Pattern Spectrum Component Function and Warning Traffic Sign Recognition
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 401~409
In this paper, a pattern spectrum component function is introduced for an oriented shape analysis and its properties are discussed. It can represent directional information of shape more precisely than the conventional oriented pattern spectrum. An adaptive distance function between two pattern spectrum component functions is presented to recognize different shapes in noise. As a practical application, the pattern spectrum component function is applied to warning traffic sign recognitions utilizing the adaptive distance functions. Favorable results are obtained compared to the oriented pattern spectrum.
Bilingual document analysis and character segmentation using connected components
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 410~422
In this paper, we descried a bottom-up document structure analysis method in bilingual Korean-English document. We proposed a character segmentation method based on the layout information of connected component of each character. In many researches, a document has been analyzed into text blocks and graphics. We analyzed a document into four parts: text, table, graphic, and separator. A text is recursively subdivided into text blocks, text lines, words, and characters. To extract the character in bilingual text, we proposed a new method of word of word separation of Korean or English. Futhermore, we used a character merging and segmentation method in accordance with the properties of Hangul on the Korean word blocks. Experimental results on the various documents show that the proposed method is very effectively operated on the document structure analysis and the character segmentation.
MEC; A new decision tree generator based on multi-base entropy
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 423~431
A new decision tree generator MEC is proposed in this paper, which uses the difference of multi-base entropy as a consistent criterion for discretization and selection of attributes. To evaluate the performance of the proposed generator, it is compared to other generators which use criteria based on entropy and adopt different discretization styles. As an experimental result, it is shown that the proposed generator produces the most efficient classifiers, which have the least number of leaves at the same error rate, regardless of whether attribute values constituting the training set are discrete or continuous.
Regional hierachical segmentation and contour simplification method for very low bit rate coding in mobile communication
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 432~443
This paper presents contour simplification method and a regional hierarchical segmentation algorithm based on PSNR for the transmission of image in mobile communication, of which available bandwidth is very limited. It first takes into account the global information and produces a coarse segmentation, that is, with a small number of regions. Then, each segmented region has different quality. Thus, the region with low quality is selected by PSNR and improved by introducing regions corresponding to more local information. It is able to improve the subjective quality of image and reduce contour information. In addition, contour simplification method is proposed for the efficient lossless chain coding. The proposed method can be applied to the applications such as mobile communications and videotelephone through PSTN, of which the available transmission bandwidth is very limited.
Design of a cosynthesis system for pipelined application-specific instruction processors
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 444~453
This paper presents the prototype design of hardware/software cosynthesis system for pipelined application-specific instruction processors. Taking application programs in VHDL as inputs, the proposed system generates a pipelined instruction-set processor and the instruction sequences running on the generated machine. The design space of datapath and controller is defined by the architectural templates embedded in the system. Generating the intyermediate code adequate for parallelism analysis and extraction, the system converts it into assembly codes. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed system.
A bitwidth optimization algorithm for efficient hardware sharing
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 454~468
This paper presents a bitwidth optimization algorithm for efficient hardware sharing in digital signal processing system. The proposed algorithm determines the fixed-point representation for each signal through bitwidth optimization to generate the hardware requiring less area. To reduce the operator area, the algorithm partitions the abstract operations in the design description into several groups, such that the operations in the same group can share an operator. The partitioning result are fed to a high-level synthesis system to generate the pipelined fixed-point datapaths. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in SODAS-DSP an automatic synthesis system for fixed-point DSP hardware. Accepting the models of DSP algorithms in schematics, the system automatically generates the fixed-point datapath and controller satisfying the design constraints in area, speed, and SNR(Signal-to-Noise Ratio). Experimental results show that the efficiency of the proposed algorithm by generates the area-efficient DSP hardwares satisfying performance constraints.
Moving image coding with variablesize block based on the segmentation of motion vectors
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 469~480
For moving image coding, the variable size of region coding based on local motion is more efficient than fixed size of region coding. It can be applied well to complex motions and is more stable for wide motions because images are segmented according to local motions. In this paper, new image coding method using the segmentation of motion vectors is proposed. First, motion vector field is smoothed by filtering and segmented by smoothed motion vectors. The region growing method is used for decomposition of regions, and merging of regions is decided by motion vector and prediction errors of the region. Edge of regions is excluded because of the correlation of image, and neighbor motion vectors are used evaluation of current block and construction of region. The results of computer simulation show the proposed method is superior than the existing methods in aspect of coding efficiency.
