Analysis of Effect of HVDC Transmission System on the Transient Stability

The characteristics of Korean power systems are large capacity of generation sites and concentrated load in Seoul metropolitan area. According to the national generation facility plan, more generation facilities are needed to be constructed as the electrical demands are forecasted to increase. Moreover, the size of generation sites are expected to increase, too. Therefore transient stability problems become worse and worse. Recently, the necessity of HVDC has been raised to overcome the difficulty of constructing HVAC transmission lines. This paper shows the analysis of transient stability when HVDC transmission system is added to the power system consisting of large generation sites.
Substation Bus Voltage Angle Calculation Method Using Voltage Angle Difference Measured at the Tie Switch in the Distribution Line

Distribution networks are operated in radial fashion during the normal state. Loop configuration is also required temporally in case of live load transfer among the adjacent feeders. Voltage angles of each substation buses are very important data in order to calculate power flow of the loop structured distribution feeders. This paper proposes substation bus voltage angle calculation method using voltage angle difference measured at the normally open tie switches. Simulation case studies using Matlab simulink have been performed to establish feasibility of proposed method.
A Study on Modeling of Users a Load Usage Pattern in Home Energy Management System Using a Copula Function and the Application

This paper addresses the load usage scheduling in the HEMS for residential power consumers. The HEMS would lead the residential users to change their power usage, so as to minimize the cost in response to external information such as a time-varying electricity price, the outside temperature. However, there may be a consumer`s inconvenience in the change of the power usage. In order to improve this, it is required to understand the pattern of load usage according to the external information. Therefore, this paper suggests a methodology to model the load usage pattern, which classifies home appliances according to external information affecting the load usage and models the usage pattern for each appliance based on a copula function representing the correlation between variables. The modeled pattern would be reflected as a constraint condition for an optimal load usage scheduling problem in HEMS. To explain an application of the methodology, a case study is performed on an electrical water heater (EWH) and an optimal load usage scheduling for EHW is performed based on the branch-and-bound method. From the case study, it is shown that the load usage pattern can contribute to an efficient power consumption.
Voltage Control for a Wind Power Plant Based on the Available Reactive Current of a DFIG and Its Impacts on the Point of Interconnection

Wake effects cause wind turbine generators (WTGs) within a wind power plant (WPP) to produce different levels of active power and subsequent reactive power capabilities. Further, the impedance between a WTG and the point of interconnection (POI)-which depends on the distance between them-impacts the WPP`s reactive power injection capability at the POI. This paper proposes a voltage control scheme for a WPP based on the available reactive current of the doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) and its impacts on the POI to improve the reactive power injection capability of the WPP. In this paper, a design strategy for modifying the gain of DFIG controller is suggested and the comprehensive properties of these control gains are investigated. In the proposed scheme, the WPP controller, which operates in a voltage control mode, sends the command signal to the DFIGs based on the voltage difference at the POI. The DFIG controllers, which operate in a voltage control mode, employ a proportional controller with a limiter. The gain of the proportional controller is adjusted depending on the available reactive current of the DFIG and the series impedance between the DFIG and the POI. The performance of the proposed scheme is validated for various disturbances such as a reactive load connection and grid fault using an EMTP-RV simulator. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme promptly recovers the POI voltage by injecting more reactive power after a disturbance than the conventional scheme.
Research on a Development of Power System Analysis Software Considering User Convenience

Power system engineers use power systems solution programs such as PSS/E, DSATool, Power World simulators for power system analysis. In this reason, KEPCO has begun to develop independent power system program, KW-PSS(KEPCO World Power system Solution) since 2002 and KW-PSS ver2.0 development was completed in 2011. However, it did not have much better functions compared with other programs. Therefore, we focused on the development of the practical and specialized functions. Consequently, PAZ(Power system AnalyZer) ver3.0 has been developed and it realized a differentiation than previous version. In other words, previous version focused on the basic function of power system analysis, PAZ ver3.0 has implemented many automated functions for power system operators were driven maximize operational efficiency. The unique feature of the implementation is as follows : Automated check for exceeding the breaker capacity, Scheduled outage automation, Control-file wizard for various voltage stability analysis, Scenario-based multiple transient stability analysis and Auto calculation of transmission line impedance. As shown in these functions, Those functions provide to use power system analysis easily by automation and simplification for power system engineers. We will secure national expertise through PAZ ver3.0. In addition it will be able to gain competitive edge through the steady development in the world market.
A Case Study of Harmonic Resonance & Black Start in Weak Feed Power System

