Design and Implementation of MPEG-4 Streaming System with Prioritized Adaptive Transport
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 859~867
To provide high-quality media streaming service over the best-effort Internet, a streaming methodology is required to response to the dynamic fluctuation of underlying networks. In this paper, we implement the MPEG-4 streaming system with adaptive transport based on priorities of media packets. The implemented system is composed of the common MPEG-4 streaming components such as elementary stream provider, sync and DMIF layer, and adaptive transport module including data prioritization and FEC control. More specifically, the prioritized sync layer packets (based on object level) are delivered to the transport module and then are encoded by an adaptive FEC encoder to help reliable transport. The FEC combination is dynamically adjusted by the feedback information from the receiver. In addition, low priority packets are selectively dropped to meet the limitation of available bandwidth. The experimental results over the emulation-based testbed show that the Proposed system can mitigate the impact of network fluctuation and thus improve the quality of streaming.
Zone-based Power Control Scheme for DS-CDMA Reverse Link Systems
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 868~878
In this paper, we analyse feasibility of Zone-based Power Control (ZPC) scheme introduced for CDMA forward link(1) in the reverse link. To operate ZPC scheme in the CDMA systems the maximum power level that can be allocated to each traffic channel should be determined. Because all the service channels share the whole power resource in the forward lint a specific mechanism that determines Maximum power resource to each traffic channel is required to operate ZPC scheme in the forward link. However, ZPC scheme can be easily adopted to the reverse link, because of the fact that the whole power resource of service terminal is only confined to its traffic channel. In other words, we need not to determine the maximum power resource to be allocated in the reverse traffic channel. Simulation results show that ZPC scheme adopted to the reverse link yields a significant performance improvement compared with the conventional TPC(IS-95 TPC) scheme in terms of the power consumption and the traffic capacity of Portables, especially with the increasing number of high-rate data traffics. With the proposed scheme, not only be extended the service coverage of high-rate data traffic to the entire cell service coverage, but also the QoS of low-rate traffic can keep going through the service time, especially, in the situation that the incoming interference is much larger.
A Research on The Real Time Video Traffic Transmission Mechanism in IP Based Mobile Networks
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 879~888
In this paper, we propose a real time QoS(Quality of Service) guaranteed transmission mechanism for MPEG video traffic at the congested node in IP based networks. Recent spread of the Internet has increased the demands of a real time multimedia service of the quality, Because the type of Internet services can, however, offer the best effort delivery strategies, it is difficult to treat all the types of traffic with differential COS (Class of Service). Most of all, the hierarchical coding method of MPEG data utilizes the reference frame for the motion prediction. The loss of the reference frames makes QoS of the video traffic degraded because the reference frame bit error causes the consecutive packet loss. Therefore we have studied the real time QoS guaranteed mechanism for video traffic by analyzing the previous methods. Computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better performance than the previous one.
A study on the Adaptive Subcarrier Assignment techniques for interference suppression in OFDM System
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 889~897
In this Paper, we propose the algorithm to provide stable communication in OFDM system under the highly interfered environment by the same/different systems which use same bandwidth or other jamming signal, i.e., radar signal. The proposed Adaptive Subcarrier Assignment(ASA) method first estimates the received power of each subcarrier in the block or fin or OFDM receiver. Then we estimate the threshold level which is the average power of the transmitted OFDM signal with AWGN. The highly interfered subcarriers, which are greater powers than the specified threshold level, are rejected in the next transmission and the only non-interfered subcarriers are selected as the next transmission. This algorithm provides stable communication in any OFDM systems without changing the physical layer under the highly interfered communication environment. We estimated the status of the subcarriers based on the bandwidth and power of the jamming signal and showed the performance of the proposed algorithm by the simulation.
Design of high-speed preamble searcher adequate for RACH preamble structure in WCDMA reverse link receiver
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 898~908
In this paper, we propose a high speed preamble searcher feasible for RACH(Random Access Channel) preamble structure in WCDMA reverse link receiver. Unlike IS-95, WCDMA system uses AISMA(Acquisition Indication Sense Multiple Access) process. Because of the time limit between RACH preamble transmission and AI(Acquisition Indicators), and the restriction on the number of RACH signatures assigned to RACH preamble, fast acquisition indication is required for efficient operation. The preamble searcher proposed in this paper is based on 2-antenna system and has adopted FHT algorithm that has the radix-2 16 point FFT structure. The acquisition speed using FHT is 64 times faster than the conventional method that correlates each signature. Based on their fast aquisition scheme, we improved the acquisition performance by calculating the correlation up to the 4096 chips of the total preamble length. The performance is analyzed by using Neyman-pearson method. The proposed algorithm has been applied for the implementation of WCDMA reverse link receiver modem successfully.
