High Frequency Approximation for Earthquake-Induced Hydrodynamic Loads in Rigid Stroage Tank

The present paper describes an approximation for estimation of earthquake-induced hydrodynamic loads in rigid storage tank which accelerated in horizontal direction. The storage tank is vertically cylindrical, and the sectional shape may be circular, rectangular or irregular. The solution for harmonic excitation is studied based on velocity potential theory, and then the time domain solution for earthquake is obtained by using design response spectrum. As a result, earthquake load is influenced primarily by the inertia force of high frequency effective mass of the storage tank, responding to the characteristics of design response spectrum, tank sectional shape, and the ratio of tank base length to depth. Earthquake-induced hydrodynamic loads in rigid storage tank can be effectively obtained by using the high frequency approximation method in case of quite large, or small ratio of the tank base length to water depth.
Over-Strength of Low-Rise RC Frame in Low Seismic Zone

The seismic over-strength factor Ω is evaluated for 4-story reinforced concrete buildings in Korea, which has low seismic intensity. For this study, the seismic load suggested in' Aseismic guideline research- phase ll' (in Korea) is used. When 3D study-models are designed, span length and bay number are varied and accidental torsional moment is considered. And the models are analyzed by push-over analysis, in which external and internal frame are connected by rigid-link. As a result of numerical experiments, Ω is increased as the bay number or span length is increased. Because, by the including of accidental torsional moment in designing process, the increased ratio of strength of external columns is larger than the increased ratio of span length or bay number. And this makes the failure mode of model closer or strong-column and weak-beam mechanism.
Earthquake Resistant Design Critieria for Cylindrical Liquid-Storage Steel tanks

While the codifying works or the earthquake resistant design codes for buildings and bridges have been carried out progressively, such works for tank structures are still at the beginning steps. In case of the collapse of tank structures under seismic actions, substantially severe damages are expected due to the spillage of tank contents in addition to the direct economic losses of tanks and contents. Therefore not only the analysis and verification methods for the dynamic behavior of tank structures but also the measures of minimizing the damage propagation should be included in the codes for tank structures. In this paper the design concepts and principles, the analysis and verification methods as well as the measures against the damage propagation are set forth, which are mandatory for the preparation of the earthquake resistant design codes for cylindrical liquid-storage steel tanks.
Ductility Demand of Precast Coupled Shear Wall

This study presents a simplifled calculation method for required ductility of coupling beams in precast coupled shear walls at preliminary seismic design stages. Deflection of precast coupled shear walls based on a continuum approach is combined with inelastic gap opening of horizontal connection of panels to provide a relationship between the system-level ductility and the element-level ductility in a precast coupled shear wall. The equation proposed herein for ductility requirement for coupling beams shows that higher stiffness and lower strength of coupling beams result in high ductility reuqirement. The equation also shows that the ductility requirement is proportional to the degree of gap opening of the story in question. However, the coupling beam ductility in higher stories are not affected by gap openings of horizontal connections of panel.
Quasi-Static Test for Seismic Performance of Circular Hollow RC Bridge Pier

Because of relatively heavy dead weight of concrete itself and unavoidable heat of massive concrete in bridge piers, circular hollow columns are widely used in Korean highway bridges. Since the occurrence of 1995 Kobe earthquake, there have been much concerns about seismic design for various infrastructures, inclusive of bridge structures. It is, however, understood that there are not much research works for nonlinear behavior of circular hollow columns subjected to eqrthquake motions. The objective of this experimental research is to investigate nonlinear behavior of circular hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers under the quasi-static cyclic load, and then to enhance their ductility by strengthening the plastic hinge region with glassfiber sheets. Particularly for this test, constant 10 cyclic loads have been repeatedly actuated to investigate the magnitude of strength degradation for the displacement ductility factor. Important test parameters are seismic design, confinement steel ratio, axial force and load pattern. It is observed from quasi-static tests for 7 bridge piers that the seismically designed columns and the retrofitted columns show better performance than the nonseismically designed colums, i.e. about 20% higher for energy dissipation capacity and about 70% higher for curvatures.
Quasi-Static Tests for Seismic Performance of Circular RC Bridge Piers

