Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 12, issue 3, 1995, Pages 1~1
The Pusan Container Terminal faces a rapid increase in berthing time of container ships as well as in waiting time of external trucks, which is due to an absolute lack of yard space. This research is focused on the development of a decision support system for the planning of the container terminal yard assignment so that the yard space would be utilized most effectively. Efforts should be given to the reasonable assignment of the yard storage and the dynamic adaptation to the ever changing environment. The software introduced here is based on the know-how of the field exports and its framework takes the approach of the hierarchical decision making.
An Evaluation Structure and Criteria of Workflow Management Systems for Business Process Reengineering

Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 12, issue 3, 1995, Pages 17~17
The changing business environment requires that firms reengineer their fundamental processes in order to retain their competitive advantage. Most Business Proess Reengineering (BPR) projects, however, have failed partly because the essential enabler, ie. information technology, was unable to perpetuate the original vision. The information systems were unable to support the collaboration among the workers participating in the process. Workflow Management Systems (WfMS) have the potential to enhance not only individual performance as did traditional information systems, but also the group performance essential to the success of BPR by providing an effective means of communications through connectivity. It also enhances productivitiy through proceduralization of the fundamental processes, thus making it possible to empower the employee even while it controls the flow, and ultimately the delaly that originally made the BPR effort necessary. Therefore, though it is not a panacea, WfMS's can improve chances for the success of BPR projects. Managers who have realized this are faced with another obstacle - that of selecting the WfMS that best meets the particular organization's needs. This paper provids an evaluation structure of WfMS functions with emphasis on those functions that are essential for BPR, classifying the functions into an attribute hierarchy according to the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach. It also suggests specific evaluation criteria for the main workflow functions provided by most vendors today, thus providing managers with a comprehensive guideline to facilitate the decision process.
A Study on the Project Process Management System (PPMS) for the Effective Management of R&D Projects
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 12, issue 3, 1995, Pages 45~45
This study examines a normative model of project management systems, PPMS, to provide information for directing R&D activity in order to increase R&D productivity. The PPMS (Project Process Management System) is a disciplined and systematic framework to manage R&D projects effectively and efficiently under the assumption of a strategic decision making and long-range planning. The purpose of PPMS is to provide for the management of research organization at different levels an effective management tool first, for the planning system which deals with rational selection and authorization of R&D projects, second, for the control system which concerns monitoring and controlling the execution of R&D projects, and finally, for the evaluation system which attains evaluation of the performance results of R&D projects and determination of the necessary follow-up. A view for the future development of project management within the context of a project-performing organization is also elaborated to exhibit the progress and phase description of the project management system.
Systems Engineering Approach for Midrange Computer System Development

Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 12, issue 3, 1995, Pages 61~61
Developing a midrange computer system in a country like Korea is a difficult task. It is because of the lack of computer related technologies, appropriate manpower and the sufficient domestic market. Thus, only a few country except the United States has succeeded in developing her own model of computer systems. Fortunately, Korea became one of them. In this paper, we will present some special features of TICOM and how we successfully developed our own model of a midrange computer system with respect to system engineering point of view. The Difficulties and suggestions from the experience of the development of TICOM will also be described.

Designing and Building an Efficient Small-Sized LAN
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 12, issue 3, 1995, Pages 97~97
Information sharing and automated office in the use of PC necessitate corporate network to implement business innovation. Building an efficient network requires competent knowledge on capabilities of various LAN technologies, hardwares and softwares that have rapidly improved in terms of efficiency and cost. This paper compares capabilities of network components: communication protocol, hardware, network operation system, low cost database software and mid-range priced SQL for application development. Also this study presents a new technology on virtual LAN and a selection guide among the various options of the network components which are suitable for PC-based small-sized network in balance of efficiency with economy. In the last section of this paper, a case of small-sized network is given for illustration.
On Knowledge-based Modeler for Network Analysis
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 12, issue 3, 1995, Pages 135~135
This paper is concerned with a conceptual design of a knowledge-based modeler for network analysis. The "knowledge-based modeler" approach is suggested as a method for incorporating the user's qualitative knowledge and subjective decison in the course of the mathematical modeling and the subsequent solution procedure. The submodules of the proposed modeler such as database, model/algorithm base and functional knowledge bases are identified and the flows of information between the submodules are sequentially defined. A prototype system is implemented for experimental purpose by using the application software GURU.
Demand Aanalysis for the Domestic Satellite Broadcasting Service Using the Competitive Diffusion Model
Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 12, issue 3, 1995, Pages 163~163
The future demand of the satellite broadcasting service is analyzed through the competitive diffusion model. Diffusion rates of the satellite broadcasting service in the case that the decreasing effect due to the cable TV service is considered are smaller than those in the independent case. Diffusion rates of the satellite broadcasting service are shown to become different according to environmental conditions.
Tabu Search methods to minimize the number of tardy jobs in nonidentical parallel machine scheduling problem

Journal of the Korean Operations Research and Management Science Society, volume 12, issue 3, 1995, Pages 177~177
This paper presents a Tabu Search method to minimize a number of tardy jobs in the nonidentical parallel machine scheduling. The Tabu Search method employs a restricted neighborhood for the reduction of computation time. In this paper, we use two different types of method for a single machine scheduling. One is Moore's algorithm and the other is insertion method. We discuss computational experiments on more than 1000 test problems.
