Error Performance of Spatial-temporal Combining-based Spatial Multiplexing UWB Systems Using Transmit Antenna Selection

This paper applies transmit antenna selection algorithms to spatial-temporal combining-based spatial multiplexing (SM) ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. The employed criterion is based on the largest minimum output signal-to-noise ratio of the multiplexed streams. It is shown via simulations that the bit error rate (BER) performance of the SM UWB systems based on the two-dimensional Rake receiver is significantly improved by antenna diversity through transmit antenna selection on a log-normal multipath fading channel. When the transmit antenna diversity through antenna selection is exploited in the SM UWB systems, the BER performance of the spatial-temporal combining-based zero-forcing (ZF) receiver is also compared with that of the ZF detector followed by the Rake receiver.
Experimental Demonstration of 4×4 MIMO Wireless Visible Light Communication Using a Commercial CCD Image Sensor

We report an experimental demonstration of
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless visible light communications (VLC) using a charge-coupled device image sensor receiver instead of a photodiode receiver. An image sensor is a kind of digital camera, which is used in most mobile devices such as smart phones or laptop computers and a promising commercial candidate for a VLC receiver. The transmission distance of the experimental result is over 10 m, enough for most indoor communication applications. We expect that the MIMO VLC technique based on image sensor receivers can be widely used with the development of high-speed image sensors.
Measurement and Analysis of the Korean NDGPS Radiation Spectrum

The Korean nationwide differential global positioning system (NDGPS) reference station transmits a global positioning system (GPS) enhancement signal using minimum shift keying modulation with a 200 bps data rate. The ocean-based DGPS covers the service area of 100 NM with 300 W output power; on the other hand, the land-based DGPS transmits the output power of 500 W, which covers the service area of 100 km. The DGPS reference stations with high output power can radiate spurious signals, which may act as interference sources affecting the other DGPS reference stations or the wireless ground stations that utilize the medium frequency band. In this paper, the radiation spectrums of the DGPS reference stations are measured and analyzed in the spurious domain. The DGPS radiation spectrums are evaluated from the perspective of the interference effect.
Extension of ReInForM Protocol for (m,k)-firm Real-time Streams in Wireless Sensor Networks

For real-time wireless sensor network applications, it is essential to provide different levels of quality of service (QoS) such as reliability, low latency, and fault-tolerant traffic control. To meet these requirements, an (m,k)-firm based real-time routing protocol has been proposed in our prior work, including a novel local transmission status indicator called local DBP (L_DBP). In this paper, a fault recovery scheme for (m,k)-firm real-time streams is proposed to improve the performance of our prior work, by contributing a delay-aware forwarding candidates selection algorithm for providing restricted redundancy of packets on multipath with bounded delay in case of transmission failure. Each node can utilize the evaluated stream DBP (G_DBP) and L_DBP values as well as the deadline information of packets to dynamically define the forwarding candidate set. Simulation results show that for real-time service, it is possible to achieve both reliability and timeliness in the fault recovery process, which consequently avoids dynamic failure and guarantees meeting the end-to-end QoS requirement.
An Error Recovery Mechanism for Wireless Sensor Networks

In wireless sensor networks, the importance of transporting data correctly with reliability is increasing gradually along with the need to support communications between the nodes and sink. Data flow from the sink to the nodes requires reliability for control or management that is very sensitive and intolerant of error; however, data flow from the nodes to the sink is relatively tolerant. In this paper, with emphasis on the data flow from the sink to the nodes, we propose a mechanism that considers accurate transport with reliability hop-by-hop. During the process of sending the data, if errors occur or data is missing, the proposed mechanism supports error recovery using a fixed window with selective acknowledgment. In addition, this mechanism supports congestion control depending on the buffer condition. Through the simulation, we show that this mechanism is accurate, reliable, and proper for transport in wireless sensor networks.

In the determination of suitable frame sizes associated with dynamic framed slotted Aloha used in radio frequency identification tag identification processes, the widely imposed constraint
often yields inappropriate values deviating far from the optimal values, while a straightforward use of the estimated optimal frame sizes causes frequent restarts of read procedures, both resulting in long identification delays. Taking a trade-off, in this paper, we propose a new method for determining effective frame sizes where the effective frame size changes in a multiple of a predetermined step size, namely

Network and Data Link Layer Security for DASH7

The sensor network standard DASH7 was proposed to improve transmission quality and low power communication. Specifications for the standard are currently being developed, so the security specification has not been firmly implemented. However, without a security specification, a network cannot work due to threats from malicious users. Thus we must ensure confidentiality and authentication of data packets by using a cryptography method. To contribute to the DASH7 security specification, this paper shows the implementation results of network and data link layer security by using advanced encryption standard (AES) counter with CBC-MAC (CCM) over CC430 sensor nodes.
Always Metastable State True Random Number Generator

This paper presents an efficient filtering system for a metastable state-based true random number generator. To output a result with high randomness, we use loop-storage for storing the value of metastability. During the metastable state, the output value is accumulated to the storage. When the non-metastable state arises, the stored metastable value will be used for output instead of the result of the non-metastable state. As a result, we can maintain high entropy together with the original throughput.
XML-based EDI Document Processing System with Binary Format Mapping Rules

