An Analysis of Misconceptions about the Concepts of Cell- division, Reproduction and Fertilization in High School Biology Textbook I

The rectnt studies on the learning of the scientific concepts have suggested that most students have misconceptions related to the contents to be learned and that those misconceptions exert their influences on the subsequent learning of the content Those facts necessitate the identification of the misconceptions before the instructions and the preparation of the instructional materials based on those misconceptions identified. Several studies also revealed that such biological areas as cell division, reproduction and fertilization were ranked among the most difficult areas for high school students to learn. Therefore, this study had its triple objectives as follows: (1) Identification of misconceptions in such areas as cell division, reproduction and fertilization. (2) Investigation of the current high school biology textbook I's as the sources of those misconceptions. (3) Development of teaching materials based on the misconceptions identified and the problems in the textbooks analyzed. This study identified several misconceptions held by high school students of biological concepts related to the conceptual areas of life-continuity, and found the problems in learning of the high school biology textbooks. Based on the misconceptions and the problems, a teaching/learning model and its content material were developed at the final course of this study.
Relationships Between the Cognitive Levels of Students and Understanding of Concrete and Formal Science Content

The primary purpose of this study was to assess understanding of concrete and formal operational science content by concrete and formal operational students in secondary school physical science classes. To carry out this study subjects were selected from junior high schools of over 2500 students, and they were identified as concrete, transitional, or formal operational using GALT(Group Assessment of Logical Thinking) developed by Roadrangka, Yeany and Padilla(1983). Instructional objectives were extracted from the science content taught during the second term of the academic year in the 7th, 8th and 9th grade, and they were classified as concrete or formal operational. Written test involving those objectives were constructed and administered. The results of this study suggested that formal operational thought brought deeper understanding to concrete science content as well as formal science content. Differential effects by sex on understanding of both concrete and formal science content were contradictory through the grade levels. Results of multiple comparison tests suggested that students categorized as formal operational demonstrated no better understanding of concrete science content than those categorized as transitional. However, they demonstrated better understanding of formal science content.
A Comparison Study of Physics Curriculum for the Energy Education on the High School Level -Centered on current physics textbooks of Korea, America and Japan-

The contents of current physics textbooks in Korean high school and those of the forergn country (America and Japan)have been investigated. Especially the contents related to energy have been examined. Comparing and analyzing the results, we have suggested the method of improvement of the energy education in high school curriculum.

The contents which is related to energy in current science textbooks of high school have been investigated. Based on the analysis of the results, we attempt to develop a model of energy curriculum on high school level.
An Analysis and Survey on the status of the Korean Middle School Science Curriculum: The Science Objectives and Their Achievement

To figure out the present status of Korean middle school science curriculum in the national level is not an easy job. especially in the restricted condition such as this research project. Therefore, to achieve a meaningful result, the case study type of research was adopted In the study five middle schools (2boy's and 3girl's)were selected and examined intensively. In this study, two major works were done. One was the analysis of the present middle school science curriculum and the other was to examine the current status of the administration of the curriculum in schools. This first study focused on the evaluation of the current Curriculum. Acording to the result, the objectives stated in the teachers guide and implied by the testbook were heavily concentrated on the knowledge level in Boom's taxonomy. Achievement on the objectives which were selected as important were very low. The average pass rate for the selected objectives was less than 50% of the students. This means the content level of the present science curriculum is not appropriate. The study suggested that the present middle school science curriculum should be revised and the content should be replaced with easier topics to match the students cognitive level. The study also suggested further studies to measure the cognitive level of Korean students in national scale.

The purpose of this study is specificationaly construct to the instructional objectives of Earth Science I in high school. Specification of instructional objectives will be able to serve as guides for both teaching and evaluation. Some problems were discussed as follows; (1) Establishment of relevant material for instructional objectives (2) Extraction of useful contents for Earth Science I (3) Classification of behavior factor (4) Level of specification (5) Stating method of instructional objectives Based on the above, total 358 objectives (5 chapter objectives, 16 sub-chapter objectives, 47 section objectives, 290 instructional objectives) were constructed for Earth Science I in high school.
