Prevalence of Parasite Infection of Poultry(turkey, helmeted guineafowl, pheasant, duck) in Chonbuk Province
Korean Journal of Veterinary Service, volume 16, issue 2, 1993, Pages 91~96
In order to monitor the parasites, fecal samples were taken from turkey (n=157), helmeted guineafowl(n=149), pheasant(n=190) and duck(n=190) in Chonbuk province. The identification of the parasites were determined by the fecal examination using the fluatation method and microscopical examination. The results were obtained as follows；1. The detection rate oi the parasites from 4 species of poutry was 47.2%(n=324 heads) out of 686 heads. 2. The identification rate was 85.9% in helmeted guineafowl, 63.2% in pheasant, 44.6% in turkey and 3.2% in duck, in order. 3. The mixed infection rate such as single, double, triple and quadrupl was 25.4%(174 heads), 14.1%(97 heads), 7.3%(50 heads) and 0.4%(3 heads), respectively. 4. The parasites isolated were identified as Capillaria spp. in 225 heads, Eimeria spp in 169 heads, Heterakis gallinarum in 116 heads, Ascaridia galli in 16 heads, Hymenolepis spp. in 3 heads and Strongyloides avium in 1 head, in order.
A Survey of Swine Internal Parasites at the Sawdust Fermentative Pigsty
Korean Journal of Veterinary Service, volume 16, issue 2, 1993, Pages 97~102
This study was performed to survey on the prevalence of swine internal parasites at 12 piggeries being operated by the sawdust fermentative pigsty in Kyongnam central area. To investigate the effects of viability of eggs, larva and cysts, temperatures at the underlayer of the sawdust floor and rooms of pens were taken four times each season for one year. In a pig farms which have been operated by the sawdust fermentative pigsty, eggs of Ascar is suum(8.8%), Trichr is suis(18.3%), Oesophagostomum sp(9.4%), Strongyloides ransomi(1.3%), Hyostrongylus sp(3.8%) and Metastronylus apri(2.3%) were detected from 480 heads of Pigs. Cysts and oocysts of Coccidia(12.7%), Balantidium coli(5.4%) were also detected form 480 heads of pigs. The change of the temperature in the pig room was variable between
accord-ing to outside condition, whereas that in underfloor was consistently stable between
which was strictly suitable for the development of eggs, larva and cysts.
Studies on disease of catfish(Silurus asotus) in Korea Pathology of skin ulcerous by A. hydrophila
Korean Journal of Veterinary Service, volume 16, issue 2, 1993, Pages 103~110
The Aeromonas strains were isolated from diseased cultured catfsh (Silurus asotus) in the ponds near by Gochang of Chunbuk. The present isolates were identified as A. hydrophila based on their biological and biochemica1 characteristics. The isolates of A. hydrophila were named GC-1, GC-2, GC-3, GC-4 and GC-5, Five strains were grew optimally at temperatures
pH 7.5 and in 0.5 to l% NaCl. This bacterium(GC-1) was injected into health catfish in order to prove the causative agent of ascites and haemorrhagic ulcers. The symptoms in cat fish infected by this challenge method were observed to be very similar to the symptoms of a natural infection, but controls did not show any abnormal symptoms during the experimental period. At 24 post-injection, the red spot developed around the injection site and the haemorrhagic ulcers was extended near the gill and ventral fin. Five strains were tested for drug sensitivity by plate method. All strains were sensitivity to gentamicin and resistant to penicillin, streptomycin and tetracycline.
Detection of Edwardsiella tarda, the Pathogenic Bacteria in Freshwater Fishes by Means of the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Technique
Korean Journal of Veterinary Service, volume 16, issue 2, 1993, Pages 111~119
In this study, we carried out the rapid diagnostic system based on indirect fluorescent anti-body technique (IFAT) for detection of bacterial diseases in cultured freshwater fishes. 1. When the fishes were tested with graded dilution of Edwardsiella tarda FPC 470 bacteria detection from ten fishes Injected with
colony forming unit(CFU) /ml, all of them were detected by IFAT but only two fishes were recognizable by the culture method in the tested fishes injected with
CFU /ml. 2. The bacteria E. tarda could be detected by IFAT method from 1 to 48hrs after Injection in the tissues tested such as kidney, liver and spleen of the fishes, whereas detection by culture method could be recognized from 1 to 48hrs after injection In the kidney and spleen but it was not possible from preinjection to 1 hr in the liver. 3. Thus, IFAT proved to be more useful technique than plate culture method in the diagnosis of Edwardsiellosis in the freshwater fishes.

