A Study on the Problem and Improvement of Safety and Maintenance Management

In order to build an effective management system for structures and to propose national policy and vision for advance of safety and maintenance management, 'Fundamental Scheme of Safety and Maintenance Management for Structures' has been established and promoted. As developed countries adopt preventive maintenance management, which is preventive as well as aggressive repair/strengthening for structures, it is needed to introduce life-cycle analysis method for improvement of economical efficiency. Therefore, this paper presents not only analysis of domestic conditions and problems related to system for safety and maintenance management, policies and costs for structures but an improvement plan.
Stability Analysis of Highway Tunnel and Railway Tunnel According to Section Shape

The number of railway tunnel design is increasing recently compare to a great number of highway tunnel design which had increased with a lot of highway construction in the 70's and 80's. Therefore, there is more or less difference of time between highway tunnel and railway tunnel. In this paper, numerical analysis on two kinds of tunnels, such as two-forked road highway ventilation tunnel and double track railway tunnel with 4.3m of center line, in cases of with support materials condition and without support materials condition were conducted. Finally, stability of two kinds of tunnels were compared and analyzed through comparing of principal stresses and deviator stresses in the near base rock of tunnels using results of numerical analysis.
A Study on Method for The Reduction of Decreasing Strength of Concrete When Welding the Connection Part of Composite Structure Consist of Steel and Concrete

Recently, modular system are popular in construction fields, and they are increasing their marcket share. To compare modular units, bolting and welding are most popular methods. However, the temperature around a welded part might be over than 1,300
and the composite member might be exposed tp the direct welding heat about 20,000
. This high welding heat makes decrease of the concrete strength. If the concrete strength seriously decreases, it can affect the behavior and safty of a structure. On this study, To prevent of concrete strength decreases by welding heat, we suggested method of to insert between steel and concrete.
Performance Evaluation of Structure Strengthening Using Sprayed FRP Technique

The sprayed FRP strengthening technique is combining the Glass fiber and Polyester resin in open air and spraying randomly at concrete's surface with high-speed compressed air. Then it strengthens the structures with a new technique evaluated the structural performance. We applied it to concrete beam and tested for flexural strength, depended on Korea Standard(KS F 2408). Then based on the result of flexural strength, the properties were proposed that applying to structures. Based on the experiment, we have evaluated structural performance by the experiment. 1/5 scale prestressed concrete I-beam were made by Korean Highway's typical drawing in 1993. With these test results, 49.8% increased in flexural strength, improvement of the behavior of serviceability state, and strengthening was surely effective for controlling deflection and crack of structure. Consequently, it can be summarized that Sprayed FRP technique has prospect to improve the performance of structure.
Flexural Vibration Characteristics of Prestressed Concrete Girders due to Changes in Prestress Forces

In this study, several flexural vibration characteristics of prestressed concrete girders due to changes in prestress forces are experimentally analyzed. In order to achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented. First, several methods to extract vibration response features from output-only signal are selected. Next, a large-scaled prestressed concrete girder model is constructed to analyze relation between the prestress forces and the vibration features in the prestressed concrete girder. Then acceleration responses are measured from the girder for several prestress force scenarios. Finally, vibration characteristics of the prestressed concrete girder due to change in prestress force are experimentally analyzed. The values of features extracted by the selected methods are reduced due to prestress-loss. Especially, the value of features are linearly reduced in the early prestress-loss.
A Study on Wheel Load Distribution Factors of Skew Steel Box Girder Bridges

Firstly the problems of existing foreign code concerning wheel load distribution factor for skew box girder bridges have been examined, and the main parameters which have effects on wheel load distribution factors are evaluated in this study. Further finite element analyses on various skew steel box girder bridges are carried out. Based on the analysis results, formulas to determine wheel load distribution factors are proposed using multiple regression analysis. It is found when using the proposed formulas in this study weak points of existing specifications could be improved and also time spent at structural analysis should be saved a lot, so that the validity and practicality could be verified.
Load-Carrying Capacity Evaluation of the Composite Beam Strengthened by Multi-Stepwise Thermal Prestressing Method Using Cover-Plate

In this study, static loading tests and numerical analyses of the composite beam strengthened by multi-stepwise thermal prestressing method were carried out to evaluate the prestressing effect of the thermal prestressing prestress and the sectional effect of the installed cover-plate on the increase in the load-carrying capacity of composit beam. From this study, the strengthening method using multi-stepwise thermal prestressing method (TPSM) can be applied to reduce the deflection of the composite beam as well as to strengthening the composite beam by inducing the prestress in case of the occurrence in the large deflection by the insufficiency of the section properties of the composite beam. because of the expectation of the increase in the yield load and the sectional properties of the composite beam.
A Preliminary Study on the Reused Channel-Type Lining Board with Corrosion-Damage

Channel-type lining board(CLB) is a welded steel structure used in the field of open cut subway excavation and building basement construction. Lining board is generally installed at the underground environment which is exposed to corrosion factors such as humidity, temperature and corrosive gases. This study evaluates reusability of the corroded lining board by experimental and analytical method. Static loading tests were performed to know serviceability of corroded CLB after checking thickness loss of the used CLB parts. Strain of the plates and middle point deflection was measured simultaneously. According to experimental test results and comparison with numerical analysis, the thickness loss of the plates by corrosion makes more vertical displacements and stresses in members under the DB vehicle load considering impact factor. As a result, this paper is proposed a way to evaluate used and corroded CLB by checking the plates thickness and it makes construction engineers easy to know optimal time to replace their old CLBs with new one.
Verification of Lateral Live Load Distribution Factors for Continuous Steel Girder Bridges Based on Diagnostic Testing Results

The objective of this research is to verify the code-specified girder distribution factors (GDF) for continuous steel girder bridges by field testing. Previous analytical study revealed that current GDF's specified in AASHTO Standard and AASHTO LRFD, developed for the simple span bridges are conservative even for the continuous bridges. In this study, field tests were performed for three continuous steel girder bridges to validate the GDF's specified in the AASHTO codes. The results show that the code values are conservative when compared with field tests, and in some cases, too conservative. Also, strains measured from the field test are, in most cases, smaller than those expected from the analytical results. However, when the GDF's from measured strains are compared with GDF's from analysis, it is found that the analysis results are not conservative, and in some instance, the analytical results underestimate the actual GDF's, which can lead to a groundless notion of safety. In one case, test results showed that the code GDF's specified in AASHTO LRFD is too permissive. As a result, it is found that GDF's specified in AASHTO LRFD should be used with careful reservation.
