An Effective Application of AE Technique for the Detection of Defects in Steel Girder Bridges

In this study, an effective application method of AE technique for the detection of fatigue crack in multi-girder steel bridges has been proposed. The applicability has been examined through the laboratory works with bridge model. The proposed analytical method which evaluates the remaining fatigue lives of structural members may improve the rational determination of the priority of inspection for structural members assuming to have fatigue cracks. Laboratory tests for the application of AE technique to steel girder bridges show that the frequency bands of traffic noise are in the range between 10 show that the frequency bands of traffic noise are in the range between 100~200 kHz and the AE signal raised from fatigue cracks is concentrated around 400~500 kHz. Therefore. R30 sensor is proved to be the most suitable for the detection of cracks in steel girder bridges. A linear proportionality between the crack propagation and the frequency of AE signals has been obtained. In addition, an economic and effective source location method for steel girder bridges was studied through experiments.
Slip Behavior of Friction Type High-Tension Bolted Joints with Oversize Hole

In field fabrication of steel members, the oversize hole is frequently required due to reaming and mismatching. But, there are no provisions and investigations about oversize hole in the Korean specifications. So, in this study, the tension test of friction type high-tention bolted joints is performed with parameters of bolt hole size, surface treatment and tightening force, and investigate the effect of slip behavior with those parameters. From the results, the enough tightening force is needed to obtain some degree slip load in shot blast treatment case, although tightening force is reduced somewhat, it is no problem to guarantee slip load in zincrich primer case. The slip behavior of joints with oversize hole(26mm) is similar to the slip behavior of joints with hole of nominal size.
An Experimental and Analytical Study on the Impact Factors of Two-Span Continuous Plate Girder Bridge Due to Road Surface Roughness and Bump

The prediction of the dynamic response of a bridge resulting from passing vehicles across the span is a significant problem in bridge design. In this paper. the static and dynamic experiments are performed to understand the dynamic behavior of an actual two-span steel plate girder bridge. The road surface roughness of the roadway and bridge deck is directly measured by Intelligent Total Station. Numerical scheme to obtain the dynamic responses of the bridges in consideration of measuring road surface roughness and 3-D vehicle model is also presented. The bridge and vehicle are modeled as 3-D bridge and vehicle model, respectively. The main girder and concrete deck are modeled as beam and shell elements, respectively and rigid link is used for the structure between main girder and concrete deck. Bridge-vehicle interaction equations are derived and the impact factors of the responses for different vehicle speeds are calculated and compared with those predicted by several foreign specifications.

Undamped Dynamic Response of Anisotropic Laminated Composite Plates and Shell Structures using a Higher-order Shear Deformation Theory

This paper will expand the third-order shear deformation theory by the double-Fourier series and reduce to the solution of a system of ordinary differential equations in time, which are integrated numerically using Newmark's direct integration method and clarify the undamped dynamic responses for the cross-ply and antisymmetric angle-ply laminated composite plates and shells with simply supported boundary condition. Numerical results for deflections are presented showing the effect of side-to-thickness ratio, aspect ratio, material anisotropy, and lamination scheme.
A Study on the Structural Behavior of the Composite Slab with New-Shaped Deckplate

The objective of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of the composite slabs with the new metal deckplate. The new deckplate can be used as structural member with topping concrete. So several experiments of this structural test and the fire resistance test were done. From this experiments. slabs with new metal deckpklate were verified as composite slabs. In this paper, this verifications were compared with the international design methods. For experiment. 49 specimens were made. the main parameters are deckplate thickness (1.2mm. 1.6mm) depth of topping concrete(85mm. 90mm). support condition(simple, 2-span), shear reinforcment(studs), span(2.7m, 3.0m, 3.3m. 3.6m. 3.9m) and shear span(L/3, L/4, L/7). We analyzed the structural behavior of composite slab throughout the moment-curvature relationship which is obtained with the program using the computer language. Turbo C. From this development for slab system, the reinforced concrete or steel structure building may be easy, economical for construction, And informations about the structural behavior of composite slabs will be utilized to established korea standard.
A Study on the Design of Shear Connector of Continuous Composite Bridge

