high-brightness chip light-emitting diode intend estimate the contrast value utilizing Image Research Institute(I.R.I.) Hue & Tone samples which includes 120 color sheets arranged by the color hue and tone. As a result, we confirmed that the brightness of the color checker can be accurately estimated by a high-brightness light-emitting-diode optical system.

This paper analyzes of PD occurrence position through an analysis of the arrival time difference between the GIS partial discharge signal. Because of GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) is a facility very important power equipment and as part of the equipment that make up the power system, the stabilization of the power industry, which accounted for 88.5% share of GIS substation in the form of a substation is an important equipment for power supply. In the situation where we are gradually expanding the need for preventive diagnosis in order to improve the efficiency of equipment management and failure prevention for Preventive diagnosis. In this paper as a method for extracting pre-defect of failure of GIS Apply the average value method of calculating the 5 times each using a pulse of the first time of the second pulse (
) with an oscilloscope generation position PD(Partial Discharge). the results of GIS internal inspection, the partial discharge of the actual the position of the partial discharge was confirmed with an accuracy of about 82% of positions. Arrival time difference in the most effective manner if the partial discharge of GIS internal occurs by applying the averaging method and TOA(Time of arrival) method, the partial discharge occurs you through the measurement and analysis of PD signal occurs was confirmed in the experiment are presented and diagnostic methods location tracking.
Failure Rate Estimation of MOV for Condition Monitoring of Surge Protective Devices

MOV(Metal Oxide Varistor) is the most important part of SPD(Surge Protective Device) which can protect electric facilities from an impulse current such as a lightning. So far, the fault of MOVs have decided only by surge count without considering magnitude of surge current and an amount of input energy. This paper proposed the fault prediction algorithm for the MOV using look up table made by surge count and input current data which have non-linear characteristics for input current and are estimated by high voltage experimental results. Proposed algorithm was proved by experiment on verification at a high voltage laboratory.
Study to Analyze the Grounding System in the 20 kHz Power Installation

In this paper, carried out for optimal ground system for ensuring safety for electricity used to power equipment in the 20 kHz frequency. Now the grounding system of the mesh electrode, electrode rods are installed for power plant safety and protection against electric shock. However, the electrical equipment grounding system in the 20 kHz were considering the increasing grounding impedance due to the high frequency and the magnetic shielding. But until now, there has been little research on the grounding system. To solve this problem, In this paper was proposed optimal grounding system due to the experiment using a mesh electrode, rod electrode, aluminum plate electrodes. Measurement results, grounding resistance was depending on the material of the electrode grounding resistance. In addition, the leakage current (induced) appeared to be affected depending on the type of electrode.
Characteristics of the Fault Current and the Protection for Superconducting and Normal Conducting Limiter combined with a Transformer

With increasing demand of power, the equipment of power system is enlarging and the absolute capacity is going up. As a result, when a fault occurs, the fault current is consistently increasing. Therefore, I suggested some solution for limiting the fault current more efficiently. This study shows the characteristics of superconducting limiting elements and normal conducting elements combined with a transformer. We performed a short-circuit test about the fault current by using SCR switching control system operated from a CT. When short circuit accidents happened in the secondary side of a transformer, fault currents flowed and a SCR switching control system was operated. It resulted in a decrease of the fault current in the limited elements of third winding connected in parallel. For this test, we used YBCO thin films and normal conducting elements as the limited elements. Within a cycle, a superconducting fault current limiter with YBCO thin films reduced more than 90% of fault current because the resistance of superconducting elements sustainedly grew. On the other hand, the limiter with normal conductors limited as much as a set value because its resistance characteristic was linear. Consequently, in case of the limiter with superconductor, limiting range of the circuit was wide but the range of protective detection was undefined. In contrast, as for the limiter with normal conductors, limiting range and protection duty were appropriate.
A Study on Physical Characteristics of Silica Aerogel/Polymer Composite Materials

Thermal insulation material was prepared by cross-linking chemical reaction of silica aerogel and epoxy resin, which has a high porous and vacant properties. The structural, mechanical, and thermal properties were analyzed in order to verify its application for industrial and electrical applications. The thermal conductivities were changed from 115 mW/mK to 75 mW/mK by reducing the contents of nano-porous silica areogel powders. The compressive loading is also decreased by increasing the contents of silica aerogels by 20 wt% in aerogel/epoxy composites. It is concluded that the formulated composite materials can be applied to building materials, electronics parts, and heavy industries.
New Train Detection Method using DC Magnetic Field Variation

The reason of train location detection is generally the train interval control between the railway stations and the train path control in the railway station yard in order to avoid train collision. It is very important to know the train location for shortening the train headway, and improving the efficiency of railway maintenance as well as the safe operation of trains. Therefore, the accurate detection of train location is the prerequisite technology in railway signalling system. The track circuit and the wheel sensor of rolling stock have been used to detect the train location widely in urban railway as well as high speed train. The track circuit is continuously monitored by electrical equipment to detect the absence of the train and the tachometer and encoder is used for the wheel sensor to measure the train speed. But speed sensor failures are frequent due to the extremely harsh operating conditions encountered in rail vehicle. The CBTC(Communication based Train Control) system has been used in urban railway system recently. But the installation of CBTC system is very high and the modification of design is difficult. This paper deals with the feasibility of new train location detection method using magnetic sensors.

A electric railway is unique system that electric trains consumed huge electric power are travelled and is much interested with EMC. There were several problems exceeding the standard in the frequency range of 9kHz to 150kHz because the radiation noises were moved the higher frequency range according to developing the power electronic technology. It is studied the experimental confirmation of main noise source on the electric train and the analytic simulation for reducing the noise level in this paper.
Safety Analysis and Safety Measures of 22900/1200V Oil Immersed Transformer at Power Supply System

Subway is electrified railway system nowadays, in which liquid dielectric transformers have been widely used, though mold type transformers are replacing it. The transformers supplies large electric power and have innate hazards causing accidents under operation. A number of researcher have carried out on failures of it and have oriented to identify transformer's failure causes and how to maintain it healthy state. The transformer failures can cause serious accidents which can provoke economic loss and leads persons to kill. In this paper, we carried out a safety activity to reveal hazards and to estimate risk of subway liquid dielectric transformers using FMEA, HAZOP and What-if methods. In case of installing safety devices in oil immersed transformer, we tried to evaluate an effect on a subsystem's failure rate. We proposed how to design subsystem failure rate and safety device failure rates.
Video Image Analysis in Accordance with Power Density of Arcing for Current Collection System in Electric Railway

This paper presents an analysis methods for current collection quality in catenary system by means of video image based monitoring system. Arcing is the sparking at the interface point between pantograph and contact wire when the electric trains have traction current values at speed. Percentage of arcing at maximum line speed is measurable parameters for compliance with the requirements on dynamic behaviour of the interface between pantograph and contact wire in accordance with requirement of IEC and EN standards. The arc detector and video is installed on a train aim at the trailing contact strip according to the travel direction. The arc detector presented and measured verity of value such as the duration and power density of each arc and the video image is measured a image when the arc is occurred in pantograph. In this paper we analysis of video image in accordance with power density of arcing from arc detector and compared with video image and power density of arcing so as to produce quality of arcing from image.
