Tool Interference Avoidance in compound Surface Using solid Modeling Method
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 20~28
Compound surface modeling is widely used for die cavities and punches. A compound surface is defined in 3-D space by specifying the topological relationship of several anlytic surface elements and a sculptured surface. A constructive solid gemonetry scheme is employed to model the analytic compound surface. the desired compound surface can be accomplished by specifying topological reationship in terms of boolean relations between pimitives and the sculptured surfaces. Additionally, a method is presented for checking and avoiding the tool interference occuued in machining the compound surface. Using this method. the interference of concave, convex, and side region can be checked easily and avoided rpapidly
A Proposed Reduction Method for Vibatiton Analysis of Automobile Engine Crakshfts
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 29~37
High speed engines with high power are increasingly on demands and almost engines employ crankshafts Such problems as bending and torsional vibrations become the point at issue in crankshaft analysis and design. In this study to overcome the diffiiculty with the large amount of computation in finite element vibration analysis of a crankshaft, a reduction method based on influence coefficient and lumped parameter is presented. which reduces the computation amount effectively and can be used in vibrational analysis and design of any types of crankshafts Crank journal and pinparts are meodelled as elements with 6degrees of freedom per node. Crank web part is modelled using equivalent mass and stiffness matices . based up on lumped parameter and influence coefficient respectively to reduce total degrees of freedom considerablely. To confirm the scheme of the study the results are compared with the known data and they are coincident. Also a simple crankshaft is designed and manufactured for experiments. The calculated results using reduction method and the experimental results agree well The scheme of this study can be utilized in evaluation results agree well. A Study on In-Process Monitoring of Drill Wear by Acoustic Emission
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 38~45
This study was focused on the prediction of the approprite tool life by clarifying the correlation between progressive drill wear and AE signal. on drilling SM45C the following results have been obtained; RMSAE, AE CUM-CNTS had a tendency to increase slowly according to wear size, at 1000rpm, 150mm/min However, these increased suddenly in the range of 0.20~0.22mm wear, about 102 holes and had a tendency to go up and down until the drilling was impossible. The sudden increase of AE signals shows that something is wrong and it is closely connected with drill wear and chipping. It also makes the working surface bad From the above results, AE signals could be used to monitor the drill's condition and to determine the right time to change tools.
Influnce of machinability on the Tool life of ADI Materials in Drilling
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 46~56
Drilling tests were carried out austempered ductile castiron(ADI) to clarify the factors influencing the drilling characteristics of ADI material. The machinability of material was evaluated using high speed steel drill and cobalt contained drill of 6mm diameter. The spheroidal graphite cast iron materials were austenized at 90
for 1 hour and then wear was kept at 375
for 2 hours. Austempered ductile cast iron contains a great deal of retaine austenite which contributes to an improvement of impact strength, In this paper, machinability of ADI was investigated by drilling experimentation. The results obtained are as follows: a)Flank wear increases logarithmically with the increases of cutting time. b) Relation of flank wear and cutting force can be appiled to
= 925VB + 820 for the cutting suggested condition. c) Drilling hole number of about 2 times can be reduced more step feed than ordinary feed due to the high hardness of ADI material and hardness increasing ascribed to the martensite of retained austenite.
System Development for Automatic Form Inspecion by Digital Image Processing
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 57~62
Basically, the idea underlying most edge-detection technique is the computation of a local derivative operator used for edge detection in gray level image. This concept can be easily illustrated with the aid of object which shows an image of a simple lilght on a dark background, Using the gray level profile along a horizontal scan line of the image. the first and second derivatives of it were acquired. This study is to develop an automatic measuring system based on the digital image processing which can be applied to the real time measurement of the characteristics of the ultra-thin thickness. The experimental results indicate that the developed automatic inspection can be applied in real situation
A Pole-Assignment ACC System in the Peripheral End Milling Process
Chung, Sung-Chong ;
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 63~72
In order to regulate the cutting force at a desired level during peripheral end milling processes a feedrate override Adaptive Control Constraint (ACC) system was developed. The feedrate override function was accomplished through a development of programmable machine controller (PMC) interface technique on the NC controller, Nonlinear model of the cutting process was linearized as an adaptive model with a time varying process parameter. An integral type estimator was introduced for on-line estimation of the cutting process parameter, Zero order hold digital control methodology which uses pole-assignment concept for tuning of PI controllers was applied for the ACC system. Performance of the ACC system wsa confirmed on the vertical machining center equipped with fanuc OMC through a large amount of experiment.
Study on the Development of Sintered Carbide Roller Mold for Reflector(1st) -Analysis of Reflector Geometry and Design of Acute Angle Diamond Wheel System-
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 73~82
A simtered carbide roller mold for reflector which is used for coverof automobile lamp and beacon plate of highway has been developed. The geometry of sintered carbide roller mold has been determined from the analysis of reflector geometry. An acute angle diamond wheel and dressing system also has been designed and developed to manufacture the sintered carbide roller mold.
Experimental comparison on the noise characteristics of free and impinging jets
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 83~89
The objective of this study is to find experimentally the characteristics of the noise generated by the impinging jet on the normal plate, and also to compare the noise characteristics of the impinging jet with those of the free jet. The experiment is performed for the measurement of the noise specturm, the noise power, and the directivity for the free and impinging jets. From the experiment. it is found that the power of noises generated by the free jet as well as the impinging jet is proportional to the eighth power of the jet velocity through the circular converging nozzle, and that the noise power of the impinging jet is 15dB as high as one of the free jet when the plate distance is about within one to three times the nozzle diameter at the pressure ratio 1.39. The sound pressure level of the impinging jet depends upon the jet pressure and the plate distance. The plate distance with the maximum overall sound pressure level is increased with the jet pressure. The directivities with 1/3 octave band frequency for both the free jet and the impinging jet are greatly influenced by the convection effect.

Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 5, issue 2, 1996, Pages 90~97
The purpose of this study is the development of a lathe which can cut any pistons of oval shape with high speed, accuracy and precision by CNC (Computer Numerical Control) method. Yaxis which is the mechanism of position determination with high speed response has been added to the CNC lathe and ovality and profile has been cut under the synchronous control of C-Y-Z axes. In the case of ovality of ø 0.5mm. the productivity can be improved up to 1500rpm by high speed cutting than modeling method.