Korean Journal of Veterinary Service, volume 16, issue 2, 1993, Pages 120~126
Clinically healthy 66 female Maniker breed chicken(22 of 2-week-old : group A, 23 of 8-week-old： group B and 21 of 27-week-old： group C) and 66 female Manina breed chicken (21 of 2-week-old : group D, 22 of 8-week-old : group E and 23 of 27-week-old : group F) were examined to establish physiological basic data on serum total Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) activities and CPK isoenzymes fractions. The results obtained were summarized as follows； 1. Serum total CPK activities were
in gorup A, group B and group C of Maniker breed, respectively. Group B and group C showed higher values than that of group A (P<0.01) meaning high values nth aging. 2. Serum total CPK activities were
in group D, group E and group F of Manina breed, respectively. Group D showed the highest value among groups (P<0.01) and Manina breed showed the low values of serum total CPK activities with aging. 3. Manina breed at 2-week-old and Maniker breed at 8-week-old and 27-week-old showed significant high values of total serum CPK activities in breed differance (P<0.01) 4. In the pattern of serum CPK isoenzyme fractions, group A and group B were high with decreasing order of $CK_3>CK_2>CK_1$ and group C was high with decreasing order of $CK_2> CK_3>CK_1$ Groihp D, E and F showed the same pattern with decreasing order of $CK_2>CK_3> CK_1.$ 5. Significance of CPK isoenzymes fractions in breed differance was only found at 8-week-old.
in Maniker breed (P<0.05), and
in Manina breed were higher than that of the other breed (P < 0.01).

Korean Journal of Veterinary Service, volume 16, issue 2, 1993, Pages 150~156
The present study was conducted to investigate the biochemical characteristics and anti-biotic resistance of pathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolated from piglets with diarrhea in Kyongbuk Western Area during the period from February to November 1992. 55 E. coli strains were isolated from 97 piglets with diarrhea and the biochemical and cultural reaction were compared with the classification criteria of Edwards and Ewing. The majority of E. coli were susceptible to amikacln, enrofloxacin and gentamicin. 51 (92.7%) out of 55 drug resistance stains carried R factor (R+) which were transferable to the recipients by conjugation.
Biological Properties and Antimicrobial Drug Susceptibilities of Salmonella pullorum Isolated from Diseased Chickens
Korean Journal of Veterinary Service, volume 16, issue 2, 1993, Pages 157~165
The present study was conducted to investigate biochemical properties, antimicrobial drug susceptibilities and epidemiology of 71 stranins of Salmonella pullorum isolated from about 110 diseased chickens of 23 poultry farms located in Cheongjoo, Cheongweon and Koesan county, Chungbuk province, from August 1991 to March 1993. The isolates were identified as S. pullorum by serological and biochemical means. S. pullorum were mostly isolated in chicken under 3weeks of age, and also isolated in 58, 72 days and 23 weeks of age. According to breeds, most of the cultures were isolated in colored broiler chicken (14 to 23 cases), and also variously isolated in native chicken, white broiler chicken, black bone chicken and laying hen. According to organs of diseased chickens, most of the cultures were isolated in liver (37 to 71 strains), and also variously isolated in spleen, lungs, blood, heart, oviduct and brain. According to media used for primary culture from organs, most of the cultures were isolated purely with SS and BHI medium. The majority of biochemical properties of S. pullorum isolated from diseased chickens were identical to those of the standard strains, but in the properties of rhamnose, and arabinose fermentation, some isolates were negative in spite of positive in those of standard S. pullorum. All the isolates were highly susceptible to colistin, amikacin, kanamycin, gentamicin, carbenicillin, ampicillin, sulfamethxazole, cephalothin, tetracycline and piperacillin regardless of isolated years, but no susceptible to penicillin, erythromycin, vancomycin, tylosin and novobiocin.
