Development of New Effectiveness Assessment Indices of Pumped Storage Power Plant

The pumped storage power plants have excellent load following characteristics. It can also be committed quickly for synchronous reserve when it is in the generating mode because it can readily increase its generating power and, consequently, increases the overall system reliability. There are strong incentives for standing the system reliability. Additionally,
emission can be typically impacted due to operation of pumped generators. The increase or decrease of
depends on the generation mix. This paper proposes evaluation of reliability, economy and environment of power system considering pumped generator. This paper describes three case studies of the reliability and economy and environment according to capacity factor and storage capacity of pumped generators. The probabilistic production simulation model is used in this paper. The practicality and effectiveness of the proposed approach are demonstrated by simulation studies for a real size power system model on the
power plan in Korea.
A Parameter Estimation Method of Multiple Time Interval for Low Frequency Oscillation Analysis

In this paper, we propose a new parameter estimation method that can deal with the data of multiple time intervals simultaneously. If there are common modes in the multiple time intervals, it is possible to create a new polynomial by summing the coefficients of the prediction error polynomials of each time interval. By calculating the roots of the new polynomial, it is possible to estimate the common modes that exist in each time interval. The accuracy of the proposed parameter estimation method has been proven by using appropriate test signals.
Parameter Selection Method for Power System Stabilizer of a Power Plant based on Hybrid System Modeling

The paper describes the parameter tuning of power system stabilizer (PSS) for a power plant based on hybrid system modeling. The existing tuning method based on bode plot and root locus is well applied to keep power system stable. However, due to linearization of power system and an assumption that the parameter ratio of the lead-lag compensator in PSS is fixed, the results cannot guarantee the optimal performances to damp out low-frequency oscillation. Therefore, in this paper, hybrid system modeling, which has a DAIS (differential-algebraic-impusive-switched) structure, is applied to conduct nonlinear modeling for power system and find optimal parameter set of the PSS. The performances of the proposed method are carried out by time domain simulation with a single machine connected to infinite bus (SMIB) system.
A Study of Restructured Residential Electricity Pricing toward the Competitive Power Market

Korea electric power industry had been under vertical monopoly but is typically getting restructured for free competition. An ideal pricing system under the competitive market system is `unbundled pricing system` and `marginal pricing system`, but the current pricing system still adheres to the traditional bundled system and the average cost pricing system. Especially, progressive electricity rates for residential use reflect governmental policy-making which is focused on income redistribution & welfare, industrial supports and energy saving. This study proposes new and reasonable residential electricity pricing systems which are Time-Of-Use (TOU) and Real-Time Pricing (RTP) to reflect variations in the wholesale price of electricity. It also presents examples of various tariffs for residential electricity pricing systems.

As the various kinds of load who generate higher harmonics increases according as the power electronics technology develops, harmonic treatment standard is proposed by IEEE and IEC. Because establishment of harmonic reduction device is required for existent installment to satisfy harmonic treatment standard, the problem of investment charge and installation space increasing may be occurred. In order to solve these problems, a novel transformer connection method using principles of PCT and ZED is suggested.
Drive Characteristics of Outer-rotor Type SRM Considering Dual Operating Modes

As a direct drive type washing machine requires two operating modes, washing and spinning modes, a design of the motor with high efficiency in each mode is not applicable to a conventional procedure. To achieve the requirements, a multi-pole outer rotor type switched reluctance motors are considered. To select a suitable motor type for the application, a static toque is compared based on the FEM analysis. The selected type is obtained for high and wide toque than other types of the motor. Further, the pole shape and arc are optimized to meet the required torque and torque ripple. To verify the proposed structure, the prototype is designed and manufactured. And the simulation and experimental results verify the validity of the proposed structure.
Wireless Power Transfer System Insensitive to Pickup`s Posture

