The Effects of Marital Communication and Marital Intimacy on Psychological Well-being among Middle-aged Married Men and Women

This study provides basic materials that assist in marital counselling and marital therapy intervention through its analysis of the effects of marital communication and marital intimacy on psychological well-being and its systematic focus on middle-aged married men and women of social interest and importance. The subjects of this study were married men and women, aged 40 to 59, living in the metropolitan areas of Seoul and Kyeonggi; the study excluded those who were divorced, bereaved or whose last child was in over high school, but included those who were separated or in a second marriage. A total of 396 people, 134 men and 262 women, were included in the study. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, middle-aged married men recorded higher levels of marital communication and marital intimacy than middle-aged married women. While women showed higher levels of depression than men, there was no difference between men and women in terms of overall life satisfaction. Second, there were differences in marital communication, marital intimacy, and psychological well-being among middle-aged married men and women according to background variables. Third, marital communication and marital intimacy were shown to affect the life satisfaction of both middle-aged married men and women. Of the two, marital communication had more the influence. Marital communication also had the biggest influence on levels of depression among both middle-aged married men and women.
Financial Performance according to the Types of Financial Strategy in Elderly Households

The purpose of this study was to classify the financial strategies and investigate major determinants of the financial performance in elderly households. This study used the data of 4,577households with all ages and 1,255 elderly households were from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(2000, 2003). The data were analyzed by various statistical methods such as frequency, mean-test, Duncan's multiple range test, k-mean cluster analysis and regression. The major findings were as follows: First, the classified household financial strategy types were Residual(44.3%), Financial Assets(24.0%), Informal Institutional(19.7%), Diversified Portfolio(7.6%), Real Estate(4.5%). Second, the criteria of classification of the financial strategies were relative, not absolute. Third, elderly households that employed a financial assets had the greatest financial performance (62,320,000 won net gain). Households with all ages that employed a diversified portfolio strategy had the greatest financial performance (98,360,000 won net gain). Forth, the determinants of the financial performance were significantly different according to the types of financial strategy.
Student Personal Characteristics, Parent Attachment and Adjustment in College

The purpose of the present study is to explore two main research questions; whether or not there is a difference in student adjustment in college according to socio-demographics characteristics, and to analyze the effects of self-esteem, self-identity, interaction anxiousness, and parent attachment on the adjustment of college students. The results were as follows: First, students' adjustments in college showed significant differences according to gender, cramming for repeating a college entrance exam, living with their parents, college major, family income, and religion. Second, the self-esteem, self-identity, interaction anxiousness, and parent attachment of college students impacted the related adjustment. Self-identity was the most important factor for predicting the adjustment in College. Therefore, this result suggests that the programs of self-identity Improvement are needed for the adjustment in college life.
Effects of Parent-Adolescent Communication, Adolescent's Self-Esteem and Strategies in Peer Conflict Situations on Satisfaction with Peer Relationships among Korean Adolescents

This study investigates the effects of parent-adolescent communication, adolescent self-esteem, and strategies in peer conflict situations on the satisfaction of adolescents with their peer relationships. The subjects included students attending a girls' and a boys' middle school in Gongju City. Random sampling was used to pick a class from each of the three grades in the schools. 233 students, who's both parents were living, were used in the final analysis in an effort to examine the impacts of student communication with parents on student satisfaction with their friends. The findings were as follows: the subjects most often used the yielding type of conflict-resolving strategy, followed by the cooperating, compromising, dominating, and avoiding strategy-type. The girls showed a higher level of parent-child communication than the boys. Girls had high self-esteem and mostly adopted the cooperating type of conflict-resolving strategies, followed by the yielding, compromising, dominating and avoiding strategy-type. The boys mostly employed the yielding strategy type followed by the cooperating, compromising, dominating, and avoiding strategy-types. The results indicate that the satisfaction level with friends was high among those who used the avoiding strategy-type less and yielding strategy-type more. Girls were found to have high self-esteem and engaged in communication with their parents. The compromising, cooperating, and dominating types of conflict-resolving strategies did not exercise significant influences on their satisfaction with friends.
The Effect of Female Adolescent Body-Related Variables, Self-Esteem and Internal Control on Eating Disorder Behavior

