A Study on User-Generated Metadata
Lee, Jae-Yun ; Hwang, Hye-Kyong ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 37, issue 3, 2006, Pages 1~24
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2006.37.3.001
As the amount of information through growing Internet has dramatically increased recently, information professions generated metadata has been reached the limits of their role. Based on the value of information depends on the user, user generated metadata is a growing paradigm in the field of information organization today. This paper firstly introduces the concepts of user-generted metadata, and then examines the cases of user annotation and user tagging. Finally we discuss the effects and implications of user-generated metadata on the development of digital libraries.
Strategies for Import and Development of Foreign Scholarly Journals in Korea (II)
Yoon, Hee-Yoon ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 37, issue 3, 2006, Pages 25~59
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2006.37.3.025
The primary purpose of this paper is to suggest the import and development models of foreign scholarly journals in Korea. In the context of the emerging knowledged-based economy or knowledge society, innovations and capacity of the national information system to collect, disseminate, and preserve the most important STM journals are becoming increasingly fundamental determinants of national prosperity and survival. It is essential that the scholarly or scientific communication system must provide the cost-effectiveness access to scholarly journals in support of research and development in Korea.
Building Thesaurus for Science & Technology Domain Using Facets and Its Application to Inference Services
Hwang, Soon-Hee ; Jung, Han-Min ; Sung, Won-Kyung ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 37, issue 3, 2006, Pages 61~84
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2006.37.3.061
In this paper, we proposed one of the methods for building thesaurus in Science & Technology domain and investigated its applicability as an inference service based on ontology. There exist as many building methods for thesaurus as its role and function, and actually many thesauri capable of ensuring the accuracy and efficiency in information search are being built by many experts. After examining the previous studies related to the principles of building thesaurus and relevant concept "facet", we focused on its characteristics and applied it to building thesaurus. The facet is classified into 2 categories, conceptual facet and relational facet. The latter contains 3 subcategories: category relational facet, attribute relational facet and thematic relational facet. The thesaurus for Science & Technology domain using facets can be applied as a web-based inference service. As a result, the three types of inference service, COP(Communities of Practice), Researcher Tracing and Research Map are provided by means of ontology, and can be applied for the Query Expansion.
A Renovation Strategy of Digital Library Reference Information Service
Chung, Jin-Sik ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 37, issue 3, 2006, Pages 85~97
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2006.37.3.085
In a Digital Age contents are comprized of knowledge and information. Also distinction between the sinner and loser is very clear thus only those who can rise up to challenge of changes can become the strong and a principal player. In this study this author presented a model for forecasting information service program(FISP) which is devised for the purpose of innovation of service pattern related to providing information which is ultimate goal of a library. This model is an innovative strategy escaping boldly from negative and inactive information service pattern known in analog age. Through this model this author attempted to outline methodology for heightening ideal of professional librarians and for assuring success in organizational system.
A Study on Management Strategy of Special Libraries in Digital Environment : on the Basis of Special Libraries in the field of Science and Technology
Hwang, Jae-Young ; Lee, Eung-Bong ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 37, issue 3, 2006, Pages 99~115
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2006.37.3.099
The purpose of this study is to build new management strategy of special libraries in the field of science and technologies. Though information service of digital libraries were developed very much due to IT technologies, management condition of special libraries is getting more worse. Immediate cause of this problem is absence of management strategies which were veiled by IT panacea. In order to overcome this problem, this study looks into the internal and external environment change which are surrounded by special libraries. And also examined procedures and method of environment analysis which is needed to build management strategies. As the result of research, this study analyze internal and external environment by SWOT analysis method, and finally propose new management strategies.
A Study on Building System of Association Technology Information Management & Dissemination
Kim, Byung-Kyu ; Kang, Mu-Yeong ; Choi, Seon-Heui ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 37, issue 3, 2006, Pages 117~137
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2006.37.3.117
Science and technology association is producing huge amount of information through the academic activities related in industrial technology between the members and becoming major provider of industrial technology information. But the infrastructure in its individual institute of institution is very poor, which makes systematic management and service unavailable. So, KISTI developed the management and logistics system collecting and processing various technical information produced by institutes and managing as well as distributing through the web. We studied cases matched with requirements of institution and opted for the modeling, using web based application and information retrieval system. Finally, the members of the institution as well as unregistered users can access to the technical reports database easily and quickly. We are planning to extend the range of target institutes and make a progress the system to high functional level.
A Study on Constructing of Photographic Digital Archive : Focusing on the Photographs of Korean Democratization Movements
Kim, Myoung-Hun ; Hyun, Jong-Chul ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 37, issue 3, 2006, Pages 139~163
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2006.37.3.139
This article analyze a constructing process of photographic digital archive based on photographs of korean democratization movements. After photographic digital archive defines as integrated systems in which photographic digital objects collect, classify, describe, preserve and access, this article explains metadata elements and classification schema reflecting a special quality of photograph. Especially, this article presents dynamic classification structure using subject keywords. After all, this method provides integrity and interrelationship with photographes which promote usability of photographic digital objects.