In order to recover the power system during the wide power outage or power failure in the power plant, black start system should be properly operated without any problem. Especially power for black start in the geographically isolated areas of electric island is supplied from small emergency start-up generator, and loads are aux systems of gas turbines such as SFC(Static frequency converter). This paper introduces the international practices to overcome the voltage drop problem with harmonics of the system having the DC output such as SFC during black start in weak feed system and analyzes the relationship between house load inputs and harmonics. By varying the house load and input of power supply, this paper identified boundaries between weak feed and strong feed power. In order to verify the theory of stable condition in weak feed power system with DC output, house load is simulated using ETAP. Additionally MATLAB was used for harmonic analysis between the load inertia moment and non load inertia moment.
Transient State Analysis of Faults Caused by Lightning Surge in Distribution Line

This paper presents the voltage characteristics of the various faults after lightning surge hits the overhead grounding wire close to the transformer`s secondary side. Based on the modeled distribution system, the cases of the various faults occurred by lightning surge are simulated using EMTP/ATPDraw and maximum overvoltage and RMS voltage according to the distances from the transformer are investigated. As a result, it is seen that the voltage characteristics of faults caused by lightning surge is different depending on the fault type and the voltage characteristics can be used to detect the fault type caused by lightning surge.
Rotor Shape Design of Single Phase LSPM for Improvement of Start-up Characteristics and Efficiency

In this paper, the design of rotor shape was performed for improvement of start-up characteristics and efficiency in single-phase LSPM. In order to improve the start-up characteristics, shape of rotor aluminium cage bar was changed. Through arrangement of permanent magnets and installation of flux barriers, it was performed torque ripple reduction and efficiency improvement. Cogging torque and back-EMF is calculated by the no-load analysis, start-up time is calculated by the start-up state analysis, efficiency and torque ripple is calculated by steady state analysis. The characteristics of the motor were calculated through FEM.

This paper presents the analysis of the analysis of thrust characteristics of linear induction motors(LIMs) according to secondary reaction plate. LIMs are well known as high speed transport systems, which can obtain thrust directly without gears and links, or auxiliary mechanisms. A simple structure, easy maintenance, and less environmental pollution are advantages of LIMs. In transport systems using LIMs, the secondary reaction plate is an important design factor, because it has considerable impact on the cost of the railway as well as the performance of the LIMs. This paper deals analyzed the characteristics of linear induction motor used for moving the vehicle of container scanner. Thrust, efficiency and load characteristic were interpreted with FEM regarding two models whose material of secondary reaction plate was copper and aluminum. It suggested the interpretation of thrust, efficiency and power factor characteristic along slip and compared the operation ability of linear induction motor through characteristics analysis along the load.
A Study on the Properties of the Dual-mode Plasma Torch System for Melting the Non-conductive Waste

The preliminary test for the dual mode plasma torch system was carried out to explore the operation properties in advance. The dual mode plasma torch system that is able to operate in transferred, non-transferred, or dual mode is very adequate for melting the mixed wastes including nonconductive materials such as concrete, asbestos, etc. since it exploits both the high efficiency of heat transfer to the melt in transferred mode and stable operation in non-transferred mode. Also, system operation including restarting is reliable and very easy. A stationary melter with a refractory structure was designed and manufactured considering the melting behavior of slags to minimize the refractory erosion. The power supply for the dual mode plasma torch system built with high power insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) modules has functions for both current control and voltage control and is sufficient to suppress the harmonics during the operation of the plasma torch. The power supply provides two different voltages for transferred operation and non-transferred. It is confirmed that the operation voltage in transferred is always higher than non-transferred. The dual mode plasma torch system was successfully developed and is under operation for a melting experiment to optimize operation data.
Analysis of A Fixed Frequency LCL-type DC-DC Converter Including the Effect of High-Frequency Transformer

