A study on the Program for Substantial Science Education In Secondary schools:Science Curriculum

Secondary schools in Korea have been faced with several critical problems in their science education. Among them the most fundamental are the problems which involve the development and operation of science curricula. This study had, therefore, its objective to develop the suggestions for sabstantial science curricula of secondary schools. Actually the objectives are trifold as following specific description.
Analysis of the rationale and theory of science curricula.
Status survey of secondary science curricula and identification of the problems in development and operation of the curriculum in foreign and Korean secondary schools.
Development of suggestions for substantial science curriculam of secondary school. In order to attain these objectives the methods of literauare survey. questionaire and interview were used. Through these methods several problems are found and identified. The major findings and problems identified in this study are:
aims, goals, and objectives of science education are not dfferentiated.
the curricula show discipline-centered seleetion and organization of the content:neglect the relationship of science-technology-society and life-world context.
shortage of weekly instructional hours for science subjects. Other findings and problems are described and the descriptions of the suggestions for substantial curricula are followed at the end of this paper.
A study on the Elementary Science Curriculum and Computer Based Education

Computer based instruction in the elementary science curriculum will be played an important role through the fifth curriculum reform from the 1989 school year. This is essential for the science instruction because the strategies on the problem-solvings and inquiry approaches can be utilized for the science classroom. Computer education can be thought as the education about the computer and the education using the computer. Of them the education using the computer means the computer assisted instruction(CAI) what is called all the possible activities using the computer in the classroom. Student achievement as the result of CAI depends on the learning activities of students and the instructional techniques and strategies of teachers using the computer. However, computer based education to enhance the student achievement is pointed out the lacks of the standardized Korean alphabet code and the compatibility of qualified software. These problems will be relieved according to the coding for the Korean alphabet of SUPER PILOT program language.
An innovative investigation of science content in the elementary school

This study analyzed the specific science content involved in 'the 5th curriculum in the elementary school' in Korea and four Kinds of 'Science in the elementary school' books. And innovative science content is investigated for children's living in the scientific, technological, and informationized society. As results, biology is emphasized much more than other areas. Chemistry is less emphasized than other areas. The innovative science content should inchudethe S. T.S problems, the recent developments and the value or religious problems related to science. This study suggested several innovative science contents.
Analysis of Theoretical Background for Current Research on Science Curriculum and Teaching/Learning and Implications for Future Science Education

During the last decade researchers in science education and psychology have emphasized the importance of children's ideas, or "what they already know", which they bring to their related learning situations. Most research reports on the children's prior ideas reject both the traditional epistemologies and the conventional learning theories. Therefore, this study has its objective to analyze the traditional epistemologies as well as post-positivism contemporarily in vogue, to examine both the conventional learning theories and the constructivism of psychology, and then, based on the analyses, to draw the implications for the future science education. The implications are described under such headings as the nature of science, the science curricula, and the science teaching/learning. The implications are drawn in logical relation to the post-positivism and constructivism, and some of which are empirically validated by the research on the children's conceptions.

The Korean Federation of Education Association has published "Vacation Life" to promote self-teaching of middle school students during the summer and winter vacation of middle school students every year. The book include whole subjecy offered in the middle school. However subject of science(Physics, chemistry, biology and earth science) is more emphasized. This article described brief summary of the contents of biology branch published in winter "Vacation Life", 1980 and summer "Vacation Life" 1981.
