Financial Decline of Pakistan Railways and Prospective Turnaround

We have studied the financial performance of Pakistan Railways and found that the financial indicator (net earnings ratio) of Pakistan Railways is consistently decreasing over the years, causing severe financial and operational crises. The implication of our study indicates that the `3Rs` Strategy (retrenchment, repositioning and reorganizing) should be put into practice and furthermore, favorable changes in environmental factors can also contribute towards organizational turnaround. This study would help the Government of Pakistan to think and plan more clearly about turnaround strategies that could improve the performance and growth of Pakistan Railways.
Competitive Advantages and Disadvantages of Trans-Siberian Railway Route -Case study of Korea and Japan-

TSR (Trans-Siberian Railway) route is losing price competitiveness versus Deep Sea route in the transportation from East Asia to Europe, including Moscow. To further attracting the containers to the TSR route, it will be necessary (1) to keep competitive through rate, linked to fluctuating Deep Sea rate; (2) to strengthen speed advantage; (3) to enforce seamless transportation system, including simplified customs clearance procedures. In transportation to Central Asia from East Asia (Korea and Japan), TSR is competitive versus TCR (Trans-China Railway), depending on destinations. Korea has been the leader in revitalizing the TSR route since 2000. Key contributors were affluent export containers to Russia and Central Asia, port of Busan, efficient maritime transport network to Far East Russia, and Korean forwarders` persistent efforts for activating the market. Korea and Japan have a possibility of cooperation in using the TSR route efficiently, such as organizing a joint block train to a same destination.
Calculating the Contact Stress Resulting from Lateral Movement of the Wheel on Rail by Applying Hertz Theory

This article has tried to review the maximum contact stresses in the contact area of the wheel and rail as a result of lateral movement of the wheel on rail by taking advantage from Hertz theory. Since wheel movement on rail is accompanied by lateral movement due to wheel profile conisity, so the contact point of wheel and rail is not constant and the contact stresses are therefore changeable in every single moment. Since the shape of rail profile and rail inclination, wheel diameter and the mechanical properties of the wheel and rail are effective on the stresses of contact area, these parameters have been studied by applying Hertz theory. This article aims to calculate the contact stresses in different parts on the wheel surface by using Hertz theory.
Vibration Analysis of Railway Tracks Forced by Distributed Moving Loads

The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical model to analyze the vibration of finite railways forced by distributed moving loads. The vibration characteristics of compliantly supported beam utilizing compressional damping model were investigated through the Rayleigh-Ritz method. The distributed moving load was analyzed as the cross correlation function on railways. This allowed the use of statistical characteristics for simulation of the moving train wheels on the rail. The results showed there is a critical velocity inducing resonant vibration of the rail. The mass spring resonance from the rail fastening systems exhibited significant influence on the resulting vibration response. In particular, the effect of the viscoelastic core damping was investigated as an efficient method for minimizing rail vibration. The decrease of the averaged vibration and rolling noise generation by the damping core was maximized at the mass-stiffness-mass resonance frequency.
Analysis of Spiral Lattice Girder Shape in preparation for HSR Speed Increase

A spiral lattice girder-reinforced Bi-block sleeper which has enhanced durability against increasingly growing impact force and vibration by wheel load and improved structural performance while train runs at 350km/h high speed is hereby proposed. The section of a spiral lattice girder has stable and superior structural performance thanks to its confinement effect. To compare and analyze the structural performance of spiral lattice girder-reinforced bi-block sleeper, strain and stress distribution were evaluated after applying same load condition as existing triangular lattice girder-reinforced biblock sleeper, and to compare the structural performance of triangular lattice girder and spiral lattice girder, structural analysis of lattice girder was performed separately. As a result, a spiral lattice girder proved to have had superior structural characteristics to bi-block sleeper, and furthermore as a result of evaluating the fastener interface and constructibility with shape-improved lattice girder, no interference with existing railroad structure was found and in terms of cost efficiency, a spiral lattice girder appeared to be superior to existing lattice girder.
