Park So Ryoung ; Song Iickho ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 313~319
In this paper, we propose a class of polyphase signature sequences, whose general odd correlation properties are useful for 4-phase signaling systems. The performance of the direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems using the proposed sequences is compared with that using binary pseudo-noise sequences. The performance of the system using the proposed sequence is shown to be better than that using other conventional sequences both from the worst-case analysis and bit error rate simulations.

Hypercube has a capability of fault-tolerance and regularity, which is easy to develop an algorithm. Many algorithms have been developed as an efficient fault-tolerance routing algorithm using hypercube. Among these algorithms, a method which use safe and unsafe concept was developed by Masuyama. Masuyama suggested an enhanced algorithm that take advantage of unsafe-safe concept. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that uses the unsafe, safe concept and modify Masuyama's algorithm. Using simulator we compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with existing algorithms.

Lee Yusung ; Park Hyuncheol ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 329~337
In this paper, we propose a new type of RAKE receiver for complementary code keying (CCK) codes, which is suitable for the multipath channel with large delay spread. Our proposed system is based on channel matched filter (CMF) with decision feedback equalizer (DFE) and contains codeword DFE structure. In our system, inter chip interference (ICI) and inter symbol interference (ISI) generated due to multipath environments are calculated by using detected CCK codeword. Also it uses the error correcting capability of CCK codes, and it can remove ISI and ICI at the same time.

The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 338~343
MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems are considered as one of the most promising systems for next generation mobile communication systems which require efficient frequency resource utilization as well as high data rate transmissions. BLAST-STTC is the MIMO system which transmits information from many of STTC encoder groups with two transmit antennas and cancels the interference from other groups in receiver. In this paper we propose a reverse-ordered iterative decoding scheme for BLAST-STTC systems which achieve full diversity gain for all groups and improve the performance of interference cancellation, and compare the error performance of the proposed scheme with general schemes.

Seo Young-Ho ; Kim Dong-Wook ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 344~354
In this paper, we proposed a new lifting architecture for JPEG2000 and implemented to ASIC. We proposed a new cell to execute unit calculation of lifting using the property of lifting which is the repetitious arithmetic with same structure, and then recomposed the whole lifting by expanding it. After the operational sequence of lifting arithmetic was analyzed in detail and the causality was imposed for implementation to hardware, the unit cell was optimized. A new lifting kernel was organized by expanding simply the unit cell, and a lifting processor was implemented for Motion JPEG2000 using it. The implemented lifting kernel can accommodate the tile size of
, and support both lossy compression using the (9,7) filter and lossless compression using (5,3) filter. Also, it has the same output rate as input rate, and can continuously output the wavelet coefficients of 4 types(LL, LH, HL, HH) at the same time. The implemented lifting processor completed a course of ASIC using
CMOS library of SAMSUNG. It occupied about 90,000 gates, and stably operated in about 150MHz though difference from the used macro cell for the multiplier. Finally, the improved operated in about 150MHz though difference from the used macro cell for the multiplier. Finally, the performance can be identified in comparison with the previous researches and commercial IPs.

This paper is discussed about the technology of the performance enhancement in the wireless communication between indoor and outdoor environments. In the outdoor wireless communication, the signal has mainly a severe degradation by the fading effect of channel, but that problem may be overcome by using ordinary multiple antenna technology and array signal processing algorithm. Hence, since the channel has the characteristics of both fading and angle spread in the wireless communication between indoor and outdoor, the ordinary technology cannot solve the signal degradation due to the angle spread. In order to solve the problem, in this paper, the characteristic of the wireless channel between indoor and outdoor is first analyzed and considered the channel models fit to that case. We propose the new multiple antenna algorithm by use of mean steering vector concept, and obtained the results of the performance enhancement. With the results of the performance analyses through of the numerical study and computer simulation, we show that the proposed algorithm has more enhanced signal to noise ratio than the previous algorithm.
Registration Error Compensation for Face Recognition Using Eigenface
Moon Ji-Hye ; Lee Byung-Uk ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 364~370
The first step of face recognition is to align an input face picture with database images. We propose a new algorithm of removing registration error in eigenspace. Our algorithm can correct for translation, rotation and scale changes. Linear matrix modeling of registration error enables us to compensate for subpixel errors in eigenspace. After calculating derivative of a weighting vector in eigenspace we can obtain the amount of translation or rotation without time consuming search. We verify that the correction enhances the recognition rate dramatically.
VLSI architecture design of CAVLC entropy encoder/decoder for H.264/AVC
Lee Dae-joon ; Jeong Yong-jin ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 371~381
In this paper, we propose an advanced hardware architecture for the CAVLC entropy encoder/decoder engine for real time video compression. The CAVLC (Context-based Adaptive Variable Length Coding) is a lossless compression method in H.264/AVC and it has high compression efficiency but has computational complexity. The reference memory size is optimized using partitioned storing method and memory reuse method which are based on partiality of memory referencing. We choose the hardware architecture which has the most suitable one in several encoder/decoder architectures for the mobile devices and improve its performance using parallel processing. The proposed architecture has been verified by ARM-interfaced emulation board using Altera Excalibur and also synthesized on Samsung 0.18 um CMOS technology. The synthesis result shows that the encoder can process about 300 CIF frames/s at 150MHz and the decoder can process about 250 CIF frames/s at 140Mhz. The hardware architectures are being used as core modules when implementing a complete H.264/AVC video encoder/decoder chip for real-time multimedia application.