Recently, the magnitude of electronic data interchange (EDI) document processing for the handling of port logistics is abruptly being increased. The existing system processes EDI documents in a script mode, but due to a complicated script preparation procedure and low document processing efficiency, it cannot meet the demand as the usage flow of documents increases. In this paper, an EDI electronic document processing system was designed and implemented in a document scanner and mapper, which are binary form electronic document processing tools and do not require script files during the conversion of extensible markup language (XML)-based electronic documents. This new system has the merits of XML features during reading and writing with improved speed, usage convenience, and good portability on systems when compared to the conventional ones.
On the Performance Evaluation of Energy-Aware Sleep Scheduling (EASS) in Energy Harvesting WSN (EH-WSN)

Tree-based structures offer assured optimal paths from the data source to the sink. Shortest routes are disregarded since these do not consider the remaining energy level of the nodes. This shortens the lifetime of the whole network. Most tree-based routing protocols, although aware of the nodes' energy, do not consider an energy aware sleep scheduling scheme. We propose an energy-aware sleep scheduling (EASS) scheme that will improve the sleep scheduling scheme of an existing tree-based routing protocol. An energy harvesting structure will be implemented on the wireless sensor network. The depth of sleep of every node will be based on the harvested energy.
Location Estimation Enhancement Using Space-time Signal Processing in Wireless Sensor Networks: Non-coherent Detection

In this paper, we proposed a novel location estimation algorithm based on the concept of space-time signature matching in a moving target environment. In contrast to previous fingerprint-based approaches that rely on received signal strength (RSS) information only, the proposed algorithm uses angle, delay, and RSS information from the received signal to form a signature, which in turn is utilized for location estimation. We evaluated the performance of the proposed algorithm in terms of the average probability of error and the average error distance as a function of target movement. Simulation results confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for location estimation even in moving target environment.
An Energy Efficient Cluster Formation and Maintenance Scheme for Wireless Sensor Networks

Nowadays, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) comprise a tremendously growing infrastructure for monitoring the physical or environmental conditions of objects. WSNs pose challenges to mitigating energy dissipation by constructing a reliable and energy saving network. In this paper, we propose a novel network construction and routing method by defining three different duties for sensor nodes, that is, node gateways, cluster heads, and cluster members, and then by applying a hierarchical structure from the sink to the normal sensing nodes. This method provides an efficient rationale to support the maximum coverage, to recover missing data with node mobility, and to reduce overall energy dissipation. All this should lengthen the lifetime of the network significantly.
A Model for Reusing Requirements Using Examples from Open Source Software

The quality of requirements is one of the key factors in the success of a project. One of the studies on successful projects is the reuse of requirements. However, the rate of failed projects is about 70%, and these projects often fail because of improper requirements. The current techniques for software reuse may not perform requirement engineering appropriately or develop requirements having good characteristics. In order to improve this situation, we propose a model for reusing requirements. We expect that our model will contribute toward increasing project productivity using requirement reuse in existing projects, and reusing requirements that have good quality.
Humidity Induced Defect Generation and Its Control during Organic Bottom Anti-reflective Coating in the Photo Lithography Process of Semiconductors

Defect generation during organic bottom anti-reflective coating (BARC) in the photo lithography process is closely related to humidity control in the BARC coating unit. Defects are related to the water component due to the humidity and act as a blocking material for the etching process, resulting in an extreme pattern bridging in the subsequent BARC etching process of the poly etch step. In this paper, the lower limit for the humidity that should be stringently controlled for to prevent defect generation during BARC coating is proposed. Various images of defects are inspected using various inspection tools utilizing optical and electron beams. The mechanism for defect generation only in the specific BARC coating step is analyzed and explained. The BARC defect-induced gate pattern bridging mechanism in the lithography process is also well explained in this paper.
Visible Distortion Predictors Based on Visual Attention in Color Images

An image attention model and its application to image quality assessment are discussed in this paper. The attention model is based on rarity quantification, which is related to self-information to attract the attention in an image. It is relatively simpler than the others but results in taking more consideration of global contrasts between a pixel and the whole image. The visual attention model is used to develop a local distortion predictor, named color visual differences predictor (CVDP), in color images in order to effectively detect luminance and color distortions.
Tracking of 2D or 3D Irregular Movement by a Family of Unscented Kalman Filters

This paper reports on the design of an object tracker that utilizes a family of unscented Kalman filters, one for each tracked object. This is a more efficient design than having one unscented Kalman filter for the family of all moving objects. The performance of the designed and implemented filter is demonstrated by using simulated movements, and also for object movements in 2D and 3D space.
PSNR-based Initial QP Determination for Low Bit Rate Video Coding

In H.264/AVC, the first frame of a group of pictures (GOP) is encoded in intra mode which generates a large number of bits. The number of bits for the I-frame affects the qualities of the following frames of a GOP since they are encoded using the bits remaining among the bits allocated to the GOP. In addition, the first frame is used for the inter mode encoding of the following frames. Thus, the initial quantization parameter (QP) affects the following frames as well as the first frame. In this paper, an adaptive peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR)-based initial QP determination algorithm is presented. In the proposed algorithm, a novel linear model is established based on the observation of the relation between the initial QPs and PSNRs of frames. Using the linear model and PSNR results of the encoded GOPs, the proposed algorithm accurately estimates the optimal initial QP which maximizes the PSNR of the current GOP. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed algorithm predicts the optimal initial QP accurately and thus achieves better PSNR performance than that of the existing algorithm.