Recently, wireless power transfer (WPT) system is widely studied. WPT system is very attractive because it removes power cables from home appliances, office equipment and battery chargers for electric vehicle. However, pickup`s posture affects the performance greatly. In this paper a new pickup system whose output voltage is less sensitive to its posture is proposed. The proposed pickup system is composed of three coils perpendicular to each other. A prototype is constructed and tested, and its usefulness is verified.
Sensorless Fuzzy MPPT Control for a Small-scale Wind Power Generation System with a Switched-mode Rectifier

This paper proposes a low-cost switched-mode rectifier (SMR) for a small-scale wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) system. Also, a sensorless Fuzzy MPPT control is realized by the proposed system. In the PMSG system with the SMR, the synchronous impedance can be replaced as the input inductor of a boost converter. Moreover, the sensorless MPPT control using the Fuzzy technique is carried out by the duty-ratio regulation of the SMR. The relation between the generating power and the duty-ratio is ruled by the chain rule. The wind turbine model is implemented by the squirrel cage induction motor and generated the variable torque when the generator speed is varied. To verify the performance of the proposed system, simulation and experimental results are executed.
Development of Medical Ruby Laser Power Supply using LLC Resonant Converter

LLC resonant converter is used to control laser power density in ruby laser power supply. Zero voltage switching(ZVS) is implemented to minimize the switching loss by the LLC resonant converter. Laser output power is investigated and experimented by changing the output current. That current is controled by the charging voltage of capacitor. From those results, we obtained the maximum laser output of 1.94J at the discharge current of 860A and the pulse repetition rate of 1Hz.
Effect of Modified Fiber Tip on Joint Angle Measurement

The measurement of joint angle is important to evaluate the patient`s disability. The modified fiber tip and light propagation of the developed fiber sensor were investigated to increase the range of angle detection. Different shapes of fiber tips were manufactured with a polishing machine to deliver light signal in various patterns. Output signals were analyzed to obtain joint angle change with inverse polynomial models. The measured joint angles were displayed with LabVIEW program and the reliability was tested by comparing with a commercial angle sensor. This method can be used in rehabilitation field to determine patient`s progress.
Visualization of Basal Body Temperature and Its Frequency Spectrum Analysis Using an Android Platform Smartphone

The daily recording of basal body temperature is the most useful method of determining the term of ovulation by resolving the rise in temperature. To support this aim, Graphical User Interface (GUI) system is designed and implemented to visualize the basal body temperature variations on daily basis by using android platform smartphone with programming multi-thread Java modules. To estimate the occurrence of ovulation cycle, a new method of analyzing the low-frequency features including a DC level and the second largest peak in frequency spectrum domain is proposed with interpreting the prominent features into the average basal-body temperature variations and a menstrual cycle.
Movement Characteristic Analysis for Unconstrained Sleep Efficiency Analysis Based on the Smartphone

In this research, we designed representative motion patterns that possibly occurred in sleep situation and evaluated the feasibility of the smartphone based movement recording technique. For this, we designed 7 motions such as posture change, head movement, arm movement (vertical, horizontal), leg movement and hand movement (flipping, folding). Movement was recorded by using the smartphone and the actimetry device simultaneously for comparing the feasibility of smartphone based recording. As a result of experiment, we found that the smartphone based movement recording well reflects the body movement, however, it shows the limitation in recording the small local movement such as hand motion compared with the reference actimetry device, Actiwatch.
Multi-biological Signal-based Smart Trigger System for Cardiac MRI

In cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI), heart and respiratory motions are one of main obstacles in obtaining diagnostic quality of images. To synchronize CMRI to the physiological motions, ECG and respiratory gatings are commonly used. In this paper multi-biological signal (ECG, respiratory, and SPO2) based smart trigger system is proposed. By using multi-biological signal, the proposed system is robust to the induced noise such as eddy current when gradient pulsing is continuously applied during the examination. Digital conversion of the multi-biological signal makes the system flexible in implementing smart and intelligent algorithm to detect cardiac and respiratory motion and to reject arrhythmia of the heart. The digital data is used for real-time trigger, as well as signal display, and data storage which may be used for retrospective signal processing.
Design of Drug Treatment for HIV Infected Patients: Disturbance Observer based Control Technique

