A Study on Analysis of the Preference of Container Ports in Northeast Asia - with the case of Busan Container Port -

Recently, mutual economy cooperation in Northeast Asia has leaded steady growth among main countries of it and rather promoted a single economy circle. In this region, Busan container port competes with min container ports in China, Taiwan and Japan in it for attracting transshipment container traffic of north-Shanghai in China and for-east Russia. Therefore, this paper aims to suggest competitive strategies for Busan container port to attract container traffic in Northeast Asia To do so, it evaluates the preference of important ports in the competitive situation and competitiveness edgy of important ports in Northeast Asia, and finally proposes the relative order of important factors. Based on the evaluation of it, first, the Busan ports hue tn strengthen port facilities to attract more traffic and in detail, reinforce the number of berth, yard areas and handling equipment Second, they also have to provide high quality of services to deliver cargos in time, not being damaged and swiftly response to shipowner and shipper`s claim, Third, they need to review the strategy to adopt flexible tariff policy and to invest the profit from tariff in port service and facilities, as providing higher port tariff level by a regular rate.
An Empirical Study on the Decision Making Factors for the fleet composition of oil Tankers with Reference to the Korean Refineries

There has been an interesting trend showing that the number of tankers owned by major oil company has been decreasing since the 1980s, while the number of tankers chartered by them is increasing. So do Korea oil refineries in the period 1990s. Therefore, the following question is raised： Why have oil refinery companies, national and international, been much more dependent upon chartered ships than their owned ships since 1980s\ulcorner This paper tried to answer the above question. In so, doing ten decision-making factors for fleet composition of oil tankers are drawn through literature survey on the research topic with questionnaires and interviews to the four big Korean oil refineries.
Revisit to Estimate the Time Cost of Ships and Cargoes

The time cost of ship end cargoes is one of the most important data for decision-making of port investment and operational efficiency. Studies in this area were initiated internationally by Goss and Mann in late 70`s and also done in Korea 10 years ago using the same methodology as Goss. The main purpose of this paper is to revisit to estimate the time cost using updated data. The estimation was undertaken sampling data on various investment and operating costs by vessel from 205 vessels, comprising 47.5％ of the notional fleet in Korea as well as on cargoes from international trade statistics. Compared with the study of 10 years ago, major finding of this research is that time costs of liquid and dry bulk carriers have increased, in case of the former type, showing almost doubled cost increase. The increase is deemed to be caused by very expensive LNG carriers. Lowered social discount rate in this study compared with 10 years ago, in general, has mused the costs to stay at similar level to the previous study. Sensitivity tests were conducted using various social discount rates.
An Empirical Analysis of Successful Alliance Management in Liner Shipping

The question of how to make strategic alliances work successfully is becoming increasingly important as more and more firms regard cooperative relationships as a means of improving their competitive position. The objectives of this research are to determine whether certain liner shipping alliance forms are more successful than others, whether the relative importance of reasons for successful liner shipping alliance varies with the different reasons, and whether the relative importance of reasons for alliance success varies with the form liner shipping alliances. The research findings have shown that the majority of liner shipping alliance forms, utilised by respondents in this survey, experienced a relatively high level of success. However, success was shown to be dependent upon a variety of factors and the reasons for successful alliance varied with the form of alliances.
A Study on the Implementation of Due Diligence and Its Effect - Focussing on the Marine Hull Insurance -

There may be some cases in which underwriters refuse to pay claims to the assured in case of his want of due diligence and actually, a lot of cases which an assured could not have been covered, existed through the history of marine hull insurance claims. Statistically, looking back the past marine accident cases in korea, the most parts of the accident are man-made disasters caused by want of due diligence. So, this study will focuss on this kind of marine losses and insurance clauses and other relevant rules containing due diligence such as due diligence of the assured in inchmaree clause, ITC-Hulls(1983), and due diligence of carrier in Hague-Visby Rule and so on. This study also shows what the disadvantages to marine enterprisers are, caused by want of due diligence and the advantages of doing due diligence are. In conclusion, this study contends that marine enterprisers should perform due diligence in dong their business for both financial stability and good management of their companies.
A Study on the Japanese Maritime Oil Spillage Management System and Activities

Japanese oil companies have begun to set up a mutual support system to prepare for any large scale oil spillages due to the huge increase in size of tankers since 1973. In 1990, the Petroleum Association of Japan established the Oil Spill Response Department and has been conducting researches on management of oil spill combatting materials and the effective prevention of maritime oil disasters. Japan Coast Guard, in accordance with the regulations of the OPRC in 1995, formulated the national contingency plan and built a mutual-contact network among the related government institutions. Its Guard & Rescue Department. Disaster Prevention Section has been working for the maintenance of oil spill combatting materials and coordinating related work with private organizations. The Japanese government has been strengthening the maritime oil spillage management system since the Nakhodka wreck incident in 1997.
Design and Implementation of Mobile Phone Interface Module for DGPS Correction Message Transmission

