Decision Maker's Personality Type and Risk Attitude

The personality types developed by Gustav Jung are frequently used to identify peopl's decision-making style, especially to determine which functions are dominant ones in the perception and the processing of information. In this paper, the Jungian typology is utilized to investigate if there are any systematic relations between an individual's personality type and her/his attitude toward risk. For this purpose, an experiment was conducted where 99 subjects, mostly students, participated in a computer-simulated horse racing game. Each subject's risk-seeking propensity was measured by the winning chance of the selected horse and the amount of stakes. The results of the experiment show that a decision-maker who is extrovert (E) is attitude and intutive(N) in perception of information is more likely to be risk prone than the introvert(I) and sensing(S) type. Feeling(F) function in information processing seems to induce more risk seeking attitude than thinking (T) function, but the statistical significance could not be found from the data, for this statement.
An Optimal Operating Policy for Two-stage Flow Lines with Machine Failures

Automatic transfer defined as an integrated system with a number of workstations, interstation storage buffers, automatic device and a control system, play a major role in ass production systems. Due to high capital investment needed for an automatic transferline, greater care should be taken in its design so as to maximize the system performance. One may to control the system performance is to control buffer storage. To control the interstation work-in-process inventory, we propose dual limit switches which control the buffer storage with two parameters, R and r. Under the policy, proceding station is forced down when the inventory level in the buffer reaches R until the level falls to r. For the model developed, we analyze the system characteristics and find the optimal control parameters with a serach procedure.
A Geometrical Expansion Technique for Tolerance Approach to Sensitivity Analysis in Linear Programming

The tolerance approach to the sensitivity analysis in linear programming considers simultaneous and independent variations in the coefficients of the objective function or of the right-hand side terms and gives a region in which the coefficients and terms can be changed and still keeps the current optimal basis B for the original problem as an optimal basis for the perturbed problem. In this paper we describe a procedure that expands the region S obtained by the tolerance approach into a larger region R, so that more variations in the objective function coefficients or the right-hand side terms are permissible.
M/M/s/s + c Queueing System Revisited

The generalized Erlang loss function, extensively studied in the literature, is revisited. We study the steady state loss probability in M/M/s/s + c queueing system and prove that it satisfies the first and second order properties in integral number of servers as well as integral queue capacities. Also we study the problem of allocating integral number of servers and queue capacities, and develop an algorithm to obtian an optimal allocation of them individually and jointly with the small number of computations.
Branch and Bound Algorithm for the Facility Layout Problem Without Shape Distortion

Given the flow matrix, plant size (rectangle shape) and department sizes, the algorithm in this paper provides the plant layout with rectilinear distance measure. To construct automated facility design, eigenvector approach is employed. A branch and bound computer code developed by Tillinghast is modified to find the feasible fits of departments without shape distortion (see )in the plant rectangle. The computational results compared with CRAFT are shown.
Use of Managerical Decision Categories for Selecting KA/KR Techniques in HRM Problem Domains

Selection of appropriate knowledge acquisition and representation techniques is regarded as a major task in the development of expert systems. This depends on the characteristics of problem domains. Expert system builders have often adopted a technique without a formal analysis of application domains. The purpose of this paper is to provide the best knowledge aquisition and representation technique for use in human resource management problem domains. In an attempt to meet this purpose, the conceptual contingency model that suggests the best technique according to managerial decision categories is used as a guidance. In order to determine the priority of managerial decision categories, the Analytic Hierarchy Process and an extended method are proposed.
A Transportation and Production Model with Depot System

In automobile industry, the depot (distribution center) system is utilized to adjust the inventory and to supply the demands to the firm timely. In case of the small lot demands of short delivery cycle and the long distance from the parts manufacturing to the firm, the depot system is very important. In this paper, a model to minimize the sum of costs of holding, inventory and transportation, is proposed to determine the optimal quantities of production and transportation in JTT system. Finally, computational results that verify the effectiveness of the proposed model are demonstrated.
A Heuristic Algorithm for FMS Scheduling Using the Petri Net

The main purpose of this study is to develop an algorithm to solve the scheduling problems of FMS using Petri-net is well suited to model the dynamics of FMS and Petri-net is an ideal tool to formulate scheduling problems with routing flexibility and shared resources. By using the marking of Petri-net, We can model features of discrete even system, such as concurrency, asynchronous, conflict and non-determinism. The proposed algorithm in this paper can handle back-tracking using the marking of Petri-net. The results of the experiment show that marking is one of the best ways that describe exactly movement of the discrete event system. To show the effectiveness of the algorithm suggested here, we compare it with L1 algorithm using the Petri-net through the test on randomly generated test problems.
Acceleration of Simulated Annealing and Its Application for Virtual Path Management in ATM Networks

Simulated annealing (SA) is a very promising general purpose algorithm which can be conveniently utilized for various complicated combinatorial optimization problems. But its slowness has been pointed as a major drawback. In this paper, we propose an accelerated SA and test its performance experimentally by applying it for two standard combinatorial optimization problems (TSP(Travelling Salesman Problem) and GPP(Graph Partitioning Problem) of various sizes. It turns out that performance of the proposed method is consistently better both in convergenge speed and the quality of solution than the conventional SA or SE (Stochastic Evolution). In the second part of the paper we apply the accelerated SA to solve the virtual path management problem encountered in ATM netowrks. The problem is modeled as a combinatorial optimization problem to optimize the utilizy of links and an efficient SA implementation scheme is proposed. Two application examples are given to demonstrate the validity of the proposed algorithm.

The purpose of this paper is to critically review and compare the evaluation methods of fault tolerant MIN system and to suggest future study direction. The reliability analysis of MIN system is discussed. The system performance modeling under the faulty components is another main focus of this study.
Coordinating Production Order and Scheduling Policy under Capacity Imbalance

This paper comes from an observation that overemphasis on capacity utilization meausre, which is usual under capacity shortage, can seriously hurt the firm's profit and potential process improvement. We suggest a model that can be used in designing a coordination scheme for decentralized marketing and manufacturing activities. Using a price and time-sensitive demand and capacitated lotsizing model, we derive an effective communication medium betwen marketing and manufacturing. This Balance Indicator of process capacity and flexibility also implies that the increase in capacity availability and setup time reduction should be balanced by its market requirements. This is particularly important when a firm tries to improve its process capability by kaizen. Further, the model can be used to show the comparative performances of scheduling policies under capacity imbalnce. We show the shortening the scheduling cycle can improve the firm profit without changing the simple scheduling rule.
A Distributed Dynamic Channel Assignment Algorithm in Highway Microcells

A distributed dynamic channel assignment is proposed and its performance is examined in a highway microcellular radio environment. In the two step ordered local packing (TOLP) scheme, channels are assigned on an ordered basis under cochannel utilization in congested microcell region. A selection criterion is employed to decide the cell from which a free channel is borrowed. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms existing methods is channel utilization and call blocking probabilities, especially under asymmetric call arrivals with a lower call switching requirement.
Queueing Models for Mission Effectiveness and its Numerical Evaluation

A system is considered which is required to perform tasks that arrive randomly during a fixed mission duration. We develop queueing models to obtain the mission effectiveness and the blocking probabilities. Exact probabilities are computed by using the Finite Fourier Cosine Transform.