In this paper, we propose a drug treatment protocol for the three state HIV infection model that explicitly includes the concentration of healthy T cells, infected T cells, and HIV. While most of the previous methods are not able to achieve the treatment goal in the presence of modelling errors, the proposed method is designed so as to compensate for the model uncertainties. Based on the Jacobain linearization of nonlinear HIV infection model, disturbance observer(DOB) based control is employed to design the drug treatment for the HIV patients. Computer simulation is carried out for nonlinear model in order to compare the performance of the proposed method with that of the conventional technique. The simulation results show that, in the presence of parameter uncertainties, the substantial improvement in the performance can be achieved by the proposed DOB controller.
Development of Femoral Bone Model of Human Body for Simulation of Side Falls

Due to the increasing needs of anti-fall device for elderly, it is required to develop the test rigs for fall simulation. The femoral bone model consists of silicone and steel is used as an effective device to simulate falls. In this work, we propose five different femoral bone models and analyse them by using a commercial FEA tool. It has been shown that two kinds of simplified models exhibit the simulated side falls with an error range of ~1% in the impact load of femoral neck compared with full model. Especially, the upper tissue model is found to provide us with the best efficient test environment, attributable to its simple structure.
A Study of PPG Wave and Pulse Measurement on Radial Artery Using Digital Potentiometer and Exponentially Weighted Moving Average Filter

In this paper, through a digital potentiometer and exponentially weighted moving average filter, pulse and PPG waveform measurable device was fabricated in radial artery. If this device is not proper about signal size in analog part, MCU can judge easily by adjusted amplification through digital potentiometer, using exponentially weighted moving average filter is able to filter out more clear value of ADC. I presumed pulse rate as value of measuring time between point of maximum contraction from sensing signal in radial artery of wrist. Therefore, this means can measure stable pulse rate and PPG waveform, finger as well as radial artery, whether signal size of each person is different finger as well as radial artery.
A Preliminary Study on the Preference Assessment on Individuals with Specific Display Location in Screen based on Electroencephalogram and Emotional Assessment

This paper proposed a evaluation method for individual`s subjective preferred location using EEG and emotional assessment. Visual stimulus were sequentially presented a total six points(the top and the bottom of the left, the top and the bottom of the center and the top and the bottom of the right on the screen). EEG were measured from twenty subjects according to each six points. At the same time, we were executed evaluation of subjects preferred location from emotional assessment. Alpha and beta wave were measured in Fp1, Fp2, F7 and F8 location, followed by ten to twenty electrode system. Correlations and variations of alpha and beta wave from each channel were calculated and analyzed. Because of the number of subjects population under 30, we used Speareman test for a correlation analysis between alpha and beta wave. Also, emotional assessments which compose of visual sense harmony, visual sense stability, stability of position and the visibility were performed and were analyzed by average and frequency. After visual stimulus, emotional assessments were performed. From the variance analysis of EEG, beta wave from F7 was appeared statistically significant as significance probability of 0.006. Reliable Control for Linear Dynamic Systems with Time-varying Delays and Randomly Occurring Disturbances

In this paper, the problem of reliable control of linear systems with time-varying delays, randomly occurring disturbances, and actuator failures is investigated. It is assumed that actuator failures occur when disturbances affect to the systems. Firstly, by using a suitable Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and some recent techniques such as Wirtinger-based integral inequality and reciprocally convex approach, stabilization criterion for nominal systems with time-varying delays is derived. Secondly, the proposed method is extended to the reliable
controller design for linear dynamic systems with time-varying delays, randomly occurring disturbances, and actuator failures. Since nonlinear matrix inequalities (NLMIs) are involved in proposed results, the cone complementarity algorithm will be introduced. Finally, two numerical examples are included to show the effectiveness of the proposed criteria.
Design and Implementation of the Pitching Machine with Mobility using the Android Smartphone