The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 382~390
Huffman codes are widely used for image and video data transmission. As the increase of real-time data, a lot of studies on effective decoding algorithms and architectures have been done. In this paper, we proposed a balanced binary search tree for Huffman decoding and compared the performance of the proposed architecture with that of previous works. Based on definitions of the comparison of codewords with different lengths, the proposed architecture constructs a balanced binary tree which does not include empty internal nodes, and hence it is very efficient in the memory requirement. Performance evaluation results using actual image data show that the proposed architecture requires small number of table entries, and the decoding time is 1, 5, and 2.41 memory accesses in minimum, maximum, and average, respectively.

Jung Hyeok-Koo ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 391~397
Since space time block code (STBC) technique of a transmission diversity technique was introduced, multiple input multiple output techniques using transmission diversity at the basestation for improving transmission data rate, have been studied extensively. Multiplexed STBC OFDM technique uses multiple groups of two transmit antennas and suppresses the interference signals of other STBC OFDM groups at the receivers. In this paper, I propose a new method of iterative decoding and maximal ratio receive combining technique for multiplexed STBC OFDM systems, and simulated and showed the results in comparison with the conventional methods.

The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 398~405
The multiuser detection (MUD) based wireless receiver requires more accurate channel estimation than the single user detection (SUD) schemes such as Rake receiver, and hence the post processing is required for MUD to clean up the estimated channel coefficients by eliminating the noise only coefficients. The adaptive post processing method is proposed in order to provide more accurate channel responses and the power level of the background noise and interferences at the cost of the negligible processing delay compared to the conventional method based on the threshold test with the threshold value relative to the noise variance. The simulations are performed in 3GPP-TDD mode environment. The results show that the noise estimation error of the proposed method is maximum
, which is much smaller than
maximum error of the conventional method.

The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 30, issue 5C, 2005, Pages 406~414
The necessity for a technique to protect intellectual property of a digital content has been increasing, especially for the image/video contents which are the most favorite because of their high information-intensive property. According to this demand, this paper proposed a digital watermarking algorithm, which is recognized as the most promising technique. This algorithm targets MPEG compression system and the watermarking process is to be performed during the compression process. It inserts watermark only in Y components of I-frames. Experimental results showed that the proposed method satisfied both imperceptibility and robustness against various attacks. The PSNR difference between the compressed images(the average compression ratio was about 27:1 with Y:Cb:Cr=4:2:0 color format for TM5-based compression) with and without watermarking was only 1.8dB (
). In each case that the resulting image after an attack was reusable the normalized correlation between the extracted watermark and the original one was above 0.8.

Passive RFID tag does not have its own power, so it has very poor computation abilities and it can deliver signals in very short range. From the facts, most RFID Tag security schemes assumed that the backward channel from tags to a reader is safe from eavesdropping. However, eavesdroppers near a tag can overhear message from a tag illegally. In this paper, we propose a method to protect the backward channel from eavesdropping by illegal readers. The proposed scheme can overcome the problems of conventional schemes such as randomized tree walking, which have been proposed to secure tag information in tree-walking algorithm as an anti-collision scheme for RFID tags. We showed the efficiency of our proposed method by using an analytical model, and it is also shown that the proposed method can provide the probability of eavesdropping in some standardized RFID tag system such as EPCglobal, ISO, uCode near to '0'.
