A Comparison of Income Level and Work-Related Fatalities for Finding Causes and Measures for Construction Sector

As the income level of a country gets improved, people's social, economic, and cultural expectation will grow at the same time. Although the income level of Korea has been remarkably improved, her work-related fatality rate is the highest among OECD countries. Moreover, the rate hasn't been reduced for more than 10 years. This study aims to provide appropriate measures for work-related fatality reduction by comparing the income levels and the work-related fatality rates of countries and by analysing the problems of our worker-oriented accident prevention policy. For the comparison of income level and work-related fatalities, this study suggests income-level incorporated fatality rate, and it turned out that the rate of Korea is the highest among the countries. In order to find out the causes of that result, this study has found that our law enforcement is much weaker than that of UK, which implicates more strict law enforcement policy is needed to improve our work-related safety.
Potential Value Improvement Target Choice Methodology (PVTCM) in Construction Projects

Construction VE activities has occupies an important position as a key tool of the project in terms of budget and performance improvements. Reflecting this situation, VE application scope is being expanded than before. Thus, construction projects are required the continued research and development for effective use of construction VE. VE target choice method is the central part in the construction VE work. But, this has a problem with low utilization in practical terms. Accordingly, this study was developed the new methodology(PVTCM) for VE target selection of the construction VE work. Its contents are as follows: First, to analyze practical problem for VE target choice method through VE practical data. Second, to extract the high potential VE object based on the cost model and ideas similarity by excellent VE cases analysis. Third, to implement standardized VE object item by using affinity diagram for each construction type items. This research were conducted to experts interviews for comparison analysis with the cost model as one of a representative target selection method. As a result, proposed method were implemented significantly higher performance in terms of practical effectiveness than conventional method.
A Study on the Applicability of Character Recognition Technology for Construction Supply Chain Management of Structural Steel Components and Precast Concrete Works

As construction projects increase their complexity, variety, and scale, various recognition applications (such as RFID, bar-code etc.) have been tried for managing material effectively in construction projects. However, existing recognition applications for construction material management have some limitations that cause additional works (such as attaching RFID tag), additional cost (labor cost, recognition device cost, etc.), and cognitive impairment of workers. Therefore, this study proposed a character recognition technology as an alternative of previous recognition technologies such as RFID, bar-code, etc. The technical feasibility of proposed technology was validated by three recognition tests. Additionally, this study proposed code the structure to manage materials using the character recognition technology. The effects of character recognition technology are presented by comparing with existing RFID-based logistics processes.
Analysis of Constructability Factors Affecting on the Productivity of Tall Building Construction -With Focus on the Area of Steel Work-

Achieving high productivity and constructability are very important issues in construction industry. Study on constructability have been conducted actively, and many researches referred that improving constructability can enhance cost, quality, schedule, productivity and so on. However, there are lack of quantitative analysis, since most studies have proved correlation between productivity and constructability using questionaries and by case studies. Also, researches are mostly about specific detail scope of work to improve constructability, thus it is hard to apply constructability factors on various work in construction. In this paper, will deduct general factors affecting on constructability and evaluate effects of factors affecting on each work. Furthermore this paper will verify impact of factors affecting on productivity by multi regression anlaysis using actual data sets of high-rise building construction site.
An identification of optimized energy usage factors and monitoring System development for safety identification for elderly living

The speed of aging society is increasingly getting faster in Korea. Currently, there are over one million elderly living alone, which represents more than 19% of the total elderly in Korea. Although various policies and research have been implemented for caring the elderly living alone, there have been obvious limitations in realization of the caring system due to inconvenience, privacy violation, difficult operation and maintenance. Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a method and a prototype system to monitor safety of elderly living alone by using energy usage information of automatic meter reading device. The proposed system is expected to improve or resolve the existing limitations and to provide 24 hour monitoring and early detection of death for the elderly living alone without adding staffs for operation and maintenance in a more effective and economic way.
Work Process Analysis of the High-performed Precast Concrete Columns using Simulation Technology

Since the structure systems of construction projects have been forced to be large, high-rised, and complex, many researchers have been put their efforts to develop high strength concrete incorporating diverse advanced materials. In order to improve the performance of the concrete, the fibers leading high ductility to concrete have been used, consequently concrete columns adopting High-Performance Fiber Cement(HPFC) have been developed. This paper analyzed not only the construction work process of HPFC column installed to the real construction project, but also construction productivity of the columns by using discrete event simulation technique. As a result, several considerations on installing such a column have identified, compared with the works for typical concrete columns. In particular, there was specific characteristic to install the columns in terms of labor resource productivity, which is not shown with the work for the typical concrete columns.
Technology Valuation Evaluation Model of Decision Making System using Income Approach for Commercialization in LNG Plant Construction

