On Science Textbooks and Related Teaching Learning Materials

The purpose of the study was to establish a new view of textbook which may contribute to the abolishment of the instruction mainly based on the only textbook and to the promotion of creativities of students. We first reviewed science textbooks and related teaching-learning materials of foreign countries with emphasis on the relationship among textbook and teaching-learning materials and practical use of them. In western countries the roles of traditional textbook has been changed. That is, various kinds of materials such as reading book, work-book, worksheet, experimental guidebook, filmstrips are used to raise effect of instruction besides of traditional type of textbook. Secondary, we identified the problems related to the science textbook-view of textbook, textbook contents, practical use of textbook-through opinion survey administered to principals akd teachers of elementary schools. The results of the survey are as follows; Concerning the view of textbook, most teachers did not recognize textbook as an absolute materials. They thought that textbook contents could be taught reorganized according to their judgements. On the contrary, teachers responded to the question of whether or not they follow contents of textbook as they are presented in it were approximately 30%. Further, more than 75% of them have seldom used instructional materials except textbooks. In order to revise the problems of our present textbook as stated above, a new view of textbook should be established. We, above all, established 4 basic premises for searching a new view of textbook. 1) Textbook should not be considered as the only material but as being at the center of various teaching -learning materials. 2) The importance of textbook should be illustrated Among Curriculum, textbook and related teaching-learning materials, instruction and evaluation. 3. Textbook contents should not be regarded as definitely fixed or absolute ones. 4. Human being can understand environment more fully by commanding his swnsory organ multilaterally. Under these premises we disscussed about curriculum and textbook, textbook, and instruction, akd evaluation method.
A survey on the Attitudes of the Middle School Students Toward Science Using Klopfers Classification of Science Education

The measurement tad of student's attitudes towards secondary school science had been developed according to the scheme of categories of science education object by Klopfer. Sixteen background factors of student had been chosen in order to find out a difference in student's attitudes towards secondary school science for each background factor. The twenty-eighth grade student's attitudes towards secondary school science in the Province of Chung Cheong Buk Do had been investigated by the developed tool. The findings were as follow: 1. On the whole the investigated students had favorable attitudes towards secondary school science. 2. The adoption of scientific attitudes and favorable attitudes towards science and scientists were the best affirmative attitudes. 3. The correlation between enjoyment of science learning experiences and development of interest in pursuing a career in science was the highest level. 4. The seven of sixteen background factors-sex, interest in science, science mark, location of residence, sat sifaction level at science learning, familiarity level with the name of scientific instruments and intended job-affected studentss attitudes towards secondary school science.
Development of Model for Curriculum and Operation of Department of Science Education

As long as there is education, there will be teacher education. This statement implies that science education is the first step for the improvement of science education of the secondary schools. And science education must reflect an everchanging reality of scientific, technological, and social changes. However there have been problems in the curiculum and its operation for science teacher education. Therefore this research has its objectives to: 1) investigate the current goals of science education in the Korean secondary schools. 2) analyze the quality' and Knowledge required for science teacher to achieve the goals. 3) investigate the status and problems of science teacher education in korea and foreign countries. 4) develop a model for curriculum and its operation for desirable science teacher education. As a result of the study, a model for curriculum is described and the summary of the results of the study and suggestions for operation of the model are followed.
The Materials of the play Activities for the Lowor Grades in the Elementary School

It is the purpose of this study that is to develop the materials of the Scientific activities by the medium of "play" having influence on the growth of the lower grades in elementary school. For the sake of this object, this study develops and presents the materials of tile basic logical thinking play and sense-thinking play activities. And it analyzes the degree that they can be applied to the elementary science textbook of nature current now. As a result this provides 39 of materials of the sense-play and 23 of materials of the logical thinking play activities. And then, if the materials presented here are changed adequatly and have the same main subject as contents of the present textbook, we shall be able to utilize them for the textbook of nature.
Analysis of Research Trends on Science Education in Korea

This study was undertaken to analyze the research trends on science education in Korea. In this study the analysis for of trends of researches on science education, nine areas such as historical change of science Education, Processes of science learning science curriculum, science instruction, teaching-learning materials and equipment for science education, valuation on science education, survey on Korean science education, policy and management of science education, and natural science, were chosen for the analysir. All science education. thesis and dissertations in Korea, papers of science education published by the science center of the Seoul National University and the papers of the Journal of the Korean Association of Res Search in science Education were analyzed. The findings of this study are as follows: 1. Seventy percentile of science educational thesis and dissertations are on natural science areas. 2. About 14% of all papers being sampled is in science curriculum research category. There are few research studies on historical changes of science education, and teaching-learning materials and equipments for science education.
