Lee, Sang-Hyun ; Yoo, Myung-Sik ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 649~658
Due to limited size and limited battery lifetime of sensor node, one has to address the power saving issue in wireless sensor network. The existing power saving algorithm based on data reuse was proposed for the cluster structured wireless sensor network. We state the problem of existing power saving algorithm and propose new power saving algorithm for tree structured wireless sensor network. The proposed algorithm reduces power consumption by buffering the sensed data at the selected relay node for its data lifetime. The optimum buffering node is selected so that the power saving gain is maximized and at the same time, power consumption among sensor nodes are equally distributed in the network. With computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional algorithm in terms of power saving gain.

Mobile Ad-hoc Network consists of mobile nodes without immobile base station. In mobile ad-hoc network, network cutting has occurred frequently in node because of energy restriction and frequent transfer of node. Therefore, it requires research for certain techniques that react softly in topology alteration in order to improve reliability of transmission path. This paper proposes path selection techniques to consider mobility of node that respond when search path using AOMDV routing protocol. As applying proposed techniques, We can improve reliability and reduce re-searching number of times caused by path cutting.
Network Mobility Support Using Router-based Binding Update Scheme in Hierarchical Mobile IP
Kim, Ju-Hyun ; Lee, Kyung-Geun ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 668~676
Hierarchical Mobile 1Pv6(HM1Pv6) have been proposed by IETF(Internet Engineering Task Force) beginning from Mobile 1Pv6 for mobility support in IP networks, however these researches relying on client based mobility support have not been drawn attention due to excessive consumption of wireless resources and long handover delay. In this paper, we propose the Router-based Binding Update(RBU) scheme to solve problems in existing client-based mobility support schemes. The router registers location information of mobile nodes through Neighbor Discovery protocol without additional codes for the RBU scheme to a terminal operated by existing HMlPv6. By using this the RBU scheme is designed so that it can support partial nupport based mobility and reduce handover latency rather than using HMIPv6. It is analysed and compared with existing HMIPv6 to verify efficiency of the RBU scheme. As a result, the RBU scheme has outperformed existing HMIPv6 by 15% in terms of macro handover delay especially when long delay on wireless links exists.

The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 677~685
There are a number of studies that propose transmission power control algorithms in wireless sensor networks. However, these algorithms have a lot of overhead in the initialization phase since a number of packets have to be transmitted to determine the optimal transmission power level. This paper proposes the transmission power control technique considering the shortest-path to minimize the hop-count without the occurrence of any power control messages. We applied the proposed technique on tree-based network component implemented on TinyOS. And we evaluated the performance including transmission energy and average network depth with 21 motes. Compared to before, the proposed technique reduces about 24.7% of the average electric current on transmitting. As a result of considering the shortest-path, the hop-count considering the shortest-path was about 41% less than a normal network.

Yoon, Won-Ju ; Chung, Sang-Hwa ; Park, Shin-Jun ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 686~693
In this paper, we propose an efficient tag sleep method utilizing empty time slots for improving the tag collection performance in active RFID systems. In the proposed tag sleep method, the reader detects the occurrence of empty time slots by carrier sensing and utilizes the wasted empty time slots to transmit sleep commands to the collected tags throughout the framed slotted aloha-based tag collection process, resulting in reducing the time required for tag collection. Via the simulation experiments, we evaluated the performance of the tag collection applied with the proposed tag sleep method, compared with that of the basic tag collection. The simulation results showed that the tag collection applied with the proposed tag sleep method could reduce the average tag collection time by 12.28%, 12.30%, and 13.31 %, for the framed slotted aloha with the fixed 128 time slots and 256 time slots, and the dynamic framed slotted aloha anticollision protocols, respectively.
Geographical Routing Scheme Considering Channel Condition in WSN
Sim, In-Bo ; Lee, Jai-Yong ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 694~702
Geographical routing protocol, where nodes only need local information exchange to make routing decisions, is a very efficient routing scheme for wireless sensor networks in scalability. However, pure geographical routing does not take account of wireless link condition. If wireless link condition is not considered, when the routing table is updated, the nodes with bad link conditions are updated in the routing table and can be chosen as the next hop. This brings out the retransmissions because of received packet's errors. Also, because of these retransmissions, additional power is consumed. In this paper, we propose geographical routing scheme considering wireless link condition, where reliable data transmission is made and the consumed energy is minimized.