In designing short to medium-span bridges, continuous composite bridges are becoming popular due to their advantages. However, if the concrete slab in continuous composite bridge is not prestressed, negative moment occurs in the mid-support and creates problems such as cracks in the concrete slab. Therefore. it must be considered in design. Two methods of arrangement of shear connectors were conducted using finite element elastic plastic analysis. Partial interaction theory was introduced and an analytical solution based on this theory was derived. The differences in the degree of interaction were investigated using analytical solutions and finite element analyses of simple composite beam and continuous composite beams. The results of the analyses were used to determine the advantage and disadvantages as well as any precaution when necessary using partial composite during actual design and construction.
Study on Fatigue Behavior and Rehabilitation of Stringer with Coped Section(I) -Experimental Study on Static and Fatigue Behavior-

This study encompasses the performance of static and fatigue test for the 8 large scale test specimens to clarify the fatigue behavior of coped stringer and the effect of the repair and strengthening on the damaged stringer of the floor system in steel railway bridges. For the purpose of the research, the actual stress wave for the existing bridge was measured, the basic stress range frequency histogram was made and the equivalent stress range was calculated. Using the result from the equivalent stress range made by adjusting the stress range, the static and fatigue test was carried out by identifying the previous rehabilitation and after. As the result of the static tests, it was revealed that the level of local stress under the S1 specimen test of the real equivalent stress range was similar to tensile strength of the test material, and it was consistent with the requirement of the initiation condition of the fatigue crack. Through the various rehabilitation methods to the damaged specimens, the effects of the repair and reinforcement were analyzed. According to the results of the repair of effect, bolting the high tension bolt over the stop hole was confirmed to be more adequate method than drilling only stop hole to delay the fatigue crack growth. Futhermore, in case of the stringer subjected by bending moment, the reinforcement over the upper flange side was determined to be a useful strengthening method, and the reinforcement to the web of the stringer was not appropriate to accomodate as a adequate strengthening method. Also it was confirmed that the category of the fatigue design for the coped stringer met with the category E specified on the fatigue design criteria of the Highway Standard Specification in Korea.
Behavior of Concrete-Filled Square Steel Tubular Column-H Beam Connections with Reinforced bars

The objective of this study is to investigate the structural behavior of concrete-filled steel tubular column to H-beam connections with reinforced bar. As a preliminary test, simple tensile test on the column to H-beam connections stiffened were conducted. The parameters of tensile test are the diameters of each rebars. The simple tensile test were conducted to 5 kinds of specimens. Estimating the load. displacement and strain for specimens, the result of tensile test were compared with the results of main test. On the basis of simple tensile test, tests are conducted to montonic and cyclic loading column to H-beam connections with the same diameters of rebars. Specimens of 5 are made for monotonic and cyclic loading test. In analysis, estimating the yielding strength and maximum strength of specimens on the basis of yield line theory, strength formula of beam-to column connections with concrete-filled steel tubular column was suggested.
The Beam-Column Strength of Concrete Filled Tubes

The objective of this paper is to suggest formula of Concrete Filled Tube Beam-Column members maximum strength by using of numerical analysis and tests. The numerical analysis results are compared with test results for evaluating numerical analysis method. The formula of Limit State Design of Architectural Institute of KOREA is used for basic form of suggestion formula. In order to suggest formula, two methods are used. One is to use the coefficient, and the other is to use the amplified factor of material strength. The formula by two methods are compared with numerical analysis results.
The Kinematics of Damage for Elasto-Plastic Large Deformation

