An Input Current Waveshaping AC-DC Converter for Rectifier Loads

This paper presents the design and analysis of a new input AC current wave shaping AC-DC converter for cost effective harmonic mitigation under varying loads. The proposed converter consists of a delta-polygon connected autotransformer based twelve-pulse AC-DC converter and a small rating passive shunt filter tuned at
harmonic frequency. The proposed AC-DC converter eliminates the most dominant
harmonics and reduces higher order harmonics; thereby, resulting in an improved power quality at AC mains. Moreover, the design of the autotransformer is modified to make it suitable for retrofit applications, where presently a 6-pulse diode bridge rectifier is used. To validate the proposed approach, various power quality indices are presented under varying loads. Experimental results obtained on the developed converter are given to validate the model and design of the proposed converter.
New Control Scheme for the Wind-Driven Doubly Fed Induction Generator under Normal and Abnormal Grid Voltage Conditions

The wind-driven doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is currently under pressure to be more grid-compatible. The main concern is the fault ride-through (FRT) requirement to keep the generator connected to the grid during faults. In response to this, the paper introduces a novel model and new control scheme for the DFIG. The model provides a means of direct stator power control and considers the stator transients. On the basis of the derived model, a robust linear quadratic (LQ) controller is synthesized. The control law has proportional and integral actions and takes account of one sample delay in the input owing to the microprocessor's execution time. Further, the influence of the grid voltage imperfection is mitigated using frequency shaped cost functional method. Compensation of the rotor current pulsations is proposed to improve the FRT capability as well as the generator performance under grid voltage unbalance. As a consequence, the control system can achieve i) fast direct power control without instability risk, ii) alleviation of the problems associated with the DFIG operation under unbalanced grid voltage, and iii) high probability of successful grid FRT. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is confirmed through simulation studies on 2MW DFIG.
Torque Ripples Minimization of DTC IPMSM Drive for the EV Propulsion System using a Neural Network

This paper deals with a Direct Torque Control (DTC) of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) for the Electric Vehicle (EV) propulsion system using a Neural Network (NN). The Conventional DTC with optimized switching lookup table and three level torque controller generates relatively large torque ripples in an electric vehicle motor drive. For reducing the torque ripples, a three level torque controller is hereby replaced by the five level torque controller. Furthermore, the switching lookup table of the five level torque controller based DTC is replaced with a Neural Network. These DTC schemes of an IPMSM drive are simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulated results are compared with the conventional DTC and it is found that the ripples in the torque, as well as in the stator current, are reduced drastically.
Circuit Properties of Zero-Voltage-Transition PWM Converters

A zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) pulse width modulated (PWM) converter is a PWM converter with a single main power switch that has an auxiliary circuit to help it turn on with zero-voltage switching (ZVS). There have been many ZVT-PWM converters proposed in the literature as they are the most popular type of ZVS-PWM converters. In this paper, the properties and characteristics of several types of ZVT-PWM converters are reviewed. A new type of ZVT-PWM converter is then introduced, and the operation of a sample converter of this type is explained and analyzed in detail. A procedure for the design of the converter is presented and demonstrated experimentally. The feasibility of the new converter is confirmed with results obtained from an experimental prototype. Conclusions on the performance of ZVT-PWM converters in general are made based on the efficiency results obtained from the experimental prototypes of various ZVT-PWM converters of different types.
Analysis, Design, Modeling, Simulation and Development of Single-Switch AC-DC Converters for Power Factor and Efficiency Improvement

This paper addresses several issues concerning the analysis, design, modeling, simulation and development of single-phase, single-switch, power factor corrected AC-DC high frequency switching converter topologies with transformer isolation. A detailed analysis and design is presented for single-switch topologies, namely forward buck, flyback, Cuk, Sepic and Zeta buck-boost converters, with high frequency isolation for discontinuous conduction modes (DCM) of operation. With an awareness of modem design trends towards improved performance, these switching converters are designed for low power rating and low output voltage, typically 20.25W with 13.5V in DCM operation. Laboratory prototypes of the proposed single-switch converters in DCM operation are developed and test results are presented to validate the proposed design and developed model of the system.
Three-Phase AC-to-DC Resonant Converter Operating in High Power Factor Mode in High-Voltage Applications

