Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 30~37
In this paper rapid prototyping and precision casting technology have been developed for the manufacturing of inlet gear box of an airplane, Rapid prototyping is a new prototyping technology that produces complicated parts directly from three-dimensional CAD data with a high efficiency and has been extensively applied to various manufacturing processes. In the present work Selective Lase Sintering(SLS) system is utilized in order to manufacture prototype of the inlet gear box. Prototyping technology using SLS is also investigated from the viewpoint of accuracy. Using the SLS master the casting products are manufactured through several processes such as : vacuum casting lost wax shell casting and investment cast-ing. The shrinkage characteristics of wax and cast iron in the casting procedures are considered and then reflected to the design procedure so that the accuracy of the product is improved consequently.
A Study on the Fracture behavior in Silicon Wafer using the Ultra-Precision Micro Positioning System
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 38~44
The background of this study lies in he investigation of the formation mechanism of ductile mode(nkanometer-size) chips of brittle materials such as fine ceramics glass and silicon. As the first step to achieve this purpose this paper intends to observe the micro-deformation behavior of these materials in sub
depth indentation tests using a diamond indentor. In this study it was developed Ultra-Micro Indentation. Device using the PZT actuator. Experimentally by using the Ultra-Micro Indentation device the micro fracture behavior of the silicon wafer was investigated. It was possible that ductile-brittle transition point in ultimate surface of brittle material can be detected by adding an acoustic emission sensor system to the Ultra-Micro Indentation appartus.
Tolerance allotment with Design Centering considering Assembly Yield
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 45~52
The purpose of this research was developing an integrated way to solve two typical tolerance optimization problem i.e. optimal tolerance allotment and design centering. A new problem definition design centering-tolerance allotment problem (DCTA) was proposed here for the first time and solved. Genetic algorithm and coarse Monte Carlo simulation were used to solve the stochastic optimization problem. Optimal costs were compared with the costs from the previous optimization strategies Significant cost reductions were achieved by DCTA scheme.

Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 53~59
Recently air pollution is increased according to increase of vehicle. So many countries are studying about compressed natural gas engine. Research on the development of CNG dedicated engine that has important meaning both as a clean fuel and an alterna-tive energy to reduce the exhaust emission from diesel engine are actively going on these days. In this study the character-istics of CNG engine was investigated and the engine performance experimented by changing the parameters such as boost pressure. The CNG engine performance and exhaust emission were measured by engine performance mode at maximum load condition with increasing the rpm in the range of 1,000-2,200rpm. The exhaust emission was also measured at D-13 mode and compared to the emission regulation.
AN ADVANCED DISTURBANCE REJECTION CONTROL FOR REPEATABLE RUNOUT IN DISK DRIVE SYSTEMS
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 60~67
An improved disturbance rejection control scheme is presented for minimizing the position error due to the repeatable runout disturbances in high density disk drive systems The proposed control algorithm is capable of attenuating repeatable disturbances which is one of the major detractors to hard disk drive quality and performance. This is achieved by a sys-tematic combination of an optimal feedback component and a feedforward preview component. The feedback component is designed where the emphasis is placed on robustness. The feedforward component is on the basis of a preview control comprised of a measured disturbance signals which leads to better disturbance rejection capabilites. The designed con-troller is applied as a plug-in module to a high density hard disk drive with a pre-existing conventional servo controller. Simulations have been carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of this control scheme in the reduction of the periodic disturbances.
A Study on RP Part Production Using Intersecting Circle Approximation Method
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 68~74
The STL file format is an approximation of 3-D model with triangular facets. STL is a standard input file format of Rapid Prototyping(RP) equipment In computer graphics a circle has been approximated with an inscribed polygon which causes an error between the real and approximated circles. In this study an intersecting polygon has been used to approximate the circle and applied to produce more accurate RP part. The newly proposed method shows it's excellence in part accuracy.
A Study on the Precision Cutting Characteristics for Different Cutting Edge Radii in Ductile Material
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 75~80
This paper deals with the precision cutting characteristics of mono-crystal diamonds poly-crystal diamonds and tungsten carbide tool on ductile material. The cutting tests were carried out under various uncut chip areas and 20
depth of engagement. The machinability in precision machining was discussed from the viewpoints of the normal cutting forces and the surface roughness of the workpiece. As the feed rate decreases the normal force difference for cutting edge radii appears to large. In various cutting edge radii the surface roughness difference when cut the copper which is ductile material than the aluminium alloy is large. As the same cutting condition the hardness value on cut surface with the diamond tool appears to be smaller than that of the tungsten carbide tool.

Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 81~87
A variable cutting speed control model was developed to be implemented for the flexible disk grinding process Control algorithm was based on the error referred by the discrepancy between current disk angle and intended one that are pro-posed to produce desired resulting depth of cut. Controller was implemented in two different aspect One was to initiate the control law from the beginning while the other was to activate as soon as the disk start to produce ground surface i.e. The beginning of the between edges stage. Several performance analysis were conducted comparing various process parame-ters such as cutting force disk angle depth of cut and disk speed with respect to process transition time Tentative results revealed that controller implemented from the earlier stages of the process showed better performance than the other revealed that controller implemented from the earlier stages of the process showed better performance that the other
Impedance Characteristics of an Expansion-Resonator Type Pulsation Attenuator(Attenuation on Flow and Pressure Ripple form a Hydraulic Piston Pump)
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 88~95
In this paper, an expansion-resonator type pulsation attenuator is proposed to absorb and attenuate flow an pressure ripple with high frequencies generated from hydraulic control systems. The basic principle of a pulsation attenuator proposed here is applied to propagation, reflection, absorption of pressure waves at the cross section of discontinuity and resonance in the pipeline. It has advantage of the compact size and high degree fo freedom for installation in hydraulic systems. The design scheme based on distributed parameter pipeline system with dissipative viscous compressible model is developed. To investigate the reduction of flow and pressure ripple with high frequencies produced by swash plate type axial piston pump, two kinds of attenuators are manufactured. It is experimently confirmed that the spectral intensity of flow and pressure ripple with high frequencies from the pump are reduced up to about 20
~30dB by using attenuators proposed here. The calculated results were in good agreement with the measured values. From there sults of this study, it is shown that an expansion-resonator type pulsation attenuator is effective in a wide frequency ranges to attenuate the flow and pressure ripple from hydraulic components.
A Study on the Coated Characteristics of Ceramic Tools
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 96~101
Ceramic, PCD and CBN tools are available for the difficult-to-cut-materials such as hardened carbon tool steel, stainless steel, Inconel 718 and etc.. Ceramic toolsare likely to be chipped and abruptly broken before the appearance of normal wear in turning. Ther2efore ceramic tools are suitable for continuous cut in turning not for intermittent in milling. In this study, TiN/TiCN multi-layer coated ceramic tools were found to restrain the chipping, breaking and early fracture and to increase the critical cutting speed owing to TiN/TiCN multi-layer coating in Arc Ion Plating of PVD method.
Local Map Building Using the information of a Range Finder
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 102~110
This paper presents an algorithm of local map building for autonomous robot navigation using LASER range finder information. We develop a model of sensor output for a LASER range finder, and obtain an output data of the LASER range finder for a given environment. From the output data, a local map is obtained through the following procedures: (1) filtering of output data to remove noisy and unnecessary data, (2) comparison of filtered data with the original data to restore useful data, (3) thickening of the map obtained from the restored data, and (4) skeletonizing of the thickened map to get a final local map. Through some simulation studies, a map is obtained from the LASER range finder information for a given indoor environment, and is compared with the environment.
Experimental study on stripping mechanism of tension controlled bolts
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 111~118
Over tightening experiments of the tension-controlled bolts are carried out and the stripping mechanism is reviewed base on the observed results. There are two modes of bolt failure due to the over tightening : one the fracture of the bolt the other the thread stripping Bifurcation between these two modes is rather delicate but it seems being related with the elastic flexibility of the bolt which depends upon the unused thread length. The fracture mode occurs in the bolts with good flexibility while the latter with bad one. According to the ISO Standard some meter coarse threads like M20 and M22 have the same pitch which causes bigger fastener to less resistance in shear and bending compared with the smaller one. however since UNC thread system adapts different pitch for different nominal diameter unified coarse threads show better stripping resistance than their corresponding meter threads.

Development of a Sensor Information Integrated Expert System for Optimizing Die Polishing
Journal of Manufacturing Technology Engineers, volume 9, issue 1, 2000, Pages 128~135
This paper presents a polishing expert system integrated with sensor information which can modify the polishing sequence and conditions initially determined by the system depending on the on-site polishing status. A practical system using AE sensor to detect the on-line polishing status is developed for the rotational polishing and the smoothly curved sur-face. Database and knowledge base for polishing processes are established by using the results of experiments and also expert's experience. Evaluations are performed for a die of headlight lamp by using both the sensor integrated expert sys-tem and the expert system without sensor. The test results show that the sensor integrated expert system provides more optimal polishing conditions since the proposed system takes advantage of on-line sensor information.
