Application of Intelligent Technique for the Efficient Operation of the Flexible Manufacturing System

This research involves the development and evaluation of a work flow control model for a type of flexible manufacturing system(FMS) called a flexible flow line(FFL). The control model can be considered as a kind of hybrid intelligent model in that it utilizes both computer simulation and neural network technique. Training data sets were obtained using computer simulation of typical FFL states. And these data sets were used to train the neural network model. The model can easily incorporate particular aspects of a specific FFL such as limited buffer capacity and dispatching rules used. It also dynamically adapts to system uncertainty caused by such factors as machine breakdowns. Performance of the control model is shown to be superior to the random releasing method and the Minimal Part Set(MPS) heuristic in terms of machine utilization and work-in-process inventory level.
A Study on the Control and Operation of Autonomous Distributed Machining System

The manufacturing systems have to cope with the circumstance that the requirements of customers are changed abruptly and the life cycle of product becomes short. In this paper, to develop the efficient control and operation of autonomous, distributed machining systems the concept of Holonic Manufacturing System is adopted and methods for the control and operation of the system are proposed including an evaluation function for the negotiation between holons. And it is applied to scheduling and selection of operations to be worked with consideration of quality. It is expected that the proposed methods may be applied to operate autonomous, distributed machining systems.
An Approximate Analysis of the Queueing Systems with Two Deterministic Heterogeneous Servers

A new approximation method for finding the steady-state probabilities of the number of customers present in queueing systems with Poisson arrivals and two servers with different deterministic service times with infinite waiting room capacity is developed. The major assumption made for the approximation is that the residual service times of the servers have mutually independent uniform distributions with densities equal to the reciprocals of the respective service times. The method reflects the heterogeneity of the servers only through the ratio of their service times, irrespective of the actual magnitudes and difference. The transition probability matrix is established and the steady-state probabilities are found for a variety of traffic intensities and ratios of the two service times; also the mean number of customers present in the system and in the queue, and server utilizations are found and tabulated. The method was validated by simulation and turned out to be very sharp.
A Mechanism to Derive Optimal Contractor-type & Action Comginations of a Single-source Procurement Contract

In sole-source procurement contraction for government goods and services, the buyer (government) needs to derive the optimal actions from the contractor so the buyer can obtain the maximum utility and the contractor, or single-source supplier, is guaranteed the equivalent of a minimum level of profit. Under the assumption of risk-neutrality for both the buyer and the contractor and the buyer's unobservability of the contractor's action, it is necessary for the buyer to design a (mathematical) model to achieve the above objective. This paper considers the mathematical formulation in which two problems - moral hazard and adverse selection - are present simultaneously; furthermore, from the formulation, a GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System) program is used for a possible buyer to obtain the optimal actions.
A Nonparametric Test on Mean Difference of DEA Efficiency Estimates - Bootstrapping Approach-

This paper presents a nonparametric method to test if the mean difference of DEA efficiency estimates between two groups statistically exists. A proposed method employs a bootstrapping approach to generation BCC efficiency estimates through Monte Carlo simulation resampling process. For the purpose of demonstration, we empirically apply the proposed method to the korean bank industry and compare its result with the result by the traditional deterministic DEA method. The nonparametric statistical hypothesis testing procedure in this study, which considers not only stochastic variability of the DEA data, but also random radial deviations off the efficient frontier, serves as a useful tool for dbjectively evaluating whether the mean difference of DEA efficiency estimates between groups is statistically significant.
A Study on the Optimal Signal Timing for Area Traffic Control

A genetic algorithm to determine the optimal signal sequence and double cycle pattern is described. The signal sequence and double cycle pattern are used as the input for TRANSYT to find optimal signal timing at each junction in the area traffic networks, In the genetic process, the partially matched crossover and simple crossover operators are used for evolution of signal sequence and double cycle pattern respectively. A special conversion algorithm is devised to convert the signal sequence into the link-stage assignment for TRANSYT. Results from tests using data from an area traffic network in Leicester region R are given.
A Study on Optimal Link Dimensioning of ATM Networks