A study on pattern recognition using DCT and neural network
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 481~492
This paper presents an algorithm for recognizing surface mount device(SMD) IC pattern based on the error back propoagation(EBP) neural network and discrete cosine transform(DCT). In this approach, we chose such parameters as frequency, angle, translation and amplitude for the shape informantion of SMD IC, which are calculated from the coefficient matrix of DCT. These feature parameters are normalized and then used for the input vector of neural network which is capable of adapting the surroundings such as variation of illumination, arrangement of objects and translation. Learning of EBP neural network is carried out until maximum error of the output layer is less then 0.020 and consequently, after the learning of forty thousand times, the maximum error have got to this value. Experimental results show that the rate of recognition is 100% in case of the random pattern taken at a similar circumstance as well as normalized training pattern. It also show that proposed method is not only relatively relatively simple compare with the traditional space domain method in extracting the feature parameter but also able to re recognize the pattern's class, position, and existence.
A design of visual weighted quantizer for wavelet image compression
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 493~505
In this paper, a wavelet image compression method using human visually estimated quantizer is proposed. The quantizer has three components. These are constructed by using effects of frequency band, background luminance, and spatial masking. The first quantization factor is a fixed constant value for each band. The second factor is calculated by averaging four wavelet coefficients in the lowest frequency band. The third factor is determined by the difference between wavelet coefficients in the lowest frequency band. Arithmetic coding is used for encoding quantized wavelet coefficients. Coefficients in the lowest band are transmitted without loss. Therefore the compressed image is decompressed by using three quantization factors which can be calculated in the receiver. Compared with previous image compression methods which adopted human visual system, the proposed method shows improved results with less computational cost.
FPGA circuit implementation of despreading delay lack loop for GPS receiver and preformance analysis
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 506~514
In this paper, we implement digital circuit of despreading delay lock loop for GPS receiver. The designed system consists of Epoch signal generator, two 13bit correlators which correlates the received C/A code and the locally generated C/A code in the receiver, the C/A code generator which generates C/A code of selected satellite, and the direct digital clock synthesizer which generates the clock of the C/A code generator to control the phase and clock rate, the clock controller, and the clock divider. The designed circuit has the function of the acquisition and tracking by the autocorrelation characteristics of Gold code. The controller generates each other control signals according to the correlation value. The designed circuit is simulated to verify the logic functional performance. By using the simulator STR-2770 that generates the virtual GPS signal, the deigned FPGA chip is verified the circuit performance.
Direction-of-arrival estimation of coherent spread spectrum signals using signal eigenvector
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 515~523
A high resolution algorithm is presented for resolving multiple coherent spread spectrum signals that are incident on an equispaced linear array. Unlike the conventional noise-eigenvector based methods, this algorithm makes use of the signal eigenvectors of the array spectral density matrix that are associates with eigenvalues that are larger than the sensor noise level. Simulation results are shown to demonstate the high performance of the proposed approach in comparison with MUSIC in which coherent signal subspace method (CSM) is employed.
A novel optical cell compressor for optical time division multiplexing system
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 524~531
A novel optical cell compressor for optical time division multiplexing system is presented. The compressor is capable of generating optically compressed very high bit-rate (possibly several tens of Gb/s) signals with minimum hardware. Contrast to the previously reported optical compressor, the compressor is mainly composed of passive optical devices and requires no synchronization among control signals in the process of compression, which results in simple implementation. We demonstrate a generation of optically compressed 6 Gb/s optical cells to confirm the fundamental operation of the compressor.
Antenna factors of short dipole antennas with roberts balun
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 532~538
Exactly aclculated antenna factors are requeired for determining EMI levels in an actual radiated emission test. In this paper, the antenna factors of short dipole antennas above the ground plane are calculated theoretically for the antenna with Roberts balun specified ANSI C63.5 regulation. Also treated is a half-wavelength dipole antenna with Roberts balun to compare the antenna factors with those of resonant dipole antenna. In formulationof antenna factors the antenna is treated as the boundary value problem of Maxwells equations and is analyzed by the Galerkins method of moments. The balun is treated using circuit theory based on power transmission mismatch.