The proportion of investment in national R&D projects in construction and transportation has been increasing continuously; in terms of the size of R&D projects, there are many medium- to large-sized projects of over KRW 10 billion. However, in spite of such continuous increase in R&D investments, there are many technologies developed but not commercialized, i.e., the quiescence of technology. Accordingly, it is necessary to link the R&D results to commercialization by expanding the scope of R&D projects. In this context, this study presented objective reference prices to be used in contracting/transacting technology and implementing commercialization strategy by conducting technology valuations against on-going research projects with earnings approach, and by estimating value of patented technology. Sum of free cash flow (business value) that can be generated during the life of the technology was estimated as KRW 512 million by reflecting a discount rate of 16.34% to convert it into the present value. In addition, the technology value was computed as KRW 227million by applying a technology factor of 44.39% to the above value. Based on the technology value estimated in this way, it is necessary to establish industrialization and commercialization strategy of the technology.
A Study on Estimating Construction Cost of Apartment Housing Projects Using Genetic Algorithm-Support Vector Regression

The accurate estimation of construction cost is important to a successful development in construction projects. In previous studies, the construction cost are estimated by statistical methods. Among the statistical methods, support vector regression (SVR) has attracted a lot of attentions because of the generalization ability in the field of cost estimation. However, despite the simplicity of the parameter to be adjusted, it is not easy to find optimal parameters. Therefore, to build an effective SVR model, SVR's parameters must be set properly without additional data handling loads. So this study proposes a novel approach, known as genetic algorithm (GA), which searches SVR's optimal parameters, then adopt the parameters to the SVR model for estimating cost in the early stage of apartment housing projects. The aim of this study is to propose a GA-SVR model and examine the feasibility in cost estimation by comparing with multiple regression analysis (MRA). The experimental results demonstrate the estimating performance based on the percentage of estimations within 25% and find it can effectively do the accurate estimation without through the trial and error process.
Development on Breakdown Structure of Construction Site centered Construction Temporary Technology Index

A construction temporary work is main process and importance trade section. It has many works and facilities such as temporary transfer equipments which tower crane, and lift, and architectural temporary facilities which temporary office, temporary warehouse, and site test laboratory, and construction temporary equipments which scaffoldings, work plates, construction supports, and forms to set and to use in under construction and to remove in the end. A technology system of construction temporary has very low availability of field works and needs improvements in Korea as construction site has a quick response about new requirements. This study is organized existing technology systems and new technologies for field works, and developed breakdown structure of construction temporary technologies to be a basic of temporary technologies as review with site managers. For this, it will improve to be a knowledge and information system as a research of a performance and an availability about a construction temporary technology index.
PSM based Price Estimating for Local Mixed-Use Apartment Development

Since the late 1990s, mixed-use apartment, armed with high qualities and large scales with a high ratio of TFA(Total Floor Area) have been continuously provided accommodating exclusive community facilities along with high-tech securities, not to mention excellent skyline view. However, especially in mid-small cities, there have been only a few supplies. As a result, none of the mixed-use housing provided by high-end brands has ever been built in non-metropolitan area. But constructors couldn't plan the projects which aims to build the mixed-use apartment in local city, because they couldn't get the basic data or advanced research for feasibility analysis. Therefore, to suggest the useful price for mixed-use apartment supply project of local city, the PSM(Price Sensitivity Method) widely used for determining the price preferences as a market research tools has been applied. As analysis results, the estimated price of mixed-use apartment is 10.8% higher than general apartment, and mixed-use apartment has lower price sensitivity than general apartment. As price determinants, the age, education level and family size influence on UTP in significant level. It is expected that these research findings can be applied for establishing the solid marketing strategy of mixed-use apartment development project in local city.
Development of the Preliminary Cost Estimate Method for the Free-Form Building Facade Trade in Conjunction with the Panel Optimization Algorithm Process

The outer surfaces of free form buildings contain panels with two-directional curvatures. To construct these panels, complex geometric surfaces should be divided into forms and sizes that can be manufactured and constructed efficiently. Because the bigger the curvatures of these panel, the more expensive the construction costs, these complex curvatures should go through optimal process of reinterpretation to minimize the curved surfaces with complex two-directional curvatures, which is called panel optimization. Small construction and design companies have trouble in calculating even rough estimate and cannot adjust expected construction cost of the panels based on comparison of design alternatives in conjunction with panel optimization process due to lack of knowledge and experience. This study conducts the research that can support designers' cost decision-making in the design stage of the free form buildings with respect to the panel optimization process. A 3D commercial application specialized to modeling free form shapes is used for the purpose.
A Study on Developing the Business Index of Electrical Construction Business

