The Effect of Group Music Therapy on the Emotional Stabilisation and the Self-Efficacy of Juvenile Delinquents

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of group music therapy on the emotional stabilisation and Self-Efficacy of juvenile delinquents. The subjects, who were from age 15 to 19 as juvenile delinquents, received juvenile protection Order one (1) and three (3) or Order (4) and were placed in custody designated by the Gwang Ju Family Court. The 24 subjects were divided into the experimental group (N=12), and the control group (N=12) at random. The experimental group was given 14 group music therapy session for 90 minutes each, two times a week, and the control group was not given any. Emotional stabilisation and the Self-Efficacy scores for each adolescent was compared before and after the experiment. Statistical methods used for data analysis were mean, the standard deviation, and the ANCOVA. Results are as follows. The experimental group was significantly increased in emotional stabilisation compared with the control group. The experimental group was significantly decreased in aggressive behavior compared and in stress compared with the control group. The experimental group was significantly increased in self-efficacy compared, in self-confidence compared and in self control efficacy compared with the control group. These results suggest that group music therapy are positive effects on improving the emotional stabilisation and the Self-Efficacy of juvenile delinquents.
An Exploratory Study on the Elderly's Anxiety Towards Death and their Reactions to the Star-Wave Drawing

The purposes of this study were to examine if there is a relationship between elderly people's anxiety towards death and their reactions to the Star-Wave drawing, and to verify if the Star-Wave drawing was a good enough tool to measure elderly people's degree of death anxiety. The subject for this study were 307 elderly people (male 127, female 180) over 60 years of age with no physical and cognitive damage, who were residing in Geongsan city and attending colleges or welfare centers for the aged. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN(ver. 12.0) program, and factor analysis, correlation analysis, Chi-square test, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and
test were utilized. The results showed that factors showing different levels of anxiety towards death in the Star-Wave drawing were the total harmony of the drawing, drawing style, repetition of wave, size of the star, and location of the star. In particular, the group that drew the Star-Wave drawing with total harmony felt less anxiety towards death than the other group. Therefore, the results of this study suggested a possibility of the Star-Wave drawing to be used as a good tool that could diagnose the elderly's degree of anxiety towards death.
Internet Use Motivations and Problem Behaviors of Vocational High School Students according to Internet Addiction and Family System Type

The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in internet use motivations and problem behaviors among vocational high school students according to internet addiction and family system type. Five hundred vocational high school students from Daegu took part in the survey. The questionnaire survey consisted of an internet addiction self-assessment scale, a family system type scale, an internet use motivation scale, and a problem behavior scale. The data was analysed using MANOVA and Cronbach a, and the
test was used for post-hoc analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, the study found significant differences in adolescent internet use motivation according to internet addiction. Adolescents in the high dangerous user group showed higher communicative, experiential, and addictive motivations than adolescents in potentially dangerous and normal user groups. Also, there were no significant differences in informative motivation according to internet addiction. Regardless of internet addiction, adolescents tend to use the internet to search for information and to solve problems. Second, there were significant differences in adolescents' problem behaviors according to internet addiction. More specifically, adolescents who were in the high dangerous user group displayed more problem behaviors toward their body, family, school, and society than adolescents in the potentially dangerous and the normal user groups. Third, an adolescent's family system type significantly influenced his/her internet use motivation. Adolescents from an extreme family showed higher communicative and addictive motivations than adolescents from middle and balanced families. Fourth, there were significant differences in the problem behaviors of adolescents according to family system types. Adolescents from an extreme family showed more problem behaviors toward their body, family, school, and society than adolescents from middle and balanced families.
Effects of Internal Family Systems Therapy Program to Increase Ego-Identity of Middle-Aged Women