A new analysis on timing jitters in APD receivers of optical communication systems when considering intersymbol interferences
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 539~546
In this paper, we proposed a new mehtod to analyze the performance degradation by timing jitters in the APD (avalanche photodiode) receivers of intensity modulation/direct detection digital optical communication systems where raised cosine pulse-shaping filters are used to reduce the effect of noise while minimizing intersymbol interferences. The proposed analytical method is an extension of an analytical method we have already developed for pin diode receivers, and incorporates the effects of APD's multiplication factor and resulting shot noise. Using the proposed analytical method, we derive an approximated power penalty due to timing jitters based on an assumption of Gaussian distribution for timing jitters, and compare with that of the conventional analytical method. The results obtained from the proposed analytical method show that conventional analytical methods underestimate the influence of timing jitters on the reciver performance. The results also show that APD's multiplication factor which optimizes receiver sensitivity is smaller than that obtained by the conventional analytical method.
A fairness control mechanism for access control protocol of B-ISDN ring subscriber network
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 547~556
In this paper we suggest a dynamic quota allocation mechansim for B-ISDN(Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) subscriber networks. The quota adaptation decision based on the number of cells in the transmission queue is made distributively by each node in the ring network. This mechanism provides both fairness and efficiency for it enables each node to adapt its quota under asymmetric traffic condition. The simulation results show that substantial improvements in access delay time and throughput can be achieved with this algorithm.

with ideal autocorrelation, and enumerate them.
Eestimation method in DS/CDMA systems with pilot signal
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 562~570
In Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access(DS/CDMA) communication systems, it is important to contraol the power of reverse link channel evenly for overall channel capacity. To control the reverse link powers efficiently, it is necessary to estimate signal quality of each reverse link channel. In this paper, we discuss a method to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) for each channel by measuring the powers of pilot and noises. Computer simulations are done to show the effectiveness of the scheme.
Capacity comparison of different transmission types on the reverse link for wideband DS-CDMA cellular system
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 571~579
There are some transmission types on the reverse link of wideband DS-CDMA cellular system. The configurations of logical channels on the reverse link may be different dependent upon the transmission methods of reverse pilot or control signaling. In this paper, we present three transmission types on the wideband DS-CDMA reverse link; no-pilot system, pilot-channel aided system and pilot-symbol aided system. And we compare the performance of three systems in terms of capacity and cell coverage. The pilot-symbol aided system is shown to have the better performance than the pilot-channel aided system in both capacity and cell coverage.
A VPC/VCC managment scheme of ATM network using SNMP
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 580~592
Since an ATM network consists of a number of VPC/VCC requiring various QoS requirements, the end-to-end QoS for each VPC/VCC should be guaranteed. Although many research works on the traffic control are under study to guarantee the QoS, there have been research efforts to reflect the results of network management functions into the traffic control mechanism. To effectively make use of the performance management functions into the VPC/VCC management, threre is a need for the network manager to rapidly retrieve the relevant information. In this research, the mechanism to effectively retrieve the management information using SNMP is suggested. First of all, we construct the MIBs in the agent for the corresponding VPC/VCC. Also, we suggest the way to retrieve MIB with minimum cost. Mathematical analysis shows that the proposed technique has better performance than that using the existing SNMP.
A dynamic connection admission control algorithm using variable-sized moving window in ATM networks
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 22, issue 3, 1997, Pages 593~603
Connection admission decision in ATM networks requires decision made in real time using fast algorithm. It is difficult to construct a model of the multiplexed traffic and thus, approximation of the traffic load is necessary. In this paper, we propose a measurement-based dynamic CAC(Connection admission Control) in ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networks, which observes current traffic by the moving window and set the window size to the value which is computed from the measured cell loss amount. It is based on the measurements of the traffic load over an admission period that is load enough to reflect the current traffic behavior instead of analytic modeling. And, the dynamic reallocation of bandwidth for each class leads to effective bandwidth utilization. The performance of proposed method is analyzed through computer simulation. The performance of proposed method is analyzed by using SIMAN simulation package and FORTRAN language. As can be seen in the simulation result, cell loss performance and bandwidth utilization have been increased.
