A Study on Digital Format Selection Strategies for a Library
Seo, Tae-Sul ; Chang, Durk-Hyun ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 1~21
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.001
In this paper, typical types of digital format were defined and digital format selection guidelines of US's NISO(National Information Standards Organization) and LC(Library of Congress) and Denmark's The State and University Library and the Royal Library were introduced. Five sustainability factors and quality and functionality factors were raised through analysing the three sample guidelines. The sustainability factors include descriptive, independency, consistency, widely adopted, and quality. Thus, digital format selection strategies for a library were developed.

Lee, Yong-Jae ; Woo, Sang-Hee ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 49~71
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.049
This study aims to develop more user-oriented information literacy education for medical libraries in Korea. For this purpose, we benchmarked some advanced models in and out of Korea, and examined a case of C medical library which is medium size in Korea. Especially, we looked into the actual condition of information literacy education of C medical library and the information need of its users. We suggested some ideas to construct the programs for information literacy education of medical libraries in Korea. Especially, we proposed some considerations, contents and flow for the programs. The results of this study can be useful references whenever each medical library in Korea will start or make up for its information literacy program.
An Analysis of Economic Effect of National Knowledge Information System Development
Park, Sung-Uk ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 73~94
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.073
The science & technology information is core point of the knowledge based society which will accomplish the role which economic development is lead. Simultaneously, Korea will jump at powerful country of knowledge information. But, There is not analysis about affects in the economic growth and various economic structure which follows in national knowledge information system development. This research analyses the economic ripple effects, in terms of production inducement effect, added value inducement effect, import inducement effect, labor inducement effect, of national knowledge information system development in KISTI from 2001 to 2008, using an input-output analysis of the bank of Korea(2007). It also examines economic propriety using an benefit-cost analysis for national knowledge information system development.
Identification of Emerging Research at the national level: Scientometric Approach using Scopus
Yeo, Woon-Dong ; Sohn, Eun-Soo ; Jung, Eui-Seob ; Lee, Chang-Hoan ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 95~113
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.095
In todays environment in which scientific technologies are changing very fast than ever, companies have to monitor and search emerging technologies to gain competitiveness. Actually many nations try to do that. Most of them use Dephi approach based on experts review as a searching method. But experts review has been criticised for probability of inclination and its derivative problems in the sense that it is accomplished only by expert's subjectivity. To overcome such problems, we used Scientometric Method for identifying emerging technology that had been done by Delphi as a rule. We made three particular efforts in order to improve the Quality of the result. Firstly, we selected one alternative database between SCI and Scopus hoping to see evenly-distributing results in wide fields on the front burner. Secondly we used Fractional citation counting in counting citation number in the stage of linear regression analysis. Lastly, we verified Scientometric result with experts opinions to minimize probable errors in a Scientometric research. As a result, we derived 290 emerging technologies from Scientometric analysis with Scopus Database, and visualized them on 2-dimension map with data mining system named KnowledgeMatrix which was developed by KISTI.
An Analysis of Mobile Web 2.0 as a Information Convergence Technology for Ubiquitous Library Application
Han, Seung-Hee ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 115~142
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.115
Convergence is an important concept for driving our society to be ubiquitous. The objectives of this paper are to conceptualize information convergence, and to analyze its mechanisms from the view of ubiquitous library circumstances. Further, this paper suggests mobile Web 2.0 as a library supporting technology for information convergence and some kinds of mobile based library user services using mobile Web 2.0 applications.
Element Technologies for Implementation of Mobile Information Service
Kim, Sung-Won ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 143~161
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.143
As the need for immediate access to the required information has increased in today's busy daily life, information service providers' capability of providing service whenever and wherever possible has become a critical element of improving service quality. Naturally, the demand and supply for mobile information service has rapidly increased since it is an ultimate option of satisfying information needs without temporal and special constraints. This paper examines the issues of system implementation and information service provision using mobile communication network and mobile handset as a tool of information access. First, it examines overall conditions of mobile information service environment, and then explores the general components required for the implementation of mobile information service, including contents, network, platform, and use environment.
A Relation Analysis between NDSL User Queries and Technical Terms
Kang, Nam-Gyu ; Cho, Min-Hee ; Kwon, Oh-Seok ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 163~177
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.163
In this paper, we analyzed the relationship between user query keywords that is used to search NDSL and technical terms extracted from NDSL journals. For the analysis, we extracted about 833,000 query keywords from NDSL search logs during nearly 17 months and approximately 41,000,000 technical terms from NDSL, INSPEC, FSTA journals. And we used only the English noun phrase in extracted those and then we did an experiment on analysis of equality, relationship analysis and frequency analysis.
The Institutional Repository Development and Revitalization Methods in Korea - Focused on the KAIST's KOASAS -
Lee, Jae-Min ; Son, Chung-Ki ; Lee, Mi-Young ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 179~204
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.179
Researchers' performances have been evaluated by contributing to the academic journals officially, and academic journals expanded both quantitatively and qualitatively since academic societies, publishers, and universities has concentrated on publishing journals. Recently, access and usage of academic information was restricted due to commercialization strategies and sudden rising of prices, and against this situation, OA movement came out arguing that academic information should be open to everyone freely. This article studies the case of KOASAS which is based on DSpace, one of the typical institutional repositories, and intends to show up the necessity to construct repositories in institutions universities and suggest the method to make full use of repositories.
A Study on the Utilization of the Technology Tree as a Strategic Technology Information Repository - Focused on the Tech-Tree and TRM Integration -
Lee, Won-Il ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 39, issue 3, 2008, Pages 205~220
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2008.39.3.205
This research focused on the major determinants for the strategic utilization of technology tree as a strategic technology information repository after the adoption of the technology tree in the R&D intensive organization. The study was performed based on both theoretical study and qualitative case study approaches. The result is as follows; for the strategic utilization of the technology tree for the information repository, it should be the market base and be closely related with the technology roadmap. In terms of the needs of times, this study regarding the strategic utilization of technology tree as a strategic technology information repository and as a s strategic supplement for technology roadmap is anticipated to be a good reference for the R&D-oriented organizations and technology-related studies in coming years.