An LCL-type Isolated dc-dc converter operating for constant output voltage is analyzed, including the effect of a high frequency transformer using ac complex circuit approximation. Its solution is derived and is used to obtain the characteristics of the proposed converter. The analyses show through converter modeling, phasor diagram and gain comparison that inclusion of a high frequency transformer results in introduction of magnetizing inductance and leakage inductances at conventional LCL dc-dc converter with ideal transformer. The theoretical and simulation results are presented in case of the wide variations in input voltage and load current in detail. Analysis and simulation results observed that introduction of a transformer in the dc-dc converter had considerable effect on the performance, especially in the case of low output voltage and large load.
Design and Implementation of an Optimal Hardware for a Stable Operating of Wide Bandgap Devices

In this paper, the GaN FET based phase-shift full-bridge dc-dc converter design is implemented. Switch characteristics of GaN FET were analyzed in detail by comparing state-of-the-art Si MOSFET. Owing to the low conduction resistance and parasitic capacitance, it is expected to GaN FET based power conversion system has improved performance. However, GaN FET is vulnerable to electric interference due to the relatively low threshold voltage and fast switching transient. Therefore, it is necessary to consider PCB layout to design GaN FET based power system because PCB layout is the main reason of stray inductance. To reduce the electric noise, gate voltage of GaN FET is analyzed according to operation mode of phase-shift full-bridge dc-dc converter. Two 600W phase-shifted full-bridge dc-dc converter are designed based on the result to evaluate effects of stray inductance.
Design and Implementation of a Bidirectional Power Supply Charger Using Super Capacitors and Solar Panel for Robot Cleaner Applications

In this paper, a bidirectional power supply charger is proposed. This system used a solar cell panel to generate electricity and used super capacitors to store these energies, which can be used for the robot cleaner or some other electronic products. This system include a phase-shift controlled bidirectional dual active bridge (DAB) converter, solar panel super capacitors and DSP controller. In the daytime it can charge to the super capacitors to store the energy generated by the solar cell panel and in the night it will release the energy stored in the super capacitors to loads. A prototype of the proposed bidirectional power supply charger system was designed which can achieve 18V to 30V input, 10V/20W output to super capacitors and 9V/6.5W output when it acts as a charger for the robot cleaner. The system is verified to be sTable and reliable by both the simulation and experimental results.
Soft Start-up Characteristics Analysis of Squirrel Cage Induction Generator

In general, the voltage stability of induction generator is lower than synchronous generator. Induction generator has a number of advantages over the synchronous generator on the side of price and maintenance. So Induction generator has been applied to the small hydroelectric power of low output. Induction generator usually generates a high current during grid connection. The high current that occurs during grid connection can cause a voltage drop in the system. In order to increase the supply of the induction generator, it is necessary to propose a method of reducing high current. This paper proposes some method of the soft start to reduce voltage drop caused by the large starting current. soft-start method has high voltage drop effect than direct start method, control of firing angle can be increased the voltage drop effect.
Implementation of the Real-time Measurement System of Receiver Sensitivity for a Laser Range Finder

We propose the method for measuring sensitivity of optical receiver of a long-range laser range finder in real-time. The sensitivity of the detector can be calculated using the detected voltage of the reference sensor, the area of the reference sensor and the transmittance ratio of neutral density filters. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we implemented a system and performed experiments. As a result, this system can be measured from 2nW to
. With this system, we measured the sensitivity of 37nW and 7nW with PIN PD and APD sample, respectively. This system has the advantage for the performance test of an optical sensor module in the long-range laser range finder.
A Scalp-Implantable Antenna for Wireless Biotelemetry

This paper demonstrates a scalp-implantable miniaturized antenna at the medical implant communication service (MICS) (402-405MHz) band. The antenna size is only
), which is the smallest antenna for the MICS band. Miniaturization is achieved by using a symmetrical serpentine shaped radiating patch and placing open-end slots in the ground plane. In addition, co-axial feeding is used for excitation with a shorting pin connected between the radiator and ground. The antenna was simulated in a homogeneous skin model and in the human scalp. An experimental prototype of the proposed antenna was fabricated and measured in a skin-mimicking gel. Good agreement was obtained between the measurement and simulation results, showing a broad bandwidth of 49 MHz (from 395 to 444 MHz) for |S11| less than -10 dB and a maximum gain of -42.87 dBi. This gain is higher than the previous MICS antenna with respect to antenna size.
Emotion Recognition Using Tone and Tempo Based on Voice for IoT

