A New High Efficiency Half Bridge Converter with Improved ZVS Performance

A new asymmetrical pulse width modulation (PWM) half bridge converter with improved ZVS performance is proposed. The ZVS operation of the proposed converter can be maintained from no load to full load conditions since the magnetizing current of the transformer contributes to the ZVS operation at light loads without considerable conduction loss of the transformer and switch. Synchronous rectification is employed to reduce the rectification loss. Operational principles, large signal modeling, ZVS analysis and design equations are presented. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed converter can achieve a large ZVS range and significant improvement in efficiency for a 100W (5V, 20A) prototype converter.
Power Quality Improvement of an Electric Arc Furnace Using a New Universal Compensating System

This paper presents a new compensating system, consisting of series and shunt active filters, for mitigating voltage and current disturbances. The shunt filter is used to compensate for unbalanced and distorted load currents. The series filter comprises two inverters, used to suppress voltage disturbances and handle source currents independently. This configuration is devised to reduce the overall cost of active compensators by using low-frequency high-current switches for the latter inverter. The filters are controlled separately using a novel control strategy. Since voltages at the point of common coupling contain interharmonics, conventional methods cannot be used for extracting voltage references. Therefore, voltage references are obtained from generated sinusoidal waveforms by a phase-locked loop. Current references are detected based on rotating frame vector mapping. Simulation results are presented to verify the system.
Dual Path Magnetic-Coupled AC-PDP Sustain Driver with Low Switching Loss

A cost-effective magnetic-coupled AC-PDP sustain driver with low switching loss is proposed. The transformer reduces current stress in the energy recovery switches which affects circuit cost and reliability. The turns-ratio can be used to adjust the sustain pulse slopes which affect gas discharge uniformity. Dividing the recovery paths prevents abrupt changes in the output capacitance and thereby switching losses of the recovery switches is reduced. In addition, the proposed circuit has a more simple structure because it does not use the recovery path diodes which also afford a large recovery current. By reducing the current stress and device count in the energy recovery circuit, the proposed driver may have decreased circuit cost and improved circuit reliability.
Reduced Rating T-Connected Autotransformer Based Thirty-Pulse AC-DC Converter for Vector Controlled Induction Motor Drives

The design and performance analysis of a reduced rating autotransformer based thirty-pulse AC-DC converter is carried out for feeding a vector controlled induction motor drive (VCIMD). The configuration of the proposed autotransformer consists of only two single phase transformers, with their windings connected in a T-shape, resulting in simplicity in design, manufacturing and in a reduction in magnetics rating. The design procedure of the autotransformer along with the newly designed interphase transformer is presented. The proposed configuration has flexibility in varying the transformer output voltage ratios as required. The design of the autotransformer can be modified for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse diode bridge rectifier is used. The proposed thirty-pulse AC-DC converter is capable of suppressing less than
harmonics in the supply current. The power factor is also improved to near unity in the wide operating range of the drive. A comparison of different power quality indices at AC mains and DC bus is demonstrated in a conventional 6-pulse AC-DC converter and the proposed AC-DC converter feeding a VCIMD. A laboratory prototype of the proposed autotransformer based 30-pulse AC-DC converter was developed with test results validating the proposed design and system.
Maximum Power Point Tracking Controller Connecting PV System to Grid

Photovoltaic (PV) generators have nonlinear V-I characteristics and maximum power points which vary with illumination level and temperature. Using a maximum power point tracker (MPPT) with an intermediate converter can increase the system efficiency by matching the PV systems to the load. This paper presents a maximum power point tracker based on fuzzy logic and a control scheme for a single-phase inverter connected to the utility grid. The fuzzy logic controller (FLC) provides an adaptive nature for system performance. Also the FLC provides excellent features such as fast response, good performance and the ability to change the fuzzy parameters to improve the control system. A single-phase AC-DC inverter is used to connect the PV system to the grid utility and local loads. While a control scheme is implemented to inject the PV output power to the utility grid at unity power factor and reduced harmonic level. The simulation results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
A Novel Sensorless Low Speed Vector Control for Synchronous Reluctance Motors Using a Block Pulse Function-Based Parameter Identification