Recently, we are using wireless system based on ZigBee technology. It solves a complicated space and frequency movement. Then, we had studied it for improved performance. So, we are must concerned about routing protocol for improvement of a weak point of physical feature. But many researchers are not focusiong on developing Routing Protocol. In this paper, we proposed improved routing protocol using AODV for wireless system based on ZigBee technology. And it is analyzed the simulation result which compare with original and improved AODV protocol based on ZigBee network.

Kim, Moon ; Moon, Tae-Wook ; Cho, Sung-Joon ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 710~720
The Future Generation Networks(FGNs) are proposed to integrate various heterogeneous access technologies, and further expected to support both vertical and seamless handovers. In this motivation, the IEEE 802.21 specifies Media Independent Handover(Mlli) services to enhance the mobile user experience by optimizing handovers between heterogeneous access networks. Additionally, Fast handover for MIPv6(FM1Pv6) is introduced to provide transparent host mobility and to improve handover performance by reducing handover delay as well. This paper focuses on the coordination of FMIPv6 and MIH, and introduces an enhanced mobility management framework suited for FGN. This novel framework replaces handover signaling messages used in wireless networks with novel MIH messages and local primitives. Moreover, Serving Access Router(SAR) performs most of handover processes instead of Mobile Node(MN). Therefore, the proposed mobility management framework reduces handover latency, packet loss, and signaling overhead significantly. We further evaluate the performance of the proposed framework by using both numerical analysis and network simulations.
Data Direction Aware Clustering Method in Sensor Networks
Jo, O-Hyoung ; Kwon, Tae-Wook ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 721~727
Wireless Sensor Networks(WSN) make use of low cost and energy constrained sensor nodes. Thus, reaching the successful execution of its tasks with low energy consumption is one of the most important issues. The limitation of existing hierarchical algorithms is that many times the data are transmitted to the opposite direction to the sink. In this paper, DDACM (Data Direction Aware Clustering Method) is proposed. In this method, the nearest node to the sink is elected as cluster head, and when its energy level reaches a threshold value, the cluster head is reelected. We also make a comparison with LEACH showing how this method can reduce the energy consumption minimizing the reverse direction data transmission.

Park, Ho-Hyun ; Choi, Hyun-Duk ; Woo, Mi-Ae ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 728~733
An ubiquitous environment has features like peer-to-peer and nomadic environments. Such features can be represented by peer-to-peer systems and mobile ad-hoc networks. P2P systems and MANETs share similar features, appealing for implementing P2P systems in MANET environment. However, if a P2P system designed for wired networks was applied to mobile ad-hoc environment, its performance was not good enough. Subsequently, this paper proposes a P2P system to improve performance using cross-layer design and the goodness of a node as a peer by using routing metric and P2P metric to choose favorable peers to connect. It also utilizes proactive approach for distributing peer information. The simulation results showed that the proposed system produced better performance in query success rate, query response time and energy consumption by reducing the routing path length.

Kim, Hyun-Ki ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 34, issue 7B, 2009, Pages 744~750
In this paper, the unified Markov modeling of hardware and software for AVTMR(AlI Voting Triple Modular Redundancy) system is proposed and the dependability is analyzed. In hardware case, a failure rate is fixed to no time varying parameter. But, in software case, failure rate is applied with time varying parameter. Especially, the dependability(Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) of software is analyzed with G-O/NHPP for Markov modeling. The dependability of single and AVTMR system is analyzed and simulated with a unified Markov modeling method, and the characteristic of each system is compared accroding to failure rate. This kind of fault tolerat system can be applied to an airplane and life critical system to meet the requirement for a specific requirement.
