An Analytical Study on Moment Response of Welded Steel Pipe for Loading Rate

This article aims to analytically research for influence of residual stresses on bending moment responses against welded steel pipes subjected to quasi -static or dynamic loadings. The residual stresses of the welded steel pipe are computed by three-dimensional welding simulation. The bending moment responses of the welded and seamless steel pipes are determined by using three-dimensional dynamic elastoplastic FE analysis as a function of loading rate. It is seen from analytical results that the welded steel pipe shows lower moment response comparing to the seamless steel pipe, and moment difference between seamless and welded steel pipes tends to decrease as loading rate increases.
Form-finding of Tensegrity Structures with constraints by using Force Method

This paper presents a new numerical method by using Singular Value Decomposition force method for form-finding of tensegrity structures with constraints. In order to maintain the tensegrity structures stable, state of self-equilibrium stress should be introduced. The existing force method has some advantages about form-finding of tensegrity structures. However, this method has complex formulation. In force density method, dummy members are required for form -finding of tensegrity structures with constraints. Therefore this study proposes new force method using Singular value decomposition. The proposed method is both having easy basic consept and simple computation than existing force method. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the efficiency and robustness in searching initial single integral feasible self-stress mode for tensegrity structures with constraints.
A Study on Structural Characteristics of Stone Masonry Wall Structure

It is hard to predict the mechanical characteristics of discontinuous stone masonry structures with the use of by the static analysis method, because of irregularity of face stones and also due to randomness of backfill materials. Inversely, one can estimate the mechanical characteristics by comparing the natural frequencies between measured from the field tests and computed from the analytical models. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness and confidence of the computational modeling method of ancient stone arch bridges in Korea and to find the factors influencing their dynamic characteristics. The results revealed that the rigidity of spandrel walls and backfill materials are the most important factors influencing the natural frequencies of stone arch bridges, which are the critical for the stability of the stone arch structure.
A Case Study on Using Interactive Media of Large Space Structure

Interactive media are applied to inner and outer space of small public space to enhance for the interaction between the spectator and works, also widely used in the exterior wall by LED and projector for advertisement. In the other hand, case studies of interactive media for large space have not less accomplished than those of buildings and public spaces. Thus, these studies analyzed 11 large structure examples by display, content, interface, and technology device by comparison of those cases of ordinary building public space. First interactive media for large space are found to be contents(39%), and next one is play(27%), advertisement(17%) and message(17%).
Vibration Control Performance Evaluation of Smart TMD for a Tilted Diagrid Tall Building

Recently, complex-shaped tall buildings represented by 3T(Twisted, Tapered, Tilted) are planed largely. A diagrid structural system is one of the most widely used structural system for complex-shaped tall buildings because of its structural efficiency and formativeness. Plans for tilted tall buildings are largely presented because of beauty of a sculpture and many of buildings use diagrid structural systems. Lateral displacements of tilted tall buildings are induced by not only lateral loads but also self weight. Therefore, reduction of lateral responses of tilted tall buildings is as important as typical tall buildings. In this study, a smart TMD is introduced to reduce seismic responses of tilted diagrid tall buildings and its control performance is evaluated. MR damper is employed for the smart TMD and ground-hook controller is used as a control algorithm for the smart TMD. 100-story tall building is used as an example structure. Control performances of uncontrolled case, controlled case with TMD and controlled case with smart TMD are compared and investigated. Numerical simulation has shown that smart TMD presented good control performance for displacement response but acceleration response was not controlled well.
A Comparative Analysis of Terrorism Threat Level of Domestic Tall Buildings and General Buildings through Rapid Visual Screening

As the scope of the target of terrorism is recently extending, the danger of domestic terroristic attacks is increasing constantly, and the form of terrorism is changing from hard targets such as significant facilities of the country into soft target of multi-complex buildings such as skyscrapers. Accordingly this study analyzes the terrorism threat level on skyscrapers by comparing the assessment results of the terrorism threat level on skyscrapers and high-rise buildings with the assessment results of the terrorism threat level on low-rise buildings through fema 455 - Rapid Visual Screening. As a result, skyscrapers and high-rise buildings are relatively higher threat rating than consequences and vulnerability rating. This is caused by the fact that the terrorism threat level on skyscrapers is high due to their residents and their national or regional symbolism and visibility
Evaluation of Material Test for the Design of Artistic Column Using Glass Reinforced Plastic

Glass Reinforced Plastic(GRP) shows very high strength, comparing to the lightness of material. And the effect of transparency or semitransparency can be obtained by this material. However, due to the hand laminating for the GRP, the material properties can not be credible. Thus, the material test of GRP must be performed before the structural design. In this paper, material tests were performed for the design of the artistic column with 30m high and 4mm thickness. And the results of tests could be compared with DIN to evaluate the material properties for the application on the column.
Investigation of Adaptability of Smart Base Isolation System for Spacial Structures in Regions of Low-to-Moderate Seismicity

To date, a smart base isolation system has been developed in high seismicity region such as Japan, USA etc. Smart base isolation systems developed for structures in high seismicity region cannot directly applied to structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity such as Korea. Therefore, problems that occur by applying the smart base isolation system developed for the structures in high seismicity region to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity have been investigated in this study. To this end, a spacial arch structure was used as an example structure and MR dampers and low damping elastomeric bearings were used to compose a smart base isolation system. Artificial earthquakes were used for ground motions in regions of high and low-to-moderate seismicity. Based on numerical simulation results, it has been known that the capacity of smart base isolation system for the regions of low-to-moderate seismicity should be carefully designed because the base isolation effects of the smart base isolation system for high seismicity region is deteriorated when it is applied to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity.