The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of an internal family systems therapy program aimed at increasing ego-identity of middle-aged women. The objectives of this program were for middle-aged women to differentiate the self of internal systems, to identify constraints impinging on an individual part, to release constraints impinging on an individual part, to harmonize the internal family, and to enhance ego-identity. 31 middle-aged women ranged in age from 40 to 60. Two groups were identified as equivalents for the study in the pre-test. The program of this experimental group was implemented twice a week for 120 minutes per each session over a 6-week period. The pre-test(Aug. 29. 2006), the post-test(Oct. 20. 2006) and the follow-up test(Nov. 20. 2006) were implemented in order to verify the effectiveness of the programs. The participants who were absent more than three times in the program were excluded from the post-test and follow-up test. Eventually, the data in 31 persons(15 for the internal family systems therapy, 16 for the control group) were analyze to verify the effectiveness of the program. The instruments used in the study were the ego-identity scale. The data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA, simple main effect, post-hoc t-test, means and standard deviations. And the program was from Sep. 5. to Oct. 20. 2006. The findings of the study were as follows: The internal family systems therapy program had significant effects on enhancing the ego-identity. There was a large increase of the ego-identity in the intervention group, compared with control group at post treatment and follow-up after 1 month which indicated the continuity of intervention effect. However, in the control group, there were no changes according to the time.
Marital Conflict and Satisfaction - The Moderating Effect of Conflict-Coping Strategies

This study investigated the moderating effects of conflict-coping strategies between marital conflict and satisfaction according to gender and marital period. The subjects of this study were 178 couples from Cheongju who have been married less than fourteen years. For husbands and wives who have been married less than 7 years, nothing moderated the interaction between marital conflict and satisfaction. However, for husbands who have been married between 8 and 14 years, their conflict withdrawal moderated the interaction between marital conflict and satisfaction. For their wives, their conflict-expression strategy and their husbands' conflict-expression strategy moderated the interaction between marital conflict and satisfaction.
Counseling Services and Work Conditions Perceived by Counselors in Healthy Family Support Centers

The present study investigated counseling services and work conditions perceived by counselors in Healthy Family Support Centers. Questionnaire survey by mail was used to collect data from 32 counselors in Healthy Family Support Centers. Major findings of this study were as follows. First, many counselors in Healthy Family Support Centers perceived work load of counseling services heavily though they thought counseling work attractive and they would keep on working. Second, many counselors had a positive view of work conditions as a workplace but not a few of them complained about physical work conditions including poor facilities like lack of counseling room space in Centers. In addition to this, many suggestions were proposed to improve the counseling services and work conditions perceived by counselors in Healthy Family Support Centers.
Adjustment of Single Parent Family - The Buffering Effect of Family Resilience

This study explored the buffering effect of family resilience between family stress and adjustment of single parent family based on family resilience approach. Results of the study were as followed: First, single parents who had a lower level of family stress and a higher lever of family resilience reported a higher level of family adjustment. Second, family stress especially economic stress and relational stress influenced negatively on adjustment of single parent family. Family belief system, organizational pattern and communication processes of the three sub-factors of family resilience influenced positively on family adjustment. However the sub-factors of family resilience had more powerful effects than family stress. Third, family belief system, organizational pattern and communication processes of the three sub-factors of family resilience had a moderating effect between family adjustment and psychological stress and between family adjustment and relational stress. Especially the three sub-factors of family resilience had a buffering effect between family adjustment and relational stress. The results of this study had important implication for theory, research, and practice. The study showed that adjustment of single parent family could be significantly explained by family resilience rather than family stress. Accordingly strength perspective-based intervention focused on family resilience would be more effective than deficit perspective-based intervention based on family stress.
A Study on the Elderly Workers' Psychological Well-being - An Application of the Demand-Control-Support Model

This study examined the differences of elderly workers' psychological well-being according to gender and explored the variables which account for their psychological well-being. Paid laborers aged 60 or older(eight-five men and nine-eight females) were interviewed. The psychological well-being of male workers was higher than that of the female workers. The control level of activity and family support were the variables that explained the psychological well-being of male paid workers. The higher the control level of activity was, and the more support given from family, the higher the psychological well-being scores they showed. Educational level, demand level of activity, and material reward determined the psychological well-being of female workers. The higher their educational level was, the lower the demand level of activity was, and the fewer rewards they received from paid work, the higher their psychological well-being was.
The Effects of Employees' Gender Role Attitudes, Job Involvement, and Family Involvement on Work-Family Balance

