An Analysis on secondary school students` problem-solving ability and problem-solving process through algebraic reasoning

The purpose of this study is to suggest how to go about teaching and learning secondary school algebra by analyzing problem-solving ability and problem-solving process through algebraic reasoning. In doing this, 393 students` data were thoroughly analyzed after setting up the exam questions and analytic standards. As with the test conducted with technical school students, the students scored low achievement in the algebraic reasoning test and even worse the majority tried to answer the questions by substituting arbitrary numbers. The students with high problem-solving abilities tended to utilize conceptual strategies as well as procedural strategies, whereas those with low problem-solving abilities were more keen on utilizing procedural strategies. All the subject groups mentioned above frequently utilized equations in solving the questions, and when that utilization failed they were left with the unanswered questions. When solving algebraic reasoning questions, students need to be guided to utilize both strategies based on the questions.
A study on the conversion of the formula for the area of a trapezoid

Formula for the area of a trapezoid is an educational material that can handle algebraic and geometric perspectives simultaneously. In this note, we will make up the expression equivalent algebraically to the formula for the area of a trapezoid, and deal with the conversion of a geometric point of view, in algebraic terms of translating and interpreting the expression geometrically. As a result, the geometric conversion model, the first algebraic model, the second algebraic model are obtained. Therefore, this problem is a good material to understand the advantages and disadvantages of the algebraic and geometric perspectives and to improve the mathematical insight through complementary activity. In addition, these activities can be used as material for enrichment and gifted education, because it helps cultivate a rich perspective on diverse and creative thinking and mathematical concepts.
A Study on Character Education in Mathematics Subject

Character means a person`s nature and the mind and behavior to lead a desirable life personally and socially. Also character can be changed with education and environment. Therefore character education will be possible to do practice through various educational activities and life experiences in school. In other words, we think that students will get person`s character required to lead a desirable life personally and socially beyond what they just learn knowledge and skill, enter the higher schools and succeed one`s way. This study accepts merits of existing character education policy through subject(mathematics) education and focus on direction for character education through subject(mathematics) education for systematic and synthetic approach for practice of character education. For this, we will see applicability of the plan for character education in the whole subject education, in particular focusing on cases of character education in mathematics subject.
A Study on the Understanding in Results of Arithmetic Operation

The arithmetic operation have double-sided character. One is calculation as a process, the other is understanding in results as an outcome of the operation. We harbored suspicion on students` misunderstanding in an outcome of the operation, because the curriculum has focused on the calculation, as a process of arithmetic operation. This study starts with the presentation of this problem, we tried to find the recognition ability and character in the arithmetic operation. We researched the recognition ability for 7th grade 27 students who have enough experience in arithmetic operation when studying in elementary school. And we had an interview with 3students individually, that has an error in understanding in results of arithmetic operation but has no error in calculation. We focused on 3students` detailed appearance of the ability to understand in results of arithmetic operation and analysed the changing appearance after recommending unit record using operation expression. As a result, we could find the abily to underatanding in results of arithmetic operation and applicability to recommend unit record using operation expression. Through these results, we suggested educational implications in understanding in results of arithmetic operation.
Research on Environmental Factors that Affect Mathematics Learning of Students in Multicultural Families

The purpose of this study is to investigate environmental factors that affect mathematics learning of students in multicultural families. For this study, as study subjects, eight elementary school students and one middle school student, who were born and grew up in multicultural families in Korea due to international marriage of Korean father and foreign mother, and their five mothers were selected. To examine factors affecting mathematics learning and interests of students in multicultural families, relationships with parents, friends, and teachers were surveyed, and mathematics attitude test was performed. After conducting one on one interview based on collected questionnaires and results of the attitude test, qualitative data analysis was performed. As a result of survey and interview, positive factors affecting mathematics learning of students in multicultural families included arousing interest in mathematics through mother`s mathematics teaching in her mother language and direct teaching, good peer relation, teacher`s compliment and encouragement, and lowering the burden of language in accordance with characteristics of mathematics course.
A Survey on 2009 Revised Elementary Mathematics Textbooks -focusing to `number and operation` of 3~4th grades-

The purpose of this study is to provide an opportunity for better understanding and application of 2009 revised elementary school mathematics textbooks through survey data and focus group interview on structures of textbooks. First, We collect online survey results which 2333 elementary school teachers participated. Next, We interview focus group(8 teachers) about shapes of textbooks, quantity of learning contents, activities and problems for evaluation in the mathematics lessons. Storytelling is especially issued in the 2009 revised mathematics curriculum. We intensively discuss learning and teaching methods with application of storytelling textbooks; interests of students, role of storytelling textbooks etc. As results of analysis, the positive rate to use the 2009 revised textbooks is relatively high about shapes and activities of textbooks. But there is more considered about storytelling method. Storytelling may be positive on improvement of learning interests and participation of students. In order to develop these advantages, studies in relation of storytelling are more proceeded and teaching materials for teachers are required effectively in order to applicate to the elementary school.
