A Study on Proper Minimum Navigation Speed Control in the Korean Ports

Navigation speed control is an important factor to improve the traffic safety, it is only researched about maximum speed control until now. Recently, there are lots of the low speed vessels including towing boats, carry heavy shipbuilding blocks in the Korean waters, so the danger degree of navigating vessels was increasing more and more. This paper analysed the effectiveness of minimum speed control with the operation burden`s decrease, and it proposed the proper the minimum navigation speed of each traffic volume. Main results of this research are as follows. (1) in the case of 5 ships/hour, minimum speed control is effective if the lowest speed is fixed more than 5kts. (2) in the case of more than 10 ships/hour, speed control is some effective if the lowest speed is established 7kts. (3) But, when there are many ships in the waters, minimum speed control is not effective because distances between ships become near and ships navigate for a long time by a lot of ship having a few difference of relative speed.
Development of Quantitative Risk Assessment Methodology for the Maritime Transportation Accident of Merchant Ship

This paper describes empirical approach methodology for the quantitative risk assessment of maritime transportation accident (MTA) of a merchant ship. The principal aim of this project is to estimate the risk of MTA that could degrade the ship safety by analyzing the underlying factors contributing to MTA based on the IMO`s Formal Safety Assessment techniques and, by assessing the probabilistic risk level of MTA based on the quantitative risk assessment methodology. The probabilistic risk level of MTA to Risk Index (RI) composed with Probability Index (PI) and Severity Index (SI) can be estimated from proposed Maritime Transportation Accident Model (MTAM) based on Bayesian Network with Bayesian theorem Then the applicability of the proposed MTAM can be evaluated using the scenario group with 355 core damaged accident history. As evaluation results, the correction rate of estimated PI,
is shown as 82.8%, the over ranged rate of PI variable sensitivity with
is shown within 10%, the averaged error of estimated SI,
is shown as 0.0195 and, the correction rate of estimated RI,
(%), is shown as 91.8%. These results clearly shown that the proposed accident model and methodology can be use in the practical maritime transportation field.
Conceptual Design of Network-based Pilot Supporting System

The ship without thrusters and special propulsion system is supported by the tug boats during berthing and unberthing. The orders to tug boats are made by a pilot. If the positions of ship, tug boats and port are displayed in 2D map, it will be helpful to pilots. In this research, a network-based pilot supporting system(NPSS) has been conceptually designed NPSS, necessary for safe and efficient pilot, has two main functions. One is the monitoring of the situation of berthing and unberthing. And the other is the automatic calculation of the tug forces considering environmental conditions. The NPSS is designed on the basis of network system around the harbor. The NPSS will be validated using ship-handling simulator in the future.
Estimation of buckling and collapse behaviour for continuous stiffened plate under combined transverse axial compression and lateral pressure

Estimation of the buckling and ultimate strength of a continuous stiffened plate subjected to combined transverse compression and lateral pressure is of high importance to ensure the safety of ship structures, particularly for the bottom plating under a deep draft condition For example, bottom plating of bulk carriers is subjected to transverse thrust caused by the bending of double bottom structure and the direct action of pressure on the side shells. Most of experimental tests, theoretical approach and numerical researches have been performed on the buckling and ultimate strength behaviour of plates or stiffened plates under combined compression and lateral pressure. With regard to stiffened panels, however, most of studies have been concerned with the load conditions of combined longitudinal thrust and lateral pressure, while fewer studies have been performed for the combined transverse thrust and lateral pressure. In addition, the previous researches are mainly concerned with an isolated rectangular plate simply supported along the all edges, whereas actual ship plating is continuous across the transverse frames and heavy girders. In the present paper, a series of elastoplastic large deflection FEA on a continuous stiffened plate is performed and then clarify the characteristic of collapse mode and explain the effect of transverse compression.
Study on a Waypoint Tracking Algorithm for Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV)

A waypoint tracking algorithm(WTA) is designed for Unmanned Surface Vehicle(USV) in which water-jet system is installed for propulsion To control the heading of USV for waypoint tracking, the steering nozzle of water-jet need, to be controlled. Firstly, target heading is calculated by using the position information of waypoints input from the land control center. Secondly, the command for the steering nozzle of water-jet is calculated in real time by using the heading and the rate-of-turn( ROT) from magnetic compass, In this study, in order to consider the drift angle due to external disturbance such as wind and wave, the course of ground( COG) can be used instead of heading at higher speed than a certain value, To test the performance of newly-designed WTA, the tests were carried out in actual sea area near Gwang-an bridge of Busan. In this paper, the sea trial test results from WTA are analyzed and compared with those from manual control and those from commercial controller.
Study on the Estimation of Collision Risk of Ship in Ship Handling Simulator using Fuzzy Algorithm and Environmental Stress Model

Recently, many maritime accidents have been increased and the collisions due to human error are given a great deal of proportions out of them We develop the Real-time Collision Risk Monitoring System (CRMS) for the navigational officers to cope with the emergency situation promptly and thus to reduce the probability of casualty. In this study, the risk of collision and grounding is evaluated by two kinds of method. The first method is based on Fuzzy algorithm, which evaluates the risk of collision between traffic ships. The second method is based on Environmental Stress (ES) Model, where the total risk of collision and grounding is evaluated by the environmental stress felt by human. The developed real-time CRMS has been installed to the ship handling simulator system and its capabilities have been tested through simulator experiments.

