A Study on Wavelet-based Denoising Algorithm for Signal Reconstruction in Mixed Noise Environments
Bae, Sang-Bum ; Kim, Nam-Ho ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 1~6
In the process of the acquisition, storage, transmission of signals, noises are generated by various causes and the degradation phenomenon by noises tends to generate serious errors for the signal with information. So, in order to analyze and remove these noises, studies on numerous mathematical methods such as the Fourier transform have been implemented. And recently there have been many ongoing wavelet-based denoising algorithms representing excellent characteristics in time-frequency localization and multiresolution analysis, but the method to remove additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and the impulse noise simultaneously was not given. So, to reconstruct the corrupted signal by noises, in this paper a novel wavelet-based denoising algorithm was proposed and using signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) this method was compared to conventional methods.

Bhardwaj, Sachin ; Lee, Dae-Seok ; Chung, Wan-Young ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 7~11
The aim of this paper is to design and implement a new ECG signal monitoring and analysis method for the home care of elderly persons or patients, using wireless sensor network (WSN) technology. The wireless technology for home-care purpose gives new possibilities for monitoring of vital parameter with wearable biomedical sensors and will give the patient freedom to be mobile and still be under continuously monitoring. Developed platform for portable real-time analysis of ECG signals can be used as an advanced diagnosis and alarming system. The ECG features are used to detect life-threatening arrhythmias, with an emphasis on the software for analyzing the P-wave, QRS complex, and T-wave in ECG signals at server after receiving data from base station. Based on abnormal ECG activity, the server transfer diagnostic results and alarm conditions to a doctor's PDA. Doctor can diagnose the patients who have survived from arrhythmia diseases.
The DOA Estimation of Wide Band Moving Sources
Cho, Mun-Hyeong ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 12~16
In this paper, a new method is proposed for tracking the direction-of-arrival (DOA) of the wideband moving source incident on uniform linear array sensors. DOA is estimated by focusing transformation matrices. To update focusing matrices along with new data snap shots, we use the FAST (Fast Approximate Subspace Tracking) method. Present focusing matrices are constructed by previous signal and its orthogonal basis vectors as well as present signal and its orthogonal basis vectors, which are the left and right singular vectors of the inner product of two approximated matrices. Simulation results are shown to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.
Distortion Compensation of WDM Signals with initial frequency chirp in the Modified Mid-Span Spectral Inversion Technique
Lee, Seong-Real ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 17~22
In this paper, the optimal value of optical phase conjugator (OPC) position and the optimal values of dispersion coefficients of fiber sections for the best compensation of the distorted WDM signals with frequency chirp of -1 are induced to alternate with the symmetrical distributions of power and local dispersion with respect to OPC, which is difficult to form in real optical link due to fiber attenuation in mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) technique. It is confirmed that the Q-factors of total channels of -18.5 dBm launching light power exceed 16.9 dB, which value corresponds to 10-12 BER, by applying the induced optimal parameter values into 16 channels
40 Gbps WDM system, on the other hand the Q-factors of only 9 channels exceed that value in WDM system with the conventional MSSI technique. Thus, it is expected to expand the availability of OPC in WDM system through the using of the optimal parameter values that are induced by the proposed method in this paper, without the symmetrical distributions of power and local dispersion.
Performance Evaluation of ATM Switch Structures with AAL Type 2 Switching Capability
Sonh, Seung-Il ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 23~28
In this paper, we propose ATM switch structure including AAL type 2 switch which can efficiently transmit low-bit rate data, even if the network has many endpoints. We simulate the architecture of ATM switch fabric that is modeled in computer program and analyze the performance according to offered loads. ATM switch proposed in this paper can support cell switching for all types of AAL cells which consist of AAL type 1, AAL type 2, AAL type 3/4, and AAL type 5 cells. We propose two switch fabric methods; One supports the AAL type 2 cell processing per input port, the other global AAL type 2 cell processing for every input port. The simulation results show that the latter is superior to the former. But the former has a strong point for easy implementation and extensibility. The proposed ATM switch fabric architecture is applicable to mobile communication, narrow band services over ATM network.
A Medium Access Control Protocol for rt- VBR Traffic in Wireless ATM Networks
Lim, In-Taek ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 29~34
This paper proposes a MAC protocol for real-time VBR (rt-VBR) services in wireless ATM networks. The proposed protocol is characterized by a contention-based mechanism of the reservation request, a contention-free polling scheme for transferring the dynamic parameters, and a priority scheme of the slot allocation. The design objective of the proposed protocol is to guarantee the real-time constraint of rt-VBR traffic. The scheduling algorithm uses a priority scheme based on the maximum cell transfer delay parameter. The wireless terminal establishes an rt-VBR connection to the base station with a contention-based scheme. The base station scheduler allocates a dynamic parameter minislot to the wireless terminal for transferring the residual lifetime and the number of requesting slots as the dynamic parameters. Based on the received dynamic parameters, the scheduler allocates the uplink slots to the wireless terminal with the most stringent delay requirement. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol can guarantee the delay constraint of rt-VBR services along with its cell loss rate significantly reduced.
A Modified FCM for Nonlinear Blind Channel Equalization using RBF Networks
Han, Soo-Whan ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 35~41
In this paper, a modified Fuzzy C-Means (MFCM) algorithm is presented for nonlinear blind channel equalization. The proposed MFCM searches the optimal channel output states of a nonlinear channel, based on the Bayesian likelihood fitness function instead of a conventional Euclidean distance measure. In its searching procedure, all of the possible desired channel states are constructed with the elements of estimated channel output states. The desired state with the maximum Bayesian fitness is selected and placed at the center of a Radial Basis Function (RBF) equalizer to reconstruct transmitted symbols. In the simulations, binary signals are generated at random with Gaussian noise. The performance of the proposed method is compared with that of a hybrid genetic algorithm (GA merged with simulated annealing (SA): GASA), and the relatively high accuracy and fast searching speed are achieved.