ATM network design procedure is different from the current circuit or packet networks design procedure because of the variety of the offered services and the variability of requested bandwidth for each connection of ATM network. A number of optimization models for the link dimensioning of ATM network design have been proposed in the literature. However, most of the literature did not consider the modularity of resources allocated to a transmission path and the non-bifurcation of a VP link over the more than one TP, which are standardized in recent ITU-T Recommendations. In thIs paper, we propose a mathematical model for link dimensioning of ATM networks, based on the network synthesis method and a generalized bin-packing problem. The suggested model satisfies the constraints mentioned in the ITU-T Recommendations. We also propose efficient and practical algorithms for the suggested model. Computational experiment shows that the suggested algorithm gives efficient solutions even for moderate and large-sized networks within reasonable time.
Medium Access Control Protocol for Interconnection Network of Mobile System

The CDMA mobile system consists of several subsystems and each subsystem has many processing elements that handle voice messages and control messages for performing CDMA call processing functions through CDMA Interconnection Network(CIN). For assuring a high throughput and a short delay in the CIN, an efficient medium access control protocol should be provided. In this paper, we propose a new access control protocol of CIN for providing real time communications in CDMA mobile system. Also, we evaluate the delay performance of the proposed access control protocol and compare it with that of the existing access control protocol. Through a set of numerical examples, we show that our proposed protocol provides a better delay performance than the existing protocol.
Average Shadow Price in Integer Programming and its Stability Analysis

The average shadow price is a substitute for the traditional marginal shadow price. It can serve as a standard for decision making problems about the economic resources where the marginal analysis gives no useful information. This paper treats the average shadow price in pure integer programming and shows some stability properties of it. This implies that the values of the average shadow prices once computed are reliable within some extent of the data perturbations of the integer programming model.
A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for the Multiobjective Vehicle Scheduling Problems with Service Due Times

In this paper, I propose a hybrid genetic algorithm(HGAM) incorporating a greedy interchange local optimization procedure for the multiobjective vehicle scheduling problems with service due times where three conflicting objectives of the minimization of total vehicle travel time, total weighted tardiness, and fleet size are explicitly treated. The vehicle is allowed to visit a node exceeding its due time with a penalty, but within the latest allowable time. The HGAM applies a mixed farming and migration strategy in the evolution process. The strategy splits the population into sub-populations, all of them evolving independently, and applys a local optimization procedure periodically to some best entities in sub-populations which are then substituted by the newly improved solutions. A solution of the HCAM is represented by a diploid structure. The HGAM uses a molified PMX operator for crossover and new types of mutation operator. The performance of the HGAM is extensively evaluated using the Solomons test problems. The results show that the HGAM attains better solutions than the BC-saving algorithm, but with a much longer computation time.
An Study on the Customer' Service Perception and Roles of Quality Factors

Service quality is very important to marketers and consumers in that it has many strategic benefits in contributing to profitability of marketing activities and consumers' problem-solving activities. Moreover, despite the phenomenal growth of physical fitness centers little research has focused on the evaluation of service quality from exercisers' perspectives. The major purpose of this article is to explore the concept of two-factor model and its influences on exerciser's perception of quality. This article attempts to achieve its purpose by (1)classfying critical service attibutes into hygiene factors and satisfiers (2) measuring the relative importance of need criteria (3) evaluating SERVPERF model and SERVQUAL model in service sector and (4)identifying the relationship between overall satisfaction and behavior. In explaining the relationship between perceived performance and overall satisfaction only 27 out of original 33 survey items were appreared to be statistically significant. Hence a penalty-reward analysis was performed on these critical attributes to find out 11 satisfiers and 9 hygiene factors. In addition, it was found that only experience-based norms(SERVPERF model) were more appropriate than expectations to serve as a benchmark against which service experiences were compared(SERVQUAL model). However it must be noted that the degree of association to overall satisfaction was not consistent.