Recently, speed sensorless vector control for synchronous reluctance motors (SYRMs) has deserved attention because of its advantages. Although rotor angle calculation using flux estimation is a straightforward approach, the DC offset can cause an increasing pure integrator error in this estimator. In addition, this method is affected by parameter fluctuation. In this paper, to control the motor at the low speed region, a modified programmable cascaded low pass filter (MPCPLF) with sensorless online parameter identification based on a block pulse function is proposed. The use of the MPCLPF is suggested because in programmable, cascade low pass filters (PCLPF), which previously have been applied to induction motors, the drift increases vastly wl)en motor speed decreases. Parameter identification is also used because it does not depend on estimation accuracy and can solve parameter fluctuation effects. Thus, sensorless speed control in the low speed region is possible. The experimental system includes a PC-based control with real time Linux and an ALTERA Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD), to acquire data from sensors and to send commands to the system. The experimental results show the proposed method performs well, speed and angle estimation are correct. Also, parameter identification and sensorless vector control are achieved at low speed, as well as, as at high speed.
Detection of Broken Bars in Induction Motors Using a Neural Network

This paper presents a method based on neural networks to detect the broken rotor bars and end rings of squirrel cage induction motors. At first, detection methods are studied, and then traditional methods of fault detection and dynamic models of induction motors by using winding function model are introduced. In this method, all of the stator slots and rotor bars are considered, thus the performance of the motor in healthy situations or breakage in each part can be checked. The frequency spectrum of current signals is derived by using Fourier transformation and is analyzed in different conditions. In continuation, an analytical discussion and a simple algorithm are presented to detect the fault. This algorithm is based on neural networks. The neural network has been trained by using information of a 1.1 KW induction motor. This system has been tested with a different amount of load torque, and it is capable of working on-line and of recognizing all normal and ill conditions.
High Performance and Low Cost Single Switch Current-fed Energy Recovery Circuits for AC Plasma Display Panels

A high performance and low cost single switch current fed energy recovery circuit (ERC) for an alternating current (AC) plasma display panel (PDP) is proposed. Since it is composed of only one power switch compared with the conventional circuit consisting of four power switches and two large energy recovery capacitors, the ERC features a simpler structure and lower cost. Furthermore, since all power switches can be switched under soft switching operating conditions, the proposed circuit has desirable merits such as increased reliability and low switching loss. Specifically, there are no serious voltage notches across the PDP with the aid of gas discharge current compensation, which can greatly reduce the current stress of all inverter switches, and provide those switches with the turn on timing margin. To confirm the validity of proposed circuit, its operation and performance were verified on a prototype for 7-inch test PDP.
Position Control of Magnetic Levitation Transfer System by Pitch Angle

Magnetic levitation transfer systems are useful for transfer tools in clean rooms and positioning control systems with high precision because of frictionless characteristics. In this paper, the new method is proposed which is a sensorless position. At first, the magnetic levitation is performed by state feedback control with a disturbance observer for each of six axes of the movement of a levitated vehicle. The position of the vehicle is then estimated as the disturbance term of a disturbance observer for a pitch angle which is one of the control axes for the magnetic levitation. In addition, the positioning force is generated by the pitch angle control which gives a tilt to the levitated vehicle so that it generates the horizontal component of force.
A New High Efficiency ZVZCS Bidirectional DC/DC Converter for HEV 42V Power Systems

A new high efficiency zero-voltage and zero-current switching (ZVZCS) bidirectional DC/DC converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter consists of two symmetric half-bridge cells as the input and output stages. MOSFETs of input stage are turned-on in ZVS condition, and those of output stage are turned-off in ZCS condition. In addition, MOSFETs of input and output stages have low voltage stresses clamped to input and output voltage, respectively. Therefore, the proposed converter has high efficiency and high power density. The operational principles are analyzed and the advantages of the proposed converter are described. The 300W prototype of the proposed converter is implemented for 42V hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) application in order to verify the operational principles and advantages.