Electrical Construction industry uses Construction industry's statistical data for business outlook. Because there are not electrical construction business view's statistical data. It has own unique characteristic which is different from construction industry. So it must have a electrical construction Business Index. This study was focused on developing the business index of electrical construction business. Electrical construction business index consists of electrical construction composite Index(ECI) and the electrical construction business survey index(EBSI). This study experimentally analyzes the business views of electrical construction industry in 2/4 quarter of 2014. The leading Index of ECI indicates -0.4% compared with 1/4 quarter of 2014, coincidence index also shows that electrical construction industry's business cycle is in an economic downturn. EBSI is 83.5 in 2/4 quarter of 2014, down from 95.2 in 1/4 quarter of 2014. It means that electrical construction company has a pessimistic prediction. As a result we know that the Business Index of Electrical Construction Business shows similar results. It is expected to make contribution for electrical contractors to establish management strategies and prepare responses to economic changes by providing information about economic trends of electrical construction business and forecasting future economy.
Comparison of the CO
Emissions of Buildings using Input-Output LCA Model and Hybrid LCA Model

This study aims to determine whether or not the input output life cycle assessment (I-O LCA) model can be used to assess the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission of buildings in initial planning phase. To ensure this end, this study proposed I-O LCA model which is the simplified LCA model and Hybrid LCA model which is the detailed LCA model, and then assessed and compared the CO2 emission of six case projects (three apartment complexes and three educational facilities) using the two LCA model. The results of the case study showed that the CO2 emissions assessed by the I-O LCA is significantly similar to the CO2 emission assessed by the Hybrid LCA model. The similarity of results from both LCA models was 78.2-86.3% in apartment complexes and 59.9-84.8% in educational facilities. However, the CO2 emissions from I-O LCA model were smaller than the CO2 emissions from Hybrid LCA model in case study. Nevertheless, the case study showed that the I-O LCA model was capable of assessing the CO2 emission of buildings quite appropriately although the I-O LCA model is the simplified LCA model which considers only the construction cost. The I-O LCA model is expected to be a useful tool for assessing the CO2 emission of buildings in initial planning phase.
Development of Parametric BIM Libraries for Civil Structures using National 2D Standard Drawings

Development of infrastructure component libraries is a critical requirement for the accelerated adoption of BIM in the civil engineering sector. Libraries reduce the time for BIM model creation, allows accurate quantity take offs, and shared use of standard models in a project. However, such libraries are currently in very short supply in the domestic infrastructure domain. This research introduces library components for retaining walls and box culverts generated from 2D standard drawings made publicly available by MOLIT. Commercial BIM software was used to create the concrete geometry and rebar, and dimensional/volumetric parameters were defined to maximize the reuse and generality of the libraries. Use of the these libraries in a project context demonstrates that they allow accurate and quick quantity take offs, and easier management of geometric information through the use of a single library as to numerous 2D drawings. It also demonstrates the easy modification of the geometries of the components if and when they need to changed. However, the application also showed that some of the rebar components (stirrups and length wise rebars) do not get properly updated when concrete geometries are changed, demonstrating the limits of current software applications. The research provides evidence of the many advantages of using BIM libraries in the civil engineering, thus providing the incentive for further development of standard libraries and promoting the use of BIM in infrastructure projects.
Analysis of the Degraded Performance and Restoration Plan of Lfieline Systems Considering Interdependency in the Post-disaster

Lifeline service disruptions can have significant impacts on local community in the aftermath natural disaster. Although effective restoration strategies with accurate damage assessment are required, the internal complexity of lifeline networks and their interdependency makes the understanding restoration process of lifeline systems a difficult issue. Additionally, the limitations of previous research relating the influence assessment of lifeline to community disaster resilience, highlight the need for understanding of lifeline networks. Therefore, this paper presents an agent-based model to discover emergent behavior and evaluate the interdependency and resiliency in lifeline networks. This research will provide basic guideline of resource allocation in order to mitigate cascading failures of the post disaster restoration processes.
A Predictive Model for the Number of Potholes Using Basic Harmony Search Algorithm

A bunch of asphalt roads have been damaged frequently in relation to the rapid climate change. To solve and prevent this type of problems, many nationalities in the world have performed various researches. In this regard, the objective of this study is to develop prediction model as to the number of potholes occurred in seoul. At the same time, we have utilized empirical and statistical approaches in order for us to identify factors which is affecting the actual occurrence. The predictive model was determinded by using BHS (Basic Harmony Search) algorithm. Prediction was based on the weather and traffic data as well as data occurrence data of porthole. To assess the influences which are PAR(Pitch Adjusting Rate) and HMCR(Harmony Memory Considering Rate), we determined suitability by changing the values. In the process of the determining a predictive model, the predictive model composed Training data (2011, 2012 and 2013yrs data). To determine the suitability of the model, we have utilized Testing Set (2009 and 2010 yrs data). The suitability of the basic prediction model has been from RMSE(Root Mean Squared Error), MAE(Mean Absolute Error) and Coefficient of determination.