This study examined the effects of employees' gender role attitudes, job involvement, and family involvement on their work-family conflicts, work-family facilitation, and utilization of family-friendly corporate policies. Data was collected from 377 full-time married workers from 262 large (more than 300 employees) and 100 small (fewer than 300 employees) private sector companies. The questionnaire's measurements were based on recommendations from the literature review. The questionnaire consisted of the gender role attitude scales, job and family involvement scales, work-family conflict and facilitation scales, and questions pertaining to the employee's utilization of family-friendly corporate policies. The SPSS 12.0 statistical package was used to analyze the collected data. The study found that employees showed more or less egalitarian gender role attitudes and that they were more involved in their family than their job. The employees' responses showed a low rate of utilizing family-friendly policies, but employees from large companies reported a higher utilization of family-friendly policies than those from small companies. There were also gender differences in employees' gender role attitudes, work and family involvement, and utilization of policies. Male workers held more traditional gender role attitudes, had higher levels of job involvement, and had higher rates of utilization of policies than female employees. Meanwhile, employees with children exhibited more traditional gender role attitudes and higher rates of utilization of policies than those without children. Finally, serial hierarchical regression analyses revealed that employees' more egalitarian gender role attitudes and higher job and family involvement predict higher work-family facilitation, while their gender role attitudes and job and family involvement have no significant influence on work-family conflicts. Also, employees from large companies with high job involvement will have significantly higher utilization rates of family-friendly corporate policies.
A Short-Term Longitudinal Study on Infant and Mother Interaction

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in infant-mother interactions and to measure infant-mother interaction, mutuality, and reciprocity at the 2nd and 6th postnatal monthperiods. Infant-mother interaction was assessed in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings in the 2nd and 6th postnatal months, by filming unstructured free play in the home and analyzing 28 of these infant-mother film recordingsusing two trained observers. This study can be summarized in five points. First, the separate frequency distribution of each category in MIIBR's maternal behavior was as follows: the frequencies of vocalization category, the kinesthetic exercise & physical contact category, the physical caregiving category, and theuse of play tool category. These all showed changes in the 6th postnatal month compared to the 2nd postnatal month. Second, the separate frequency distribution of each category in MIIBR's infant behavior was as follows: the frequencies of physical behavior category, the vocalization category, and the play behavior category. These also all showed changes in the 6th postnatal month compared to the 2nd postnatal month. Third, the mutuality and reciprocity of mother interaction decreased in the 2nd postnatal month compared to the 6th postnatal month. Fourth, mutuality and reciprocity in the infant interaction increased in 2nd postnatal month compared to the 6th postnatal month. Fifth, mutuality and reciprocity in the infant-mother interaction increased in 2nd postnatal month compared to the 6th postnatal month. In conclusion, it is evident that infant-mother interactions change over time. This study bears particular significance in setting a foundation for the theoretical basis of the interaction between infant and mother by observation.
A Study to Improve Service System through the Analysis of Needs and Problems of Community Welfare Center and Management Office in Permanent Rental Housing Complex

Permanent rental housing which is entirely financed by the Government is welfare housing for those who fall within the lowest income bracket. This type of housing is intended for use as rental housing on a long-term basis. At present, there are about 190,000 permanent rental housing units in Korea. The purpose of this study is to suggest the implications to improve the management and welfare service system of permanent rental housing. For this, qualitative data were collected by using the in-depth interview with staffs of community welfare center and management office of five permanent rental housing complexes and two times of advisory committee meeting with housing and social welfare experts. To analyze the data gathered in this study, the constant comparative method of data analysis was used. Conflicts between the management office and social welfare center of permanent rental housing could be classified into two aspects; personal and operational. Main reasons for the conflicts between two institutions were identified such as attitude of management office staffs, lack of cooperation, current administrative system, lack of management resources such as space and operation cost, and so on. Based on the results, some implications including institutional support and social complementary cooperation were suggested for improvement of management and welfare service system for the residents of permanent rental housing.
