A Basic Study on Position Fixing by Free Gyros

The authors aim to design further an upgraded and self-contained position fixing system to meet the future commercial requirements. As a first step this paper is to investigate the theoretical structure of position fixing based on the nature of free gyro, in which the tilt angles of the two spin axes at an arbitrary position are measured respectively and the elapsed time with respect to a reference position or starting point is observed And it illustrates some limitations to be expected in this system.
Development of Analysis and Evaluation Simulation System for Whistle Sound Related Marine Casualty

This paper describes Three-Dimensional Listening Simulation System (3D-LSS) which is to analyze whistle sound related marine casualties, and is to evaluate the accident situations using 3D sound by Head Related Transfer Function At first, the hree-dimensional listening model from the analysis of accident situations is proposed, and then the reproduction and evaluation methods of 3D sounds are also discussed. The system is designed to explain the accident situations and to simulate the possible situations with GUI based graphics and 3D sound reproduction. The evaluation experiments using 3D-LSS are carried out with six cases that did not known whether it is true or not the blast and listening of the whistle sound between two vessels. As results of psychological assessments by five subjects, the six cases can be analyzed clearly by visual images and audio sounds, thus the usability of 3D-LSS as one of the judgment assistant system of marine casualty is verified.
A Study on the Development of Digital Power Supply for Ship′s Emergency Lighting System

This paper describes an development of digital power supply for ship`s emergency lighting system(SELS). Proposed system is composed of emergency power supply system(EPSS), half bridge(HB) inverter, fluorescent lamp(FL) starting circuit and microprocessor control system. Experimental works using proposed system confirm that speedy and stable power to be supplied when main power source cut-off, compared with conventional analog type, and control input power up to 35.0［%］ by adjusting pulse frequency of the HB inverter.
A Design and Implementation of SENC Structure for efficient storage of S-57 spatial data

The ENC standard, S-57 Specification was established to exchange hydrographic data between it`s users such as HOs ECDIS users, etc. The digital navigation chart which is produced according to the S-57 Specification is called an ENC(Electronic Navigational Chart) and the SENC(System ENC) is a by-product of ENC suitable for computer graphics system Even though the efficient structure of SENC is a key element of measuring ECDIS performance, the amount of papers about these topics are small compared with other research fields. In this paper, the author designed an efficient spatial data structure of SENC, called Mesh This paper also includes the implementation result of the 'Mesh' which displays SENC on computer screen.
A Study on Busan Port Activation by Attracting Transshipment Containers to and from Japan

Logistics needs in Asia are surprisingly increasing due to rapid growth of China Therefore, each country is trying to develop ports in order to attract logistics needs. Korea, also, begins to perform active port marketing policy, centering around Busan port and Kwangyang port, in order to become a logistics hub in Northeast Asia Recently, competitiveness of Japan has decreased due to increase in the inland transport costs, so Japanese is deliberating various counter plans. While Japan is stagnant, Korea has an opportunity for activating Busan port and Kwangyang port. This study estimates logistics costs by classifying types of delivery routes of Japanese imports and exports containers; that is, by dividing the case of using main ports in Japan, or Busan port and Kwangyang port. As a result, logistics costs are greatly reduced when the containers go by way of Busan port and Kwangyang port social and logistics costs.
An Empirical Study on the Political Cost in Korean Shipping Industry

This paper is aimed to guide ocean-going companies to reasonable decisions and to increase the competitiveness of Korean shipping industry by clarifying the determinants of political costs of ocean-going companies, which only depend for the enormous amount of money to introduce the operating fixed assets, or the vessels, upon the supporting policy from the government or the loan from the related financial institutions. As independent variables of the political costs, 5 elements were settled such as company size(sales, total assets and market share), debit ratio, capital concentration ratio, profitability(operating profit) and marine risk(sales fluctuation). To verify the relations and the effect level between dependent variables and political costs, the Multiple Regression Analysis Model was applied The result of the analysis shows significantly positive relations between size variables and political cost of shipping industry. Moreover, debt ratio and profitability were proved significant related with political costs of shipping industry.

In order to fulfill the paper objective, this paper examines the roles of freight forwarders and business environment of Chinese markets.
An Analysis of Container Terminal Facilities Leasing Fee by Assessing Total Sea-Transportation Costs

This paper first tries to analyze total sea transport costs for the transshipment in Busan Port in comparison with direct transport to 4 Chinese Ports, Dalian, Tinajin, Qingdao and Shanghai, based on vessel operation scenarios. The results found that the transshipment in Busan port for the 4 Chinese ports are more expensive than the direct calling to the 4 ports, which implies that Busan port needs to make compensation as an incentive to the carriers providing transshipment service to it in order to keep their royalty. For the compensation, it suggested a method of calculating the Container Terminal Facilities Leasing Fee to levy additional revenue by port authority.
A Study on Design and Fabrication of Broad-Band EMC Filter for PC