This paper presents the design of high sensitive/broadband tag antenna for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in Ultra High Frequency(UHF) band. A proposed tag antenna size is
. The resonant frequency is 910MHz and bandwidth is about 900 MHz at -10 dB below. The measured return loss and directional pattern have been confirmed a good agreement with the calculation results. The read range of proposed tag antenna with chip is observed about 6.5 m and proposed tag antenna has been observed an average 0.5 m for more than read range of the commercial tag antenna.
Development of Screening Technology for Marine Waste Disposal

In order to effectively isolate the marine wastes with an effluent standard, the pretreatment process is required to isolate solid materials from the liquid-solid mixed wastes. The more effective the pretreatment becomes, the more processing capacity of posttreatment will be improved and process facilities will be downsized. In this paper, we suggested the vibrating reverse-slant screen, investigated the optimal vibration frequency and vibrator installation angle for the separation of the liquid solid mixed wastes. Several experiments for separation efficiency were conducted under the condition of various vibration frequency(
, 5Hz interval) and vibrator angle(
) considering the crack of screen. The screen inclination angle is set up the gradient as
through the preliminary experiments. Also, we made two types of screen(respectively rectangle and square screen). The separation device has shown the optimum efficiency at vibrator angle
and vibration frequency 60Hz, and has no relation with the shape of screen. And the proposed technology is verified by comparing with quantity of suspended solids before and after filtration.
Application based on the strictly combined method of BEM and CADMAS-SURF

The hybrid numerical model is developed by combining BEM that can calculate the wave motion rapidly under the potential theory and CADMAS-SURF that solves Navier-Stokes equations for the free surface variation near the structure, In the hybrid model the calculation of wave motion in a wide field of wave reflection for deep water area is conducted by BEM but for shallow water area by CADMAS-SURF. Especially the hybrid model can calculate random wave motions for long term period more rapidly with almost similar accuracy than the calculation of wave motion which was carried out by CADMAS-SURF only. An Empirical Study on the Impacts of the Knowledge Sharing Intention on the Use of Knowledge Management System in Maritime and Port Organizations

Through the study of precedent researches, this study classified the influential factors of knowledge sharing intention into the support of CEO, self-worth, trust, and incentive. Then, this study conducted a survey among the workers, who are in maritime and port sectors, to illuminate how the forementioned variables influence on the knowledge sharing intention and the usage of knowledge management system The analysis of the result illustrated that the support of CEO, self-worth, trust appeared to be the influential factors of knowledge sharing intention, and that incentive and the knowledge sharing intention appeared to influence the usage of knowledge management system. This study aims to contribute to proposing a successful forthcoming implementation of a knowledge management system, by suggesting the influential factors to increase its usage to the maritime and port organizations planning to implement it before they actually installs it.
Deployment of Yard Cranes Considering Storage Plans in Container Terminals

The main function of a container terminal is to load container freights into vessels and discharge them from vessels. The container terminal needs to utilize its resources effectively in order to improve the productivity of it. This study deals with the deployment model for yard cranes whose type is RMGC (rail mounted gantry crane). We develop a mathematical model for the deployment of yard cranes. The model considers not only the deployment but also the storage plans. It could be divided into two cases according to whether inter-block movements of yard cranes are allowed or not, during the same period Numerical examples are solved and analyzed to validate the model. Then, additional experiments are performed to compare the performance of the model with that of a previous model without the re-deployment of yard cranes.
A Study on Competition Structure among Domestic Container Ports

Busan port, which had ranked at 3rd busiest port following Singapore and Hong Kong in 2002, has been nudged out of 5th place. Growth of China ports threatens Korea ports to be a hub port in Far East Asia. Therefore, Korea ports are needed to establish competitive strategies to overcome a crisis of local ports. In this paper, the question, `Who is my competitor?` is examined There is a different aspect between this work and many studies that has been done before, because the fore studies focused on the competitive factors or port efficiencies. Above all, the meaning of competition among ports has been summarized through existing literatures. Next. the competition structure among ports is researched, based 0/1 import-export traffic of five local ports including Busan.