This study purports to understand the direct and indirect effects between eating disorder behavior of female adolescents and their body-related variables(concerning the degree of diet regime, weight control, body satisfaction, and obesity), self-esteem and internal control, by checking three sub-categorized behavior of eating disorders of diet behavior, bulimia behavior, and eating control behavior. The sample group used for the study consisted of 190 female high school students and 292 female university students; measurement devices used for the study were those of body-related variables, self esteem and internal control, and eating disorder behavior; and data analysis was performed using
, t-test, Pearson's correlation, regression analysis and path analysis. The results are as follows. First, there is a significant difference between university students and high school students regarding their body satisfaction, weight control experience, and self esteem. University students are more satisfied with their body, have higher self esteem, and control their weight better than high school students. Second, diet behavior shows a correlation with the degree of diet interest, weight control experience, and body satisfaction. Body satisfaction and internal control proved to be correlated with bulimia behavior, while weight control experience, obesity, and self esteem were correlated with eating control behavior. Third, the variables that showed a direct influence on diet behavior as an eating disorder are diet interest, weight control experience, body satisfaction and obesity, in that the explanatory power of the variables is 60.7% with the highest mark on obesity. The variables that showed effects on bulimia are body satisfaction and internal control with an explanatory power of 2.8%. Indirect variables effecting bulimia include objects, diet interest, body satisfaction, and self esteem. The variable with a direct influence on eating control behavior was self esteem with and explanatory power of 4%, whereas the variables of objects, diet interest, body satisfaction, weight control experience, and internal control were all indirectly correlated with eating control behavior.
A Study on Financial Knowledge and Values of College Students: Classification and Analysis according to the Knowledge and the Values

This paper diagnoses the financial knowledge of the college students and their values on financial situation. Another emphasis is given to the classification of surveyed college students based on their financial knowledge and values and the financial traits of each classified group is also analyzed. Statistical analysis was conducted using Cronbach's
, factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple range test with total number of 733 questionnaires. Primary results of the research are as follows: First, overall score of financial knowledge was 62.65 points, showing the highest points in spending while lowest in savings and investment. Senior classes, students majoring in liberal arts, students with financial education and media experiences scored high points. Second, overall score of college students on financial values was 3.92, resulting in high points on credit and frugality but points on sharing with others were low. Thirdly, all surveyed students were classified into 4 types based on the mean scores on financial knowledges and values. Total 31.7% of students belonged to Type 1 where students scored high points on financial knowledge and values. Type 2 had about 22.4 % of students whose financial score was high but value score was low. Type 3 occupied 24.2% and this group scored low points on financial knowledge but high points on financial values. Type 4 occupied 21.8% and was a group of students whose scores for financial knowledge and values were low. Finally, Type 1 and 3 groups showed better desirable behaviors for financial management and expressed higher satisfaction status for finance than Type 2 and 4. Type 1 is a group of students whose subjective financial level was high. Monthly income was highest in Type 2 and financial stress was lowest in Type 1.
A Study on the Characteristics of Leisure Behavior and Preference for Leisure Environment of the Five-Day Workweek Company Employees according to Gender

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of leisure behavior and preference for leisure environment of the five-day workweek company employees according to gender for developing leisure facilities in residential community planning. The questionnaire survey was used. The subjects of questionnaire survey were 338 staffs of 7 companies, who were living in apartment complex. The questionnaire consisted of way of life about leisure, leisure necessity, actual condition and need of leisure spaces, and leisure satisfaction. Frequency, percentage, and mean,
, t-test, and factor analysis were used for data analysis. The major results were as follows. 1) In terms of leisure time in weekend, the available leisure time distribution, and leisure cost, there were not difference between men and women. 2) After five-day workweek, the men and women showed to increase their leisure activities and to engage in diverse forms of leisure. Also, they showed an increased desired ratios in participating in each leisure activities. 3) Leisure was necessary to strengthen the unity of family and cultivate the sentiment. 4) Even though current main area for leisure were in their house, men were likely to change them from in the house to around and near their house. And they needed leisure facilities which was closer to their house. 5) The degree of satisfaction of leisure facilities in residential environment was low and there were not difference between men and women. This result implicated to improve and develope leisure space and facilities near the residental environment for promoting leisure behavior of both women and men. In particular it is necessity to create the good atmosphere of leisure facilities for women.
Digital Stress of Consumers in Using Digital Goods

