Investigation on the Recent Research Trend in the Corrosion Behaviour of Stainless Steel Weldment

The research trend in the corrosion behaviour of stainless steel weldment has been reviewed. The welding technology plays an important role in the fabrication of structure such as chemical plant, power plant, because welding can influence various factors in the performance of plant and equipment. This has led to an increasing attention towards the corrosion behaviour of weldment which has been one of the major issues for both welding and corrosion research engineers. The aim of this paper is to give a short survey of the recent technical trends of welding and corrosion including the electrochemical corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, and corrosion fatigue in connection with the welding materials, welding process, and welding fabrication. This study covers the corrosion behaviour of stainless steel weldment collected from the COMPENDEX DB analysis of published papers, research subject and research institutes.
Effects of Weld Fume on the Corrosion Protection of Epoxy Coated on Carbon Steel

Welding was widely used in shipbuilding industries as a joining method. In present study, the effects of welding fume contaminated on steel surface on corrosion protection were examined by water ballast simulation test and condensation chamber test. Pull-off adhesion test, blistering test and cathodic disbondment test were carried out to evaluate the effects of residual welding fume. Consequently, it was clearly indicated that the residual welding fume didn't affect the corrosion protection of epoxy coated on steel when surface was treated by light sweep blasting to heavy sweep blasting which was applied in this study.
Monitoring of Atmospheric Corrosivity inside Steel Upper Box Girder in Yeongjong Grand Bridge

The typical corrosion prevention method inside the steel upper box girder in a suspension bridge involves the use of paints. However, in an effort to reduce environmental impact and cost, the suspension portion of the Yeongjong Bridge, Korea utilizes dehumidification systems to control humidity and prevent corrosion inside its box girder. Maintaining a uniform humidity distribution at the proper level inside the box girder is critical to the successful corrosion control. In this study, the humidity and the resultant atmospheric corrosivity inside the box girder of the Yeongjong Bridge was monitored. The corrosion rate of the steel inside the box girder was obtained using thin-film electrical resistance (TFER) corrosion sensors. Time-of-wetness (TOW) measurements and the deposition rates of atmospheric pollutants such as
were also obtained. Classification of the atmospheric corrosivity inside the box girder was evaluated according to ISO 9223. As a result, no corrosion was found in the upper box girder, indicating that the dehumidification system used in the Yeongjong Bridge is an effective corrosion control method.
Evaluation of Corrosion Protection for Epoxy and Urethane Coating by EIS under Various Cyclic Corrosion Tests

Protective coatings play an important role in the protection of metallic structures against corrosive environment. The main function of anticorrosive coating is to prevent the materials from corrosive agents, such as water, oxygen and ions. In the study, the corrosion protection properties of urethane and epoxy coating systems were evaluated using EIS methods exposed to the corrosion acceleration test such as Norsok M501, Prohesion and hygrothermal cyclic test. AFM analysis of the coating systems was carried out to monitor the change of roughness of coatings. Urethane coating system was more stable than the epoxy coating under given cyclic conditions. Water uptake into the urethane coatings was less than that into the epoxy coating. The urethane coating system showed better corrosion protection than epoxy coating system based on the changes of the impedance modulus at low frequency region with exposure time. Consequently, the corrosion protection properties of the epoxy and urethane coatings was well correspond with their surface roughness changes and water uptakes.
Investigation on electrochemical and cavitation characteristics of rudder materials for ship in sea water

Marine ships have played an important role as a carrier, transporting much more than 80% of all international trading, and marine transportation is an internationally competitive, strategic, and great national important industry. However, those marine ships have the characteristics such as voyage of long distance, large-volume and lower speed than the other carry system. Therefore, it is important to manufacture a larger and faster ship, however, the steel plates which are consisted with most of those ships has brought about many corrosion problems in sea water such as general corrosion, localized corrosion, cavitation and erosion corrosion etc.. Most hulls of the ships have been protected with paintings, sacrificial anode, marine growth prevention system, and impressed current cathodic protection methods against numerious corrosion problems mentioned above. However, these conventional methods are not very effective because the rudder of ships stern are exposed to very severe corrosive environment such as tides, speeds of ships, cavitations and erosion corrosion, etc.. In this study, electrochemical and cavitation characteristics was investigated for the rudder material of ship which is exposed to serious corrosive environment. As a result, it is considered that the optimum cathodic protection potentials of rudder material is the range of -0.6 V ~ -0.8 V(Ag/AgCl) in static seawater.