In Internet of things (IoT) area, researches on recognizing human emotion are increasing recently. Generally, multi-modal features like facial images, bio-signals and voice signals are used for the emotion recognition. Among the multi-modal features, voice signals are the most convenient for acquisition. This paper proposes an emotion recognition method using tone and tempo based on voice. For this, we make voice databases from broadcasting media contents. Emotion recognition tests are carried out by extracted tone and tempo features from the voice databases. The result shows noticeable improvement of accuracy in comparison to conventional methods using only pitch.
RF Spectrum Cognition Technologies for IoT Wireless Sensors

In this paper, new spectrum sensing schemes based on analog/RF front-end processing are introduced for IoT wireless sensor networks. While the conventional approaches for wireless channel cognition have been issued in signal processing area, the RF spectrum cognition concept makes it feasible to achieve cognitive wireless sensor networks (C-WSNs). The spectrum cognition at RF processing is categorized as four kinds of sensing mechanisms. Two recent reseaches are described as promising candidates for the C-WSN. One senses spectrum by the frequency discriminating receiver, the other senses and detects from the frequency selective super-regenerative receiver. The introduced systems with simple and low-power RF architectures play dual roles of channel sensing and demodulation. simultaneously. Therefore, introduced spectrum sensing receivers can be one of the best candidates for IoT wireless sensor devices in C-WSN environments.
A Study on the Security Threats of IoT Devices Exposed in Search Engine

IoT devices including smart devices are connected with internet, thus they have security threats everytime. Particularly, IoT devices are composed of low performance MCU and small-capacity memory because they are miniaturized, so they are likely to be exposed to various security threats like DoS attacks. In addition, in case of IoT devices installed for a remote place, it`s not easy for users to control continuously them and to install immediately security patch for them. For most of IoT devices connected directly with internet under user`s intention, devices exposed to outside by setting IoT gateway, and devices exposed to outside by the DMZ function or Port Forwarding function of router, specific protocol for IoT services was used and the devices show a response when services about related protocol are required from outside. From internet search engine for IoT devices, IP addresses are inspected on the basis of protocol mainly used for IoT devices and then IP addresses showing a response are maintained as database, so that users can utilize related information. Specially, IoT devices using HTTP and HTTPS protocol, which are used at usual web server, are easily searched at usual search engines like Google as well as search engine for the sole IoT devices. Ill-intentioned attackers get the IP addresses of vulnerable devices from search engine and try to attack the devices. The purpose of this study is to find the problems arisen when HTTP, HTTPS, CoAP, SOAP, and RestFUL protocols used for IoT devices are detected by search engine and are maintained as database, and to seek the solution for the problems. In particular, when the user ID and password of IoT devices set by manufacturing factory are still same or the already known vulnerabilities of IoT devices are not patched, the dangerousness of the IoT devices and its related solution were found in this study.
Collaborative Control Method of Underwater, Surface and Aerial Robots Based on Sensor Network

Recently, the needs for the development and application of marine robots are increasing as marine accidents occur frequently. However, it is very difficult to acquire the information by utilizing marine robots in the marine environment. Therefore, the needs for the researches of sensor networks which are composed of underwater, surface and aerial robots are increasing in order to acquire the information effectively as the information from heterogeneous robots has less limitation in terms of coverage and connectivity. Although various researches of the sensor network which is based on marine robots have been executed, all of the underwater, surface and aerial robots have not yet been considered in the sensor network. To solve this problem, a collaborative control method based on the acoustic information and image by the sonars of the underwater robot, the acoustic information by the sonar of the surface robot and the optical image by the camera of the static-floating aerial robot is proposed. To verify the performance of the proposed method, the collaborative control of a MUR(Micro Underwater Robot) with an OAS(Obstacle Avoidance Sonar) and a SSS(Side Scan Sonar), a MSR(Micro Surface Robot) with an OAS and a BMAR(Balloon-based Micro Aerial Robot) with a camera are executed. The test results show the possibility of real applications and the need for additional studies.
An Ensemble Classifier Based Method to Select Optimal Image Features for License Plate Recognition