Analysis of Short Channel Effects Using Analytical Transport Model For Double Gate MOSFET
Jung, Hak-Kee ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 45~49
The analytical transport model in subthreshold regime for double gate MOSFET has been presented to analyze the short channel effects such as subthreshold swing, threshold voltage roll-off and drain induced barrier lowering. The present approach includes the quantum tunneling of carriers through the source-drain barrier. Poisson equation is used for modeling thermionic emission current, and Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximations are applied for modeling quantum tunneling current. This model has been used to investigate the subthreshold operations of double gate MOSFET having the gate length of the nanometer range with ultra thin gate oxide and channel thickness under sub-20nm. Compared with results of two dimensional numerical simulations, the results in this study show good agreements with those for subthreshold swing and threshold voltage roll-off. Note the short channel effects degrade due to quantum tunneling, especially in the gate length of below 10nm, and DGMOSFETs have to be very strictly designed in the regime of below 10nm gate length since quantum tunneling becomes the main transport mechanism in the subthreshold region.

Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 50~53
This paper presents face features detection and a new physiological neuro-fuzzy learning method by using two-dimensional variances based on variation of gray level and by learning for a statistical distribution of the detected face features. This paper reports a method to learn by not using partial face image but using global face image. Face detection process of this method is performed by describing differences of variance change between edge region and stationary region by gray-scale variation of global face having featured regions including nose, mouse, and couple of eyes. To process the learning stage, we use the input layer obtained by statistical distribution of the featured regions for performing the new physiological neuro-fuzzy algorithm.
Distortion Variation Minimization in low-bit-rate Video Communication
Park, Sang-Hyun ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 54~58
A real-time frame-layer rate control algorithm with a token bucket traffic shaper is proposed for distortion variation minimization. The proposed rate control method uses a non-iterative optimization method for low computational complexity, and performs bit allocation at the frame level to minimize the average distortion over an entire sequence as well as variations in distortion between frames. The proposed algorithm does not produce time delay from encoding, and is suitable for real-time low-complexity video encoder. Experimental results indicate that the proposed control method provides better visual and PSNR performances than the existing rate control method.
A CLB-based CPLD Low-power Technology Mapping Algorithm considered a Trade-off
Youn, Choong-Mo ; Kim, Jae-Jin ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 59~63
In this paper, a CLB-based CPLD low-power technology mapping algorithm considered a Trade-off is proposed. To perform low-power technology mapping for CPLDs, a given Boolean network has to be represented in a DAG. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps. In the first step, TD(Transition Density) calculation has to be performed. Total power consumption is obtained by calculating the switching activity of each node in a DAG. In the second step, the feasible clusters are generated by considering the following conditions: the number of inputs and outputs, the number of OR terms for CLB within a CPLD. The common node cluster merging method, the node separation method, and the node duplication method are used to produce the feasible clusters. In the final step, low-power technology mapping based on the CLBs packs the feasible clusters. The proposed algorithm is examined using SIS benchmarks. When the number of OR terms is five, the experiment results show that power consumption is reduced by 30.73% compared with TEMPLA, and by 17.11 % compared with PLA mapping.

Kim, Soon-Seok ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 68~72
In this paper, we present robust and secure metering scheme to measure the number of interactions between clients and servers in the web, especially the web advertising. In most cases the web advertising is consists of advertisers, clients, servers, and an audit agency. The metering scheme should always be secure against fraud attempts by servers which maliciously try to inate the number of their visits and against clients that attempt to disrupt the metering process. We propose robust and secure metering scheme based on cryptographic techniques. By analyzing the proposed scheme we show that our scheme is more robust and secure than the previous schemes [1,2,4,5].

Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 73~77
This paper discusses the implementation of a rehabilitation center based on a ubiquitous sensor network. This paper discusses the implementation of a rehabilitation center based on a ubiquitous sensor network. We recognize that certain mild conditions requiring rehabilitation may be treated with minimal human supervision. In place of this constant human supervision, a variety of sensors are used to monitor the patient and rehabilitation progress. These sensors send data through a wireless Zigbee network to a server which stores the data and makes it available to a rehabilitation expert for analysis. This rehabilitation expert also issues rehabilitation prescriptions which are created based on the expert's determination of the patient's condition. By having the ability to control the rehabilitation equipment used, strictly enforce the assigned prescription, and constantly monitor the patient for any warning signs, the system ensures a safe and optimal rehabilitation session.

Lee, Kyu-Won ;
Journal of information and communication convergence engineering, volume 5, issue 1, 2007, Pages 78~82
This paper propose a building reconstruction method of urban area for a 3D GIS with stereo images. The 3D reconstruction is performed by the grouping 3D line segments extracted from the stereo matching of salient edges which are derived from multiple images. The grouping is achieved by conditions of degrees and distances between lines. Building objects are determined by the junction combinations of the grouped line segments. The proposed algorithm demonstrates effective results of 3D reconstruction of buildings with 2D aerial images.