The conventional RTK-GPS technique has many problems which are permission using RF wireless modem, influence of geographic obstacle using radio wave, frequency interference, finiteness of frequency resources. To solve these problems, in this paper, we designed the DGPS correction message transmission system as a method to substitute the RF wireless modem of RTK-DGPS receiver. Then the interface module was designed and implemented for linkage of GPS receiver and mobile phone. As a result worked differential surveying using receiving correction message using RS-232C and communication control, users of mobile station were worked differential surveying correction between mobile phones. Interface module system was received the same result of precision which was compared RF wireless modem system.
Design and Implementation of Data Replication Web Agent between Heterogeneous DBMSs based on XML

Since current HTML used on the internet is to use restricted tag, it is not easy to store information and extract data from information of document. XML defined newly tag and is easy to store information and extract data from information. So XML is easier to transact information rather than HTML. XML is suitable for enterprise`s requirement needs data exchange between heterogeneous databases. This paper proposes web agent for data replication between heterogeneous DBMSs(Database Management System). Web agent system maneges database on the web and exchange data in heterogeneous database using XML. Then we designed and implemented for web agent of data replication between heterogeneous DBMSs.
An Experimental Assessment of the Effects of Residual Stresses on Fracture Behavior of the Plate

The quantitative assessment of the effect of the residual stress on fracture behavior was executed by some experiment and numerical analysis. First of all, artificial residual stresses were imposed on CT(Compact Tension) specimens by local heating using gas torch, and an appropriate distribution of residual stresses was obtained by thermal elastic-plastic FE analysis. To certify the result of the FE analysis, an experimental measurement was performed in accordance with ASTM standard. Fracture toughness test was executed on the several types of specimens. The first type was the specimen without residual stresses, and the others had different peak value of compressive residual stress at crack front via controlling the heat flux. All the test results were presented on th J resistance(JR) curves and discussed to verify the effect of compressive residual stresses on fracture behavior.
Dynamic Response Analysis of Superstructures on Very Large Floating Structures

The importance of utilization of ocean space is increased due to high population and narrow land space. The development of a new technology for future use of ocean space, such as a design technology of Very Large Floating Structures(VLFS) is needed. This paper introduces the rime history analysis of superstructures on very large floating structures and proposes the estimation method of time displacement history considering wave loads. The dynamic responses of superstructure according to variation of period and amplitude are analysed using an example frame structure and the dynamic structural safety of VLFS pilot superstructure is evaluated.
On Visualization Simulation for Generation of Three Dimensional Sea State

Recently a ship manoeuvring simulator has been developed by Korea Maritime University. We are desiring to apply the movement of wave to the visual scene of sea state in the simulator. This paper discussed the calculation method and visualization simulation of three dimensional sea state using OpenGL API, and the possibility to apply calculation result to the simulator.
A Theoretical Review on Mega Ship and Mega Hub

In 1990s the debate on very large ships made the Mega ship and mega port concept emerge. Many studies have bees done on such big ships by consultant, naval architects, port designers, ship operators, economists etc,. with different points of view and results. This paper, by reviewing the literature systematically, identifies limitations and major issues, and suggests directions for further studies.
A Study on Climate Characteristics of Waterfront in Busan Area

The waterfront has distinct climate characteristics different from urban or inland area. These may create not only the rise of energy and maintenance costs for facilities located at waterfront areas, but also the negative effects on the climate of the nearby inland area, unless these are treated with particular care. For the present study, the climate characteristics of waterfront were examined with climate data of 10 observation points carefully selected in Busan area. Each weather observation point was classified into either waterfront area of inland area, based on the distance from the coastal line. Special considerations were given to the climate data gathered at the Dae-Yeon weather station because it shows the climate characteristics similar to those of inland area, although it is located very near the waterfront area. Results indicates that this peculiar climate condition attributes, at least in part, to the reclamation of frontal coastal area.
On the Reclamation Earthwork Calculation using the Hermite and Spline Function

The estimation of the volume of a pit excavation is often required in many surveying, soil mechanics, highway applications and transportation engineering situations. The calculation of earthwork plays a major role in plan or design of many civil engineering projects such as seashore reclamation, and thus it has become very important to improve the accuracy of earthwork calculation. In this paper the spot height method, proposed formulas(A, B, C), and chen and Line method are compared with the volumes of the pits in these examples. And we proposed an algorithm of finding a terrain surface with the free boundary conditions and both direction spline method drawback, i.e., the modeling curves form peak points at the joints. To avoid this drawback, the cubic spline polynomial was chosen as the methematical model of the new method. From the characteristics of the cubic spline polynomial, the modeling curve of the new method was smooth and matched the ground profile well. As a result of this study, algorithm of proposed three methods to estimate pit excavation volume provided a better accuracy than spot height, chamber, chen and Lin method. And the mathematical model mentioned makes is thought to give a maximum acccuracy in estimating the volume of a pit excavation.