This paper proposes a method to detect LP(License Plate) of vehicles in indoor and outdoor parking lots. In restricted environment, there are many conventional methods for detecting LP. But, it is difficult to detect LP in natural and complex scenes with background clutters because several patterns similar with text or LP always exist in complicated backgrounds. To verify the performance of LP text detection in natural images, we apply MB-LGP feature by combining with ensemble machine learning algorithm in purpose of selecting optimal features of small number in huge pool. The feature selection is performed by adaptive boosting algorithm that shows great performance in minimum false positive detection ratio and in computing time when combined with cascade approach. MSER is used to provide initial text regions of vehicle LP. Throughout the experiment using real images, the proposed method functions robustly extracting LP in natural scene as well as the controlled environment.
Development of a Control System for E-Bike Based on IOT

In this paper, a control system for E-bike based on IOT was developed, which collects and monitors information of states of E-bike and surrounding environments from several sensors and control devices in E-bike, and informs the possible dangers to rider when riding the E-bike. Developed electronic control system can manage battery efficiently, obtain battery`s remaining power in real-time and provide possible riding distance to rider. It makes possible for rider to schedule near optimal riding route in terms of battery usage and respond quickly to battery discharge. Results of applying developed system to E-bike show that according to driving-mode, possible driving distance can be calculated efficiently and using user application App, real-time driver position marking and driving route searching functions lead to energy efficient E-bike driving. Later we will endeavor to integrate BMS, ECU, smart-phone and PC(server) to provide stable driving system based on various driving information of E-bike.

That`s the reason why LED lighting has to employ AC power inlet. However, LED is a kind of diode, semiconductor, it`s driven by DC power. With whis reason all of LED lighting should have AC/DC converter in its systems. This converter causes energy loss, it`s the target for lesson the energy loss. To reduce this energy loss, DC power distribution structure can be used. LED lighting system using LVDC is a kind of DC power distribution structure, but LVDC has severe voltage drop which makes non-uniform brightness in lighting system. In this paper, we suggest a novel structure for the uniform brightness in LVDC LED lighting system using IoT based network system. The constructed test-bed system of suggested structure shows this structure can con control the brightness with uniformity.

Recently, IoT(Internet of Things) technology is widely applied in not only our everyday lives but also in industry, medical field and security system. NFC system, the basis of IoT, is in the spotlight which can be an alternative solution of a anti-theft system for motorcycle as they basically have practicality and security issues. Anti-theft system for motorcycle using the NFC smart devices based on RFID has been proposed. because Progress of Smart Device If someone get the Key for motorcycle theft, he can be easily stolen motorcycle. We thought about the concept of NFC security devices as a wireless key and automatic solenoid valve for setting the lock and unlock module. In this study, we designed motorcycle smart key system with general-purpose NFC system and the automatic solenoid valve for setting the lock and unlock module. First, we designed control unit and NFC card reader for motorcycle smart key system. Then we propose an AES encryption algorithm and prove that the motorcycle key system is controllable by showing the result of implementing and testing, after installing.
Adopting DITA Standard for Developing Technical Documentation Efficiently

In engineering industry, technical documentation refers to any type of documentation that describes handling, functionality and architecture of a technical product. The intended audiences for product technical documentation is the end user, the administrator, service or maintenance technician. Competition and rapid technological evolutions have created pressure to release new and improved products on an increasingly frequent basis. As the technical capabilities of products advance, the technical documentation for those products is becoming longer and complex. The Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) is and XML-based, end-to-end architecture for authoring, producing, and delivering technical documents. DITA is an OASIS standard that allows documentation groups to single-source document for multiple products and users, to automatically publish that documentation in several media formats including PDF and HTML, and to efficiently maintain and update that documentation. This paper study on the various implementation projects for technical documentation using OASIS DITA standard and examines the potential for using DITA as a solution for reconstructing existing technical documentation. Also We offer an incremental adoption approach to effectively implement DITA standard of technical documentation project for domestic firms, while reducing failures.
Power Signal Flicker Detection Based on Filter Bank Technique

