A Study on Pyramid of Binary Image Using Mathematical Morphology
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1239~1247
Mathematical morphology based on the set theory has been applied to various areas in image processing. In this study, we propose a new pyramid structure for binary images based on the morphological operations. We use a specific class of structuring elements to shrink or expand images, and prove that the whole operations are separable to construct the pyramid. Through a simulation study, we show that the pyramid can be used as a progressive image coding.
A design method for optical fiber filter of lattice structure
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1248~1256
The propagation and delay properties in opical fiber are particularly attractive because digital signal processing and conventional analog signal processing techniques such as those using surface acoustic wave devices are limited In their usefulness for signal bandwidth exceeding one or two GHz, although they are very effective at lower frequencies. Since an accurate, low loss and short time delay elements can be obtained by using such an optical fiber, optical signal precessing has attracted much attention for high speed and broad-band signal precessing in particular channel separation filtering for optical FDM signals. In this paper, we consider a coherent optical lattice filter, which uses coherent light sources and consists of directional couplers and optical fiber delay elemnts. The optical fiber fitters are more restricted than the usual digital filters. The reasons are as follows. 1) the coupling coefficients of directional couplers are restricted to the number between 0 and 1. 2) optical signal E(complex amplitude) is divided into J If-
and J L/7
at the directional coupler. Considering these restrictions and in this case all the coupling coefficients of summing and branching elements are set to be equal, we have given design formulae for optical lattice filter, which make the best use of optical signal energy.

An recognition of printed chinese character using neural network
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1269~1282
In this paper, we propose to method of recognizing printed chinese characters which combine the coventional deterministic methods and the neural networks. Firstly, we extract four directional vector of strokes from chinese characters. Secondly, we make the mesh of the center of gravity in the vector and then constitute the H x8 feature matrix using black pixel lenth from each meshs. This normalized feature matrix value offer as the input of neural network for classifying into the 14 character types. And this calssified character classify again into Busu group by the Busu recognizing neural network. Finally, we recognize each characters using the distance of similarity between input characters and reference characters. The usefulness of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by experimenting with recognizing the chinese characters.
A Simulation Study on the Performance of Transport Protocol HSTP and TP4
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1283~1294
The conventional transport protocols, developed on top of the low-bandwidth high-error network services, exhibit poor performances when operating in the new high-bandwidth low-error networks. A new transport protocol HSTP(High Speed Transport Protocol) was proposed to take advantage of the new network environment. This paper gives a performance evaluation by simulation technique of the proposed HSTP and conventional TP4(Transport Protocol class 4) in their data trans-fer characteristics. The performance variation by HSTP and TP4 are investigated when their various error control techniques are employed, three different techniques for HSTP, and two for TP4. The performance enhancement in HSTP is also evaluated when the rate control technique is used as part of the flow control mechanisms.
New Digital Multisignature Scheme with Concurrency
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1295~1303
We present an 1-out-of-n noninteractive OT(Oblivious Transfer) protocol based on the Diffle-Hellman assumption and a new fair exchange scheme of secret information among multi-users. Using the noninteractive OT protocol and the fair exchange scheme, we also present a new digital multisignature scheme based on Fiat-Shamir signature scheme and analyze its security. Owing to its concurrency, viability, and dishonesty detectablility, the proposed digital multisignature scheme is applicable to electronic multi-user contract systems.
A Study on the Performances of the Voice/Data Integrated Multiple Access Protocols for Cellular Packet Radio Networks
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1304~1314
During the last several years, the demand of mobile communication is increasing rapidly due to the convenience of usage. Therefore, the evoluation scenario toward the new cellular network is needed. In this paper, the future prospect of cellular network is considered, and movable-boundary TDMA/BTMA protocol is proposed as a new voice/data integrated multiple access protocol for the future cellular packet radio networks. Then, the performance of movable-bounary TDMA/BTMA protocol is analyzed and compared with that of PRMA protocol by computer simulation. In the proposed movable-boundary TDMA/BTMA protocol, the voice traffic sensitive to delay time is served by TDMA protocol and the data traffic sensitive to loss is served by BTMA protocol. Also, the boundary of voice and data can be moved adaptively by usign SYN character, control byte, voice call counter, ect. Therefore. it could be seen that the performance of movable-boundary TDMA/BTMA protocol is better than that of PRMA protocol with respect to delay and throughput.

