The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 35, issue 2B, 2010, Pages 215~224
A container security device (CSD) monitors intrusions through the cargo door; it is a reduced function device that uses IEEE 802.15.4 with a beacon mode. However, in the beacon mode, the CSD consumes too much battery power in periodical idle listening and sensing trials. Moreover, the CSD cannot send the message to the CSD reader actively, and it makes big latency problem. Therefore, we propose a low-power CSD to reduce the unnecessary power consumption. The proposed CSD follows the requirements of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and reduces battery consumption through a power-efficient hardware design, a night-watch mechanism for low-power operation and low-power sensing to reduce unnecessary monitoring. And the CSD sends alert message to the CSD reader. Simulation results show that our CSD reduces battery consumption by over 70% through the night-watch mechanism and by approximately 80% through the low-power sensing. And the CSD can send the alert message to the remote CSD reader by over 94%.

Recently, the USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) technology is emerging as an aspect of digital convergence trends which is being rapidly evolving in the whole society. The technological feasibility for the various application services using the USN is researched in numerous industries, but, in the agricultural field, the market of USN application service, technology adoption and commercialization have been delayed. In the agricultural field, the ubiquitous technologies could lead to huge change in the conventional surroundings such as growth environment of livestock, crop cultivation and harvest. In this paper, to offer a integrated management, we construct a u-swinery(ubiquitous swinery) system which is consisted with USN environmental sensors to collect information from physical phenomenon such as luminance, relative humidity, temperature and ammonia gas. Numbers of CCTV were also installed to monitor inside and outside of the swinery. The u-swinery integrated management system can monitor and control the condition of swinery from remote sites. Furthermore, by gathering the cumulative environmental data from the system, the optimal growth condition for the livestock could be created.

The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 35, issue 2B, 2010, Pages 269~278
In the clustering protocol, lifetime of the cluster members radically decrease because frequency interference between clusters make every cluster member consume a lot of energy to maintain or increase its transmission rate. In this paper, we analyze the frequency interference among the clusters with the game theory which deals with resource bargaining problems between players, and present a rational power allocation strategy. Both the cases that each cluster tries to selfishly occupy and cooperatively share the resource are analyzed in terms of non-cooperative and cooperative games. In simulation, we compare the cooperative game with non-cooperative game in terms of the node lifetime.

RTLS used to track the location of object or person in real time. However, if there are a lot of tags and readers, the conventional single RTLS server may fail to estimate location of tags. And if the server cannot receive the tags signal due to pass-loss or NLOS from more than three readers, the server fail to estimate location of tags. In this paper, we propose a special reader which embeds RTLS location engine for distributed RTLS. And by using multi-directional antenna, alleviating multi-path effect and allowing estimate tag's location only using two readers. We also implement the system, we can reduce server packet 16times and get the all results of location estimate in single second. We achieved the location error within 1m.

Radio frequency identification(RFID) system can identify an object using wireless transmission. RFID applications are numerous and far reaching. The most interesting and widely used applications are supply chain management for companies. Currently, RFID tags must be detached or killed for security and privacy reasons when tagged objects are purchased. In this paper, we present a new architecture that transfers information about products from the electronic product code information services (EPCIS) server of a company to an individual's personal purchases management (PPM) server when products with RFID codes are sold. It solves the security and privacy issues without detaching the tag. Moreover, the PPM server described in this paper allows customers to handle the expiration dates, updates, location management, and group management of products.

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service is the convergence service of the telecommunication and broadcasting that provides various bidirectional multimedia contents by IPTV service subscribe's request through the high-speed internet. However, the proposed technologies current do not guarantee the security such as authentication between Set-Top-Box (STB) and the user mobile devices available IPTV service at home domain, and authentication of mobile user device at out of door. This paper proposes the authentication protocol for distributing content securely from STB to the users' mobile devices at home domain and authentication for network access and IPTV service access when the user's mobile device is moved out of the house. The proposed scheme using the proxy signature enables to distribute and protect securely the contents protected through an underlying Conditional Access System (CAS) without re-encrypting then that the existing scheme should employ. Then this protocol supports the authentication scheme to get service access authentication based on network access authentication using the signature, which the STB issued on behalf of the trust authority of IPTV service provider. Also the proposed authentication protocol reduces the total communication overhead and computation time comparing to the other authentication protocol.

The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 35, issue 2B, 2010, Pages 325~333
Most communication systems including Wibro use quasi-cyclic LDPC codes composed of circulants. However, it is very difficult to design quasi-cyclic(QC) LDPC codes with optimal degree distribution satisfying conditions on layered decoding and girth due to the restriction of the size of its base matrix. In this paper, we propose a good solution by introducing superposition matrices to QC LDPC codes. We derive the conditions on checking girth of QC LDPC codes with superposition matrices, and propose new decoder to support layered decoding both for original QC LDPC codes and their modifications with superposition matrices. Simulation results show considerable improvements to convergence speed and error-correcting performance of proposed scheme which adopts QC LDPC codes with superposition matrices.

Koo, Ja-Hon ; Chung, Kwang-Sue ;
The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 35, issue 2B, 2010, Pages 334~344
Recently, due to the prevalence of various mobile devices and broadband wireless networks, a significant interests and demands for multimedia streaming services over the Internet have been increasing. However, it is difficult to transmit continuous multimedia stream when mobile terminals are moving. Therefore, in order to deploy mobile IPTV service in the broadband wireless network, efficient wireless resource utilization and seamless QoE (Quality of Experience) offers to the users are an important issue. In this paper, we propose a network based adaptive streaming scheme, called MARC (Mobile Adaptive Rate Control), which controls the quality of the video and rate of the video based on the status of the wireless channel. The proposed scheme uses awareness information of the wireless channel status and controls transmitting streaming video which is suitable for the wireless channel status and mobile station location, in order to provide a seamless video playback for mobile environment in addition to improving the quality of a streaming service. The proposed MARC scheme alleviates the discontinuity of video playback and allocates suitable client buffer in broadband wireless network. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

The Journal of Korean Institute of Communications and Information Sciences, volume 35, issue 2B, 2010, Pages 345~351
It has been growing interests that convergence services of broadcasting and telecommunication services such as DMB 2.0 and Mobile IPTV etc. Unicast type is difficult to service broadcasting due to limits of capacity and poor receiving environments, WiBro supports broadcast service with MBS. MBS is transmission method that base stations belong to same the MBS zone transmit the all users who request broadcasting service. Terminals are received resources from all base station in the MBS zone and SINR can be improved because of macro diversity. If terminals are located at edge of the MBS zone, complement algorithm are needed beacause received SINR is very low. In this paper, MIMO STBC, Relay and FFR are introduced to improve the throughputs using high MCS. The basic simulation environment is assumed to be SISO. Transparent relay and FFR applicable on MBS are divided by SISO and MIMO STBC environment and evaluate the performance.