Eight RC bridge plers have been made on a 1/3.4 scale model and have been tested in a quasi-static cyclic load so as to investigate their seismic performance. The ultimate objective of this experimental study is to investigate the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete plers, which have been widely used for urban transportation facilities in Korea. Improtant test parameters are hoop ratio, axial load, load pattern, and etc. And noninear behaviors of test columns have been evaluated through their yield and ultimate strength, energy dissipation, ductility and load-deflection characteristics under quasi-static cyclic loads. From the quasi-static tests on 8 bridge piers, it is concluded that energy dissipation, ultimate strength and curvature for a given displacement factor
are higher for the seismically designed columns than for the nonseismically designed columns.
Resonance Phenomenon according to the relationship between Span Length of the Bridge and Effective Beating Interval of High-Speed Train

Resonance of the bridge can be occurred with the coincidence between a natural frequency of the bridge and a crossing frequency of moving loads which is determined from the speed and effective beating interval of the vehicle. In case of the railway bridge, the effective beating interval of the vehicle is fixed under the passage of specific trains. In the present study, resonance and cancellation of the bridge subjected to moving high-speed train are analyzed with the variations of span length. A steel-concrete composite railway bridge is idealized by the combinations of plate elements and space frame elements. High-speed train is idealized with moving constant forces and a 3-dimensional full modelling. From analyzing dynamic responses of D.M.F of vertical displacement, maximum vertical acceleration of the slab, and end rotation according to the variations of span length of the bridge, design criteria of span length of the bridge which satisfies dynamic safety is discussed.
Dynamic Non-Linear Analysis of Ocean Cables Subjected to Earthquakes

In the previous
, a geometrically non-linear finite element formulation of spatial cables subjected to self-weights and support motions was presented using multiple noded cable elements and how to determine the initial equililbrium state of cables was addressed. In this paper, in order to perform dynamic non-linear analysis of ocean cables subjected to support motions and earthquakes, a numerical method to calculate Morison forces and incorporate effects of earthquake motions is presented based on the Newmark method. Challenging example problems are presented in order to investigate dynamic non-linear behaviors of ocean cables subjected to support motions and earthquake loadings.
Non-Liner Analysis of Shear Beam Model using Mode Superposition

To analyze the dynamic behavior of structure, direct integration and mode superposition may be utilized in time domain analysis. As finite number of frequencies can give relatively exact solutions, mode superposition is preferable in analyzing structural behavior. In non-linear analysis, however, mode superposition is seldom used since time-varying element stiffness changes stiffness matrix, and the change of stiffness matrix leads to the change of essential constants - natural frequencies and mode shapes. In spite of these difficulties, there are some attempts to adopt mode superposition because of low cost compared to direct integration, but the result is not satisfactory. In this paper, a method using mode superposition in non-linear analysis is presented by separating local element stiffness from global stiffness matrix with the difference between linear and non-linear restoring forces to the external force vectors included. Moreover, the hysteresis model changing with the relative deformation in each floor makes it possible to analyze non-linear behavior of structure. The proposed algorithm is applied to shear beam model and the maximum displacement is compared with the result using direct integration method.
Failure Pattern of Space Frame Pier Structures and Simple Check Method for Seismic Performance

In order to check the necessity of seismic reinforcement for a great number of existing structures effectively, it might be desirable to introduce the multi-step seismic evaluation system. This paper presents close relationships between shear-to-moment capacity ratio of a member and seismic performance of structures concerned through the failure mechanism investigation in the view of geological and structural characteristics. Based on it, the simple seismic performance evaluation method has been proposed and its effectiveness was verified by comparing with the damage condition of structures damaged under Hyogo-Ken Nambu Earthquake.
