The Proposal for Reliability Improvement of Emergency Diesel Engines through the Evaluation of the Maintenance Program and Overseas Cases for their Applications

The failure frequency of the Emergency Diesel Generator(EDG) at Nuclear Power Plants(NPPs) is not so much lower than that of the Marine engines, whereas the running hours of the diesel engine at NPPs is much less than those of the engines for commercial service. The primary factor results from the severe surveillance test requirements such as fast start, large number of starting test, fast load-run, high load running, etc. The other factor comes from the excessive maintenance based on the engine maker's instruction manual that did not incorporate the peculiar characteristics of the diesel engines at NPPs. In this paper, the present preventive maintenance program on the basis of the Pielstick diesel engines was reviewed for the purpose of securing the reliability of the emergency diesel generator at NPPs and the ways for its improvement were presented by referring to the overseas cases for their applications.
A Study on the Evaluation of Welding Residual Stress of Pipe used in Power Plant by Indentation Method

In this study, to verify the reliability of the indentation for measuring welding residual stresses to get in method we compared the results of the method with those measured by the saw cutting method. Also for the same purpose we used a 4-point bending test and confirmed the reliability of indentation method. The specimens used in this experiment are made with the same conditions for hot reheater pipes and cold reheater pipes used in the electric power plant. Therefore we could know that the results of the methods showed the reliability of the method to obtain welding residual stresses.
Analysis of Combustion Characteristics of Bio Diesel Fuel in a DI Diesel Engine Using PXI and LabVIEW

Recently many researchers have been studying the development of alternative energy due to serious environmental pollution and drying up fossil energy. Among various alternative fuels, authors investigated the physical and combustion characteristics of the bio diesel fuel(BDF) which was made from the wasted vegetable oil. In this study, PXI and LabVIEW, which is a novel measuring instrument and online analysis, was used to investigate the combustion characteristics of BDF in a DI diesel engine.
Analysis on the Temperature Distribution for the Billet in a Furnace

In this paper, the optimal heating pattern of the furnace is sought to reduce the unnecessary energy loss. A finite difference method was used to estimate the transient temperature field of the billet in a furnace. Heat conduction equations were used in the interior nodes of the billet, while energy balances for conduction, convection, and radiation were considered in the boundary nodes. Several heating patterns for the furnace were tested and subsequently compared each other. The results showed that the temperature in the preheating zone should be set to relatively low. The temperature distributions of the billet are quite different from each other when different heating pattern are used, even though the heating patterns have the same amount of energy consumption. It reveals that there exists an optimal heating pattern to save the energy loss.
A Study on the Development of Dust Collection System for Hull Repair

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of hybrid collection system combined with centrifugal force of cyclone and filtration of bag filter in one unit system. The experiment and numerical simulation are executed for the analysis of collection efficiency and pressure drop characteristics of hybrid system in comparison with those of a general fabric bag filter with the various experimental parameters such as inlet velocity(filtration velocity), dust concentration and dust type, etc.. In present system, dust particles tangentially coming into the system body are controlled by the centrifugal force effect, and the next collection is made out by the filtration mechanism in the fabric filter media. Therefore, the effective first collection causes the decrease of dust loading on the fabric filter, and it presents quite a lower pressure drop of fabric filter than that of a general fabric filter. The Effects of the STS 304 Hollow Cylinder Property Variations on the Non-Steady Heat Conduction

The effects of the STS 304 hollow cylinder property variations on the non-steady heat conduction are considered in this paper. In the non steady state, the specific heat and conductivity are depended on the temperature variations, and these properties affect to the governing equation on heat conduction. But the most of numerical analysis on heat conduction is assumed to constant properties which is conductivity and specific heat. Assuming that the properties are reacted sensitively, the numerical results can have the difference of between constant properties with non constant properties. The main parameters are specific heat and conductivity. The temperature distributions of the STS 304 hollow cylinder became in steady state after 4 minutes in case of the constant properties. As the conductivity is varied with temperature, the temperature distributions became in steady state after 15 minutes. Therefore, a numerical analysis of the non steady state heat transfer is so important in case of varying temperature.
Optimum Design of Journal Bearings Using Simulated Annealing Method

This paper describes the optimum design for journal bearings by using simulated annealing method. Simulated annealing algorithm is an optimization technique to calculate global and local optimum solutions. Dynamic characteristics of the journal bearing are calculated by using finite difference method (FDM), and these values are used for the procedure of journal bearing optimization. The objective is to minimize the resonance response (Q factor) of the simple rotor system supported by the journal bearings. Bearing clearance and length to diameter ratio are used as the design variables.
Control Performance for Semi-active Mount Featuring Magneto-Rheological Fluid

In this paper, the semi active mount featuring Magneto rheological fluid(MR Fluid) is proposed. MR fluid is suspension of micro sized magnetizable particles in a fluid medium, and its apparent viscosity can be varied by the applied strength of magnetic field. When the controllable MR fluid is applied to mechanical devices, the devices provide simple, rapid response interfaces between electronic controls and mechanical systems. The MR fluid is applied in the conventional fluid mount for improving its performance of the mount's isolation effect. A appropriate size of the MR mount is designed and manufactured on the basis of Bingham model of MR fluid. In addition, the field dependent damping forces of MR mount are evaluated with respect to the input frequency variation.
