Checklists for Construction Drawings of Office Buildings based on Working Drawing Analysis

Currently the quality of construction drawings is deteriorated due to restrictions on time costs allowed to the design phase. Moreover shop drawings are arbitrarily produced without the standard criteria, and cleared off after the completion of construction. As a result, the information of produced shop drawings is not feedback to the design phase, and the quality of the construction drawings become worse. This study proposes checklists that include information requested at construction sites and the shop drawings as well as the existing checklists for the construction drawings. The checklists integrate designer's check-items according to breakdown of drawings and contractor's check-items base don construction process. Index matrices of the integrated checklists is developed for practical application of the checklists, and validated through intensive interview with design and construction practitioners.
Integrated Knowledge Management System based on Construction Portal

Construction companies recently have been highly interested in developing information system as following the advanced of IT technology. Especially, with advent of knowledge-based paradigm, Knowledge Management System(KMS) has been actively built. However, current KMS is not optimized and not satisfied because KMS is not integrated with existing information system and has problems of method of knowledge management. The objectives of this research is to develop integrated KMS, which synthesizes knowledge and functions of scattered information system. This research investigates current KMS and analyzes the requirements of KMS. Based on the requirements, the utilization of construction portal is suggested. And integrated knowledge management method, which has connections with applications in construction portal, is suggested and the system is developed.
Schematic Cost Estimation Method using Case-Based Reasoning: Focusing on Determining Attribute Weight

Because the estimated cost at early stage has great influence on decisions of project owner, the importance of early cost estimation is increasing. However, it depends on experience and knowledge of the estimator mainly due to shortage of information. Those tendency developed into case-based reasoning(CBR) method which solves new problems by adapting previous solution to similar past problems. The performance of CBR model is affected by attribute weight, so that its accurate determination is necessary. Previous research utilizes mathematical method or subjective judgement of estimator. In order to improve the problem of previous research, this suggests CBR schematic cost estimation method using genetic algorithm to determine attribute weight. The cost model employs nearest neighbor retrieval for selecting past case. And it estimates the cost of new cases based on cost information of extracted cases. As the result of validation for 17 testing cases, 3.57% of error rate is calculated. This rate is superior to accuracy rate proposed by AACE and the method to determine attribute weight using multiple regression analysis and feature counting. The CBR cost estimation method improve the accuracy by introducing genetic algorithm for attribute weight. Moreover, this makes user understand the problem-solving process easier than other artificial intelligence method, and find solution within short time through case retrieval algorithm.
Improvements of Policies related Building Energy Reduction in Korea

Today, more than thiry countries around the world are designated as a mandatory GHG(GreenHouse Gas) emissions country from the UNFCCC(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Korea is also possible to designate a mandatory GHG emissions country after Second mandatory emissions which will be started in 2013. Accordingly, Korea government has made efforts to reduce GHG and has enforced energy-related policies to deduce building energy. But there is no process such as providing of existing building improvement recommendations or expert verification for building remodeling in Korea energy-related policies compared with policies in other countries. For this reason, improvements of Korea which divided governments and city provinces are suggested. However suggested improvements are directions, so additional research is needed for detail methods.
Business Process Model for Urban Regeneration Project using BPMN Modeling Method

From 2000s, the development to improve space use of urban area has been requested because of unorganized urban development in 1960~70s. For this reason Urban Redevelopment projects have been changed to urban regeneration project based on the renewed law. Recent urban regeneration Projects are bigger and more complex than ever. These kinds of projects need good communication between projects stakeholders, however there are problems in processing project for the lack of standardized business process. The purpose of this study is to provide common business process of urban regeneration projects for stakeholders to improve understanding project business process through analyzing association way of urban regeneration project and modeling business process by BPMN (Business Process Modeling Notation) method. And also it is expected to improve communication between stakeholders and to shorten project time through prompting project participation with the proposed business process.
Problem Analysis and Improvement Scheme Based on Questionnaire Survey to Design VE Status for Apartment Buildings

