Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 5~12
We measured emission characteristics of CRDI diesel engine equipped with a commercial CPF. Experimental parameters adopted a neat diesel fuel, a blend of diesel fuel with 20% biodiesel, a blend of diesel fuel with 15% biodiesel and 5% ethanol. The experiments were carried out to measure the emission and engine performance according to ESC 13-mode cycles. The maximum torque with biodiesel blend fuel is slightly lower than that of neat diesel fuel in the entire the 13-mode cycles, and 5% ethanol and 15% biodiesel blend fuel is slightly higher than that of neat diesel fuel. THC and CO emissions of the biofuel blended diesel fuel were slightly increased and decreased, and mean conversion efficiencies of THC and CO on the commercial CPF were achieved about 70
87% in the ESC 13-mode. From the measurement by the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer(SMPS), the total number and mass of nano-sized particles by a commercial CPF were decreased about 97.8% and 96.8 % in the range of the nano-size from 10.6 to 385nm, respectively.

Kang, H.Y. ; Koh, D.K. ;
Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 13~19
In this study, a variable induction and exhaust system is applied to turbocharged diesel engine to improve the volumetric efficiency, especially, in a low and transient engine speed range where much of the pollutant matters are expelled out. The volumetric efficiency is known as one of the most important factor which affects significantly engine performance, fuel economy and further emission and noise level. As the torque increase with the engine speed up, the gas flow in an exhaust pipe become pulsating and then has an effect on boost up capacity of air charging into the cylinder and expelling capacity to atmosphere simultaneously. But at a low and idling speed, the pulsation effect was not so significant. Accordingly, resonator was employed to compensate their loss. The variable induction system consists of the secondary pipe, resonator, intercooler, and torque variance were examined with extended operating conditions. In the mean time, for interpretation and well understanding for the phenomena of wave action that arising during intake and exhaust process between turbocharger and variable intake system, the concept of the combined supercharging was introduced. Some of results are depicted which deal with a pressure history during valve events of induction process. Consequently, by the governing of these phase and amplitude of pulsating wave, it enables us to estimate and evaluate for the intake system performance and also, designing stage of the system layout.

Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 35~40
This paper presents an effective cooling dehumidification method to remove odorous gas from food-wastes. The odorous gases, such as Styrene, Ammonia, Hydrogen sulfide and Acetaldehyde, are produced in environments where temperature is
and humidity is
. Under such conditions, experiments are performed reiteratively using experiment equipments. The effect of the cooling dehumidification is measured via measuring instrument, and this research is focused on improving efficiency. The effect of cooling dehumidification using measuring instrument is validated. At
, four type of gases that was mentioned previously showed generally better cooling efficiency with a good result for a component concentration. Among them, hydrogen sulfide gas demonstrated the highest reduction of 50%.

Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 41~46
The primary objective of this study is to truly understand exciting forces of the in-line 4 cylinders engine. Exciting forces of the engine apply a source of the vehicle NVH(Noise, Vibration, Harshness). To understand exciting forces, first was governed theoretical equations for single cylinder engine. And this theoretical equations was programming using MATLAB software. To compare theoretical analysis value, was applied MSC.ADAMS software. To determined the specification of engine(2,000cc, in-line 4) was applied ADAMS/Engine module. And this specification for engine was applied ADAMS/View and MATLAB software. The geometry model for ADAMS/View analysis was produced by the 3-D design modeling software. After imported 3-D model, each rigid body was jointed suitable. Under idle speed for engine, was analysed. The results of analysis are fairly well agreed with those of three analysis method. Using MATLAB software proposed in this study, engine exciting fores can be predicted. Also using ADAMS/Engine module and ADAMS/View software, engine exciting forces can be predicted.

Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 47~52
This study was investigated the effect of subzero treatment in austempered ductile cast iron. Retained austenite transformed to martensite by subzero treatment and strain. With decreasing subzero treatment temperature and increasing strain, retained austenite transformed more to martensite and transformed 30% above by subzero treatment at
. With decreasing subzero treatment temperature, the value of strength and ratio of increasing of strength, hardness and ratio of increasing of hardness increased but the value of elongation and ratio of decreasing of elongation decreased. With decreasing subzero treatment temperature, impact value and ratio of decreasing of impact value decreased. In case of subzero treatment at
, hardness value increased about 18% and impact value decreased above 20%. We could find that in subzero treated specimens had a little of effect on the tensile properties but had very much effect on the hardness and value of the impact.

Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 53~57
The automotive industry faces many competitive challenges including weight and cost reduction to meet need for higher fuel economy. It is a trend that a lot of parts have been currently changed to an aluminum alloy from steel materials. It is required more precise analysis for practical load because of complexities and varieties of vehicle structure. In this study, the shape optimization using a FEA is performed to determine the design of the knuckle. The size optimization is carried out to find thickness while the stiffness constraints are satisfied. A commercial optimization software MSC/NASTRAN is utilized for the structural analysis and the optimization processes.
Application of Thin-Walled Tubes Using Guided Wave
Park, S.K. ; Lee, Y.H. ;
Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 58~65
A method to test thin-walled tubes by guided ultrasonic wave is reported. The principle is that applicate two types of axially symmetric ultrasonic tube modes and "longitudinal" modes with particle displacement, which is coupled in axial and radial directions for transverse failures and torsional modes, oscillating in the circumferential direction only, for longitudinal failures. Both types of modes propagate along the tube in the axial direction. Therefore, a pulse-echo technique is possible. The pulses are excited and received at one end of the tube without contact electro-dynamic transducers. As soon as the tubes is put into a transducer coil at one end, the test of the whole tube can be accomplished in a few milliseconds. It is not necessary to rotate and transport the tubes during the test.

Hwang, I.C. ; Park, C.J. ;
Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 72~79
This paper designs a looper-tension controller for mass-flow stabilization in hot strip finishing mills. By Newton's 2nd law and Hooke's law, nonlinear dynamic equations on the looper-tension system are firstly derived, and linearized by a linearization algorithm using a Taylor's series expansion. Moreover, a tension calculation model is obtained from the nonlinear dynamic equations which is called as a soft sensor of strip tension between two neighboring stands. Next, a looper-tension servo controller is designed by an ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) algorithm, and it is combined with a minimal disturbance observer which to attenuate speed disturbances by AGC and operator interventions, etc.. Finally, it is shown from by a computer simulation that the proposed ILQ controller with a disturbance observer is very effective in stabilizing the strip mass-flow under some disturbances, moreover it has a good command following performance.
A Study on the Position Control of a Motor Cylinder with Nonlineal Friction
Byun, J.H. ;
Journal of the Korea Society For Power System Engineering, volume 12, issue 1, 2008, Pages 80~86
A motor cylinder apparatus is used to transfer a load in industrial applications. The apparatus is composed of a motor and power transmission elements such as worm gear and screw. In this case, the nonlinear friction of the transmission elements has a bad influence on the position control performance. To overcome this problem, the position control system consists of a feedback controller to achieve nominal control performance and a disturbance observer to compensate nonlinear friction. Especially the filter of a disturbance observer is designed from viewpoint of robust stability. Finally, the simulation result shows that the proposed control system is effective for the disturbance elimination as well as the friction compensation.