Pitching machines have been around for many years for casual amusement purpose or professional athletes` training usage, and so forth. The current pitching machines are usually built on the firm ground and do not have any mobility function. In this paper, we develop a pitching machine that has both ball-shooting and mobility functions. Our developed pitching machine consists of two parts. The upper body part has a function of shooting a ball using two DC motors and the lower body part has a function of mobility like mobile robots by using two wheels governed by DC motors. All these functions are operated wirelessly by Android smartphones via bluetooth. The control of each DC motor is done by
-PID control method in which the gain tuning is simplied by using a single parameter
. Simulation and actual experiment show that our developed pitching machine has both nontrivial shooting and mobility features.
Robust Dissipative Filtering for Polytopic Uncertain Singular Systems in Continuous & Discrete Time

This paper considers the problem of continuous and discrete time dissipative filter design method for the singular systems with polytopic uncertainties. Two bounded real lemmas (BRL) for the robust filters of dissipative singular systems along with the polytopic uncertainties are proposed on the basis of Lyapunov criterion. The sufficient conditions for both continuous and discrete time dissipative filter design methods are derived using the obtained BRL by linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach. Finally, the validities of the proposed methods are shown by numerical examples.
CT Reconstruction using Discrete Cosine Transform with non-zero DC Components

This paper proposes a method to reduce operation time using discrete cosine transform and to improve image quality by the DC gain correction. Conventional filtered back projection (FBP) filtering in the frequency domain using Fourier transform, but the filtering process uses complex number operations. To simplify the filtering process, we propose a filtering process using discrete cosine transform. In addition, the image quality of reconstructed images are improved by correcting DC gain of sinograms. To correct the DC gain, we propose to find an optimum DC weight is defined as the ratio of sinogram DC and optimum DC. Experimental results show that the proposed method gets better performance than the conventional method for phantom and clinical CT images.
A Study on the Appropriate Tunnel Bracket using in Korea Peninsula

Tunnel bracket is used in railway tunnel area in order to maintain insulation. Insulator performance evaluation test is proceeded refer to IEC 61109 but it is impossible to reflect all the field condition where insulator installed. Korea has clear four season in climatic condition and peninsula with lots of mountain in geomorphology condition. Tunnel bracket material which used in korea are butyl rubber, polymer and silicone. Most of them were installed without any internal climatic and geomorphology condition. According to the KORAIL operation data most of the insulator break down occurs in tunnel. So interval of inspection period is shorter then any other insulator and lots of maintenance cost incurs. Most major railway advanced country such as germany and japan maintain tunnel bracket with their own experience. For example visual inspection carried out with in one or two years and detailed inspection carried out between three to five years. This paper analyzed materials and shapes of tunnel bracket to in order to find optimized one in korea peninsula. Proposed bracket were tested under regulation and experience field data. Finally it was installed at the field and evaluated until now.
The Development of Equalizing Spacer for Minimization of Voltage Drop according to DC Feeder Extension

This paper described the development of equalizing spacer for minimization of voltage drop according to DC feeder extension. Power consumption is increased as shorter interval of train driving time and transportation capacity increase in urban subway. Therefore we investigated voltage drop of catenary at a point in case of traction driving of a train in parallel to the DC power supply system. Based on it`s result, equalizing spacer is designed and fabrication to minimize the voltage drop in accordance with the power supply line arranged in three rows, and then its performance was confirmed that the stress distribution of main body and the distributed load are satisfied through the body structure modeling.
A Study on Time Synchronization for Programmable Electronic Systems of Train Control

The issue of safety insurance in PES(Programmable Electronic Systems) has been provoked because PES is difficult to define failure modes which are appeared in many different ways. But the PES applications extend rapidly in various areas. One of the solutions for PES safety insurance is voting which PES is used by comparing the outputs of several PES. The time synchronization of the PES is necessary for this reliable voting. The voting must be carried out with the outputs from same time inputs. There are several methods for time synchronization of the PES. In this paper, we discussed two modes of the time synchronization which are mutual synchronization of several PES and using UTC(Universal Time Clock).
