Kataoka, Yasuhiro ; Takayama, Masakazu ; Matsushima, Yoshitarou ; Anazawa, Yoshihisa ;
Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 1~8
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.1
Surface permanent magnet-type vernier motors with three magnet array-type rotors (parallel magnetized type, repulsion type, and Halbach type) are compared based on the pull-out torque. It was clarified that increasing the rotor radius increases the pull-out torque at a fixed three-phase alternating voltage. The mechanism for the pull-out torque increase on each magnet array type was different, when the effects of the increase were analyzed based on an induced electromotive force and a synchronous reactance. As a result, the design of the Halbach-type rotor was found to be especially effective for achieving high pull-out torque, because this array type achieves a large induced electromotive force
and a small synchronous reactance

Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 9~15
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.9
This paper presents a uniform analytical model by energy method and Fourier series expansion to analyze detent force in uneven magnetic field for permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM). The model reveals that detent force in long-primary type is mainly influenced by non-ideal distribution of permanent magnet magnetic motive force, while nounified air-gap permeance makes a great impact on detent force of short-primary type. Hence, magnetic field similarity of motor design techniques referring rotary counterpart are adopted. For long-primary type novel method of splitting edge magnets is proposed to reduce end effects force, and optimal widths of edge tooth in short-primary type also verify the effectiveness of magnetic field similarity. The experimental results validate finite element analysis results.

DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.16
This paper presents the analysis and optimization of air-core permanent magnet linear synchronous motor with overlapping concentrated windings to achieve high thrust density, high thrust per copper losses and low thrust ripple. For the motor design, we adopt equivalent magnetizing current (EMC) method to analyze the magnetic field and give analytical formulae for calculation of motor parameters such as no-load back EMF, dynamic force, thrust density and thrust per copper losses. Further, we proposed a multi-objective optimization by genetic algorithm to search for the optimum parameters. The design optimization is verified by 2-D Finite Element analysis (FEA).

Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 23~30
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.23
This paper proposes a parametric model for inter-turn fault detection in a fault-tolerant permanent-magnet (FTPM) machine, which can predict the effect of the short-circuit fault to various physical quantity of the machine. For different faulty operations, a new effective stator inter-turn fault detection method is proposed. Finally, simulations of vector-controlled FTPM machine drives are given to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, showing that even single-coil short-circuit fault could be exactly detected.

Ahn, Jin-Woo ;
Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 40~44
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.40
This paper presents a design and characteristics analysis of novel 2-phase 4/3 switched reluctance motor (SRM) with short flux path for an air-blower application. The desired air-blower is unidirectional application, and requires a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone. In order to get a wide positive torque region without torque dead-zone during phase commutation, asymmetric inductance characteristic with non-uniform air-gap is considered. The proposed motor could be started at any rotor position with high efficiency drive. The proposed 2-phase 4/3 SRM is verified by finite element method analysis.

DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.45
This paper presents design of induction motor in very low temperature for LNG main cargo pump and comparison of two motors. One is the motor for using in room temperature and another is the motor for using very low temperature. This paper designs with Equivalent circuit Method and uses Finite Element Method to analysis. The motor for very low temperature considers variation of coil resistivity due to temperature change and compare torque characteristic with the motor for room temperature. Design element of motor for very low temperature considers resistivity variation following temperature change on going through this paper. The result shows that two types of motors are almost same torque curve characteristic even though they are not the same environment.

Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 51~56
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.51
With the active development of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), the application of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) has been expanded. As wide driving region of IPMSM for electric vehicle (EV) traction motor is required, many studies are conducted to improve characteristics of a motor in both low and high-speed driving regions. A motor in high-speed driving region generates (produces) large stress to the rotor. Thus, the rotor needs to be designed considering the mechanical safety. Therefore, in this paper, we conducted stress analysis and electromagnetic analysis to determine the centerpost's distance which is considered important during the design of IPMSM for EV traction motor in order to secure mechanical safety and satisfy specifications of output requirement.

Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 57~64
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.57
The functional characteristic of LISN circuit, which is used for measurements of conductive noise in mains power line, is basically related to frequency characteristics of passive elements like inductors used in the circuit as well as the frequency response of inductors is highly related to the resins used in the varnishing process. The significant problem in determination of an inductor's frequency characteristic is the intrinsic resistance, inductance and parasitic capacitance. In this triplet, the parasitic capacitance is the major limiting factor of inductor's frequency range. This capacitance depends on inductor design parameters and materials filling the spaces of coil like resin and its coherency after curing process. In this paper, two similar inductors were designed and built. The first inductor was not varnished while the second one was varnished with VPI technology. VPI, or Vacuum, Pressure, Impregnation technology is one of the most reliable methods performing good insulating conditions for electrical circuits and windings based on resins. The measured results show that implying varnishing technology does not significantly affect the frequency response. However, due to mechanical solidity aspects and improved environmental protection, it is better to varnish the inductors.

Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 69~76
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.69
This paper is concerned with speed tracking control problem for permanent-magnet synchronous drives (PMSM) in the presence of an variable load torque and unknown model parameters. The disturbance of speed control caused by inaccuracy of model parameters has been investigated. A load torque observer has been proposed to observe the load torque and estimate the disturbance caused by inaccuracy of model parameters. Both inertia and friction coefficient are identified in gradient descent approach. The stability condition of the observer has also been studied. Furthermore an improved feed-forward control has been introduced to reduce the speed track error. The proposed control strategy has been verified by both simulation and experimental results.

Lee, Sang-Hun ; Ahn, Jin-Woo ;
Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 97~103
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.97
This paper describes the characteristics of Electronic Throttle Controller (ETC) module in BLDC motor without the hall sensor for detecting a rotor position. The proposed ETC control system, which is mainly consisted of a BLDC motor, a throttle plate, a return spring and reduction gear, has a position sensor with an analogue voltage output on the throttle valve instead of BLDC motor for detecting the rotor position. So the additional commutation information is necessarily needed to control the ETC module. For this, the estimation method is applied. In order to improve and obtain the high resolution for the position control, it is generally needed to change the gear ratio of the module or the electrical switching method etc. In this paper, the 3-phase switching between successive commutations is adapted instead of the 2-phase switching that is conventionally used. In addition, the position control with a variable PI gain is applied to improve a dynamic response during a transient period and reduce vibration at a stop in case of matching position reference. The mentioned method can be used to estimate the commutation state and operate the high-precision position control for the ETC module and the high response characteristics. The validity of the proposed method is examined through the experimental results.

The wind farm in the model system is connected to a multi machine power system which is composed of 4 synchronous generators and a load. Simulation analyses have been carried out to investigate the performance of the controller using real wind speed data. It is concluded that the load frequency of the system can be controlled smoothly.

Journal of international Conference on Electrical Machines and Systems , volume 2, issue 1, 2013, Pages 120~126
DOI : 10.11142/jicems.2013.2.1.120
The main aim of this paper is to expound high-efficiency operation of Switched Reluctance Generator (SRG) based on the current waveform. For this purpose, theoretical analysis of the copper loss and iron loss of the system is done first. Then, necessary simulation is done to find the variation trend of the copper loss and iron loss with the variation of the current waveform at the same output power. Finally, the best current waveform which can make the system operate with high efficiency is obtained by considering the influence of these two kinds of loss. In order to verity the simulation results, the experimental platform of DC motor-SRG is built and the modified angle position control (APC) method which can specify the current shape optionally is presented. By comparing the system efficiency at the three kinds of typical current waveform, the correctness and feasibility of the theory is verified. The proposed method is simple, reliable, and easy to achieve.