In this paper a three-phase ac-to-dc resonant converter with high input power factor and isolated output is proposed. To improve the input power factor of the converter, high frequency current is injected into the input of the three-phase diode bridge rectifier. It is injected through an impedance network consisting of a series of L-C branches from the output of the high frequency three-phase inverter. A narrow switching frequency variation is required to regulate the output voltage. A design example with different design curves is illustrated along with the component ratings. Experimental verification of the converter is performed on a prototype of 3 kW, 1000 V output, operating above 300 kHz. Experimental results confirm the concept of the proposed converter. Narrow switching frequency variation is required to regulate the output voltage.
Implementation of Direct Torque Control Method using Matrix Converter Fed Induction Motor

This paper develops a direct torque control method (DTC) using a matrix converter fed induction motor. The advantages of matrix converters are combined with the advantages of the DTC technique; under the constraint of the unity input power factor, the required voltage vectors are generated to implement the conventional DTC method of induction motor. The proposed DTC algorithm is applied to induction motors and the experimental results are given in steady-state and transient conditions, while the discussion about the trend of the DTC method using the MC is also carried out. Furthermore, the entire system of the matrix converter configuration using 7.5kW IGBT module is explained in detail.
Battery Energy Storage System Based Controller for a Wind Turbine Driven Isolated Asynchronous Generator

This paper presents an investigation of a voltage and frequency controller for an isolated asynchronous generator (IAG) driven. by a wind turbine and supplying 3-phase 4-wire loads to the isolated areas where a grid is not accessible. The control strategy is based on the indirect current control of the VSC (voltage source converter) using the frequency PI controller. The proposed controller consists of three single-phase IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Junction Transistor) based VSC, which are connected to each phase of the IAG through three single phase transformers and a battery at their DC link. The controller has the capability of controlling reactive and active powers to regulate the magnitude and frequency of the generated voltage, harmonic elimination, load balancing and neutral current compensation. The proposed isolated system is modeled and simulated in MATLAB using Simulink and PSB (Power System Block-set) toolboxes to verify the performance of the controller.
Frequency Characteristics of the Synchronous-Frame Based D-Q Methods for Active Power Filters

The d-q harmonic detecting algorithms are dominant methods to generate current references for active power filters (APF). They are often implemented in the synchronous frame and time domain. This paper researches the frequency characteristics of d-q synchronous transformations, which are closely related to the analysis and design issues of control system. Intuitively, the synchronous transformation is explained with amplitude modulation (AM) in this paper. Then, the synchronous filter is proven to be a time-invariant and linear system, and its transfer function matrix is derived in the stationary frames. These frequency-domain models imply that the synchronous transformation has an equivalent effect of frequency transformation. It is because of this feature, the d-q method achieves band-pass characteristics with the low pass filters in the synchronous frame at run time. To simplify these analytical models, an instantaneous positive-negative sequence frame is proposed as expansion of traditional symmetrical components theory. Furthermore, the synchronous filter is compared with the traditional bind-pass filters based on these frequency-domain analytical models. The d-q harmonic detection methods are also improved to eliminate the inherent coupling effect of synchronous transformation. Typical examples are given to verify previous analysis and comparison. Simulation and experimental results are also provided for verification.
Decision Tree with Optimal Feature Selection for Bearing Fault Detection

In this paper, the features extracted from vibration time signals are used to detect the bearing fault condition. The decision tree is applied to diagnose the bearing status, which has the benefits of being an expert system that is based on knowledge history and is simple to understand. This paper also suggests a genetic algorithm (GA) as a method to reduce the number of features. In order to show the potentials of this method in both aspects of accuracy and simplicity, the reduced-feature decision tree is compared with the non reduced-feature decision tree and the PCA-based decision tree.