This paper deals with EMC filter for a personal computer(PC). A PC contains many sources of noise inside and out, with many connected cables. High noise levels are also emitted from the PC because of high-speed signals. So radiated noise from the computer body may sometimes cause problems. Therefore, we design and fabricate an electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) filter for PC, which is composed of feed-through capacitors and ferrite beads with high permeability. Through extensive test, the proposed EMC filter is shown to have excellent differential-mode and common-mode noises filtering characteristics above 30 dB in the frequency band from 10 MHz to 1.5 GHz. The immunity characteristics are improved more than 10 to 30 dB over the frequency band from DC to 1.8 GHz.ツ
A Study about the Transfer Crane Operation Rules consider with Space Resource and Multi Job

This study was performed to analyze the operation system of transfer crane to improve the reality of yard operation rules in container terminal and present the applicable method of operation rules to apply the operation priority. And we derived the procedure to estimate the maximum number of waiting truck based on the waiting of truck and the occupancy of driving lane in yard, and analyzed the constraint state of space. To solve the space constraint, we provided a multi-job principle to define the space resource and described the solution and sequence diagram for the principle.
A Study on Car License Plate Extraction using ACL Algorithm

In the car license plate recognition system, it is very important to extract the part of the license plate from the car image. In this paper, I use ACL algorithm to extract the license plate image from car image. The ACL algorithm is used to color and luminance information, either. Therefore in this paper, suggested algorithm is called ACL algorithm The ACL algorithm uses color, luminance information and the rate of license plate information Each of these information are used to exact area of license plate. The result of experiment to extract the car license plate with ACL algorithm is 97% extraction rate. The result of experiment with ACL algorithm for the character region, character recognition is 92% extraction rate.
Vessel Traffic Safety Assessment for the Construction of the Mokpo Bridge

A bridge which connects Mokpo North Harbor and Goha Island is going to be constructed until 2009. For the bridges being built in the navigable water area, it is indispensible to carry out vessel traffic safety assessment from the viewpoint of shiphandlers, however, there exist no specific guidelines for the necessary conditions which the bridge designers can rely on. In this paper, traffic safety assessment procedures for the layout of the bridge are briefly introduced, and the conditions which should be taken into account at the initial design stage of the bridge are surveyed For the safety assessment of the bridge design, ship navigation simulations, such as RTS( real time simulation) and FTS(fast time simulation), are carried out, the results of which are statistically analysed to estimate the probability of collision between the ship and the pier of the bridge.
Reproduction of Extreme Waves Caused by Typhoon MAEMI with Wave Hindcasting Method, WAM (II) - Characteristics of extreme waves generated by Typhoon MAEMI in the south coast of Korea -

Following a preceding study of Shin et al.(2004), wave fields for a month of September of 2003 are simulated based on the modified WAM cycle 4 model that enables the precise wave hindcasting with fine spatial meshes, and characteristics of extreme waves at the south coast of Korea are analyzed The accuracy of applied wave model is verified by comparing computed wave parameters and corresponding ones measured at Ieodo ocean research station. The wave hindcasting of typhoon `Maemi` with an hour time interval reveals the extreme wave characteristics at 4 primary locations of south coast of Korea as follows: 1) At the front sea of Chaguido in the south of Jeju-do, the maximum significant wave height, mean wave period and mean wave direction appear to be 7.41m, 13.65s and
respectively at 16:00 KST of Sep. 12, 2003. 2) At the entrance of Masan Bay, 12.50m, 13.65s and
at 21:00 KST of Sep. 12. 3) At the front sea of Suyoung Bay, 13.85m, 13.81s and
at 22;00 KST of Sep. 12. 4) At the front sea of Ulsan port, l1.00m, 13.25s and
at 23:00 KST of Sep. 12.
Sub- Breaking Analysis of Free Surface Flows by the Numerical Simulation

The free-surface flow is simulated to make clear the viscous interaction of stem waves and the sub-breaking phenomena around a high speed vehicle. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by a finite difference method where the body-fitted coordinate system, the wall function and the triple-grid system are invoked They are applied to study precisely on the stem flow of S-103 as to which extensive experimental data are available. Computations are extended to the submerged revolutional body. The numerical result shows that the gradient of M/Us is greatly influenced by the submerged depth And the stem wave is influenced by the separation due to the bow wave.
A Study on the Relationship between Reclamation of the Foreshore and Climate Change in Busan Area

Busan has its unique character which differed from inland such as Seoul and Daegu Because Busan is located in coast district of Korea, it could be inferred that the climate change in Busan had been influenced by foreshore reclamation in the urbanization process. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between reclamation of the foreshore and climate change by analysing the climate change over the past 70 years in three metropolitan cities. The conclusion from this study are as follows. 1) There was not a big difference among elements of climate change in three cities. 2) Annual mean minimum temperature in Seoul and Daegu had remarkably increased over the past 70 years. On the other hand, annual maximum temperature in Busan had a sudden rise in the only tome to reclaim the foreshore.

IMO(International Maritime Organization) is strongly proceeding with adoption of a new maritime environmental convention and coming into r1fed for regulation enhancement about the pollutants which are happened in a ship recently. Study about the conventions that our country currently comes into r1fect, and there is during forwarding and correspondence must be performed effectively. In this paper, International convention on the control of harmful Anti-Fouling system on ship, Ballast water management, Prevention of air pollution from ships, treat a main pending problem in ocean related environmental regulation convention.