The purpose of this study is to analyze problems and suggest improvement scheme based on questionnaire survey to design VE status for apartment buildings. For this study, the adapted research methods are case studies of design VE to construction companies and questionnaire survay to design staffs. The results of this study are as follows: 1) In the system aspect, the problems of design VE for apartment buildings are insufficiency of regulation and difficulty of performing design VE actively. In the performance aspect, the problems is absence of design VE procedure suited to apartment buildings. 2) In the system side, the improvements of design VE for apartment buildings include regulatory enlargement of design VE application for apartment buildings and rearrangement of VE incentive system for design staffs. In the performance side, a VE procedure suited to apartment buildings is developed and suggested.
The Efficiency Scheme of Design VE through the Case Studies of Construction VE for Apartments

The purpose of this study is to efficiency scheme to design VE through the case studies of construction VE forapartments. The adapted research method includes five case studies of construction VE and analysis of constructionVE practice. The results of this study are as follows 1) For efficiency of design VE, data management system whichis necessary for construction VE database establishment and its application were proposed. 2) Through workingsystem improvement of construction VE, an improvement to design VE performance process was proposed. 3)Consideration factors and main VE items for efficient design VE item selection of apartment buildings wereproposed.
Development of an Optimal Trajectory Planning Algorithm for Automated Pavement Crack Sealer

During the last two decades, several tele-operated and machine-vision-assisted systems have been developed in construction and maintenance area such as pavement crack sealing, sewer pipe rehabilitation, and excavation. In developing such tele-operated and machine-vision-assisted systems, trajectory plans are very important tasks for optimal motions of robots whether their environments are structured or unstructured. This paper presents an optimal trajectory planning algorithm used for a machine-vision-assisted automatic pavement crack sealing system. In this paper, the performance of the proposed optimal trajectory planning algorithm is compared with the greedy trajectory plans which are used in previously developed pavement crack sealing systems. The comparison is based on computational cost versus overall gains in crack sealing efficiency. Finally, it is concluded that the proposed algorithm plays an important role in productivity improvement of the automatic pavement crack sealing system developed.
Performance Analysis of Construction Technology Policy

Korean government has implemented various construction technology policies to attain competitiveness. However, there have not been interested in appropriate objectives and performance evaluation of the policy implementation. Previous evaluation included only inputs during implementation process not outputs or outcomes. Therefore, this paper performs performance evaluations on 3rd general plans for construction technology that had been implemented from 2003 to 2007 by government. This analyzes both quantitative and qualitative results. The results tell us that clear and appropriate objectives and evaluation methodology should be established for effective performance evaluation. This paper will provide the basis for establishing future construction policies or plans.
Development of Performance Indicators for Asset Management in Public Facilities

In Korea, much effort is being made to introduce asset management for improved efficiency and lower costs. Many researches related to asset management are ongoing, but asset management for public facilities is still in its early development stage in many countries including Korea. It is necessary to continuously improve and complement asset management for its successful execution. Thus, there should be a series of performance measurements and evaluations to perceive the current state of asset management in Korea from which to set future goals. In developed countries including Australia, asset management performance is measured using various methods for diverse purposes. The Korea Institute of Construction Technology has recently launched a study entitled Development of an Asset Management System for Public Facilities (KTAM-40) to change the country’s existing countermeasure-type maintenance system into a preliminary maintenance system and to suggest asset management evaluation parameters. this study aims to develop performance indicators of effective asset management with respect to its utility, which shall include all matters that are important for the efficient measurement of the management of domestic public facilities using the BSC (Balanced Score Card) method, and AHP method.
The Comparison and Analysis of Dust, Soil and Water Pollution Through the Case Study of Demolition Sites

With the rapid economic growth and improvement of living conditions in Korea, rebuilding and redevelopment of existing houses has also been rapidly increasing. As a result, considerable construction and demolition wastes have been produced. Demolition wastes, however, must be given special attention because of the various harmful substances in them. The construction waste has been produced most at demolition phase, but the research into that area has not being to make nearly within the country. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the contamination figures of the heavy metals and toxin organic substances in the soil and water caused by flying ashes generated and eventually accumulated in building demolition works. AB a result. most of the pollution levels were not worrisome, but some were increased after the demolition with the water used to prevent the dusty air and in the target buildings. However in the vicinity of the demolition sites with explosives there was no report of study in water and soil pollutions, so to minimize pollutions we need to make plans to select the harmful substance in the first place. Thus, this research is expected to be the important materials for future research into the construction waste area.
