Analysis of Distribution Situation and Management System of Thesis and Dissertations
Yoon, Hee-Yoon ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 2, 2004, Pages 1~40
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.2.001
Theses and dissertations are works embodying results of original research on a subject and substantiating a particular point of view by usually graduate students, as a degree requirement. Most theses and dissertations are not controlled by commercial publishing interests, and thus are not obtained in book-form by most libraries. Due to their lack of physical and ready availability and information about the contents, theses and dissertations have been extremely underutilized sources of information without distinction of nations. The goal of this paper is to provide the current informations on the distribution and management systems of theses and dissertations in Foreign and Korea. The findings of this study will provide the basis for developing an standardized management model of theses and dissertations that meets the needs of researchers, students, and librarians in Korea.
Elevating Utilization Efficiency through the Multimedia Database Construction of Accompanying Materials
Lee, Ju-Hyun ; Lee, Eung-Bong ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 2, 2004, Pages 41~55
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.2.041
This study is expected to discuss some methods regarding the uplift of user's use convenience and the efficiency of material management by constructing the multimedia database through the digitalization of the especial audiotape-typed materials among accompanying materials. In order to do that, this paper dealt with the present management conditions of accompanying materials, the sorts of audio data formats, data format transformation, the methods of administration and utilization, etc. And this paper also presented the expected effect and problems caused by multimedia databases construction of accompanying materials.
The Comparative Study on the Methodologies of Building Ontology toward Semantic Web
Kim, Eun-Kyong ; Nam, Young-Joon ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 2, 2004, Pages 57~85
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.2.057
This is the comparative study about analyzing the methodologies of building ontology with IEEE Standard 1074-1997. The methodologies are chosen to be analyzed. They are OTK, CommanKADS, ONIONS and Noy & McGuinness's Ontology Development 101. On the basis of analyzing, the ontology development process is proposed after the strong points of four methodologies are accepted but the weak points of them are supplemented. The sixth development steps are following: 1) Conducting the feasibility study about ontology building as the pre-development process 2) Setting up the purpose of the ontology development as the starting point of the building 3) Considering the integration of the existing ontologies for the knowledge reuse 4) Constructing the ontology by defining the concepts and relations 5) Evaluating and testing the ontology for the completeness 6) Containing the ontology maintenance for the sustainable use.
A Study on Licensing of the Electronic Resource Collections in Korean Universities
Han, Hye-Young ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 2, 2004, Pages 87~105
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.2.087
In the print information world, purchasing books in a library includes rights both to own them and to access to them. In an information world, access to electronic resources often takes place within the confines of a license that defines appropriate use over a specified period of time. Most of these electronic resources are governed by license agreements. This paper describes recent licensing issues which remain unresolved in the area of business model, archive, and fair use and also investigates formal evaluation criteria for developing electronic resources in a library. This study provides licensing principles and considerations for managing the licensing of electronic resources.
