A Study on the strengthening of titania ceramic coating layer on the steel substrate

The purpose of this investigation is to examine the effects of the strengthening treatments on the mechanical properties of the flame-sprayed titania ceramic coating layer. The strengthening treatments for flame sprayed specimens were carried out in 12 different conditions in vaccum furance. The mechanical properties such as microhardness, thermal shock resistance, adhesive strength and erosion resistance were tested for the sprayed specimens after strengthening treatments. And it was clear that the mechanical properties of coating layer were much improved by the strengthening treatments. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. It was shown that the metallurgical bond was formed between substrate and coating layer by the strengthening treatments and that thermal shock resistance and adhesive strength were remarkably raised. 2. Microhardness of coating lay was considerably increased by the strengthening treatments. 3. Erosion resistance and porosity of coating layer were slightly improved by the strengthening treatments.
A Study on the Development of Arc Sensor for Flux Cored Arc Welding Process and its Application for Seam Tracking

Among the variety of welding processes available, the flux cored arc welding is one of the most frequently used process, because of its wide range of application and high productivity. The weld joint tracking is indispensable to improve the flexibility of the arc welding robot application for the flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process. In this study, an arc sensor which utilizes the electrical signal obtained from the welding arc itself was developed for weld joint tracking in FCAW. Because a model of the welding arc in flux cored arc welding was required to develop the arc sensor, a mathematical model was proposed by analysing the welding arc behaviour, and also an experimental model by using the factorial experiment and least square method. For overcoming the fluctuation in the welding current signal during tracking the weld joint, it was fitted to a curve which is inversely proportional to a trace of tip-to-workpiece distance by using the quadratic curve-fitting method.
A Study on Development of Expert System for Dimension and Weld Designs of Horizontal-Type Pressure Vessel

Expert system is a practical application part of the artificial intelligence and can be generally described as a computer-based system designed to simulate the knowledge and reasoning of a human expert, and to make that knowledge conveniently available to other people in a useful way. Expert systems consist of three major components, knowledge base, inference engine and user interface. In this paper, it is aimed to construct a prototype system to design the horizontal-typed pressure vessel. To do this, a representative artificial programming language, Turbo Prolog, was employed, and the knowledge representation was mainly done by the production rule such as "If(condition), than (action)" style and by the predicate logic. In the developed system, it was quite easy to represent the knowledge of "If(condition), then (action)"style and by the predicate logic. Infiltration of the Cu-Ti Alloys to Porous

ceramic coating layer by gas flame spraying was very porous, therefore it could not have wear and corrosion resistance at all. To get a dense and strong coating layer, a method to infiltrate an alloy into the pores of
ceramic coating was investigated. Cu-Ti alloys, which had good wettability and reactivity with
ceramic, were examined for infiltration. Infiltration of the alloys was performed in vacuum at 1100.deg.C. The melt of Cu-50 at % Ti alloy was well penetrated through the porous
coating and tightly sealed the pores, unbounded area and microcracks in the coating. The alloy melt in the pores reacted with
ceramic to produce a suboxide phase, Cu
O. This composite layer which was composed of
O phase had good microstructure and wear and corrosion resistance. Additionally, microstructures at interfaces between coating layers were greatly improved owing to the effect of vacuum heat treating.
Prediction of Penetration and Heat Affected Zone by Using Finite Element Method in

A prediction of penetration and heat affected zone by using Finite Element Method in CO
Arc Welding has been discussed this paper. The temperature distribution of a base metal produced by the CO
arc welding processing is analyzed by using a three dimensional finite element model. The common finite element program ANSYS 4.4A was employed to obtain the numerical results. Temperature dependent material properties, effect of latent heat, and the convective boundary conditions are included in the model. Numerically predicted sizes of the penetration and the heat affected zone are compared with the experimentally observed values. As a result, there was a slight difference between numerical analysis values and experimentally observed values. For in the case of heat affected zone, it was not considered a precise forced convective coefficient value, and in the case of penetration, it was not, considered a arc force.
A Study on the Rupture and Crack Propagation Dharacteristics in the Material Friction-Welded with Hetrogeneous Steels of SM40C and STS304

The specimens of two base metals and material friction-welded with hetrogeneous steels of SM40C and STS304 have been prepared and the characteristics of rupture and crack propagation of them have been examined. In the friction-welded material, the width of HAZ is 3.0mm for STS304 and 3.4mm for SM40C. The hardness distribution in HAZ of SM40C is decreased gradually as being getting off interface, but that in HAZ of STS304 is decreased remarkedly and the value of hardness becomes a little lower than that of the base metal in region of 1mm from interface and becomes a little higher than that of the base metal. The tensile strength of the friction-welded material appeared a little lower than that of the base metal and rupture by tensile load is developed in HAZ of STS304 and the position of rupture is at region of low hardness(1mm from interface). The crack propagation rates(da/dN) in both HAZ of the friction-welded material are a little higher than those in both base metals, but the difference are less except for the case of SM45C in low .DELTA. K value. It has been ascertained that the crack in the interface propagates selectively along the HAZ of SM40C and consequently the crack propagation rate is almost similar to that in the HAZ of SM40C.
A Study on the Characteristics of Zr-4 End Cap Welded Joints Using Resistance Upset Welding

The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics of welded joints on the Zircaloy-4 resistance upset welding for HWR(Heavy Water reactor)fuel rods. To estimate the characteristics of welded joints, the various tests were performed on the test coupons systematically with a wide range of each welding parameters in terms of a tensile test, burst test, knoop hardness test and metallography. Major results obtained in this study are as follows: 1. The tube and machined with 120.deg. projection was the reliable weld joint design for the nuclear fuel rod end cap welding. 2. As the weld current and the amount of upset increased linearly with increasing welding main heat input, it could make an estimate of their variation in accordance with the phase shift control. 3. It was found that an increase in squeeze force has an effect on the upset contour of welded joint because the amount of upset were increased by the change of squeeze force.
Study on the Mechanical Behavior of Welded part in thick Plate

In order to clarify the mechanical behavior of welding crack and to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of welded parts in thick plate, it is very important to accurately predict the welding deformation and residual stress including transient state before welding. In this paper, the theory of a three-dimensional elasto-plastic problem for the analysis of mechanical phenomenon of welding joint on the plate is developed into an efficient and accurate method based on the finite element method, and then several examples are considered by using the proposed model. The results of numerical analyses are discussed in the viewpoint of the mechanical characteristics of the distribution of three-dimensional welding residual stresses, plastic strains and their production mechanism on the thick plate.
A Study on the fatigue strength analysis of the welded joints in ship hull construction

In this report, a method to predict the fatigue strength in welded structure member of ship construction is studied considering the effects of statistical characteristics of mild steels and weld toe shapes on the fatigue crack initiation life. The fatigue test under pulsating bending load is carried out with the model specimens of the web frame in double bottom of ship hull. The propriety of the fatigue life curve with probability of failure in the transverse strength members of ship hull construction is confirmed by the comparison with the results of fatigue test on the model of the various transverse strength members.