A Study on Implementation of a VXIbus System Using Shared Memory Protocol
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1332~1347
Existing instruments are composed independently according to their function and user constructed instrumentation system with those instruments. But in the late 1980s VXI bus enables to construct instrumentation system with various modular type instruments. For an VXI bus system with the word serial protocol, an increase of data size can degrade the system performance. In this paper shared memory protocol is proposed to overcome performance degradation. The shared memory protocol is analyzed using the GSPN and compared with that of the word serial protocol. It is shown that the shared memory protocol has a better performance than the word serial protocol. The VXI bus message based-system with the proposed shared memory protocol is constructed and experimented with signal generating device and FFT analyzing device. Up to 80 KHz input signal the result of FFT analysis is accurate and that result is agree with that of conventional FFT analyzer. In signal generating experiment from 100 KHz to 1.1 GHz sine wave is generated.
An Efficient Vocoder for Digital Cellular System
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1348~1357
In this paper, we present code-excited linear prediction coding using trellis coded vector excitation, termed trellis code-excited linear prediction coding (TCELP), for an efficient 8 kbps digital cellular vocoder. A training sequence-based algorithm is developed for designing an optimized codebook subject to the TCELP structure. Also, we discuss the encoding complexity of the TCELP system and trellis symbol release rules that avoid excessive encoding delay. finally, simulation results results for the TCELP coder are given at the bit rate of 8 kbps.
A Study on the Design of OMCR(Optical Mark and Character Reader) System based on Image Processing
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1358~1367
In this paper, OMR system based on image processing is developed which improve the performance of conventional OMR system based on line-scan method. Based on this OMR system, real-time OCR system which recognizes alphanumerics is also developed. We propose the OMCR system which recognize the mark and numerals at the same time. Besides, we improve the input system using constrained 7-segment type handwritten numeral instead of mark to solve the problem caused by miswriting the mark. In summary, we verified the reai-time recognition performance of developed OMCR system using application form for admission, answer sheet for college entrance examination and receipt sheet.
Decentralized Robust Adaptive Controller Design
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1368~1375
This paper deals with the decentralized robust adaptive controller design for large-scale interconnected systems. We consider an arbitrary interconnection of subsystems with unkown parameters and bounded disturbances. When the disturbance and uncertain interconnections are present, the stability of the controlled large scale system is ensured if there exists a positive definite M-matrix which is related to the bound of the interconnections. The possible bound of the interconnections is assumed to be known Pth order polynomials for the decentralized adaptive controller. A modified adaptive law is proposed guaranteeing the existence of a region of attraction from which all signals converge to a residual set Do, which contains the equilibrium.
Design of an OPtimal Controller for the Nonlinear Robot Manipulators with the Actuator Dynamics
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1376~1385
This paper presents a new dynamic model which is represented by the second order differenatial equation and itcludes the robot arm dynamics as well as the actuator dynamics. The model exhibits excellent performance in the steady state and transient response. In addition the time varing nonlinear and coupled dynamic system has been linearized and decoupled by using nonlinear feedback and linearization method. In this case a pole assignment law is used to improve stability, and the optimal control altorithm is applied to the error equation to minimize the path error. In applying the proposed algorithm to the three joint manipulator with actuators, we obtained very encouraging results.
Multimedia Data Synchronization Based on Monitor and Scheduling Method
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1386~1394
It has been very difficult and inefficient to implement data synchronization in the multimedia information systems until now, because most data synchronizations have been implemented by ad hoc methodologies. In this paper, we propose a new synchroniation methodology implemented by scheduling using monitor. If users definece the temporal relationships of media data using high level user interface, then the monitor selects media data started at that time and controls setup time and precessing time. The scheduler determines the scheduling method or selected media data and adjusts the synchronization among them.
A Effective Generation of Protocol Test Case Using The Depth-Tree
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1395~1403
Protocol conformance is crucial to inter-operability and cost effective computer communication. Given a protocol specification, the task of checking whether an inplementation conforms to the specification is called conformance testing. The efficiency and fault coverage of conformance testing are largely dependent on how test cases are chosen. Some states may have more one UIO sequence when the protocol is represented by FSM (Finite State Machine). The length of test sequence can be minimized if the optimal test sequences are chosen. In this paper, we construct the depth-tree to find the maximum overlapping among the test sequence. By using the resulting depth-tree, we generate the minimum-length test sequence. We show the example of the minimum-length test sequence obtained by using the resulting depth-tree.
An Embedded Timing Loss Detector for Robust Data Transmission
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 18, issue 9, 1993, Pages 1404~1411
Unlike voice communication, data transmission, can be seriously affected by transient channel impairments. In some cases, timing synchronization between the transmitter and the receiver may not be recovered in the presence of these kinds of impairments without a forced reinitialization process. Therefore, it is highly desirable for data communication equipment to have an efficient timing loss detector for robust recovery. In this paper, one such detector is proposed for data transceivers haying a secondary channel embedded in the main channel. A known sequence multiplexed with the secondary channel data is repeatedly sent through the embedded secondary channel. For continuous watch-dog like operation, the detection is sequentially performed based on a modified up/down counter scheme. The performance of the proposed detector is analytically evaluated In closed form.