In this paper the kinematics of damage for finite strain, elasto-plastic deformation is introduced using the fourth-order damage effect tensor through the concept of the effective stress within the framework of continuum damage mechanics. In the absence of the kinematic description of damage deformation leads one to adopt one of the following two different hypotheses for the small deformation problems. One uses either the hypothesis of strain equivalence or the hypotheses of energy equivalence in order to characterize the damage of the material. The proposed approach in this work provides a general description of kinematics of damage applicable to finite strains. This is accomplished by directly considering the kinematics of the deformation field and furthermore it is not confined to small strains as in the case of the strain equivalence or the strain equivalence approaches. In this work, the damage is described kinematically in both the elastic domain and plastic domain using the fourth order damage effect tensor which is a function of the second-order damage tensor. The damage effect tensor is explicitly characterized in terms of a kinematic measurure of damage through a second-order damage tensor. Two kinds of second-order damage tensor representations are used in this work with respect to two reference configurations.
A Study on the Characteristics of High-Tension Bolted Joints' Behavior due to Surface Condition

In this study, the static and the fatigue tests were performed with high tension bolted joints, of which the surfaces were spread with inorganic zinc-primer after shot-blast, and milling surface, and steel-natural surface, difference of friction surface condition were examined by comparing the esults of tests. From the result of synthetical investigation of this study. it is proper that using the torque management method in order to introduce design axial force to blots, and the provision of specifications that initial axial forces must be 110% of design axial forces is proper. Decreasing ratio of axial forces to initial force is proportional to common lorgarithms of time progress, it converge constant value after 20 hours, and decreasing ratio is little related to the roughness of friction surface. Sliding coefficient of milling, spreading inorganic zinc-primer, just producting is great in order and sliding forces are dependent on the applied axial forces, but if the applied axial forces are great, sliding coefficient become small by a loss of roughness. So it is confirmed that relation between the applied axial forces and the sliding forces are not proportional linearly. From the result of estimation on fatigue strength, all specimens satisfy the specifications with B-grade and milling surface is lower than the others about 14% in fatigue strength because in milling surface lose the function of friction-types joints at lower number of cycles. From the result of eximination for the distribution area of compressive force, friction area near to inside bolt is wider in the direction of stress than near to outside. It is guessed that this situation occurs because outside bolts firstly change from the friction connection to the bearing connection.
The Prediction of Temperature in Composite Box Girder Bridges

The paper describes a theoretical model for the prediction of bridge temperatures from meteorological data measured at bridge site and local meteorological center together with existing finite element heat transfer theory and solar radiation transfer theory to determine the time dependent temperature distribution of bridge. In this analytical model, the most adequate equation for the calculation of solar radiation on the bridge surface, which is dominant in day time is described based on the results of several experimental studies for the solar energy. The validity of this model is tested against field data obtained from long term experimental program on Sadang Viaduct in Seoul. Also, this paper describes the linear correlation between design variables and meteorological data to establish analytical criteria for the prediction of the average temperature, which are responsible for the longitudinal deformation of the bridges and of the vertical differential temperature profiles. which are responsible for the bending deformations from the long term experimental results.
Strengthening of Continuous Composite Grid-girder Bridges by Using the Post-tensioning

The need for rehabilitation of the existing bridges is a growing concern in many countries and has been emphasized in various research reports and publications. Many bridges constructed between 1960s and 1970s in Korea were designed for relatively light traffic volumes, speeds and the weight, thus they are inadequate for the present traffic conditions. This together with some design deficiencies, has resulted in deficiencies of various degrees of many bridges. One strengthening method which has significant advantages is the application of external post-tensioning tendons. This paper presents an example of three span continuous composite bridge strenghtened by application of external post-tensioning.
Shape Optimization of Truss Structures with Multiobjective Function by α -Cut Approach

The Shape optimization makes it possible to reduce the weight of structure and cost then member sizing optimization. A vast amount of imprecise information is existed in constraints of the optimum design. It is very difficult and sometimes confusing to describe and to deal with the several criteria which contain fuzzy degrees of relatives importance. This paper proposed weighting strategies in the multiobjective shape optimization of fuzzy structural system by
-cut approach. The algorithm in this research is numerically tested for 2-bar truss structure. The result show that. the user can choose the one optimum solution in practices as obtaining the optimum solutions according to the
-cut approach, weight of volume and displacement.