In power quality monitoring, voltage fluctuation is one of the power quality problems, which cause light flickers. To determine the flicker severity, the flicker meter concept was developed in an IEC 61000-4-15 standard. Generally, voltage fluctuations are described as an amplitude modulation(AM). The flicker meter of IEC 61000-4-15 as an international standard for flicker measurement recommends square demodulation method to detect flicker signals from voltage fluctuation signals. This paper suggests a new effective method using filter bank to detect and estimate flicker signals, which do not need square demodulation. For the accurate detection of flicker signals, the filter bank is designed with a full consideration of the spectrum characteristics of voltage fluctuation signals described as AM. The frequency and magnitude of the detected flicker signals are estimated using recursive method. Computer simulations were performed on synthesized signals to prove validity of the proposed method.
Estimation of Hand Gestures Using EMG and Bioimpedance

EMG has specific information which is related to movements according to the activities of muscles. Therefore, users can intuitively control a prosthesis. For this reason, biosignals are very useful and convenient in this kind of application. Bioimpednace also provides specific information about movements like EMG. In this study, we used both EMG and bioimpedance to classify the typical hand gestures such as hand open, hand close, no motion (rest), supination, and pronation. Nine able-bodied subjects and one amputee were used as experimental data set. The accuracy was
when 2 bio-impedance and 8 EMG channels were used together for normal subjects. The number of EMG channels affected the accuracy, but it was stable when more than 5 channels were used. For the amputee, the accuracy is higher when we use both of them than when using only EMG. Therefore, accurate and stable hand motion estimation is possible by adding bioimepedance which shows structural information and EMG together.

Nowadays, it is a global trend to build refinery or chemical plants with an isolated system in a place distant from the center of a city. In the refinery or chemical plants equipped with an isolated system, induced motors mostly take the load, and the scale of high-voltage electric motors reaches from several kW up to several MW. Therefore, it is needed to examine the effects of electric motors on the power system closely in the stages of planning and designing a plant to build a stable power system. This study is aimed to investigate how to decide rated voltage in consideration of stability which has not been considered in the stages of planning and designing so far in order to secure stability for the power system.
Field Test of High-Speed Transponder System for Rail Transport

In order to detect the exact position of high-speed train, it is necessary to obtain location information from the transponder tag installed along the track. When the transponder tag receives the energizing signal from the train, it sends a telegram to the reader, which includes location information. In high-speed railway environment, this telegram can be corrupted by electromagnetic interference caused by onboard electric train power equipments or wayside devices. In order to assess the performance of transponder system under this harsh environment, we carried out field test using HEMU-430X. Field test results are briefly introduced and discussed for the evaluation of the transponder system under development.

The disassembled for automatic spring-tension capabilities ensure efficient operation and life expectancy of the adjustment device via a check by analyzing the changes in old age determine the remaining lifetime is expected to be available as a basis for maintenance in the future.

In this paper, adaptive home power peak-cut control system is developed using PLC. The developed scheme provides monitoring of power usage, power peak-cut control and additional function. In test bed, zone is presented by bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. And individual load is presented by lighting, heater and fan in zone. In developed scheme, zone control is implemented by single PLC modem. And individual load control is implemented by key-map table. In addition, power peak-cut control system S/W, which can perform setting of power peak, power peak-cut control and monitoring of power usage.

Electrical disasters have not been greatly reduced despite continuous prevention efforts until now. However, the smart distribution board which can be measured information about general electrical condition such as current, voltage, power, power factor etc. and electrical safety condition such as over-current, leakage current, arc etc. and communicated analysis information about electrical condition with server will be helpful for the prevention of electrical disasters through real-time surveillance and data analysis under smart grids based on the two-way communication. In this paper, the proposal standard of smart distribution board for electrical safety is suggested about the structure, functional requirements of compositions, communication, security and so on.
Protection Techniques Against Electric Shock in Low Voltage DC Grounding Systems Depending on the Analysis of Earth Fault Current Paths

This paper presents protection techniques against electric shock in low voltage DC(direct current) grounding systems depending on the analysis of earth fault current paths. Firstly, the comparison between alternating current and direct current on human was conducted, and current threshold values for each current path and for long duration were analyzed. Secondly, the analyses of the earth fault current flows were performed depending on the grounding types and earth fault conditions. Lastly, based on these analyses, adequate protection measures of electric shock depending on low voltage DC grounding types were provided.