Handoff Delay Analysis of IP Mobility Management Schemes Using SIP and MIP
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 909~917
Mobility support is one of the most important functions to provide seamless data transfer for real-time multimedia services in wireless networks. In this paper, we analyze and compare the handoff delay performances for several architectures such as MIP-RO, SIP, MIP-RO/CIP and SIP/CIP, which are expected to be a promising solution to support IP mobility management. For the analysis, we make the detailed message flows of those architectures in handoffs, and then make an analytical model to compute the handoff delay for each scheme. Numerical results showed that the SIP/CIP approach outperformed other schemes in the viewpoints of the handoff delay.
Adaptive Power Control Dynamic Range Algorithm in WCDMA Downlink Systems
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 918~927
WCDMA system is 3rd generation wireless mobile system specified by 3GPP. In WCDMA downlink, two power control schemes are operated. One is inner loop power control operated in every slot. Another is outer loop power control based on one frame time. Base station (BS) can estimate proper transmission power by these two power control schemes. However, because each MS's transmission power makes a severe effect on BS's performance, BS cannot give excessive transmission power to the specific user. 3GPP defined Power Control Dynamic Range (PCDR) to guarantee proper BS's performance. In this paper, we propose Adaptive PCDR algorithm. By APCDR algorithm, Radio Network Controller (RNC) can estimate each MS's current state using received signal to interference ratio (SIR). APCDR algorithm changes MS's maximum code channel power based on frame. By proposed scheme, each MS can reduce wireless channel effect and endure outages in cell edge. Therefore, each MS can obtain better QoS. Simulation result indicate that APCDR algorithm show more attractive output than fixed PCDR algorithm.
Efficient MAC Protocol for Achieving Fairness in Wireless Ad-hoc Networks under the DCF
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 928~936
This paper proposes simple and effective Contention Window (CW) adjusting algorithm to solve the fairness problem of the IEEE 802.11 under the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF). This adjusting algorithm can support variable packet length as well as both RTS/CTS access method and hidden nodes. Simulation results show that fairness problem can be very severe in the original MAC protocol of the wireless network. In case of implement our algorithm, fair sharing was enlarged prominently and the fairness sharing was improved about maximum 30%.

In this paper, we propose a efficient multicast routing algorithm in the wire/wireless integrated environment. Through simulations and comparing to another multicast algorithm, we reach a conclusion is that the routing algorithm can simply and dynamically adjusts the construction of multicast tree with little delay and the most reducible bandwidth resources.
Past Anti-Collision Algorithm in Ubiquitous ID System
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 942~949
This paper proposes and analyzes the anti-collision algorithm in Ubiquitous ID system. We mathematically compares the performance of the proposed algorithm with that of binary search algorithm, slotted binary tree algorithm using time slot, and bit-by-bit binary tree algorithm proposed by Auto-ID center. We also validated analytic results using OPNET simulation. Based on the analytic results, comparing the proposed algorithm with bit-by-bit algorithm which is the best of existing algorithms, the performance of proposed algorithm is about 5% higher when the number of tags is 20, and 100% higher when the number of tags is 200.
Measurement and Analysis of Propagation Characteristics in Curved Subway Tunnel Environments
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 950~961
In this paper, we measured and analyzed propagation characteristics in a subway tunnel that is recently increasingly becoming one of the radio communication environments. The measurements are carried out in a subway tunnel with frequency bands of 2.45㎓ and 5.8㎓. The length of tunnel we used for this study is 175m of LOS (Line-of-sight) and 270m of NLOS (Non Line-of-Sight). The subway tunnel is curved and its cross section is horseshoe type. The measurement systems we employ in this study are a narrow-band system and a wide-band system. The narrow-band system is used to get path loss measurement and the wide-band system is used to figure out delay profile measurement. In particular, the wide-band system consists of 1023 length PN sequence generator using a chip rate of 80MHz based on a sliding correlation technique. The omni-directional antennas and directional antennas are used to analyze propagation characteristics for beam type of antenna. The path loss displays only pure path loss of a tunnel environment. The delay profile indicates the mean excess delay and RMS (root mean square) delay spread.
Analysis of Scattering Characteristics of a Rectangular Waveguide with Conducting Half Cylinders using the Mode Matching Method
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 29, issue 8A, 2004, Pages 962~971
In this paper, we present the numerical analysis method for analyzing scattering characteristics of a rectangular waveguide with the conducting half cylinder using the mode matching method and compute scattering characteristics of a waveguide according to the rotation and changing radius of the half cylinder. Also, in conjunction with the generalized scattering method, the proposed method can be easily applied to a rectangular waveguide with cascade structure of conducting half cylinders. From the simulated result of a two pole filter, resonance frequency could be controlled by the rotation of half cylinders. The simulated result shows good agreement with the HFSS's result. The proposed structure and analysis method are easily applied to the design of waveguide components with conducting half cylinders.