The purpose of this study is to find out the level of digital stress that people experience and to investigate the effects of socio-economic variables on that. To collect data, structured questionnaire was developed and 1,200 questionnaires were distributed through internet. There were 2 dimensions in this study to examine digital stress. First dimension was about the devices themselves: computers and the other digital goods. Second dimension was about the time digital stress occurring in consumers' decision-making process: purchasing and using. Based on Yeo&Kim(2004), sub-dimensions of purchasing and using aspects were chosen. 5 sub-dimensions in purchasing side were new technology, cost, variety of alternatives, warranty service, and informational problem 6 sub-dimensions in using field were mal(or impaired)-functioning. physical aspects, immaturity in use, pressure to use, addiction to use, and informational problem. As independent variables, sex, age, educational level, digitalization acceptability and computer usability were used. The overall level of digital stress was around the average point which was not as high as expected. Digital stress of purchasing was higher than that of using. First, in purchasing aspects, the level of digital stress was relatively high in cost, variety of alternatives and warranty service. Hence, clear communications with consumers about the distinctive aspects and cost of digital devices in market are needed. Secondly, in using side, mal-functioning and physical aspects were relatively more powerful stressors. In the other words, the more serious problems were not from the characteristics of individual consumers but from those of products. Producers should put their best efforts to reduce imperfection (defectiveness) and develop user-friendly digital devices. Also, users' individual efforts to overcome the problems that can be solved privately are necessary. Finally, it was discovered that sex and computer usability were very important variables on digital stress. To extend computer usability of consumers and get over digital illiteracy, it is essential to expand the paths to give chances for people to contact with computers and other digital goods. Still there are lots of people whore computer-illiterate or low-skilled at computers. In policies or educational programs made by government, communities, or schools, more attention should be paid to the digitally vulnerable groups.
Study on Consumer Purchase Behavior Based on Purchase Experience of Luxury Goods

This study explores diverse consumer characteristics pursuant to whether the consumers in question have purchased luxury goods, and it also explores the variables that tend to influence such purchases. Furthermore, the relationship between consumers' purchases of, propensity for and preference toward luxury goods is researched, and an analysis is also conducted on the degrees of influence that consumer purchases of luxury goods have on consumer propensity and preference for luxury goods. The results show that the experience of such purchases determines the diverse characteristics of consumers in such areas as age, expenditures and overseas travel. In addition, the propensity of consumers to buy luxury goods is related to the tendency toward trends, self-planning, rationality and economic efficiency, while the preference of consumers is linked to the tendency toward trends, self-realization and rationality. This study aims to analyze and understand the consumer group of college women in their 20s, and it also seeks to help establish policies that will provide consumer education so badly needed by such women who are or who will be the main players of their respective household economies and rates of consumption.
The Effects of Alphabet Knowledge on Korean Kindergarteners' Reading of Hangul Words

The purpose of this study was to investigate the causal relationship of kindergarteners' alphabet knowledge to their ability to read words, in connection with the features of the Korean alphabet 'Hangul'. A total of 289 children aged four to six from three kindergartens in Busan participated in the study. The main results are as follows. To begin with, the participants showed continuous development in the knowledge of consonant names, vowel sounds, the vowel stroke-adding principle, and the alphabet composition principle. Meanwhile, discontinuous development was found in the knowledge of consonant sounds and the consonant stroke-adding principle, which indicated that kindergartners could show differential speed in various sub-skills of literacy development. The kindergartners' naming of consonants developed before their recall of consonant sounds, and the knowledge of consonant sounds had an effect on the knowledge of vowel sounds. Children had difficulty in treating more complicated letters of the alphabet stroke-adding principle test, and eve syllables of the alphabet composition principle test. Most importantly, the children's alphabet knowledge was strongly related to their ability to read words written in Hangul, as kindergarteners with a greater knowledge of alphabet names, sounds, and principles were shown to read words better.
Study on the Development of Online Credit Consumer Education Programs for Teenage Consumers: A Comparison of Korean & Japanese Teenage Consumers

The purpose of this research is to analyze Korean and Japanese junior high school and high schools students to inquire into the attitudes these students have towards credit, the importance of credit related education, and the necessity of education on online credit. This will provide an insight into the problems associated with teenage credit related consumer education, and allow a solution to be brought up. The results of the research and the proposal are as follows. First, younger Korean teenagers are more passive in consumption than the same age group in Japan. Second, for Korean teenagers, the amount of allowance and savings were an important factor in the attitude towards credit. In Japan there was a discrepancy between gender groups in the attitude towards credit. Third, personal education sessions for teenagers and follow up is necessary. Fourth, since the current teenage population have been familiar with the internet all their lives, credit education should utilize this medium as a tool. Fifth, when looking into the requests Korean and Japanese young teenagers made on credit web sites, the contents and quality of information is more important than the outlook of the site itself. Sixth, there is a need to provide teenagers, who are accustomed to visual data, information, an experience opportunity, and access to related web sites.
