A study on monitoring of milling tool wear for using the acoustic emission signals

This study is focused on the prediction of appropriate tool life by clarifying the correlation between progressive tool wear and AE(Acoustic Emission) signals, while cutting stainless steel by end mill on the machining center. The results of this study were that RMSAE tends to increase linearly along with the increase of the cutting speed, and it was more sensitive to depth of cut than to the variation of feed rate at the same cutting conditions, and RMSAE increases around 0.21mm flank wear hereby AE-HIT also increases. AE signals depend upon tool wear and fracture from the above results. Therefore, the AE signals can be utilized in order to monitor the tool condition.
Development of Shaft Straightening Machine with Springback Observer

In order to compensate for out-of-straightness of shafts, an automatic straightening process composed of an automatic measuring module, an automatic control unit and operating softwares was developed with a hydraulic press. The out-of-sraightness of each shaft was measured automatically in the measuring stage. An optimal pressure point was determined to minimize TIR value of the shaft according to press count of 3-points bending process. In the geometric adaptive control procedure, punch stroke and springback of the shaft were predicted by an observer using on-line measured values of press force and deflection amount I each press count. An automatic straightening machine was realized with the measuring module, the GAC module, PLD, IBM-PC and the operating software on the hydraulic press. the validity of the proposed straightening process was confirmed through a series of experiments with cam shafts.
A Fracture Mechanics Study on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behaviors in Aluminum Alloy Weldments

The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of welding residual stresses on the fatigue crack growth behavior of cracks located transverse to the weld bead. For this purpose, G. T. A (Gas Tungsten Arc) welding was performed on hte Al alloy 1100-O plate and the same initial crack is made on HAZ(Heat Affected Zone), weld metal and base meta respectively. Specimens were used CT(Compact Tension) specimens. Initial welding residual stresses were measured by using strai gage sectioning method. All specimens were tested under constant amplitude load with stress ratio R=0.1, It is possible to predict fatigue crack growth behaviors and the fatigue life, using numerical analysis together with distribution of initial residual stress and the values of C and m obtained from da/dN-ΔK
Dynamic Analysis of Vehicle Steering System Including Gear Backlash

The problem related to the rotational vibration at steering wheel end of passenger cars during high speed driving is investigated. to analyze vibration of steering wheel, a steering system of passenger car is modelled in twelve degrees of freedom including backlash effect of rack and pinion gear system. The one degree of freedom system with backlash in investigated by the analytical method. Consequently the skeleton curve and the frequency response curves are computed. The steering system is analyzed by the numerical simulation using the 4th order Runge-Kutta method, the obtained results are compared with the experimental data. Also the effects of the change of rack gear tooth stiffness and backlash on the acceleration level of steering wheel are investigated. As a result, it can be found that the acceleration level of steering wheel becames lower as the rack gear tooth stiffness becames higher, and that acceleration level becames high as the magnitude of backlash between rack and pinion gear increase.
Effects of Blankholding force and Vee-ring on the Blanking characteristics in Fine-Blanking Die

This study was performed the blankholding force and Vee-ring effects on blanking characteristics, such as maximum blanking force, burnish, dish-shape, hardness. etc. in fine-blanking die by the experimental method. Two types of aluminum (Al.1050-O, Al, 5052-H) Such as annealed and unannealed materials were used for the experiment. In order to get a hydrostatic pressure effect, the clearance was set to 0.5% of the thickness of strip, and the counter punch and stripper plate with Vee-ring was set-up. While this experiment was carry8ing out, the average blanking velocity was constant (37.5mm/sec). As a result of this study, we got a good surface roughness and a dimensions, the good squareness and the reduction of dish-shape could be obtained, and also the additional results obtained were such that the hardness of shear plane was increased and the maximum blanking force was reduce in the condition of Vee-ring height of 1.0~1.5mm, and blankholding force of 1200kg
A Study on the Cutting Resistance Characteristics of Hardended Steel according to Engagement Condition

This thesis is concerned with the study on the characteristics of the cutting resistance occurring in finish machining of hardened steels such as carbon tool steel and alloy tool steel by a ceramic tool with nose radius. For the purpose, the shape of cutting cross-section made at nose part of the tool was analyzed geometrically and the wear mechanism on the flank face of the ceramic tool is investigated. In order to investigate the characteristics of cutting resistance two categories of cutting conditions are suggested, along with geometrical analysis. One category includes the conventional cutting parameters such as feed and depth of cut, another containing new cutting parameters of thickness of cut and width of cut etc. Thickness of cut width of cut and area of undeformed chip section formed by the condition of engagement between workpiece and cutting tool are determined as the function of feed, depth of cut and nose radius of cutting too, And an effective approach angle is determined by depth of cut and nose radius.
A Study on the Improvement of Sculptured surface Sopography in Milling Operation by Using Tertiary Motion Attachment

The applicability of a new method, termed the whirling motion concept, for the improvement of the surface finish in milling three-dimensional sculptured surfaces has been investigated. A method for implementing this concept o conventional NC machines that utilize a suitably configured attachment has been proposed. The tool path equation for the ball-end milling process, based on the surface-shaping system, has been obtained. Both results of the computer simulation and the experiment verified the proposed approach.
An Experimental Study onthe Detection of Tool Failure I Face Milling Processes

In this paper present a new technique (strain-telemetering)for detection of coated tool failure in face milling processes. In the cutter body the strain signals received fro the transmitter is transformed in to frequency modulation(FM) signals in face milling processes. A receiver which is place near by the Vertical milling machine receives the FM signals, then the signals will be sent to a computer which determines whether th tool is failure. And machined surface of workpiece is detected by the SEM. In this paper, A on-line monitoring of the tool failure detection system based on the strain -telemetering apparatus has bee represented.
