A study on the Establishment of Integrated National Knowledge and Information Network Infrastructure for Human Resource Development
Jeong, Dong-Yeoul ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 3, 2004, Pages 1~28
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.3.001
The purpose of this paper is to suggest guidelines for building up an integrated information network(IIN) model that enable to enhance production, flow and use of knowledge and information. The IIN consists of five areas of key infrastructure, such as, education, R&D, labor market, school-industry cooperation, and lifelong education information infrastructure. Based on the analysis of current situations and problems of each information infrastructure, this paper raises variety of issues and solution for the IIN model. Directions for building up the IIN includes both information base infrastructure and information support infrastructure.
Comparative analysis of group cognizance regarding application of copyright laws in library
Kim, Po-Ok ; Lee, Jin-Suk ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 3, 2004, Pages 29~50
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.3.029
This study, considering the many disputes in today's society centered around copyrights, aimed at analyzing and investigating the scope of application for copyright laws in library, whether where is a reach or not, and also the procedures and cognitive degrees in copying and transmission of copyrights materials. Especially the usage of the digital resources built by major domestic libraries have been looked at, and how they reveal the cognitive degree of copyright laws toward various social stratums have been analyzed. Research subjects in each social stratum were firstly classified, which centered around university library users, authors as well as librarians in each university library public access post, then the difference of understanding toward copyright laws between each of these 3 groups was analyzed, and also at the same time the problems in usage authorization procedures of copyrighted materials in library were analyzed. so that the solutions to such problems can be found.
The Recent Trend of ISO/TC46 and International Standard Numbers
Kim, Jeong-Hyun ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 3, 2004, Pages 51~74
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.3.051
ISO/TC46 is the International Organization for Standardization of practices relating to libraries, documentation and information centers, indexing and abstracting services, archives, information science and publishing. This study analyzes current trend of ISO/TC46 and the 4 subcommittees, considering recent matters in regard with identification and description of information resources: ISBN, ISSN, ISMN, ISRN, ISRC, ISAN, ISTC, etc. This research discusses also the question of how international standard numbers system are managed: endowment identifying numbers for electronic resources, component parts, and works.
A Structure of University Library for Ubiquitous Environment
Hong, Mi-Ra ; Moon, Sung-Been ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 3, 2004, Pages 75~107
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.3.075
The concept of "ubiquitous", which has been recently discussed in several industries, implies accessing a network using a computer from anywhere at anytime. The ubiquitous technology has been widely researched for distribution, construction, and medical treatments. Now, it has extended its application to libraries. The ubiquitous technology currently applied to a number of national libraries calls for a systematic study of an ubiquitous library. This thesis aims at presenting a model of introducing the ubiquitous technology to university libraries.
A Preliminary Study on Interchange of Science and Technology Information through Harmonization of Classification Schemes
Hong, Sung-Wha ; Seo, Tae-Sul ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 3, 2004, Pages 109~123
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.3.109
The problem of semantic interoperability in science and technology information is frequently raised. Well-established classification scheme will be used as a tool to interchange information between different databases without semantic inconsistency. However, there is still a practical barrier due to different classification schemes each database adopts. Accordingly, it is urgent to harmonize or reconcile those classifications with each other. This paper aims to solve semantic inconsistencies occurred when interchanging information between databases having different classification schemes, the Standard National Sci-Tech Classification and the Standard KISTI Classification. For the purpose a conceptual analysis of science and technology are performed and five consistency/inconsistency types are analyzed based on some examples.
Designing Hierarchical User Interface Model for Browsing the Knowledge Structure of a Single Document Using MDS
Han, Seung-Hee ; Lee, Jae-Yun ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 3, 2004, Pages 125~138
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.3.125
The purpose of this study is to propose a hierarchical user interfaces for browsing the knowledge structure of a single document. To generate the hierarchical knowledge structure, hierarchical term clustering and cluster representative term selection were performed with a single thesis in information science field, and the result was applied to design the interfaces which browse a single document hierarchically using multidimensional scaling. The interfaces can be applied to develop the user-friendly information retrieval system.
A Study on the OAI based Open Digital Library
Lee, Sang-Gi ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 35, issue 3, 2004, Pages 139~159
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2004.35.3.139
Digital library technology is facing issues such as interoperability, content extension, and the need for a more efficient management environment. A system that is based on standardization and interoperability is required to resolve these issues. Open Digital Library is the system for the next generation that resolves the above problems. We have conducted some research on issues such as OAI and OAI-PMH, which are the basic knowledge behind the Open Digital Library technology and also investigated the Open Digital Library framework, cases of study and implementation of this technology. Finally, we have made some suggestions on the extendability of Open Digital Library technology using the standardized technologies.
