A Webometric Study on Scholarly Communication Between the Science and Technology Web Spaces of Korea and Japan
Kim, Ja-Euy ; Chung, Young-Mee ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 40, issue 2, 2009, Pages 1~24
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2009.40.2.001
This study explored the scientific web spaces of Korea and Japan by applying webmetric and social network analysis techniques with the aim of ascertaining international scholarly communication characteristics between the two countries. In general, more links were generated from the Korean scientific web sites to the Japanese sites than those from the opposite direction, thus implying a higher usage of Japanese scientific information on the web in Korean sites. In addition, university sites in the two countries were highly linked on the web revealing the most active institutions in scholarly communication were the universities. Based on the link analysis, the study also indicated which country was more dependent on the other in scholarly communication in specific scientific fields.
A Study on Service of Certified e-Document Authority System
Nam, Tae-Woo ; Kim, Eun-Jeong ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 40, issue 2, 2009, Pages 25~45
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2009.40.2.025
This study deals with a certified e-document authority system to securely archive e-documents by a government authorized third party. For this study, I have looked at three cases of certified e-document authority systems and compared then with the similar cases in the USA and Japan. In my conclusion, I suggest four ideas to improve the service of certified e-document authority system. First, the company providing the certified e-document authority system needs to expand to special services. Second, they need to concentrate on subject area of their business. Third, they should provide a consulting service for business archives with business customers. Finally, they can support additional services like document risk management and other digital contents archiving.
Factor Analysis of User`s Perceptions Regarding the Public Libraries Service Quality
Oh, Dong-Geun ; Lim, Young-Kyu ; Yeo, Ji-Suk ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 40, issue 2, 2009, Pages 47~70
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2009.40.2.047
This study is a exploratory research to develop standard measurement for service quality of public libraries through extracting common factors for them. It suggests that service quality of public libraries can be divided into three primary dimensions interaction of personnel, library resources and programs, physical environment and facilities and each dimensions be several sub-dimensions. It also suggests a third-order factor mode for public libraries` service quality based on the above dimensions and testifies it through exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis.
Investigating the End-User Tagging Behavior and its Implications in Flickr
Kim, Hyun-Hee ; Kim, Min-Kyung ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 40, issue 2, 2009, Pages 71~94
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2009.40.2.071
Indexing images using traditional indexing methods like taxonomy is not always efficient because of its visual content. This study examined how to apply folksonomies to image retrieval. To do this, first, we developed a category model for image tags found in Flickr. The model includes five categories and seventeen subcategories. Second, in order to evaluate the usefulness of the model to represent the various image tags as well as to investigate the end-user tagging behavior, three researchers classified the sampled image tags(141 most popular tags, 105 tags on three individual tag clouds and 3,848 image tags assigned on 156 images) according to the model. Finally, based on the research results, we proposed three methods for efficient image retrieval: extending folksonomies by combining them with ontologies; improving image retrieval efficiency using visual content and folksonomies; and updating taxonomy using folksonomies.
Exploration of Hierarchical Techniques for Clustering Korean Author Names
Kang, In-Su ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 40, issue 2, 2009, Pages 95~115
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2009.40.2.095
Author resolution is to disambiguate same-name author occurrences into real individuals. For this, pair-wise author similarities are computed for author name entities, and then clustering is performed. So far, many studies have employed hierarchical clustering techniques for author disambiguation. However, various hierarchical clustering methods have not been sufficiently investigated. This study covers an empirical evaluation and analysis of hierarchical clustering applied to Korean author resolution, using multiple distance functions such as Dice coefficient, Cosine similarity, Euclidean distance, Jaccard coefficient, Pearson correlation coefficient.
Implementing Multicast Service on College Campus
Kim, Sung-Won ;
Journal of Information Management, volume 40, issue 2, 2009, Pages 117~134
DOI : 10.1633/JIM.2009.40.2.117
Most of the colleges run their own broadcasting stations. They provide diverse types of content, and nowadays many colleges even provide video content. This paper deals with the concept of multicast service as a solution to provide efficient broadcasting service on the college campus. For this purpose, it examines concept and characteristics of the multicast service. It also reviews the actually case of such service provided by S college in Seoul, focusing on its platform, major functions, and scenario. I expect what`s discussed in this paper contribute to effective implementing and operating of a college broadcasting service. Also, multicast service introduced in this paper is applicable to the various organizational environment such as private companies and institutions as well as colleges.
